Video: Sheila Jackson-Lee shows her respect for constituents
posted at 10:55 am on August 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) went back to her district in Houston to show her constituents her respect for their concerns, which she demonstrates at about the 4:30 mark of this video. When was the last time one of your employees interrupted a meeting with you to take a cell phone call, especially in the middle of a tough question? Listen to the reaction around the person taking the video:
“She’s not even listening. … Seriously? … I mean, come on.”
Keep watching for a couple of minutes afterward, because Jackson-Lee does worse when she’s paying attention. She claims that the public plan won’t impact the existence of private insurance, and then in the same breath claims it will compete against existing private plans to make them “better”. And while her constituent tells a difficult tale of cancer survival, the best Jackson-Lee can offer is that a public plan will allow people to lose weight without having to pay $19.99 to those programs we see on TV. Er, $19.99 is less than most co-pays; it’s certainly less than what one has to pay through Medicare without Medicare Advantage for a doctor visit.
And what exactly is wrong with Slim-Fast and other private sector nutrition programs? They’re accessible, they’re effective for at least some people, and by the way, insurance plans don’t cover them anyway. If that’s the best sales pitch ObamaCare and Jackson-Lee have, it’s going down in low-cal flames.

Everything’s good now, because we’ve made amends through Medicare.
Huh? What?
One of the most obvious things I’ve seen from the representatives coming back for these Town Hall meetings is how obviously incompetent they are when it comes to important issues they’re voting on. None of them can answer even the most basic questions.
And who’s going to be running your health care? These folks.
12thMonkey on August 12, 2009 at 11:40 AM
The Tuskeegee Syphilis issue wasn’t a deliberate infecting of black sharecroppers in Alabama. It was a failure to treat when a viable treatment was available–penicillin. It happened to come about during the course of the study. It was an ethically horrible issue and indefensible and remains one of the studies that has led to the ethical standards we have today.
The ethics issue remains. That issue is that there are many great research questions, that on their research merit alone are in need of answering. HOWEVER, simply because something is a great research question–ie, What is the natural course of syphilis?–doesn’t make it ethically worthy of study when in the context of greater society an appropriate treatment for syphilis had emerged.

WOW! This woman is completely out of touch with her voters and with reality. I thought she was scrapping the bottom with the Michael Jackson tribute and attempted congressional honor, but she is sinking to new lows. If this is the best her home state has to offer in politicians it might be a good idea to reduce the number of states in the USA to 49! Good grief, and we wonder why this country is going the way it is.
Godis2good on August 12, 2009 at 11:42 AM
What is interesting is that Jackson-Lee shows no remorse or embarrassment for taking that cell phone call. In cases where I have been in meetings: 1) I put my phone on vibrate and 2) I ignore the call until after the meeting is over.
Remember, we are the peons…they are our lords.
BTW, since I’m new here…how do you space out your paragraphs? Keying “Enter” doesn’t work.

I don’t want to sound like a defeatist (I’m not really I’m not),but Sheila , McCaskill, Spector, and Pelosi and their gang really don’t care about the American People. Liberals care about one thing staying in office…maybe after 2010 they can all get jobs as Postal workers and help out that failing Bureaucracy sure as shootin FedEx ain’t going to higher them.
Col.Smeag on August 12, 2009 at 11:47 AM
It’s ethically horrible, but it’s extremely bad when people are willing to assume the worst about their government. maybe she didn’t want to start arguing with him, but she should have said that she’s never heard of it. not just accept that the US government singled out Blacks in order to kill them off or something.

That’s correct. Nonetheless, denial of treatment was cruel.
Perhaps a widespread abuse of well intended medical experimentation is the massive series of vaccinations and treatments given to our military, using our troops to test pharmaceutical results.
Sheila’s response cajoling “that was then, this is now” OVERSIGHT meant to placate the angst, as her public applause for the misinformed fellow was meant to open the channels of communication. Someone needs to campaign against Queen Sheila; that’s obvious.
maverick muse on August 12, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Ahh, my former congresswoman. About the only thing worse than her was the guy she replaced.
On second thought, strike that. Now that I think about it, he was better to have around instead of her. He was a big single-payer supporting doofus, like she almost certainly is, but he had one of the highest absentee rates during his term in office (if I remember correctly, slamming him on this was how she bounced him in the primary). If he was still the rep, he would probably be absent half the time and thus would be effectively farking up the country half as much as Sheila.
djm1992 on August 12, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Honestly, I think this is exactly at the root of most of the anger expressed at these town halls.
Supposedly, opponents are drowning out voices and not letting representatives speak and answer the questions.
No, they’re letting them speak. They’re just appalled by the supposed answers.

Sheila Jackson-Lee represents everything that is wrong with Houston. She is perfect for the position.

I agree it is ethically terrible. However, when you take it out of context and look at the research in a fishbowl it goes like this. It was a multiyear study, like 5-10 years I think. At the onset of the study there was no treatment available period for syphilis–hence, a good research question is what are the long term effects of syphilis in this population?
It just so happens that in the interim part of the study, voila’, penicillin becomes available. That’s where it gets sticky–because the researchers continued on their original plan and denied curative treatment once it was available. The originial question, by itself, was a good question–however, denying medical care to people who could benefit from it was morally reprehensible.
This experiment, along with many others, have laid the foundation for our current institutional review boards.
The man making the assertion was projecting the morally reprehensible behavior of the scientific team to the larger government. It’s easy to paint with a wide brush in these cases–military medicine suffers it all the time. These broad assertions are unhelpful but effective in making the larger point that the government does not act in the best interests of those it is supposed to care for, when it has the opportunity to do so. There are other ways this point can be made in the realm of rationing, inefficiency, shortages and denials–all attributable to yes, the government.

A failure to treat when a viable treatment was available. Sort of like not treating the elderly for cancer just because they’re old or withholding heart surgery from infants with Down syndrome because their lives aren’t worth the cost to the system (NHS in UK 2001 and prior).

Esmerelda on August 12, 2009 at 12:05 PM
Similar, but different. You’ll start to see cost comparison research emerge from these leftist institutions depicting mortality following procedures. For example, there is an 85% mortality rate in the first year in elderly people if they suffer a hip fracture. Begs the research question, what costs could we save by not fixing/pinning those hips if all that it buys us is one year of life? Those are the costs Obama is looking to save. He’d like to “bend the curve” on those types of procedures. Mark my words.

No, they wanted Lonnnnger term outcomes on those folks. The emergence of penicillin was the fly in the ointment. It came out too soon I believe.
ted c on August 12, 2009 at 12:06 PM
I have a much different take on the Tuskegee Experiment. The Institute, started by Booker T Washington, attempted to track the medical progress of poor blacks who had later stage syphilis in the early 1930s. It did this by offering free medical care to people already suffering from the disease. No one was intentionally infected with the disease.
At that time, there were no real treatments for syphilis other than using expensive and dangerous doses of heavy metals. Most people, especial rural southern blacks during the Great Depression, could not afford these treatments. Penicillin did not become widely available as a treatment for syphilis until about 1947.
Remember the movie The Third Man? The defective drug that Harry Lime was distributing on the black market in post WWII Vienna was penicillin!
I do not know whether penicillin is an effective treatment for someone who has had syphilis for more than a dozen years. I do think that the experiment should have stopped once a reliable treatment was found. I am guessing that the fact that it continued is more a function of the desire for life by any bureaucracy.

In crime, there are always people with the lust for power, never only one. She may have things bound and sewn up playing the good fairy to all those on welfare and carrying their prejudices against crackers. But in any gang, there are always those in the power ranks looking for the opportunity to take what Sheila has away from her for themselves.
There are also those evangelical zealots willing to take on the likes of Queen Sheila to restore respect for the traditional values of hard work and integrity. There are a lot of televangelists in Houston. They ought to conference and find someone to counter her.
There would be a lot of returning veterans who would do well to get involved in local politics when they get home, to make a positive difference with education for results.

SJ-L is a professional politician who honed her skills on the Houston City Council and made he way to Congress because she’s black, that’s just the honest truth, not because she relevant. She’s a racist, through and through. She’s part of the “royalty” of the Houston Black community elites.
BTW, that looks like the Multipurpose Center on W. Gray and you’ve always been required to sign in at the front door and sign out when you leave. It’s a loose security measure for the building not the meeting or even related to the office you are visiting. It serves the purpose of counting daily visitors and knowing how many and where visitors are probably because the building houses a lot of services and organizations related to seniors and persons with disabilities.
Maybe the guy should have asked why instead of cooking up some ‘conspiracy’.
We have a lot of valid arguments against ObamaCare and a lot of real issues that need to be addressed. This guy let himself get pawned by SJ-L with his stupid question.

I’m not surprised by this video. I don’t really see liberals as being the types of politicians that actually care about anyone, much less their own constituents. I’m not surprised she couldn’t care less about what anyone things, because it’s precisely the type of non-representative government we’ve been heading towards, for years. Right now, we’re back at taxation without representation, because the legislature does not represent it’s constituents. It’s a deck stacked by people that claim that they know better for you, than you do. They’re people that think it’s perfectly alright to have boards of bureaucrats decide on what medical procedures you’re entitled to, and to ration out health care. They’re the same people that are so convinced it’ll be a whiz-bang great system, in spite of the fact that it’s never worked anywhere else in recorded history. There’s always the idiots that think they can do it better, and the DNC are those people, as well as the liberal, false-Republicans (like the McCains). I hope no one is shocked at how this politician outwardly couldn’t care less what anybody else outside the liberal plutocracy thinks, because if you are shocked, you haven’t been paying attention, and know very little about politics.

It does lend some credence to the nutcase opposition theories that attempt to challenge the legitimacy of those opposing government run health care. I have my own reasons for concern, though they have nothing to do with the development of racially specific genetic diseases.

Tracy Miller (cancer survivor) is a tireless worker for exposing the radical left policies; ridding the State of lackadaisical representation; and ensuring Politicians hear our voice. She is a treasure to us here in the Houston area and keeps us all informed of what is happening, both in Austin & Washington, D.C.
BTW….Sheila J-L is holding another Houston Town Hall tonight. This video was taken during her meeting yesterday, held during the early part of the day. The meeting tonight promises even more fun!!

Having grown up and lived in Houston and the area for most of my life I can tell you that SJL is just as she appears, self absorbed and non-apologetic for being just that.
It’s unfortunate but her base will always support her.

It’s as if she was shooting a scene for her opponents own political attack ad. If she isn’t gone in 2010 when this video will be undoubtedly aired in every campaign commercial against her, then something is seriously wrong.

She obviously realized that the questioner was a racist and then decided not to grant him a captive audience. I’d be willing to bet that after the video camera went off that guy called her a socialist.

“Yes….yes, I ordered a large pizza with
pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms and ham. Oh, and please deliver it to the side door…and don’t forget to bill it to the taxpayers”.
