Paglia and the “liberal … servility toward Big Government”
posted at 2:17 pm on August 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Camille Paglia writes in today’s Salon that she’s still glad she voted for Barack Obama, mainly because of his expert foreign policy — an argument we’ll leave for another time. She pronounces herself shocked, shocked! at the amateurish attempts at handling domestic policy by the White House thus far, however, and blames the hard-Left wing of the Democratic Party for the most part. Paglia focuses her ire more on Nancy Pelosi rather than Barack Obama, and demands a new Speaker of the House:
I must confess my dismay bordering on horror at the amateurism of the White House apparatus for domestic policy. When will heads start to roll? I was glad to see the White House counsel booted, as well as Michelle Obama’s chief of staff, and hope it’s a harbinger of things to come. …
Case in point: the administration’s grotesque mishandling of healthcare reform, one of the most vital issues facing the nation. Ever since Hillary Clinton’s megalomaniacal annihilation of our last best chance at reform in 1993 (all of which was suppressed by the mainstream media when she was running for president), Democrats have been longing for that happy day when this issue would once again be front and center.
But who would have thought that the sober, deliberative Barack Obama would have nothing to propose but vague and slippery promises — or that he would so easily cede the leadership clout of the executive branch to a chaotic, rapacious, solipsistic Congress? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom I used to admire for her smooth aplomb under pressure, has clearly gone off the deep end with her bizarre rants about legitimate town-hall protests by American citizens. She is doing grievous damage to the party and should immediately step down.
Gee, who would have thought that a Senator with three years’ experience in national politics, with almost no track record of accomplishment in the Senate or the state legislature before that, would have proposed nothing concrete but “vague and slippery promises”? Who could have predicted that? I’ll name a few: Joe Scarborough. Allahpundit. Ed Morrissey. John McCain. Hillary Clinton. In fact, just about every critic of Obama noted his lack of accomplishment prior to running for office, but the media couldn’t be bothered to report on it — although they spent millions making the same argument about Sarah Palin.
Paglia wonders why Obama was in such a rush to get a bill passed:
I just don’t get it. Why the insane rush to pass a bill, any bill, in three weeks? And why such an abject failure by the Obama administration to present the issues to the public in a rational, detailed, informational way? The U.S. is gigantic; many of our states are bigger than whole European nations. The bureaucracy required to institute and manage a nationalized health system here would be Byzantine beyond belief and would vampirically absorb whatever savings Obama thinks could be made. And the transition period would be a nightmare of red tape and mammoth screw-ups, which we can ill afford with a faltering economy.
She then answers her own question:
But somehow liberals have drifted into a strange servility toward big government, which they revere as a godlike foster father-mother who can dispense all bounty and magically heal all ills. The ethical collapse of the left was nowhere more evident than in the near total silence of liberal media and Web sites at the Obama administration’s outrageous solicitation to private citizens to report unacceptable “casual conversations” to the White House. If Republicans had done this, there would have been an angry explosion by Democrats from coast to coast. I was stunned at the failure of liberals to see the blatant totalitarianism in this incident, which the president should have immediately denounced. His failure to do so implicates him in it.
They rushed the bill through Congress because they knew how Americans would react to a government takeover of health care: angrily. They want to have government take over everything, including energy production through cap-and-trade, because liberalism is an elitist philosophy. They don’t care what the American people think except only to the extent that it affects the vote. They believe that Americans can’t act in their own best interests as individuals, and so government must have a small cadre of experts making those choices for them.
Paglia gets high marks for pointing out the obvious (at Salon, no less). The motives of the Democrats pushing massive legislation at break-neck speed are becoming too obvious for even the media and independents to ignore. As for her sudden discovery of amateurishness in the White House, I’ll give Paglia a Captain Louis Renault Award, in an affectionate spirit:

Read this earlier. While I disagree with her assessment that Obama must clean up Bush’s buffoonery (I don’t think Bush did anything that requires clean up), she is right on about Pelosi.

Camille Paglia has been my favorite liberal for some time. She’s fearless and she’ll tell the left when they’ve stepped in it, just like Hitchens.

I have yet to find more redeeming features of the left than I can count on one hand.
I still have 4 fingers to go in fact. Every time I use a second finger on that hand they quickly negate it.
At this point even if the democrat party was filled with Paglias I wouldn’t be able to force myself to vote their way. If another McCain popped up as the GOP candidate I’ll just vote independent.

Of course Paglia is harder on Nancy Pelosi (not that Pelosi doesn’t deserve it), but Paglia is a self-hating women who always channels that self-hatred into vehement attacks on other women while twisting herself into a pretzel to excuse men like Obama. How Paglia can call herself a “feminist” with a straight face is beyond me.
Dark Star on August 12, 2009 at 2:27 PM
You know what Ed, they may be right here. And you know what else? That’s our right. I’ve been told repeatedly that I vote or believe contrary to my own best interests inasmuch as I am repelled by government handouts that would certainly benefit me. So be it. The Dems want victims and I refuse to play my part. While I may be down now I firmly believe that will not always be the case and I don’t need the government to bail me out.

I mark the second Tuesday of every month when Camille Paglia’s column hits salon.com.
The woman is smart, funny, informed, and a great writer.

Camille still wants to believe the best in Obama, but she has to look past the malaise.
She already saw the phoniness, arrogance, and idiocy of Pelosi and others, but how can she not see it in Obama?

While I disagree with her in a number of issues, I love Camille Paglia. She’s one of a very small group of liberal thinkers in this country who is intellectually honest… and her writing is superb.

It’s really really hard to ignore that she likes Pres. Obama’s foreign policies. I think the time is getting close that the House of Representatives are going to get thrown under the bus. I am surprised he hasn’t done it on the stimulus bill but I guess since it passed no one cares but this healthcare bill is too awful to be called Obamacare.
Cindy Munford on August 12, 2009 at 2:31 PM
The responses to this article over at Salon put on display alllll you need to know their readership…
Save for a couple of eyeroll-worthy phrases here and there, Paglia gave us an extremely insightful (for a lib, at least…) and well-written article here. She’s absolutely spot-on about Pelosi, and even has the cajones to put in her own objections to ObamaCare. She even gave Sarah Palin some—not a lot, but some—props for her “death panel” comment. Overall, great article.
KellyBomelly on August 12, 2009 at 2:31 PM
This lady is proud of her vote for a man who bold-face lies to the public….”I’ve never wanted a single-payer system”…who admits the government post office is a failure and uses that for his argument to sell government health care to the dumb masses. Lady methinks you have been drinking to much kool-aid.

I keep thinking about (and this isn’t anywhere close to a complete list) his quick resolution of Iraq and Afganistan, Hil’s stunning Congo presser illustrating our smart diplomacy in action, the seemingly neverending magical apology tour, and the impressive results of getting China and India to deal with GW (/sarc for the oblivious).

Oh, come on! When did liberals ever object to big government except as related to the military? Most big government programs are Democrat creations fully endorsed by liberals. The one politician in recent years to try to reign in big government, Ronald Reagan, is thoroughly despised by liberals.

Obama is getting what he wants, something that will knock America down a couple of notches. What better way than a program that lowers the quality of health care to special needs citizens like seniors, creates multiple new government inroads into citizens’ private lives, and forces the country further in debt so it will have less money for defense in the future?

If she had the chance to vote for this apocalyptic clown all-over-again, she would, just to keep McCain out of office (and don’t make the mistake of thinking me a McCain booster; I despise his idiocy, just as much as Obama’s). She deserves nothing but a boot in the ass for helping put this Marxist into the White House to destroy America. The only real complain she’s got is that he’s inconveniencing her while he does it.

If you read Johah Goldberg’s book (Liberal Fascism) and accept his historical scholarship, you can clearly see the connection between Obama and certain historic figures.
