Video: Nelson strikes back against ObamaCare

posted at 9:28 am on August 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Oh, it’s subtle, but Senator Ben Nelson’s new ad that will run in Nebraska makes one clear point to his red-state constituents — he’s not going to be corralled by Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, or Barack Obama on health-care reform. Nelson lays out his principles for reform, which include two mentions of cost control and no mention of universal health insurance or public plans. It’s a line in the sand, and it shows the difficulty that Democratic leadership will have in rolling Blue Dogs in either chamber after August’s protests:

Chris Cillizza at The Fix reports on Nelson’s ad campaign (via Jake Tapper):

Criticized by two liberal groups about his approach to President Obama’s health care reform proposal, Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson is hitting back, evidence of the issue’s potential political peril for the 13 Senate Democrats who represent states carried by Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) in 2008.

After Democracy for America and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee went up with ad hitting Nelson for “leading the charge to delay health reform” and accepting millions in campaign contributions from the insurance industry, Nelson launched his own commercial on Tuesday responding to the charges.

“You’ve probably been hearing a lot about health care reform and like too much stuff that comes out of Washington it’s hard to tell what is fact and what is fiction,” Nelson says in the ad, going on to outline his belief that a bill must keep spending down and aid small businesses. “You can count on me to always put Nebraska first,” says Nelson at the ad’s conclusion.

As the polling shifts overall towards opposition to ObamaCare and especially in Blue Dog constituencies, expect to see more pushback.  Nelson may be a Democrat, but he wants to remain employed (hey, it’s a tough economy out there!), and voters won’t send Nelson or any other Democrat back to Washington except in the most liberal districts and states after approving a bill that is becoming as unpopular as ObamaCare.  As these Representatives and Senators returned, shellshocked, to Washington, that message will be clear.

Blowback

At the end of the day, the blue dogs are gonna get a couple of lame concessions so they can claim they were a moderating influence, and then the’re gonna vote for it.

That’s my take on it as well, only I think more in terms of big hunks of cash as opposed to lame concessions.

I looked at his schedule the other day and he was going to ??Alaska??, but nothing for Nebraska.

rollthedice, Yakk077 and huskerdiva, have you heard of any meetings?

The Obamacare bill, in its current form, will not be passed. Some extremely watered version may be passed, in order to save face for Obama, but the revamping of American health care is dead.

I live in Lincoln, I’m not aware of any meetings. I think when push comes to shove Nelson’s going to vote for this cr@p.

Great! Another good Nebraskan!

Let’s hope Senator Nelson backs Nebraskans and not the President’s Health Scam.

Were you at one of the tea parties in Lincoln?

Nelson seems to be strong on this. I hope so.

a vote for a Dem in the Senate is a vote to keep looking at Dingy Harry as Majority Leader, and a vote for a Dem Congressman is a vote to keep looking at Nancy No Nothing Pelosi as Speaker of the House. Nebraskans need to vote out their local Dems so the national Dems are once again the minority.

Not only Nebraskans of course, but voters across the country…all politics is, indeed, local….

First Timer, Thank you , love this site. i never have much to say but enjoy the comments and discussions.

Nelson was never really all that liberal anyway. This is not surprising.

PappaMac….I had to read the whole thread….great, another Nebraskan.

A petition and many letters would be good to send to Senator Nelson.

I saw the commercial last night, but I worry that Ben will vote the same as he did on the Porkulus and the budget. He needs to remember that there are Republicans voted for him in the last election and he will not be as lucky in 2012 if he votes for the Obamabot Health Scam.

Glad to have you aboard!!!! I was a newbe at the last registration and I still like to watch the comments a lot of times rather than respond.

One more example of a Dem trying to distance himself from the Obama regime & Pelosi in particular. I wonder if that Congresscritter who Biden is planning to stump for will tell Biden to stay away.

From the NYPost. Obama is now drafting his own plan.

Thanks for the link. A very interesting read to be sure.

I am ever shocked at the attack on profits in all industries from Obama. Seriously, who other than lawyers does he feel is worthy of making a little dough?

If health care providers are un-worthy of making some money to pay back their mountainous student loans then who is?

If that is the meme we are now going to follow in this country then isn’t eating a human right too? I’m gonna go protest the grocery stores (who actually do make MASSIVE profits and without the risk of having the bejesus sued out of them like doctors do) for making money off what is the ‘essential human right’ to feed oneself.

I’m demanding grocery store reform! I want caps on prices! I want $0.05/lb peaches! Just cut food stamp spending to created the cost savings needed to cover the plan and we’re good.

Damn Obama is an idiot…

Isn’t that what they always say?

Buford Gooch on August 12, 2009 at 1:31 PM

I want what you’re drinking Buford. This isn’t over. The bill will be passed, but it will come in pieces over many years. But it will come eventually.
What impressed me was that he never once mentioned “The Constitution” or “my oath of office”. Not once.

Why don’t pols ever want to be in campaign ads where they are listening to someone? Why must they always be the ones doing the talking while their subservient constituents have to listen?
