Video: Astroturfing at Obama’s NH “town hall”
posted at 2:55 pm on August 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit has the video evidence of the strategy used by Barack Obama to get a roomful of complacent supporters at his Portsmouth, New Hamsphire “town hall” yesterday. The group he launched, Organizing for America, had supporters bused into the event — and they went directly to the head of the line to get into the forum. It’s the quickest and most effective way to ensure that the President doesn’t have to answer any tougher questions than those about the “mean signs” of his opponents:
Jim Treacher suggested yesterday on Twitter that we rename these Presidential forums to “greenhouses,” although Treacher admitted that Obama forums have more plants than the average greenhouse. Michelle has more on the effort to plant the “mean signs” question with the 13-year-old daughter of an Obama activist and contributor as well.
Andrew Malcolm says this shows a desperation in the administration, and that even with the White House organization, Obama’s losing on the ground:
While Obama’s poll popularity has slipped somewhat, the popularity of his keystone programs has slid dramatically. Now, we fully understand why the president set that early August deadline for a completed bill. His internal polls predicted the kind of coalescing opposition we’ve seen recently in congressional town halls around the country.
Yes, many are no doubt orchestrated. But no more so than the president’s somnolent town halls with campaign volunteers asking questions and instructions e-mailed to millions of supporters with directions on where to go and what to say to members of Congress this month. …
The protesters may well be about disruptive stagecraft. But they wouldn’t get so much attention, wouldn’t ring true to many, if they also weren’t tapping into an invisible and widespread vein of worry and fear, even anger, abroad in the land. Who doesn’t know someone just like them suddenly blindsided into hopeless unemployment? Is that a time that families willingly countenance bold change? Or a time to hunker down with the known?
Last winter Obama’s urgent haste to sign an expensive economic stimulation package seemed to make sense if further fiscal shrinkage was to be avoided. Ironically, his ongoing cascade of reform programs, all allegedly urgently needed — and expensive — seem to add to uncertainty and fears.
And why the rush? Two-hundred-thirty-three years into nationhood and 16 years after Clinton’s flopped healthcare plan, what was so crucial about getting one by early August?
Because they knew this would be a loser if it got to the August recess, that’s why, and Andrew nails it in his piece. Be sure to read it all.

that little girl and her mother were residents of MASS. Tell us Barry, how did people that LIVE IN ANOTHER STATE end up asking you softball questions at a NH town hall?
No way to spin it and no one is fooled by the nonsense. Even in duplicity this administration is incompetant

I’m a member of Organizing For America … and I didn’t get the email. Hmmmmm…
Well, I am about 1,000 miles away soooo …
Anyone can join barackobama.com – I suggest everyone do so. I have an account and keep tabs on what they are doing in my region. I also like to “RSVP” for events and promise to show up with like ten other people – then I don’t show.
But, theoretically – you could join – be bussed to an event – get first in line priviledges – and then whip out a hardball question on Lil Barry and watch him squirm.
Make arrangements for getting home though beforehand.
Or just jump in a PT Cruiser with one of the Tea Party folks!

Now, about that flag@whitehouse.gov thing.

The ones who put the “adult” in “adult movies”, apparently.

Female Damien?
Still trying to figure out why a Massachusetts kid, with her Massachusetts Mom, were at a local New Hampshire townhall meeting.
Weren’t there enough Granite Staters to fill the seats? If not, why not? If so, why import semi-pro shills?

More like put the child in the line of fire, then hide behind her for cover.
Cowards fear the thinking and informed adult.

Vanishingly few Federal proposals of the past 100 years would survive calm, careful reflection. This is just the latest.

I think its funny we’re getting into the issue of GOP astroturfing when it’s the dems who basically turned it into an artform during these “last eight years of ah, well, failed economic policies”
BS

This is the Administration’s version of ‘human shields’, they put this child out there to take the enemy fire.
thomasaur on August 12, 2009 at 5:07 PM
I still can’t figure out how he could still be popular but his policies are slipping down the tubes. Never did understand the “Cult of Personality”. What comes out of his mouth tells me who Obama is. I have to say the only good thing I ever heard Oprah advise to viewers (this was years ago before the scales fell from my eyes)is: When people show you who they are, believe them.

Assoc. Press acknowledged that only 70% of the tickets were made public. This means that in a crowd of 1800 people, come 500 tickets were taken off the top before anyone else even had a chance.
Change we can’t believe in.

I never thought I would see those adjectives used to describe Hamas.

Not sure how many questions were asked in total but, if I remember, there were at least 4 or 5 questions asked from people who don’t currently support the bill, and they were specifically solicited by the Prez. Seems to me it’s possible that the President just went for a kid because everyone loves kids and it happens that her parent was a donor. Even if she was a pre-planned plant, the parity between supportive and skeptical questions makes the townhall anything but astroturfing.
CrankyIndependent on August 12, 2009 at 5:37 PM
Where in the sam hill is the GOP in this battle? Missing in action except for a limited few. The sarc/”leadership” seems to have decided to leave the health care battle to the people. Less chance of choosing a losing position which they might have to defend in the next election cycle.
I stand by my belief in the impending collapse of our once great country. Waiting for the tipping point.
Can we elect honest people to forestall the collapse? IMO politicians all succumb to the power and feeling of superiority over the filty masses. The ones who do not are forced out by both parties. They may postpone a collapse but not be able to stop it.
My original question remains. Where is the leadership?

This is great. The POTUS is using children as human shields.

Of *course* he Astroturfed the meeting. Precident Thin Skin can’t stand getting asked legit questions.

Worry ? Fear ? Anger ?
Not so much.
Experience explains it all. We the people recognize lies and don’t like it. Especially in the Highest Office.
The Com Org in Chief knows only one plan: press harder. I HOPE the most of this initial push is spent against the rocks of reality. That even the Dems recognize that 2010 is not their year. Already. And 2012 is endangered.
Lie, Bambi, Pelosi, et al, lie.

Dang that socialism thing!
We already ran out of other people’s money.

What a wonderful peaceful town hall meeting. Everyone was so civil, respectful and cooperative. It almost seemed staged.

They planted the child because they knew it would be hard to go after what she said. That and they knew
TOOLs like you would carry their water.
You should be ashamed of this government.

Many folks called in to the local radio station with reports of all the buses with Mass plates. And the large number of union goons.
The little girl wasn’t randomly chosen. Her mom is a major Bozo contributor.
Bozo is making one huge mistake after another. If Bozocare had any merit, he could defend it. He cannot defend it nor can his fragile ego withstand the blistering heat of hard cold FACT.

Cookies are standard procedure for “stateful” sessions. Do you mind that hotair.com is using cookies (provided by wordpress) to remember who you are so you don’t have to log in every time you post?
If you are so concerned, then get firefox and enable the privacy control that clears all cookies from your browser at the end of every session. That converts all cookies with a lifespan longer than your brower session to “session-only”. And, if that isn’t good enough, you can punch the “clear cookies” button any time you want to.
I’d rather that cookies be used to provide a nice stateful interactive experience than to have to retell, on every page, what I’m there for (either manually or via URL).

You have to bet that they are, and, furthermore, that every e-mail (including headers) sent to them or every comment made to a blog is being kept as well. They have to, under the Presidential Records Act. They cannot delete or dispose of any citizen communication, but must preserve it for the Archives.

geeeeez what a friendly group of folks. Not a dissenter among them. I can’t take all of the staged events. That is all this goup of plastic folks is about.

There is a video clip at WMUR that shows an angle that includes another woman next to Manning Hall while the 11 year old speaks. That other woman mouths the words as little Julia reads from her note card.

It’s the 5th principle of propaganda, demonize your enemy and accuse them of your acts.

You know, any and all of Teh Won’s appearances in front of large groups like this come off with a very creepy staged feeling. With this one, I kept expecting some little charming girl dressed in a peasant costume complete with a red neck scarf come up and hand him a huge bouquet of flowers. Isn’t that how it’s usually done at Dear Leader type functions?

Please, when you write articles about union thugs, HCAN, SEIU, et al., would you attempt to find out how many of them have connections with the Communist Party USA (http://www.cpusa.org/) or the Democratic Socialists of America (http://www.dsausa.org/dsa.html) or the International Socialist Organization (http://www.internationalsocialist.org/)? Use their web site search boxes. You may be surprised by the results.
It’s time to pin the donkey with the correct label.
