Here’s my take:

The 70′s were due to a misunderstanding the Phillips curve, and Paul Volcker’s embrace of the Friedman solution Fed Chairman (1979-1987.)

Essentially, Friedman realized that that the Phillips curve was only inelastic in the short term so this meant that employment and inflation were linked as a trade off only in the short term. In the long-term the Phillips curve was perfectly elastic. This was the profound misunderstanding of the Federal Reserve during the 70′s. Everything they did made the problem worse and worse and worse.

Doesn’t matter who was in charge as long as you had poor monetary policy it was to be disaster. Carter had the choice off continuing down the path of destruction for the U.S. or bite the bullet and appoint Volcker as he did in 1979.

Reagan bit the bullet too and reappointed Volcker.

The federal funds rate, which had averaged 11.2% in 1979, was raised by Volcker to a peak of 20% in June 1981. The prime rate rose to 21.5% in ’81 as well

It worked out in the long-term although it made life for Reagan difficult in his early term.

Remember Ted Kennedy did not like Carter’s high interest rate solution (The Friedman plan) so he ran against Carter all the way to the convention promising low interest rates among other things.

Educate me. What has Obama proposed for national service that’s so pernicious compared with the national service requirements of other non-totalitarian capitalist nations. Switzerland is not socialist. Neither is Finland.

Ogabe made a speech during the campaign in which he called for “a Civilian Homeland Security Force every bit as large, every bit as powerful and every bit as well-funded as our military”.

Why do some of us always want to compare us to other countries? I think we’re great because we are DIFFERENT. Our ways are not their ways, which in my humble opinion is why our country is the greatest, most prosperous on the planet. But then again, I’ve always wanted to be a leader and not a follower. I think if someone wants to be a part of a service organization, it should be out of a desire to help not because our government said it should be so. My 2 cents worth.

If we’ve ever had a communist ruling the U.S., it was definitely FDR and his national unity agenda.
