Flashback audio: Senator Obama talks about mandatory national service
posted at 9:21 pm on August 13, 2009 by Allahpundit
Another chestnut dug up by The One’s bete noire at Naked Emperor News, destined to be the inspiration for a new lederhosen segment on “Glenn Beck.” You might recall that this issue’s come up before in the context of Obama’s campaign: For a few days after the election, Rahm Emanuel’s stated fondness for mandatory national service was a hot topic on righty blogs, especially after the Obama transition website posted an entry on national service “requiring” 50-100 hours per year from students. After the outcry from the ‘sphere, the “requirement” language was quietly replaced by more ambiguous language about “setting a goal” of 50-100 hours. I skimmed the transcript of Obama’s answers at last year’s presidential campaign forum on service and can’t find him endorsing anything like a mandatory obligation, and I find it exceedingly hard to believe that he’d have the votes for something like this in Congress when he can’t even get his health-care plan passed. But then, I’d never have guessed he’d nationalize General Motors either. Color me very skeptical that this is something to worry about — but less skeptical than I used to be.

And when I brought this issue up to my friends after hearing him say it then, they shrugged and saw no issue there. Well, with what we know now, I’d say it’s a pretty big issue, if you can wrap your brain around it…

Their duty right now would probably be to stand side by side the SEIU thugs and help put an end to the un-american HC protests going on.

It might have once been in the master plan, but that’s gone for good now; the resistance to national service would make the current town hall protests look like Cribbage night at the old folks home in comparison.

14 voted for McCain, 15 for Obama. First question: who is happy with Obama? Only 4 people raised their hands.
Then they flipped out about flag@whitehouse.org.
The Obama supporters are angered that Obama is much weaker than Bush, who actually got his agenda through.
John the Libertarian on August 13, 2009 at 9:30 PM
I hate listening to Barry speak but what scares me the most is when Michelle speaks in public. She sounds identical to Rev. Wright.
As far as mandatory service for youth, if a young man or woman choses to serve their county or community they should do so. If it is mandatory it is wrong. When someone wants to do something that they believe in they take pride in it and enjoy it. When they are forced to do it the only thing that comes of it is resentment and rebelion. Those of you with teenagers know what I am talking about.

I believe the plan is to crash the economy and job market, thrusting many young folks into “corps” first. The “mandatory” language was dropped from the House Bill 1388 Serve America Act so that they could push it through the senate. Expect mandatory service to be “added” somewhere down the line by other means.
