Why Obama’s town-hall appearances won’t help

posted at 9:30 am on August 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The unexpected furor over the administration’s plans for revamping the nation’s health-care industry has forced Barack Obama to hit the campaign trail again.  Obama plans to visit three town-hall meetings this week in order to lend his star quality to Democrats attempting to sell the plan to a hostile electorate.  Given the President’s history with town-hall forums and the stakes involved, it’s not likely to help him much at all:

President Barack Obama, moving to counter noisy opposition to his health care overhaul proposal, will hold three public town hall meetings this week as his advisers push back against what they describe as false “scare tactics.”

Obama is scheduled to appear on Tuesday in Portsmouth, N.H. at 1 p.m., at an event expected to draw roughly 1,800 participants. His goal this week, advisers said, is to address the concerns of people who already have health care and to illustrate how those people would benefit from adjustments to the current system.

Along the way, Obama will address specific health care topics — none of them new, but each important, advisers said. On Tuesday, he will talk about people who are denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions. On Friday, he will hold a town hall meeting in Bozeman, Mont., to discuss the plight of people dropped from their health insurance plans because of an illness. And at a third session on Saturday, in Grand Junction, Colo., Obama will raise the subject of high out-of-pocket costs, such as co-payments and deductibles.

First, anyone expecting a real town-hall forum to occur with Obama in attendance is deluding themselves.  Even the press — even Helen Thomas — criticized Obama the last time he held a “town-hall meeting” on health care.  Each of these three meetings will carefully screen attendees and get the questions in advance, to minimize embarrassment to Obama.

Beyond that, town-hall meetings won’t solve the problem of national rejection of ObamaCare.  People want insurance reform, but they don’t want a government takeover of the system.  The big problem is the legislation itself.  If Obama wants to fix that, then he needs a meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, not the people of Bozeman and Portsmouth.

The legislators who have to hold town-hall meetings without Obama won’t get to use the Secret Service to screen attendees.  They need to connect to their constituents in order to get re-elected in 2010, and their constituents are angry at an overspending, overreaching federal government that doesn’t know its place.  Even if Obama could be in all of these and screen out the dissenters, they’d still be in the districts — and ready to replace ObamaCare-supporting Representatives next year.

they won’t work because the president has never clarified what he actually wants, leaving the nuts and bolts to the like of Rangel, Pelosi, Waxmen and Dodd, with Max Baucus in fall back position. Additionally his key arguments have been blasted out of the water by various groups. Until he clears things up its just talking points and platitudes that no one believes.

I want him to go to those town halls, we need him at those town halls, he should answer to the American people and have his “plan” put out there in broad daylight.

This debate is past the tipping point. It went over the tipping point 2-3 weeks ago. It is unlikely that there are a group of undecideds or independents on this issue that are waiting to be convinced. The polls are unidirectional–downward…

Please, keep talking Mr. President, continue your efforts to convince us–the ground truth of it is that this omnibus healthcare monstrosity is antithetical to the values and concerns of the American people. No amount of arrogance or speechifying is going to change that….champ.

Obama plans to visit three SEIU town-hall meetings this week…

On Tuesday, he will talk about people who are denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

Recission usually only occurs when those conditions were lied about when application for coverage was made, and then only if discovered within the first few months. To lie about it is fraud, because it effects your rates.

On Friday, he will hold a town hall meeting in Bozeman, Mont., to discuss the plight of people dropped from their health insurance plans because of an illness.

This is usually based on pre-existing conditions that were lied about, as above.

And at a third session on Saturday, in Grand Junction, Colo., Obama will raise the subject of high out-of-pocket costs, such as co-payments and deductibles.

Because he wants market forces completely banished from healthcare decisions.

Will Ogabe tell the town hall attendees to get out of his way? The events won’t work because people are sick and tired of having the POTUS on perpetual campaign.

Come on you clown, your minions control both houses and your pen stands ready to sign, just pass the effin thing if you want it so badly.

Bishop on August 11, 2009 at 9:38 AM

The Obamacare opponents who are going to be kept outside the event in Portsmouth need to make sure they have their video camers (cellphone or otherwise) in place to document what types of “public” actually makes it inside to ask Obama questions (you’d assume the Obama folks won’t be stupid enough to have people outside the building creating a repeat of the SEIU public relations debacle from last Thursday — or deck those going inside the building out in those purple SEIU T-shirts — but you never know, so the camera might come in handy there as well).

What will happen, of course, is that the entire audience will be pre-selected and pre-screened, and largely SEIU porofessional audience members…the Secret Service just cannot cope with hundreds if not thoudsands of “ordinary” citizens showing up and getting inside.

So…an orchestrated dog and pony show for the media is the only result, skewed of course toward Obama, regardless of what Obamateurisms he may unfold.

But, I’d love to see him taken down when he tries to slough off an answer to a serious question or tell a constituent “Well, that is not true” showing no other proof than his word.

The CIC, Cheerleader-in-Chief, is just that, nothing more. He is a community agitator. He is good at stoking populist outrage, and speaking in generalities and ideology. When it comes to specifics, he falls flat, as apparently specifics and details either bore him, he is incapable of grasping them, or his ego leads him to believe that everyone should swoon at his words and blindly follow them.

Obama will just say, “that’s not what I am for”. “What bill is that?. I haven’t endorsed any bill in congress yet.” And he will be speaking the truth.

OT, sort of: did anyone else watch the special last night on ESPN about pitching great Luis Tiant’s return to Cuba? I was nearly out of my mind with outrage while watching that. What those poor people in Cuba have been put through in the name of socialism is heartbreaking and infuriating. They drove for miles through Havana and never saw a grocery store, or a toy store, or a shoe store. Old 1940s cars and even horse-drawn buggies get people around. Obamacare would create a huge bureaucracy that would be staffed with SEIU members (most government workers are SEIU members). SEIU would collect a windfall in new union dues which would be fed back into Democrat politician’s campaign coffers.
It is about a permanent funding mechanism for the Democrat party.

Gee whiz, from reading the comments here you’d think people had lost confidence in the great leader, are suspicious of his intentions, don’t trust that it’s a legitimate opportunity for people to speak their mind, and that the whole thing is a setup and all they’re going to hear is more rhetoric. I agree wholeheartedly!

I hope there are some people who can convincingly pose as Obots to get inside and ask questions.

Nope. Heard on the local NH radio news yesterday morning that the 1,800 will be chosen from invited supporters first.

Semi OT:

Watch Arlen Spectre get grilled in real time:

He just said they would “do everything the can to keep people from stealing” electronic medical files.

Obama’s townhall meetings in one video.

Somebody should ask the dunce why he is conspiring to violate the 10th Amendment, and why he shouldn’t be impeached for it.

Another huge mistake for this dumb president. He has no guts.

Let the Obama Show begin.

It’s not insurance – it’s a health payment plan
gatorboy on August 11, 2009 at 9:58 AM

They now call it “health insurance reform” on occasion.

It’s not insurance because it’s the govt and not bound by any insurance laws. It’s insurance like Social Security is insurance.

Which means they’re guaranteed to be stolen within the first couple of weeks.

Health care is in critical condition because BOOOSH didn’t do anything about it for 8 years.”

Brat on August 11, 2009 at 9:41 AM
That’s insane but typifies the idiocy of the left.

rplat on August 11, 2009 at 9:46 AM

Given Hillary’s meltdown yesterday, maybe 0bama should start blaming her for not getting HillaryCare passed and therefore he could say he “inherited this healthcare mess” from her. Would be a way to get her out as SOS which I believe will happen soon anyway.
