Who’s poor in America, according to ObamaCare?

posted at 5:55 pm on August 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama seems very confused about the poor in America.  At one point in his campaign, he set the income bar for the rich as low as $75,000, promising a middle-class tax cut to those who made less than that figure.  Now, the Wall Street Journal reports that Obama’s health-care reform plan proposes to subsidize medical-coverage expenses for families of four making as much as $88,000.

So are they rich or poor?  It depends on how one defines … political expediency:

Most versions of the proposed overhaul floating around Capitol Hill, including the one endorsed by Mr. Obama, define “low-income” people who would be eligible for government subsidies to buy health insurance as including those with incomes almost twice the median household income.

Under the proposal, slightly more than one in five of the nation’s households -– through the redistribution of income in taxes they pay –- could be subsidizing the health insurance of the other four in five families, even though many of those who would receive government largess have incomes well above the national average.

The government, under Mr. Obama’s overhaul, would help buy health insurance for families of four that earn up to $88,000 a year.

To put this in perspective, the median household income in the U.S. — the point at which half the households make more and half earn less -– is roughly $50,000.

Obama proposes to subsidize more than half of all families in the US.  Who will end up paying for these subsidies?  Obviously, Obama wants to argue that only the wealthiest earners in the US will pay the bill, but they don’t make enough money to do so — even if the government confiscated all of their earnings.

The ratio itself shows the ludicrous construct of ObamaCare subsidies.  If ObamaCare actually controlled costs better than the present system, why would the government have to subsidize families that by any measure are earning a significant income, a level  more than 60% greater than the median?  And who will argue that families earning $88,000 cannot afford to find health insurance without a federal subsidy?

The real reason for that figure is simple.  Peter Brown notes that 80% of the population would qualify for subsidies at that income level cutoff.  It’s a vote-buying scheme, a way to mollify political rage by giving 80% of people the sense that they’ll get something for nothing.  By the time the bill actually comes due, it will be far too late for the anger and opposition to effectively stop ObamaCare.

If $88k is the threshold (for households)…isn’t $46k the mean income for all American households?

So, millions of American households who can indeed afford health insurance coverage from a private insurer are now going to be subsidized? And all the rest of us real taxpayers…not tax filers seeking refunds…have to foot the bill?

Guess when it comes to taking care of your family these days, that new 72″ screen and $55k SUV are a lot more important than something stupid like buying health insurance.

I don’t think people will buy this. After all, Obama has been buying votes since he got in his office and it is already starting to get old. People making $88,000 a year do not need subsidies now to get insurance, they somehow manage to buy it…so what is so wrong with Obama’s system that the government needs to pump that kind of money into it.

They might give them a subsidy, but they will also raise taxes. Same difference.

CWforFreedom on August 12, 2009 at 6:19 PM

obama wants to fight a battle on a ground of dissolution, a stage of internecine warfare and civil strife. He has dragged us there by entitling this debate using one word–reform. The ensuing strife is half over the wording, and half over the type of reform.

We’d be wise to move the battle to trafficked ground, one where there is freedom of movement. We all agree to reform, we just need to redefine it to mean what we want it to–for there are many types of reform and we are certainly pro-reform. The left is using the word “reform” as a proxy for “single payer.” This is illogical and incorrect and the simple correction of it would buy us 50% of the people and a large swathe of ground.

What the strategists do not seem to understand is that this is not a political ploy, gamesmanship, some sort of mass movement organized from a war room in DC sort of thing.

People are indeed angry…pissed off…and they are no longer represented by their elected representatives. Righteous anger does not need a strategy. It simply is.

When the Speaker of the House tells people to shut up or they they are nazi-thugs, when a President tells America the time for talking is over…and nobody has fully read any version of Obamacare and all the appendices and charts and other data…yet Congress and the White House insist that we merely “trust them,” and spend or commit to several trillion dollars in the near years more trillions in the out years…and people are losing jobs still at an alarming rate…people have every Right (capital R) to get angry.

If Krauthammer does not understand this…then he is part of the problem…not even close to being part of the solution.

The confrontations have already started to end because the members of congress are not showing up/canceling their town mtgs and instead sending out emails asking for input. Case in point: Harry Mitchell – Democrat – Tempe AZ. I think Harry did hold a town mtg though so I’ll give him credit for that. Good man. Let’s chat about Arizona’s other congresswoman Ann Kilpatrick who I’ve just learned has decided not to visit with the ‘little people’.

Just prepare yourselves: This show of irritation by the people will be ignored, the law shall pass, you will be enrolled in gov’t care and thus your lives will change.

Hope.
Change.

I’m fighting against it but know that they’re going to do what they’re going to do not matter what we say. 2010 seems to be the next ‘fight’ but then you’ll have the media and the SEIU people protesting any cuts to government healthcare and the republicans will be made to look like boogymen cutting grandma’s health insurance. Its a done deal and we can moan all we want, show our spirit but just like porkulus – with all the faxes, phonecalls, emails to reject it – healthcare reform will pass.

I’m mentally prepared to “embrace the horror”, roll my eyes at the coming outrage of the grey panthers, who voted in the democrats who would like them to get on the ice flow and go away so the gov’t can save $$ on healthcare AND social security.

Thank God my mom and dad died in these last few years so I wouldn’t have to fret about them.

If there were supposed to be health insurance reform so that health insurance will be cheap and affordable, why does Barry need to look at subsidy to families, even for those making $88000/ a year? Can’t they afford to pay the $5 a month for health insurance, the Cuba-Barry way? Maybe Barry thinks that only those making $90,000 or more should pay the $5/month, and for the rest it should be free. Free Money all all. Thanks, Obama for looking out for us

The next project Barry will tackle will be putting all lawyers on salary under the employ of the government, and have free lawyers for all Americans.

Good set-up huh? Lets see unions protected making 25,000 and above and those at 88,000 how are they covered as well? How will the unions explain a hold on raise increases during bargaining time? Did they lock in deals thus their promised foot soldiers unknown to membership? To have been a fly on the wall. Come to think of it, AFSME took very little loss last time around. All union members as many of you realize are not for this Indentured Servitude Obama Penalty Plan.

I wonder how many large employers will want to maintain a massive medical benefits package for the sizeable % of their employees who fall into this category? Turn em loose to Uncle Sam and save massive amounts of cash!

I’m guessing union workers will be protected from such being dumped en masse.

If it’s Obama vs. the Birther/Deather/Obama is a Muslim Socialist/I Can See Alaska From My House-wing of the Republican Party, it will be another Obama landslide.

As bad as you think Obama is – you have NO viable alternative. NONE!

Since when did Tina Fey become a Republican?

Obama’s health-care reform plan proposes to subsidize medical-coverage expenses for families of four making as much as $88,000.

This is old news. Plus, everyone’s gonna be on OboobaCare eventually if it passes. This is sort of a looking glass non-story.

Which is the most anti-equality political philosophy imaginable, when you think about it.

MMR much?

Our President is a big time cynic when it comes to the nation he leads. People take this bribe at the expense of Liberty. Just push the handle and flush it.
