Flashback audio: Senator Obama talks about mandatory national service

posted at 9:21 pm on August 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

Another chestnut dug up by The One’s bete noire at Naked Emperor News, destined to be the inspiration for a new lederhosen segment on “Glenn Beck.” You might recall that this issue’s come up before in the context of Obama’s campaign: For a few days after the election, Rahm Emanuel’s stated fondness for mandatory national service was a hot topic on righty blogs, especially after the Obama transition website posted an entry on national service “requiring” 50-100 hours per year from students. After the outcry from the ‘sphere, the “requirement” language was quietly replaced by more ambiguous language about “setting a goal” of 50-100 hours. I skimmed the transcript of Obama’s answers at last year’s presidential campaign forum on service and can’t find him endorsing anything like a mandatory obligation, and I find it exceedingly hard to believe that he’d have the votes for something like this in Congress when he can’t even get his health-care plan passed. But then, I’d never have guessed he’d nationalize General Motors either. Color me very skeptical that this is something to worry about — but less skeptical than I used to be.

You’ll never get support for a national service act when you govern as a bitter partisan. Everyone will naturally conclude that you’re looking to recruit people to your political causes paid for by the taxpayers.

This will become a Government Taxpayer Bailout of student loans on a grand scale which will serve a dual purpose of indoctrinating an endless supply of community organizer larvae. Simply put, they will bleed the responsible to breed the dependent.

Uh, we do have a strong civilian national security force for domestic counterterrorism operations; it’s called the Department of Homeland Security, and it works alongside the Department of Justice, 2 of the most well-known components of which are the FBI and the USMS. An old woman called in to the Mark Levin Show several months ago, because she had experience with such a civilian national security force, back in the country she came from. She was terrified and in tears at the thought of Obama instituting this newest component of his ever-expanding goon squad. She was Russian. The so-called civilian national security force was called the Soviet Committee for State Security: the KGB.

I respectfully disagree. The troops and weapons that were killing us on the ground in Vietnam were coming though Cambodia.

Would that George Bush had done as much as Nixon to interdict weapons coming into Iraq from Syria and Iran.

All very easy to argue about “borders” when the enemy doesn’t recoginize them.

Another thing entirely to lose your life to weapons that could have been stopped before they got to you.

The newly released Nixon tapes

“They’re not only not imaginative but they are just running these things ? bombing jungles,” Nixon said. “They have got to go in there and I mean really go in.”

Mr. Kissinger then cautioned: “The Air Force is designed to fight an air battle against the Soviet Union. They are not designed for this war.”

But the president persisted, suggesting that the bombing campaign could be disguised as an airlift of supplies.

“I want them to hit everything,” he said. “I want them to use the big planes, the small planes, everything they can that will help out there, and let’s start giving them a little shock.”

He ended by saying, “Right now there is a chance to win this goddamn war, and that’s probably what we are going to have to do because we are not going to do anything at the conference table.”

Mr. Kissinger immediately relayed the order: “A massive bombing campaign in Cambodia. Anything that flies on anything that moves.”

We won that f**king war.

Until Nixon was impeached and Congress abandoned the South.

I remember watchin bulldozers push thousands of VC bodies into trenches after Tet. We knew we’d won. But between Walter Cronkite and all the other Lefties, what we bled for was turned into a defeat.

Nevertheless, we got the North Vietnamese to sign a truce.

But Congress betrayed our allies.

And millions died.

Including your Cambodians.

My calculation: 100,000,000 Pakistani lives < less than one American soldier.

In 1976, the FBI’s Chicago Field Office prepared a summary which described the activities of the Weather Underground Organization, also known as Weathermen. This organization described itself as a revolutionary organization of communist men and women. The FBI’s analysis of its motivations, beliefs, and international travels are outlined in this summary.

Ayers became involved in the New Left and the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS).[9] He rose to national prominence as an SDS leader in 1968 and 1969. As head of an SDS regional group, the “Jesse James Gang”, Ayers made decisive contributions to the Weatherman orientation toward militancy.[7] The group Ayers headed in Detroit, Michigan became one of the earliest gatherings of what became the Weatherman. Before the June 1969 SDS convention, Ayers became a prominent leader of the group, which arose as a result of a schism in SDS.[7] “During that time his infatuation with street fighting grew and he developed a language of confrontational militancy that became more and more pronounced over the year [1969]“, disaffected former Weatherman member Cathy Wilkerson wrote in 2001. Ayers had previously become a roommate of Terry Robbins, a fellow militant, Wilkerson wrote. Robbins would later be killed while making a bomb.[10] In June 1969, the Weatherman took control of the SDS at its national convention, where Ayers was elected Education Secretary.[7] Later in 1969, Ayers participated in planting a bomb at a statue dedicated to riot police casualties in the 1886 Haymarket Riot confrontation between labor supporters and the police.[11] The blast broke almost 100 windows and blew pieces of the statue onto the nearby Kennedy Expressway.[12] (The statue was rebuilt and unveiled on May 4, 1970, and blown up again by other Weathermen on October 6, 1970.[12][13] Rebuilding it yet again, the city posted a 24-hour police guard to prevent another blast, and in January 1972 it was moved to Chicago police headquarters.[14] Ayers participated in the Days of Rage riot in Chicago in October 1969, and in December was at the “War Council” meeting in Flint, Michigan. Larry Grathwohl, an FBI informant in the Weatherman group from the fall of 1969 to the spring of 1970, stated that “Ayers, along with Bernardine Dohrn, probably had the most authority within the Weatherman”.[15]

I will ask it differently….you are okay with political violence that kills people yes?

2. Reagan had nothing to do with the Khmer Rouge. They were out of power by 1981.

3. The Vietnamese invaded Cambodia because they wanted to supplant the Chinese influence. It almost caused a war between Vietnam and China.

Come talk to me about Vietnam face-to-face sometime, you scum.

It’s not cool if you murder some Vietnamese or the government either nor kill random policeman.

Spathi on August 13, 2009 at 11:01 PM

Then I guess The Weather Underground isn’t cool now, too bad for you…

Ozprey on August 13, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Ozprey,

Jimmy Carter pardoned everyone who refused the conscription didn’t he? (????)

If he had served time, well he would have had to live with the consequences. In that case, Canada would have been the better option apparently.

Spathi on August 13, 2009 at 11:04 PM

I heard a rumor that O is going to announce a mandatory (?) service for 14 to 18 yr olds this September 11th (the announcement that is). Strange – does the President have that kind of power? I didn’t learn that in Poli Sci class…..

However, it is just a rumor and we’ll see if it’s true on 9/11/09

skree on August 13, 2009 at 11:05 PM

BHO didn’t say that. That video that you’re listening to that SOUNDS LIKE him is just an “outrage”. These types of videos of him making these staments are “outlandish” and “not deserving of attention”.

Wait. He’s cleared it up.

“As I’ve said many times, I never said that many times.”

He didn’t serve time because of a technicality (which I said above). In prison or out, Ayers is proud of what he did. Which makes him a souless douche. You have already stated you don’t know much about him, yet you dote like a little girl staring at a pony she loves.

No, he doesn’t.

Congress would have to pass legislation.

And something tells me they’re not feeling very secure about that sort of thing at the moment.

A bill like that is the only thing that would eat into Ogabe’s base. They sure as hell don’t want to do a day’s work.

guntotinglibertarian on August 13, 2009 at 11:10 PM

Spathi if ayers had his way he wouldve made 9/11 look like a an easter egg hunt.He wanted to kill millions,is on record as saying that, and has never denounced it.As far as vietnam,i believe he was just a pussy afraid to face people who would fight back,so like most libtards, decided to attack those who wouldnt(or didnt know an attack was coming).Im soooo pleased our wonderful president has close associates like this.

1) Actually their leaders were trained in France, and our bombings did lead to their rise in power.

2) Reagan did want support them.

3) The Vietnamese communists invaded invaded Cambodia, capturing Phnom Pen, in 1979.

Read up on Iron Felix and the Cheka….

Felix Dzerzhinsky

you know those cute little leftoids in the Che shirts?

they think guys like this are noble….

sven10077 on August 13, 2009 at 10:24 PM

On my LiveJournal, I used to have an icon with a picture of Che next to Reagan. It said: “Leftist Hero, Real Hero. YOU DO THE MATH.” Quite a few people liked it. Che is seen as a ‘peoples’ hero’, because he’s immorally and incorrectly portrayed as some sort of anti-oppression revolutionary. For most leftists, this twisted, intentionally twisted false history is good enough for them. Anyone that stands in the way of their ‘if it feels good, do it’ politicking is a direct representative of the forces of oppression, and the lie of Che fills the bill for a ‘hero’. He’s a ‘revolutionary’ on par with such personalities as Paul Revere, for taking up arms against ‘oppression and evil’, and laying down his life for his country. Many leftists that wear his ugly face on their shirts wouldn’t even believe you, were you to tell them that Che was a psychopath and serial killer that got off on killing, and may well have been a racist and homophobe (http://www.democraticwarrior.com/forum/showthread.php?t=97212): the very same things that liberals claim they oppose (yet support with their every word, action and vote). The support we’re seeing for the formation of the American KGB is easily explained: the DNC has always been a representative of violence, oppression, slavery, rape and other forms of evil, dating back from their split with the Whig Party and the formation of their paramilitary wing, the KKK. DNC loyalists believe that the machinery of oppression are a good thing, because they believe that machine will be on their side. The oppressive, brutal government Che fought for, communism, is seen as a great good by the left, because they buy into the promises of socialist/communist egalitarianism and equality. Like the ones I know that do, they believe that ‘we can do it better’. In spite of the failures of those governments everywhere else in the world, the delusion persists that ‘we can do it right‘. They ascribe the ‘one man can make a difference’ addage to Che. Nevermind the fact that what ‘change’ he’s responsible for is the institutionalization of murder and oppression all in the name of personal power.

You’ve avoided every point I’ve tossed your way by changing the subject and acting like a class A troll. I’m tired of you now….moving on….

Ozprey on August 13, 2009 at 11:15 PM

Spathi, you are a moron. Well, maybe you just studied to be a moron, and flunked the test. You must be a child who has no first hand knowledge of what went on during the Viet Nam war. You get your biased history from the left wing meat heads who think they are smart because they have Phd’s. Getting a PhD in any non-core science field only requires persistence, not intelligence. Pay attention to people who were there and you might learn something useful to replace the mush in your head.

Bull. I’ve seen that propaganda before. Propagated by disgruntled Leftist ex-CIA officer.

Khmer Rouge were Maoist, you ignorant slut.

theTarCzar on August 13, 2009 at 11:17 PM

Ogabe’s Presidency is kapoot. He’s almost got a revolution on his hands now – he pushes any more – he’ll have one.

But I’ll tell you – this isn’t a guy who will go golfing for four years. He’ll make some kind of move – mark my words.

He’s in the Kobiashi Maru right now. You can’t win that simulation – Kirk beat it by cheating … because Kirk didn’t like to lose.

Ogabe … contrary to popular belief – is NOT Spock – he’s Kirk.

He’ll cheat.

Watch and see!

Glen Beck will have so much material – he’ll have to start taking nitroglycerin for his heart.

Ozprey on August 13, 2009 at 11:20 PM

For 35 years Ive heard this crap about how our bombing led to the rise of the Khmer Rouge.

That doesn’t even make sense. So the Khmer, pissed off about American bombing rose up spontaneously and….slaughtered their own people?

This was a lie originated by Sidney Shamberg and Bruce Palling, two communist journalists who hated Nixon.

The academia, of course, loves that story.

Which is why Spathi learned it in his Gay History of Vietnam courses, in between lowering his panties for every minority student on campus.
