Video: Sheila Jackson-Lee shows her respect for constituents

posted at 10:55 am on August 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) went back to her district in Houston to show her constituents her respect for their concerns, which she demonstrates at about the 4:30 mark of this video. When was the last time one of your employees interrupted a meeting with you to take a cell phone call, especially in the middle of a tough question? Listen to the reaction around the person taking the video:

“She’s not even listening. … Seriously? … I mean, come on.”

Keep watching for a couple of minutes afterward, because Jackson-Lee does worse when she’s paying attention. She claims that the public plan won’t impact the existence of private insurance, and then in the same breath claims it will compete against existing private plans to make them “better”. And while her constituent tells a difficult tale of cancer survival, the best Jackson-Lee can offer is that a public plan will allow people to lose weight without having to pay $19.99 to those programs we see on TV. Er, $19.99 is less than most co-pays; it’s certainly less than what one has to pay through Medicare without Medicare Advantage for a doctor visit.

And what exactly is wrong with Slim-Fast and other private sector nutrition programs? They’re accessible, they’re effective for at least some people, and by the way, insurance plans don’t cover them anyway. If that’s the best sales pitch ObamaCare and Jackson-Lee have, it’s going down in low-cal flames.

She is one of the most smug, arrogant members of congress.

And she looks like a gorilla. I’m not saying that in a racist way, it’s a fact. She looks like somebody put a dress on a baby gorilla and taught it how to say a few words and let it run for office.

And the people of Houston elected it.

sherry on August 12, 2009 at 11:07 AM

This is the problem. In all the town halls it is evident that the people in congress don’t even understand the situation. They don’t understand our health care system.

To them understanding the problems so that you can come up with solutions is secondary to their learning how to sell a bill. . . any bill.

These people would make great insurance salesmen. They’d get sued for misrepresentation to their clients, but they’d be great insurance agents until then. They’d sell like mad until their clients tried to get claims paid.

The problem is that they don’t understand the system. They have no clue how what they are doing will affect the system.

SJL is a total joke. She makes an ass of herself on a daily basis here in Texas. If a TV camera is around, she will find a way to get in front of it.

She’s the one who said the system used to name hurricane’s was racist because they didn’t use names like Shaniqua, Lacresia, or Shanaynay. She can’t keep a staff because she does things like make them pick her up to drive her 3 blocks. (her nickname in Congress is Driving Miss Daisy).

Other politicians can’t stand her, they ignore her if possible, and tolerate her out of necessity.

She is a total joke, but unfortunately her district covers the poorest part and richest part of Houston..so she is there to stay.

As far as Congress goes, Shiela Jackson Lee, just back from the Michael Jackson memorial and pop-fest, is one of the dullest knives in the drawer. I’ll never forget the true, classic story of her NASA visit during the Mars Rover mission — asking the engineers if they could use the rover to find where Neil Armstrong put the flag on Mars. The woman is a shining jewel of ignorance and arrogance.

They didn’t inject syphilis in the Tuskegee Study. They prevented use of new non-dangerous cures once they were available, ten years after the study began. But, apparently, the esteemed congress woman is willing to accept that the federal government knowingly injected Blacks with syphilis. Maybe because she doesn’t have access to Wikipedia:

Phoenician on August 12, 2009 at 11:13 AM

And the sad thing is that the minorities in her community just love her because she brings them pork constantly. But many, many people on more affluent neighborhoods have been re-districted to her. Maybe if they ALL get out and vote they could get rid of her but most likley no one will even run against her is the truth. In the energy capital of the country Houston, she voted FOR cap and tax because she got some guarantees about subsidies for poor blacks to pay their light bills. An obvious white lady called in on talk radio and stated she had been trying to talk to Shiela’s people about town halls and they did not even know her address was in their district. Shows how much she works for them right?

It’s funny, when I lived in Houston, Jackson Lee was my representative, now I live in the Austin area and Michael McCaul (a Republican) is my representative. The districts in Texas are drawn strangely. Anyway, Sheila Jackson Lee’s district covers the poorest, most inner-city parts of Houston. And the mayor of Houston has been a Democrat for as long as I can remember. It’s the suburbs AROUND Houston that are conservative. Tom Delay and Ron Paul are both from the surrounding Houston area.

dagny on August 12, 2009 at 11:26 AM

She claims that the public plan won’t impact the existence of private insurance, and then in the same breath claims it will compete against existing private plans to make them “better”.

This is the administration line, given by that great “Constitutional scholar” (who still hasn’t learned how to tuse the indefinite article, which is appropriate, since he doesn’t seem to understand any Constitutional articles, either) that the public plan will “provide competition” to the private sector.

This is the most un-Constitutional justification for any Congressional action that one can think of. Congress is not empowered to just open up a company to “provide competition” to the private sector, and anyone who argues this case is in such clear breah of our Constitution that s/he should be immediately impeached and removed from federal office.

It is pure insanity that these America-hating morons can get away with this blatant shredding of our Constitution, driving towards a federal government that has no limits on it, at all. Anything less than jail for those supporting this anti-Constitutional power grab will be totally unacceptable.

Jonah Goldberg wrote about this nonsense in an article at NRO. It prompted me to go to a Webpage that cdc.gov has about the matter–assuming in this case that liberals will allow us to trust the government–and it explains everything that you point out.

The feds got reamed over this awhile back and rightfully so. Therefore, for liberals to suggest that after all that grief the feds would go beyond merely withholding treatment (and information) from patients and go ten rephrehensible steps beyond to purposefully infect communities of color isn’t believable.

Keep trying, libs.
