CNN poll: Palin’s net favorable rating at -9

posted at 5:20 pm on August 12, 2009 by Allahpundit

The good news? Fox News and WaPo had her at -13 a few weeks ago. The bad news? Given the trend lines, it’s now obvious that her resignation has cost her some national support.

Thirty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday have a favorable opinion of the former Alaska governor and last year’s Republican vice presidential nominee. That’s down seven points from a poll conducted in May, and it’s also nine points lower than the 48 percent who now say they now view Palin unfavorably. Forty-three percent viewed Palin negatively in May.

“Most of that change has come among Republicans and conservatives,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “GOP voters still like Palin — two-thirds continue to have a favorable view of her — but she is not as wildly popular among GOPers as she was in the spring, when eight in ten Republicans had a favorable view of her.”…

“A 39 percent favorable rating makes it that much tougher for Palin to become president should she decide to run in 2012. Her favorable rating is almost identical to the numbers that former vice president Dan Quayle got just after leaving office in 1993,” says Holland.

The margin of error for the Republican sample is 6.5 points but these numbers do jibe with what Fox News found: In that poll too, 67 percent of Republicans viewed her favorably. Most pols have their polling ups and downs over time (see, e.g., Hillary Clinton) but so far it’s been a downhill slide for the ‘Cuda. My sense is that the media/SNL caricature of her is so vivid in the public imagination that it’ll be unusually difficult for her to undo the bad impression; even the “death panel” comment might cost her, especially with fellow Republicans like Isakson and Lisa Murkowski spinning it as “nuts” and offensive. Exit question which I don’t think I’ve ever asked before: If she decides she’s momentarily too radioactive to win the nomination and bows out of 2012, whom do the Palinistas break for? I can’t see them being real thrilled with either Romney or Huck. Does some Palin-esque dark horse jump in once she decides not to run in hopes of snapping up her base? If so, er, who is it?

lorien1973 on August 12, 2009 at 5:21 PM

Not to worry, though, because the “death panel” comment has been completely rejected by the Purveyors of Truth (the MSM, Pelosi, and Obama). It’s disappointing to see Republicans coming out and calling that comment “nuts.” I admit the comment is rhetorical overkill, but given both (i) Obama’s public concession that elderly patients might be given pain pills instead of life-extending surgery and (ii) the end-of-life counseling provisions in the health care bill, it’s not so out-of-line as to be fairly called “nuts” or a lie.

Frankly, can anyone explain how consulting to help people plan the complicated decisions that come at the end of life equates to a “death panel.” Is there evidence that people will be advised to off themselves?

Sarah Palin is the star of the GOP and conservatives.
If you really think Huckabee, Romney, Santorum, Pawlenty, etc. would garner any enthusiasm, I’ll say this: be prepared to say President Obama passed 2012.

Obama and his minions keep attacking Sarah. She is on his brain, and he is afraid of her.
She is the only person in the GOP to attack this guy without being afraid to do so and is a WINNER.
If the GOP wants to make the same mistake again, nominating a Gerald Ford instead of a Reagan, go ahead. But don’t complain when Obama wins again.

myrenovations on August 12, 2009 at 5:29 PM

f she decides she’s momentarily too radioactive to win the nomination and bows out of 2012, whom do the Palinistas break for?

Significant strains of the Palin movement seem to be rebelling against GOP orthodoxy in general. She’s personally important, but equally important is the sense that many formerly die-hard GOP supporters are recognizing that there’s little difference between the two national parties. Particularly when it comes to corporate ownership of the legislative process (conservative voters call it “special interests” to avoid seeming too lib) and the fact that the entire Congress hates to actually answer to their constituents, witness the utter inability of any member who supports the healthcare bill to actually sell it ordinary Americans (this from the party that supposedly represents the people).

Given all that, I think that it’s very likely that Palinistas may break for a third party, libertarian or something along those lines. Or, perhaps, a young Pat Toomey-ish candidate will spring up in 2012 primary, Palin will endorse them and her followers may support him too. The question is will the rest of the GOP base go for him or roll the Romney dice.

CrankyIndependent on August 12, 2009 at 5:30 PM

We have some real important issues on the national stage and the most important being getting these congresscreeps the hell out of Washington in 2010.

Palin’s poll numbers make no difference. The only thing that matters is if she starts drawing huge crowds to fundraising campaign events. In the meantime I would rather not read about her poll numbers.

ORconservative on August 12, 2009 at 5:32 PM

And CNN’s favorable polling is at -50 . . . who cares what CNN says. CNN can go straight to hell.

Da** it Allah just when I was warming up to you after last nights QOTD. Okay, lets go thru this….

1. Just like the other MSM “push polls” this one surveyed ADULTS, not likely or registered voters.

2. Why did CNN wait over a week to release this poll? Could it be that they hold it until Palin is having a GREAT week?

3. Where are the internals and weightings of the poll?

4. If these push polls are so valid and she’s so irrelevant, why is the POTUS, WH Press Sec, and MSM keep trying to debunk her “death panel” phrase? Me thinks their internal polling shows something different.

Sorry, i’ll wait until next week’s PPP poll and next Ras poll. BTW, you also for got to mention the AOL poll where almost 200K people (who could only vote once) gave her a 50-42 F/UF rating.

And finally to answer your exit question… as of right now, NO ONE. None of those idiots are speaking out or taking on Obama the way Palin is.

You really need to get over your twisted hating obsession w/ Palin and just accept she’s a player if she wants to be.
