Video: Pakistani Taliban conducted three attacks on nuclear sites in past two years
posted at 4:05 pm on August 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Feeling comfortable about all of those assurances that the Taliban could never get their hands on Pakistan’s nukes? Better not read this Times of India report or their video, which tells a dirty little secret that neither Islamabad or Washington wants anyone to know. The Taliban have conducted three attacks on nuclear sites — and while they haven’t succeeded in getting to nuclear materials, they’ve improved after each attack:
Pakistan’s nuclear facilities have already been attacked at least thrice by its home-grown extremists and terrorists in little reported incidents over the last two years, even as the world remains divided over
the safety and security of the nuclear weapons in the troubled country, according to western analysts. The incidents, tracked by Shaun Gregory, a professor at Bradford University in UK, include an attack on the nuclear missile storage facility at Sargodha on November 1, 2007, an attack on Pakistan’s nuclear airbase at Kamra by a suicide bomber on December 10, 2007, and perhaps most significantly the August 20, 2008 attack when Pakistani Taliban suicide bombers blew up several entry points to one of the armament complexes at the Wah cantonment, considered one of Pakistan’s main nuclear weapons assembly. …
In fact, the attacks have received so little attention that Peter Bergen, the eminent terrorism expert who reviewed Gregory’s paper first published in West Point’s Counter Terrorism Center Sentinel, said “he (Gregory) points out something that was news to me (and shouldn’t have been) which is that a series of attacks on Pakistan’s nuclear weapons facilities have already happened.”
As the Times of India explains, the nuclear facilities in Pakistan are actually more vulnerable to Taliban and al-Qaeda attack — because Pakistan built them in Taliban strongholds. When Islamabad first started developing its nuclear-weapons program, it wanted to keep them safe from attack by India, so they kept them as far away from the Indian border as possible. The Pakistanis wanted the facilities out of the reach of an armored border invasion by India, preferably across the Indus.
Where would that be? Oh, places like Wah, Fatehjang, Golra Sharif, Kahuta, Sihala, Isa Khel Charma, Tarwanah, and Taxila — which all border or are in Taliban territory. Places like the Northwest Frontier Province, one of the places where Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri are thought to securely hide from American wrath.
Still feel secure?

This is nothing but a diversion from the Obamacare cage fight.
Ignore it and get back to the REAL fight.

It is part of the new government run health care plan to utilize cheaply provided foreign radiation to provide preventative radiation treatment to potential cancer patients.

What could go wrong?

I am thankful that I live far away from any population center. I feel sorry for Israel and all of you that live in major cities. Of course, the fallout could be carried on the wind anywhere. Where is Glenn Beck’s bunker?

Terrorists will eventually get a nuke, I feel pretty sure.
The election of Obama to the WH will probably make nukes in the hands of MORE likely not LESS. His very first budget cut how many billions in defense spending? 90? I forget. He has 3 more to go.
And when you think of it….few voters really get riled up about defense spending…it pretty hard to get your head around it if you are an average voter. Obama has run up the national defecit so far, that it would take another stike on American soil to politically justify increasing defense spending one penny when “millions are out of work” and inflation starts rearing it’s ugly head.

Nothing since August 2008?
califdreamnred on August 11, 2009 at 4:34 PM
So the Taliban knows where Pakistan keeps their nukes, but the DOD doesn’t?
Skandia Recluse on August 11, 2009 at 4:35 PM
A large part of that would be due to the libtard loons who have indoctrinated children about the “military-industrial complex”, and the need to slash our armed forces to a Carter-level shadow army or beyond.
Supposedly, such an action is somehow supposed to help balance the budget and restore peace. It will, of course, do neither. The money saved will be squandered, and our enemies at home and abroad are very quick to spot paper tigers.

On the flip side I may never know what hit me.

But for a non-personal anecdote….they invaded Afganistan and Iraq in humvees that had hand-bolted 1/4″ plate steel on the doors and old flack jackets from ‘nam as improvised armor (if you were lucky). And that was just residual damage from the spending cuts under clinton.

Considering that these attacks all happened while Bush was president, that’s quite a statement.
Also, back in the 2004 election it was Kerry, not Bush, who was far more interested in chasing down loose nukes.
We’d have been able to focus more on securing nuclear sites in unstable regions – including directing more funds towards it – if we hadnt invaded Iraq, a country that had no nukes and was absolutely no threat to us. Obama knew that back in 2003. Bush, who had been president for many years when these Taliban attacks occurred, was the one who got us in this spot.

Just think how much money we can save on healthcare if a couple of hundred million of us are wiped out.
Now we can afford healthcare for all. All that is left.

If it makes you feel any better, and it shouldn’t, probably half the soldiers guarding these sensitive facilities have deep tribal and religious sympathies for the Taliban. So one day, a group of Taliban will likely walk in and take some nukes after a staged ‘shootout’ for world consumption.
Have a nice day.

Oh please….what was Obama doing in 2003? Illinois state senator. Yea he had the lowdown on all that ME intel. He was a Liberal, talking to fellow liberals, he would have opposed ANYTHING Bush put foth as a plan, so don’t try and tell me he was somehow pre-cognizant of the lack of WMD’s. Every single Democrat leader in washington voted to give Bush the power to invade Iraq. I am am sick of people trying to claim otherwise.
What is more damning about the timing of those attacks?
The fact that they happened while Bush was president?
Or the fact that it was an election clycle and we are only just now hearing about it from the MSM just when Obama needs some cover to possibly send MORE troops to Afganistan?
Obama is now the President, and I assume that you helped him become so. Obama is the one who has to have a plan to deal with this, right now, today, not in 2003, not in 2006, 2007, 2008. Obama wanted the job, and he got it. I think he’s having a hard time matching rhetoric to reality. What do you think?

I say we take off, and nuke the entire site from orbit.

Talibani with nukes. What could go wrong?
sonofdy on August 11, 2009 at 5:46 PM
So the big thing you got out of this was the attacks happened while Bush was president.
Whoppde f#$king do.
You seemed to miss the part about a group that endorses suicide attacks and has attacked the usa before through thier aid to al qeada is trying to get nukes.
If NYC or LA disappears in a fire ball will your first talking point be something about Bush???

And they never got inside the outer wire.
The men who are responsible for Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal are doing their job.
Seems they are serious in not allowing access to these facilities.
For how long?
That’s the question that hangs in the air.
