Video: “Zombieland” trailer
posted at 6:27 pm on August 12, 2009 by Allahpundit
A palate cleanser in honor of the Democrats’ talking point about an America beset by mindless mobs, with a bat-wielding Woody Harrelson in the SEIU role. As a zombie connoisseur, I’m excited yet apprehensive. Comedy/horror is hard to balance; “Scream” did it wonderfully but “Shaun of the Dead” leaned too hard towards the former, at least until the climax inside the pub. This one looks like it’ll make the mistake. Plus, as cathartic as it is to watch a little of the ol’ ultraviolence being perpetrated on zombies, the more cartoonish the kills, the less intense the feeling of menace is and the less frightened you feel. “Night of the Living Dead” is the canonical zombie movie not just because it launched the genre but because it was so low-budget that Romero was forced to shoot it in a sort of verite style — which ended up helping the picture by making a ridiculous, schlocky premise seem oddly realistic. This flick, by contrast, is being sold as an amusement park ride, which is fine and fun but not likely to provide the claustrophobia true zombie aficionados crave.
Plus, fast-moving zombies? Weak. Let’s show a little respect for tradition, please. You’ll find a couple of F-bombs waiting for you below so please observe this, your official content warning.

Agreed, AP. Fast zombies are uber lame. I’m much more a fan of the classic slow zombie. Max Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide is great…

My idea of a zombie movie would be Halflife 2. It has aliens too!

Jim Treacher on August 12, 2009 at 6:54 PM
Looks great. BTW, who gets scared by zombies? I haven’t seen a truly scary film since…. well…. ever. Is it something about being a beta the predisposes you to be scared of a movie?
Aquateen Hungerforce on August 12, 2009 at 6:54 PM
Well this ought to be fun to take my 16-year old son and his motley crew of friends to go see.
And I agree… fast moving zombies? Practically sacrilege.
SilverStar830 on August 12, 2009 at 6:55 PM
As to Zombies, I think “28 Days Later” just about won the best-of award, along with the mainstay, “Night of the Living Dead” that started it all (I actually think the remake of the latter is better than the first).
Third-up is “Dawn of the Dead.”
Nothing can touch those four (original and remake of the “Night of the Living Dead” as two and three).
Lourdes on August 12, 2009 at 6:57 PM
now this is a movie i can get behind!!!!
Ghoul aid on August 12, 2009 at 6:57 PM
And the “fast moving zombies” thing is owned by “28 Days Later.” Excellent film.
Lourdes on August 12, 2009 at 6:58 PM
If you like zombies as a genre, GO READ WORLD WAR Z NOW! It’s by Max Brooks, Mel Brooks’ son, and one of the best books I’ve read in the last few years. It just happens to be about zombies. A seriously great read.
As for this movie, my wife and I can’t wait. Love some zombie movies.
oddjob1138 on August 12, 2009 at 7:03 PM
Also, as Simon Pegg said, werewolves don’t fly, vampires die in the sun and zombies don’t run.
oddjob1138 on August 12, 2009 at 7:08 PM
That and the Zombie Survival Guide.
scrubbiedude on August 12, 2009 at 7:10 PM
Are you sure that the trailer wasn’t just the cBS Evening News with old what’s her name?
William Teach on August 12, 2009 at 7:11 PM
I’d forgotten how great that Van Halen song is too. One of their best and most underrated.
That movie looks like a pile of fun. I’ll wait for the DVD or PPV though!!
World War Z is a classic read, I have to agree. I can’t imagine how they will transfer it to film though. The book is so emormous in scope, yet oddly claustrophobic, it is surely bound to be a dissapointment, even though I hope not.
Dino64 on August 12, 2009 at 7:12 PM
As much as I liked 28 Days Later, the sequel was even better.
Jim Treacher on August 12, 2009 at 7:13 PM
*Feels the urge to go play me to Left4Dead now.
Mental Note: When the zombie apocalypse starts — get a shotgun.

If I don’t hear at least one zombie moan, “Braaaains!!”, it just isn’t really a zombie movie.
trubble on August 12, 2009 at 7:19 PM
Oh, speaking of zombie movies, I rather like the re-make *shock* of Dawn of the Dead. I know lots love to bash it because it wasn’t done by Romero but I thought it was well made.

I was a little disappointed by “[Rec]” the new Spanish zombie flick. Everyone online was hyping it as the scariest zombie movie ever but there’s really only one scary moment and the very end (which is very scary). “28 Days Later” is much better.
Btw, it’s not a zombie flick but “The Strangers” starring Liv Tyler is scary as hell. Also, “Eden Lake” and “Martyrs” are very good.
Go RBNY on August 12, 2009 at 7:36 PM
“The Strangers” was awesome. a bit too much realism at the end though.
Ghoul aid on August 12, 2009 at 7:39 PM
Fast zombies are for real men only. If you’re a sissy, sodomite or Democrat (but I repeat myself) stick to the slow moving ones your grandma could take out.
Darth Executor on August 12, 2009 at 7:40 PM
That game is one hell of a lot of fun……Love all the new maps they’re coming out with.
….but do vampires sparkle???
BigWyo on August 12, 2009 at 7:42 PM
OK, I’ve seen we all agree that “World War Z” is a great book. Has anyone read anymore good zombie/post-apocalyptic novels recently?
And DO NOT mention “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy. I was in a suicidal funk for weeks after that one.
(consider this thread officially hijacked)
Tomblvd on August 12, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Not true about vampyres. If they die in the sun, how come my wife is still alive? She sucked the life right out of our marriage and she’s still roaming the earth…….

Love the Howard Dean zombie in the beginning.
ALTernative781 on August 12, 2009 at 10:00 PM
For the last frickin time people:
There were no zombies in either 28 Days Later or 28 Weeks Later.
The people were not dead. They were infected with a plague, the “Rage Virus”, which turned them into uber-violent murderers, not flesh eating undead monsters.
If we are going to be “zombie connoisseurs”, let’s get the facts right, K?

For one of thje best Zombie flicks EVAH you need to watch/rent “FIDO”. “Pleansantville” meets “Night Of The Living Dead”.
A Canadian movie that has to be seen, not explained. You’ll laugh your head off.

Don’t know why Zombie movies are getting so much attention these last few years.
Maybe it’s because of that foreboding dread that the world’s going to end soon. Perhaps it’s the raw humanity (want to know what a person’s really like? Plop him in a batsh*t crazy situation like this for example).
Chaz706 on August 12, 2009 at 11:02 PM
Dude, are you seriously saying that “Scream” is a better movie than “Shaun of the Dead”? You gotta be kidding me!
OscarSchneegans on August 12, 2009 at 11:05 PM
Woody Harrelson sucks, I’m trying to be civil about it ;)
Humphrey007 on August 12, 2009 at 11:10 PM
Woody Harrelson, by taking this role, is only doing to get in some target practice to do a better job of playing his father in an upcoming movie about the mob in Texas.
john1schn on August 12, 2009 at 11:27 PM
Oh, and “Shaun of the Dead” kicked ass…
john1schn on August 12, 2009 at 11:28 PM
I’m a proud and unapologetic Shyamalan fan (and come on, the man’s name is not that hard to spell). But I completely agree that The Happening was not only by far the worst movie he’s ever made, but easily one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.
As for this, Woody Harrelson = failure.
Cylor on August 13, 2009 at 12:17 AM
28 days later wasn’t a zombie film, the people were still alive but infected with rage.
borg on August 13, 2009 at 2:14 AM
Stole my thunder…great movie! As was “Shaun of the Dead” (Scream was good, but Shaun is better)…And yes, I’m glad there were a few mentions that those in “28 Days Later” were NOT zombies!!

A list I wrote for a friend the other day, in no real order as they are all fantastic:

Plague of the Dead (The Morningstar Strain) – Z. A Recht
The Morningstar Strain: Thunder and Ashes Pt.2 – Z. A Recht
Autumn – David Moody
Autumn: The City – David Moody
Autumn: Purification – David Moody
Hater – David Moody

Dang, maybe this is why I had zombie Nazi dreams last night. A great genre for movies, not so appealing for nappy-time thoughts…

Maquis, I don’t want to lose touch, as you were the first person here to be kind to me. So, I will always be thankful for that. Even if we disagree about somethings. And no matter how wrong you are and stubbornly refuse to admit it. Of course.
Loxodonta on August 13, 2009 at 4:22 AM
Of course. Moi aussi.
Maquis on August 13, 2009 at 4:24 AM
Also add Without Warning – John Birmingham, to my list. Nearly finished reading it and it is mind expanding (In the What If…. kind of way) plus very enjoyable.
VeniVidiVidic on August 13, 2009 at 4:25 AM
Lox, jamais t’oublier.
Maquis on August 13, 2009 at 4:34 AM
Maquis:
Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing,
Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness;
So on the ocean of life we pass and speak one another,
Only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence.
— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
Tales of a Wayside Inn: 3: The Theologian’s Tale: 4: Elizabeth
Life is short and filled with many storms and silences. Each moment we take in passing to truly speak each other, these are among the greatest gifts in life.
So until we pass one another again, do take very good care of yourself, mon ami.
Loxodonta on August 13, 2009 at 4:54 AM
1. Zombies. Are. NOT. Fast. Period.
2. Zombies eat flesh, not brains. Decayed teeth cutting into flesh is somewhat believable, but decayed teeth cutting through scalp AND skull is not.
3. I know, I know: “ghouls” would actually be the correct term. But “Ghoulland” just doesn’t sound right.
crushliberalism on August 13, 2009 at 8:09 AM
Seriously? I thought Scream was crap, and enjoyed the heck out of Shaun.
q2600 on August 13, 2009 at 8:31 AM
While you are correct and they were not zombies at all, the movie was still a ‘zombie movie’ in every way except for that one detail. It belongs to that genre.

VeniVidiVidic on August 13, 2009 at 3:48 AM
It should be said that most of the books on your list are of the “pulp” fiction variety, they aren’t really, “novels” in the classic sense.
I read “Plague of the Dead” earlier this year. AS a simple pass the time book, it is entertaining, but it’s not a great book. WWZ on the other hand is well written and reads more like a novel than “pulp”.
A warning: if anyone comes across the zombie anthology “The Walking Dead” avoid it as you would, well, a zombie. One would think think writers of zombie stories would be able to steer clear of political correct pap and leftist ideology. With this collection, one would be wrong in that thought. Want a story advocating abortion in a world full of zombies? This book has it! It’s crap – don’t read it!
catmman on August 13, 2009 at 9:13 AM
oddjob1138 on August 13, 2009 at 9:06 AM
I’m picking fly poop out of pepper with you on this:
A zombie movie cannot be a zombie movie without zombies.
Days was a good movie, better than Weeks IMO, but it was not a zombie movie. I suppose I could grant it was “zombie-esque”, but not a true movie of the genre.
catmman on August 13, 2009 at 9:16 AM
When it comes to zombie directors I’m more of a Lucio Fulci fan myself (even more than Romero), but I’m willing to give this a try.
