Why Obama’s town-hall appearances won’t help
posted at 9:30 am on August 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The unexpected furor over the administration’s plans for revamping the nation’s health-care industry has forced Barack Obama to hit the campaign trail again. Obama plans to visit three town-hall meetings this week in order to lend his star quality to Democrats attempting to sell the plan to a hostile electorate. Given the President’s history with town-hall forums and the stakes involved, it’s not likely to help him much at all:
President Barack Obama, moving to counter noisy opposition to his health care overhaul proposal, will hold three public town hall meetings this week as his advisers push back against what they describe as false “scare tactics.”
Obama is scheduled to appear on Tuesday in Portsmouth, N.H. at 1 p.m., at an event expected to draw roughly 1,800 participants. His goal this week, advisers said, is to address the concerns of people who already have health care and to illustrate how those people would benefit from adjustments to the current system.
Along the way, Obama will address specific health care topics — none of them new, but each important, advisers said. On Tuesday, he will talk about people who are denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions. On Friday, he will hold a town hall meeting in Bozeman, Mont., to discuss the plight of people dropped from their health insurance plans because of an illness. And at a third session on Saturday, in Grand Junction, Colo., Obama will raise the subject of high out-of-pocket costs, such as co-payments and deductibles.
First, anyone expecting a real town-hall forum to occur with Obama in attendance is deluding themselves. Even the press — even Helen Thomas — criticized Obama the last time he held a “town-hall meeting” on health care. Each of these three meetings will carefully screen attendees and get the questions in advance, to minimize embarrassment to Obama.
Beyond that, town-hall meetings won’t solve the problem of national rejection of ObamaCare. People want insurance reform, but they don’t want a government takeover of the system. The big problem is the legislation itself. If Obama wants to fix that, then he needs a meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, not the people of Bozeman and Portsmouth.
The legislators who have to hold town-hall meetings without Obama won’t get to use the Secret Service to screen attendees. They need to connect to their constituents in order to get re-elected in 2010, and their constituents are angry at an overspending, overreaching federal government that doesn’t know its place. Even if Obama could be in all of these and screen out the dissenters, they’d still be in the districts — and ready to replace ObamaCare-supporting Representatives next year.

Hopefully some news outfits use this opportunity to replay Obama’s 2007 NH campaign appearence where he cleary stated he intends to implement single-payer healthcare by the end of his first term.

The show begins at 1:00 PM Eastern today. I’m sure the state-run media will carry it.
Obama tends to botch high profile speaking engagements in one of two directions. Either he trivializes them by issuing droning, incomprehensible speeches (think of his European tour last year, the Greek Temple speech, and even his bizarre Inaugural speech).
Or else he chokes the message with extemporaneous quips, stupid but revealing statements about bringing a gun to a knife fight, calling policemen stupid, or, well just check the archives of Obamateurisms and you’ll get the idea.
Bottom line, can anyone give one example of a high-profile, must-win Obama appearance that he simply hit out of the park? No, you can’t. This is not Babe Ruth. It’s Mighty Casey at bat!
Popcorn, hotdogs, and beer. 1:00 PM eastern.

I always hated when protesters shouted at Bush. It looked immature and stupid. Is there something to be said for whether the president should get a different kind of treatment than congressmen? Will shouting him down for saying something stupid help the cause or make protesters look like fools?

AGAIN: Attendees should be prepared to make signs that report what’s going on.
If e.g. they’re letting SEIUgoons in the back door, make signs on the spot reporting that fact.
“We weren’t allowed in”
“Closed shop: Union attendees only”
“Only union goons allowed in”
etc
So take blank signs and paint or markers and extra poster paper and report the news as it happens for the cameras -both the MSM cameras and the new media cameras. You could be on CBS -or better, HotAir- tonight.

Specter has committed to not supporting a bill that provides coverage to illegal aliens. He’s gotten criticism about the complexity of the bill–from a junior high teacher. A number are expressing distrust, and a guy just mentioned that Specter should sponsor a bill for term limits.
Specter’s a fool. So far, one lady has expressed vague support for health reform. He’s getting grief about access to bank account information currently in a House bill. He’s agreed to oppose it.

If Obama lets in his supporters, there may be someone stupid, or smart enough, to ask him if he supports single payer. It is his supporters that want him to push single payer because He Won.

I thought some readers here might find it interesting to know about another government health care plan that I am dealing with just today.
My 90 year old father was hospitalized in March, suffering from a combination of a UTI, an inner ear infection and dehydration. At 90 he lives at home alone and as befits this old WWII veteran, he is fiercely proud of his independence.
He has medical coverage, as most folks his age, from Medicare and a private supplemental carrier. The combination of coverage normally gives him 100% coverage of medical expenses. That is when the Medicare bureaucrats don’t get too involved. Then neither insurer pays.
During his March medical issue, all the bills were submitted by providers to both insurance systems. And all were paid except for one bill, which recently became an issue with him since he got a notice from the hospital that his account was delinquent. If you have any of that general left in your family, you know they take those things very seriously, even if they don’t understand most of what all the billing mumbo-jumbo is saying.
So, he asked me to investigate and see what was needed. Turns out that someone in Medicare decided that his ride to hospital in an ambulance was not “medically necessary”. Now mind you, they didn’t meet him, didn’t ask him, and didn’t make any correlation between that decision and the facts that a 90 year old man who calls 911 because he is dizzy and can’t stand up, just might be smart enough to realize that he should not try to drive to the ER himself. So a clerk in some office decided that while all the treatment for his condition was medically necessary, getting to the hospital to receive that treatment was not.
Of course, I am told I can appeal the decision. I am, and I will not be surprised to find out they change their decision and pay the bill. And they will saw, “see, we are fair”. But they will again fail to grasp the unnecessary worry and fear that their stupidity imposes on the some of the most vulnerable citizens. I have to take steps to insulate my Dad now from these issues, and take some of his independence away to keep him from being worried by these idiots. I cannot explain this to him in any way that will not make him hesitate to call 911 next time he gets sick, because he’ll wonder if it is necessary.
And these people wonder why we don’t want them to have even more control of our health care systems.

Mike: God Bless you and your father.
This was a great example of how the government will “cut costs.” They won’t tell you that you can’t have something, they know that it’s something you need, then you submit/appeal for reimbursement or coverage, and you get denied after the fact. Most key medical decisions involving care and necessity are made PRIOR to the filing. Mike’s dad couldn’t obtain preapproval for an ambulance ride, he would’ve gotten sicker. The Obama administration knows this, which is why they say “You can keep your insurance” but what they won’t tell you is “Your insurance might not KEEP YOU” so it’s a two way street and Obama only tells half truths. I might be able to keep my wife, but if she wants to divorce me then I’ve still got problems right? Same same same

Its pretty simple, lies are only effective when people believe them, that ship has sailed, and credibility for anything else the President or the Democrats come up with is out the window too, so from now on, the more Obama talks, the more he’s just full of it.
I think on the campaign trail Barack convinced a lot of people they would get free health care, they just needed a reminder of how liberal government works.

Uh let me guess. The NH town hall event will have BO with his US flag lapel pin. He will be wearing a red tie. Probably a flag or two surrounding the stage. And of course TOTUS for his initial brief statement.
The stage will also include 30 or 40 people in stadium seating behind him. There will be your token whites, a few blacks, and maybe an asian thrown in just for the cameras. They will be spaced perfectly to assemble a PC crowd. They will have those white signs with bold black block lettering saying “Thank you”.
The audience has been pre-screened and will be filled with friendlies. There will probably be a senior or a sympathetic HC provider with some hardluck story, that we later find out is a plant for some organization that will get a nice piece of gov’t dollars if passed.
He will answer questions that were already submitted where he can expound ever so elegantly on a bill he hasn’t read. Answers that will later be shown as a contradiction to what we already know about the bill.
The media will be astounded by his grasp for the “facts” and report how the debate is over.
Did I leave anything out?
jbh45 on August 11, 2009 at 11:03 AM
Let Obama speak, he’s the one killing this bill.
The President knows your doctor is running tests that she shouldn’t, doing surgeries she shouldn’t, using first-rate drugs when generics will do just as fine. The President knows grandma didn’t need a new knee, when painkillers would do her just as well. The President promises you won’t have all the care in the world, but what his commission allows you to have will be the “best” care. Look at how he runs GM. Look at how he runs TARP. That’s who’ll rein in your doctor.
Nobody interuppted this President with a puppet, or shouted him down. Everybody has heard him loud and clear –and that’s why they’re mad as hell!

Kudos to Fox for showing the Spector townhall. They did it to show these people are not a “mob” and that they actually know what they are talking about and are educated about the bill. It is much more effective without the shouting and yelling, but I understand why they sometimes feel they have to do that. Either they feel like they are not listened to or the congressperson lies in their answer, which they do a lot. Since a lot of the Obamabots are union thugs and they will be exempt from this bill, they don’t ask questions because they haven’t read it, don’t understand it, and don’t care. When they show up, they are there to make trouble.

Got the guts for THAT champ?
PackerBronco on August 11, 2009 at 11:36 AM
I have a question I’d like asked of any proponent of Obamacare, one that gets to the heart of the whole “you’ll get to keep your own insurance” question.
Right now, I work full time and have good insurance coverage through the business I work for. However, I’m also a novelist, and one day, I’d like to be able to write full time rather than work a day job and try to write at the same time. But I’d have to get individual insurance before I could do that.
According to people who’ve read the legislation, I wouldn’t be able to purchase individual insurance from an insurer because they would no longer be able to offer new contracts once the proposed “health insurance reform” plan goes into action. Which means that I’m pretty much stuck with either continuing my current day job (assuming that my boss continues offering insurance under the new plan) or going with the government plan, right?
How is that anything but a severe limitation of my insurance (and employment) options?

Let me get this straight –
1) He is yet again on the road. My word, he has logged more miles than Charles Kuralt
2) The town hall is in a small New England town.

You never know. Obama might say something stupid again, which he seems to be doing more frequently these days, and the mask might slip even further.

I find it amazing that the MSM has covered very little of this, but people are turning out in droves to protest about health care. Everyone seems to “know” about it and know that their representavtives are lying. It looks to me that most everyone has lost trust in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Seeing the President every day lying on TV no matter what channel you are watching makes you loose trust in the government forever. When you consider the the liars that surround him, this guy is toast. All this in 7-8 months. I have never seen this in my lifetime. I don’t remember things loosing traction this fast in recent past history. Even FDR. Even though the MSM isn’t doing it’s job, the word is out. It is encouraging.

Strange choices of places for meeting people, in states with 1 (MT) , 2 (NH), and 7 (CO) House members, respectively. Wouldn’t most of the “47 million” people without health insurance be in more populous areas, rather than Big Sky country? Or is Obama afraid of meeting a gray-haired angry mob in a big city?

This idiotic, egotistical piece of dog poo is the one who should stop talking. Stop talking moron, go into the White House with your piggie wife and close the door. Don’t come out for the rest of your horrible, disgusting, miserable, nasty term in office. I can’t stand to see or hear this demon. Barack Hussein Obama is the ABSOLUTE WORST thing to ever happen to America, including all wars and 911.
