CNN poll: Palin’s net favorable rating at -9
posted at 5:20 pm on August 12, 2009 by Allahpundit
The good news? Fox News and WaPo had her at -13 a few weeks ago. The bad news? Given the trend lines, it’s now obvious that her resignation has cost her some national support.
Thirty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday have a favorable opinion of the former Alaska governor and last year’s Republican vice presidential nominee. That’s down seven points from a poll conducted in May, and it’s also nine points lower than the 48 percent who now say they now view Palin unfavorably. Forty-three percent viewed Palin negatively in May.
“Most of that change has come among Republicans and conservatives,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “GOP voters still like Palin — two-thirds continue to have a favorable view of her — but she is not as wildly popular among GOPers as she was in the spring, when eight in ten Republicans had a favorable view of her.”…
“A 39 percent favorable rating makes it that much tougher for Palin to become president should she decide to run in 2012. Her favorable rating is almost identical to the numbers that former vice president Dan Quayle got just after leaving office in 1993,” says Holland.
The margin of error for the Republican sample is 6.5 points but these numbers do jibe with what Fox News found: In that poll too, 67 percent of Republicans viewed her favorably. Most pols have their polling ups and downs over time (see, e.g., Hillary Clinton) but so far it’s been a downhill slide for the ‘Cuda. My sense is that the media/SNL caricature of her is so vivid in the public imagination that it’ll be unusually difficult for her to undo the bad impression; even the “death panel” comment might cost her, especially with fellow Republicans like Isakson and Lisa Murkowski spinning it as “nuts” and offensive. Exit question which I don’t think I’ve ever asked before: If she decides she’s momentarily too radioactive to win the nomination and bows out of 2012, whom do the Palinistas break for? I can’t see them being real thrilled with either Romney or Huck. Does some Palin-esque dark horse jump in once she decides not to run in hopes of snapping up her base? If so, er, who is it?

Renditions Buffoonery

Ya….I thought so. That story was old. Scott Horton of Harper’s magazine debunked that bogus LATimes story, which seemed fishy from the get-go. Obama maintains that he is committed to ending extraordinary rendition, and as far as we know he has.
Of course if he hasn’t, there is a nice jail cell waiting for him

jhffmn,
uhhhhh….well let’s hope Obama is not doing it.
I wasn’t really thinking about that issue when I voted Constitution Party. I was more thinking about spending and the wars, which I didn’t expect much from Obama. But had some leftist gotten in my face and urged me to vote Obama on that issue alone, I just may have done it.
I would find that highly offensive as would many other people who might be inclined to support him, but as he seems to not be doing it.
Only time will tell.

I think we need a very serious, intellectual person with heaps of charisma with the average person feel that Palin has. I don’t see that person on the horizon yet.
We need shock and awe in 2012 if this nation is to avoid disaster….whether we continue as nation or go down like the USSR really is at stake. In fact our demise could be worse than the Soviet fate. At least they remained somewhat intact. We could implode so absolutely that all that is left is chaos and anarchy and China with the UN’s help would have to come in and reclaim what China has already purchased….the USA.

Look, I just read her response to Obama on healthcare and I think by 2012 she’s going to be fine. Don’t know if she’ll run, but I don’t see a problem for her if she does.
I do see a problem with Obama because if he continues spending like this there’s no way he’s getting a second term. I have some advice for him. If you want to save your presidency and probably get a second term- STOP SPENDING NOW! I’m not even that fond of you. In fact if I wanted to be a jerk, I’ll let you dig your own political grave with the deficit spending and phony townhalls. But considering that everything you do affects me I’m telling you to stop.
And for the trolls: it’s official
Bush 8 year deficits = $1.3 trillion
Obama Jan-Aug 2009 deficits = $1.2 trillion
White House 2009 estimate (yes the White House, the one Obama lives in) = $1.8 trillion
If I hear “But Bush spent…” one more freaking time, I’m going to cyber slap you.

The bootlick media will be freaking out today about her new posting at Facebook.
In it she says….
Yesterday President Obama responded to my statement that Democratic health care proposals would lead to rationed care; that the sick, the elderly, and the disabled would suffer the most under such rationing; and that under such a system these “unproductive” members of society could face the prospect of government bureaucrats determining whether they deserve health care.
Let’s just watch and see……she aims this at the elderly (who will be unplugged). THEY will defeat this DEATHCARE bill.

You are right about all that you say darwin, but truth is, Palin is gonna need even thicker skin than she already has. I trust Sarah on energy policy and taxes….I trust her period.
1) If she runs…she cannot win. For some reason she has become too polarizing. Those horrible interviews and sound bite are too fresh. She needs to learn to beat the media at their own game.
2) 2016 seems more likely
3)2012-2016 are going to go down as the most traumatic times in US history. We will need a George Washington or Abe Lincoln in the Whitehouse and I’m sorry but sarah Palin is not quite there yet.

Goodeye_Closed,
I could not agree with you more. Palin is terribly polarizing. My two elderly grandmothers, both conservative farmers’ wives, only have antenna TV channels and thus watch CBS and ABC for their news. (Despite my efforts to discourage them.) They both hate Palin. I think she’s got it right on energy and her America-first thinking, she’s obviously resilient, but she blew it quitting the governorship early. I’m as common as anyone, a farmer married to a truck driver, but I wish Palin would quit dropping all the g’s in words. Cute and colloquial is not what we need right now-and, if Palin was a dumpy, unattractive woman, I don’t think we’d be looking at 1000-comment threads. (Or had ever even heard of her at all.) Sorry, I do like her and respect her, but I had to say it.

HoneyWagon on August 13, 2009 at 9:31 AM
She’s not “polarizing” because of what she’s said or done … she’s polarizing because the media said she is.
All it will take is for her to start speaking and getting her message out. She can handle the media and the interviews were a learning experience for her. I guarantee that will never happen again.
I’ll tell you this. If we can’t run a candidate who doesn’t piss off at least some people then that candidate isn’t worth running.
This compromise bullcrap must stop. Run on principles and stick to principles. Quit compromising with the enemy.

Personally, I would like to see Sarah in the Senate, Where she could deliver a reliable conservative vote. And she would have little trouble defending that seat.
RustBelt on August 13, 2009 at 9:40 AM
At this point, I think Sarah Palin is the only candidate that can win in 2012. As you see in these town hall meetings, it’s the silent majority that, when awoken, can and does make a difference….but they need a reason because they actually BELIEVE in their positions and we have not given them a candidate who mirrors them in recent years. Palin does that. She will anger the dems and MSM, but that is just more of a reason to believe she can do it.
tatersalad on August 13, 2009 at 9:58 AM
Well part of the reason is because of the media but look at conservatives where her support may be in the 60% range.
We’re not talking RINOS here. True conservative love Sarah but are realistic about her chances and the likelyhood that she has what it takes to break through the media and liberal attack dogs and STILL be effective in turning this socialist ship around 180 degrees and lead the country.
Example: Sarah Palin should NOT even mention Perez Hilton’s name much less address something he said or did. That is best left for the tabloids.
I think this arguement is moot. Sarah is probably getting out of public service and will be an effective activist where she can determine where and when she works and is able to put family first….nothing wrong with that.
Goodeye_Closed on August 13, 2009 at 9:58 AM
Don’t take this personally but you need to change your viewing angle.
Sarah Palin controls the media and has them in her back pocket and they don’t know it. She doesn’t need the media, doesn’t need the RNC and is completely self sufficient.
The media and the left have thrown everything they have at her and they failed. Of course they’ll continue to attack but let them. Anything they do will only damage them, not her.
darwin on August 13, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Isn’t truth refreshing? End of life panel is a new meme. Let’s call it what it is…a DEATH PANEL because it deals with the death of the individual, not length and quality of life. Besides the end of ones life could be tomorrow, so why discuss it at all? Maybe the perception of Palin has diminished because we all know that east coast liberal elite schools are where to get the best education, being an intellectual is far better to discern what’s true, and dodging bullets and plain common sense is so passe!

The Republican party either gets new life via Palin (true conservatism) or continues to die. There is very little difference between the old guard RINO Congress and classical liberals. Conservatives have not been this energized for a candidate since Reagan. Third parties are usually viewed as spoilers, sapping 5-15% of support from the challenger. However, recent history shows Clinton winning with 37% of the popular vote, Obama had no plurality. Palin can win as an outsider.
conservativedoc on August 13, 2009 at 12:36 PM
Gotta agree with Goodeye here. I know conservatives (including myself) would love to see Sarah become an effective force in 2012, but, unfortunately, I think we’d risk doing more harm than good (both to her and the party) if we put her out there as our nominee before she’s ready, and I can’t see how she’ll possibly be ready by 2012.
I can’t help but think if you want what’s best for the future of the party and for Sarah Palin, you’ll have to hope she has the wisdom to sit out 2012 and wait for a more opportune time to run for President. It’s not like she’s our “only hope.”

PappyD61 on August 13, 2009 at 1:22 PM
The candidates themselves didn’t give us McCain; the fact that conservatives couldn’t decide between the two did. I think either of these guys has a solid shot against Obama in 2012. I think the election will be ours to lose.
Our biggest risk will be the same in 2012 as it was in 2008: conservatives split their votes between too many different candidates and the moderates unite around a single RINO, and our second biggest risk is that we nominate someone who shares many of Obama’s flaws (extremely polarizing, lacking substance, and inexperienced).
This is why too many conservative candidates who aren’t ready to face Obama in 2012 (i.e. Palin) jumping in the race scares me. Let a few proven conservative candidates duke it out (i.e. Romney, Huck, Newt) and save the rising stars for an election further down the road (i.e. Palin, Jindal). Otherwise we could end up with another McCain as our nominee.

QUESTION: How can Palin’s net favorable rating be at -9 when she just succeeded in getting health bill Finance Committee to drop the end-of-life provision; the so-called “death panel” language? That seems to be something no Republican in Senate or House could accomplish. So now citizen Sarah Palin is the most effective Republican in the nation. Who knew?
IntheNet on August 13, 2009 at 3:00 PM
Possible Answer: Effective partisans on high profile issues are not necessarily the best candidates for popular election.
clorensen on August 13, 2009 at 3:20 PM
To all of you who just can’t see Sarah Palin being viable in 2012, let me remind you of something.
I could not see a radical leftist one term Senator being able to take down the feared Clinton machine and move into the White House. Just. Couldn’t. See. It.
It’s not the ’90′s anymore. The news cycle and the digestion of information by the public is much faster now than it ever has been. On the information super-highway, the speed limit has been raised from 65 to 125. Sarah can accomplish what she needs to in a much shorter period of time than it took Reagan in his “wilderness years”.
2012 is an eternity away in political time. Remember the inevitability of Rudy vs. Hillary?
Sarah’s viability will be determined by how effective she can be from this point forward.
I’m looking forward to riding that trail with her, whether she actually runs or gets behind someone else.
I think she will run, when %75 of the Republican voters demand it.
