Video: Astroturfing at Obama’s NH “town hall”

posted at 2:55 pm on August 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit has the video evidence of the strategy used by Barack Obama to get a roomful of complacent supporters at his Portsmouth, New Hamsphire “town hall” yesterday. The group he launched, Organizing for America, had supporters bused into the event — and they went directly to the head of the line to get into the forum. It’s the quickest and most effective way to ensure that the President doesn’t have to answer any tougher questions than those about the “mean signs” of his opponents:

Jim Treacher suggested yesterday on Twitter that we rename these Presidential forums to “greenhouses,” although Treacher admitted that Obama forums have more plants than the average greenhouse. Michelle has more on the effort to plant the “mean signs” question with the 13-year-old daughter of an Obama activist and contributor as well.

Andrew Malcolm says this shows a desperation in the administration, and that even with the White House organization, Obama’s losing on the ground:

While Obama’s poll popularity has slipped somewhat, the popularity of his keystone programs has slid dramatically. Now, we fully understand why the president set that early August deadline for a completed bill. His internal polls predicted the kind of coalescing opposition we’ve seen recently in congressional town halls around the country.

Yes, many are no doubt orchestrated. But no more so than the president’s somnolent town halls with campaign volunteers asking questions and instructions e-mailed to millions of supporters with directions on where to go and what to say to members of Congress this month. …

The protesters may well be about disruptive stagecraft. But they wouldn’t get so much attention, wouldn’t ring true to many, if they also weren’t tapping into an invisible and widespread vein of worry and fear, even anger, abroad in the land. Who doesn’t know someone just like them suddenly blindsided into hopeless unemployment? Is that a time that families willingly countenance bold change? Or a time to hunker down with the known?

Last winter Obama’s urgent haste to sign an expensive economic stimulation package seemed to make sense if further fiscal shrinkage was to be avoided. Ironically, his ongoing cascade of reform programs, all allegedly urgently needed — and expensive — seem to add to uncertainty and fears.

And why the rush? Two-hundred-thirty-three years into nationhood and 16 years after Clinton’s flopped healthcare plan, what was so crucial about getting one by early August?

Because they knew this would be a loser if it got to the August recess, that’s why, and Andrew nails it in his piece. Be sure to read it all.

Of course Obama stacked the house. He is terrible of script, and anyone who had asked a question that didn’t start with “How has your transormative presidency…” would have him stuttering like Porky Pig trying to rap up the show.

What a ‘toon.

When Obama was in Ohio a couple of weeks ago, he was appearing at my spouse’s high school and we signed up for the computer generated lottery. We didn’t get picked. But we found out afterward that if one really wanted to attend, one had to approach the Superintendent or the school principal. The lottery just makes everyone feel like they have an opportunity.

I am so tired of the softballs this guy is getting. You can’t be a great leader and be so thin skinned. The two just don’t go together. I am utterly bewildered by how anyone could have been taken in by his fake charisma. From day one his arrogance was evident to me. The sound of his voice actually makes me bristle. Ugh!

Think this will look like an “orchestrated” effort to ABC’s Charles Gibson? I doubt it. Gibson is as dishonest as they come.

Remember when he was interrogating Sarah Palin about the Bush Doctrine (which Gibson himself couldn’t explain)? The toughest question he asked barack Obama was “How does it feel to break through the glass ceiling?”

‘President Obama! President Obama! I have a question….’

“Yes, my dear. What is it?”

‘Oh, he winked at me. I’m melting. My brain is actually melting. Who was your favorite Back Street Boy?’

Robert Gibbs couldn’t even keep a straight face. He kept saying that we were sad that the president didn’t get yelled at…..I wish someone in that room had two brain cells to rub together so they could ask a pertinent question. I wonder if Gibbs and Meghan McCain get together to eat ho-hos and twinkies in the closet….

ksm- Here is a link to the news report that the above video was taken from (http://www.wmur.com/video/20358253/). The news report is from a local Portsmith, NH station, and the reporter specifically notes that the pro-reform protesters arrived on a bus.

The money quote, at least for me, comes from a random protester after the reporter noted that it had been raining: “A little rain for a lifetime of health care reform, hey, I’ll do it.” Wow, thanks for making such a big sacrifice for the cause. And didn’t you get the memo? It’s no longer health care reform. It’s health insurance reform.

The fact that the NH townhall meeting with Obama was filled with so many supporters may be easy to explain, even by a non-geek like me. Keep this recent article in mind when you follow my logic below: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/10/AR2009081002743_pf.html – U.S. Web-Tracking Plan Stirs Privacy Fears

Something to think about:
Remember that the White House has hired technically savvy people to handle their web presence, not to mention the campaign that put Obama into the White House. Google employees and others have joined the Administration.
The White House has frequently asked the public to submit questions and comments on various issues. People who do so typically fill in government web forms.
This process allows the WH to collect email and IP addresses for perhaps several million people. I’ll bet it also allows them to sort those comments according to the views expressed — opponents vs.supporters.
A presorted database would be a goldmine for controlling who gets access to Obama events.
All the WH would have to do to keep opponents out of a townhall is to program their computer to crosscheck all applicants for townhall tickets or other venues. If the IP or email address shows up on the opponents list, the computer ignores the request. If it shows up on the supporter database, it gets placed into the lottery.

Back in 2004, the Kerry-Edwards campaign rolled into town. Over 100 buses filled with SEIU thugs all wearing the same t-shirts forced the locals to view the events via TV monitors or struggling to listen a block or two away.

When we made an issue about SEIU “plants” all blatant in their being there, we were told many times, to include among the several here at H/A, that we were just being a bit oversensitive, perhaps a bit paranoid.

5 years later…the brown shirts purple shirts and astroturfers are so commonplace seems we hardly get a rise out of anyone when we bring it up.

Hmmmm.

I’m disappointed.

My theory on why the audience was so complacent was that they cross-referenced the web ticket applications, using name + address, with the Obama campaign database. This way they could deliberately filter out anybody who wasn’t a donor and then randomly select from that subset.

Rahm is losing his touch.

As soon as I saw the sweaty, slack-jawed look on the faces of the town hall participants, I knew it was one more LIE. I thought I’d lose my lunch when they started the “YES WE CAN” chants. And where was the Babs the Boxer comment about all the people in suits and dresses?

BTW, I’m new here too. I think Michelle is fantastic, and Hot Air just as awesome. Best conservative site on the web, as far as I’m concerned. Thanks for having me, Ed, AP and Michelle! :)

This is disturbing.

The Obama Administration wants to life the nine-year ban on cookies from federal websites.

“The Office of Management and Budget is considering reversing a nine-year ban on using “cookies” to track users’ preferences and interests on federal Web sites.”

“The shift in policy is being billed as a way for government to enter the 21st century and for federal agencies to use the same technology utilized on news sites, retail sites and social media networks.”

I like the way your thinking.

It’s going to start getting really ugly I think. I hope everyone can keep a cool head when confronted by the opposition. To those looking ahead to immigration this one is far from over and don’t forget cap & tax is still lying around in the senate.

There is about to be a whole lot of advertising dollars spent on Healthcare. For some people, if they see the same thing again and again it becomes the truth. With that in mind, over the next month or so be sure and pinch everyone you pass by and make sure their paying attention.

You should post this on the Kundra thread, too.

So much political theater, and no actual substance. Just like his campaign. I fear for our future. I really do.

Hard for me to get excited about this, given that it’s common Internet technology and easily blocked.

Are we going to complain about them using caller ID next?
