Specter: “I don’t have any requirement to be here”

posted at 12:15 pm on August 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Things got a little heated at the townhall forum held by Senator Arlen Specter (R er, D-PA) this morning after a curious decision not to allow people to ask questions live from the floor.  One constituent had to initially be restrained when he found out that he couldn’t ask a live question, but Specter handled the incident well by giving the man his say — and admitting that his office needed to do better in adopting a process that allowed for live interaction in his meetings.  He then angered the crowd all over again by reminding them how lucky they are to be in his presence at all, as this video clip by The College Politico shows at the end:

SPECTER: I’m encouraging constitutional rights.  I’m encouraging constitutional rights by coming to Lebanon to talk to my constituents.  I could be somewhere else.  I don’t get any extra pay — I don’t have any requirement to be here.  But for somebody –

CROWD: [Angry murmuring] You work for us! You report to us!

SPECTER: Okay, okay, number — well, I am reporting to you …

Putting aside the risible notion that holding townhalls are required for “encouraging constitutional rights,” lecturing Pennsylvanians on their good fortune to have an audience with their lordly Senator seems to be right in line with the Democratic approach to democracy these days.  Specter doesn’t get any “extra pay”?  He makes $174,000 a year for a job that requires him to be at the office four days a week when Congress is in session, which is only about 2/3rds of the year.  He has a gold-plated medical and dental package that Specter certainly won’t surrender for the ObamaCare system he’s pushing.  Thanks to his 30 years in the Senate, he’s eligible for a pension that will pay 80% of that salary and keep his benefits package in place until he dies.

How many of his constituents have that kind of job?  How many do you think will be impressed that Specter deigned to receive his subjects without getting a bonus payment to do it?  What a great example of Beltway arrogance — and what a great opportunity for Pat Toomey.

If the GOP had any smarts they’d be outraged and would have been running ads for the past week. Where’s the outrage at our citizens being called un-American, swastika toting any Klan like mobs? If they can’t come up with a response to show how delusional and arrogant these representatives are then they’re just as pathetic as they are.

scalleywag on August 11, 2009

The GOP wants the same level of power over our lives that the Democrats are trying to seize. They just want to get there a bit more incrementally. When you look at the level of spending and federal power-grabbing that they have voted for, can you really dispute this? Like I said, R’s and D’s are on parallel tracks riding trains of different speeds. The goals are the same.
The number of identifiable conservatives in the GOP is fairly small and has been dwindling for some time. Our charge is to find the small government, fiscally prudent conservatives and support them and only them. Opting for the lesser of two evils got us where we are today.

You can’t fight human nature. The vast majority of voters are lazy, and will always be lazy. It takes a lot of work to keep yourself educated. Work that many people would rather spend on family or hobbies. Especially given the extremely tiny chance that your one vote will be the one that decides the election.

Any system that can only be operated by informed voters, is one that is doomed to failure.

I gotta say, the month of August has turned into a “teachable moment.” Each and every one of these town halls show just how corrupted and corruptive Congress can be for the political class. We have John Conyers bragging that he doesn’t read the legislation he votes for, you’ve got fellow Michigander Dingell comparing dissent with the KKK while Pelosi/Hoyer calls such actions un-American. The Democrats have been convincing the common working stiff that they are the voice and only protection against the evil Republicans, who will take away their benefits and steal their tax money to get richer. In fact, the cat is partially out of the bag. Could it be that the working stiffs are getting a whiff of the fact that they have been getting table crumbs?

If there is a collective epiphany of what the Democratic party has become, these outbursts will seem like a small ripple next to the wave of fury that will come from the working class, who hands over thirty to fifty percent of their hard earned wages to these royals. I’m a working stiff, and I want to see them impeached.

Democrats are not trusted on this issue. Winning an election does not give a politician free license to do whatever the hell it is they feel like, it is not a coronation.

NoDonkey on August 11, 2009 at 1:00 PM

ROCnPhilly on August 11, 2009 at 1:00 PM

The glitch in Specter’s show was when the woman asked him why there was end-of-life-counseling in section 1233 of the bill.

On script, Specter called her a liar — the bill means nothing of the sort — and went on to the next question.

This has been really frustrating to watch. God love you questioners at the Town Halls, and you commenters at pro-life blogs, etc., but you have to force the issue using Obama’s authority, they recognize no other authority, so if you invoke Obama, they can’t dismiss you.

Tell them President Obama has himself interpreted section 1233 to mean that “maybe an old person shouldn’t get the pacemaker, but should just get the pills” which means pain management rather than surgery.

The President himself has told us this is a death clause. These congress people have to choose, are they for or against the health care bill as President Obama himself has interpreted it in his public statements.

Yes or no.

jeff_from_mpls on August 11, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Yeah the voters were heard. When they voted in the election last year!

They were also heard in 2000,2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, etc.

They’re heard every two years for the House, six for the Senate and four for the Presidency.

The liberals didn’t stop protesting Bush just because he won re-election, did they, or from 2000-2004?
Nope. They got louder, more hysterical, more angry, and they kept protesting. BUT BUT BUT BUSH WON, after all. Didn’t you get the memo that you were supposed to shut the hell up all those years and never open your mouth again until you won a Presidential election? Didn’t the vote shut you all up?

IT DIDN’T?

Unless I was living in a coma from 2004-2008? We’re lucky that one’s right to yell at their elected representatives doesn’t hinge on majoritarian rule. That’s why there’s a First Amendment in place – we see how fast the minority would be denied the right to speak in 2009 if they weren’t Obamacrats, don’t we?

Maybe “shutting people up” is not what a vote is intended to do.

Food for thought.

Good Lt on August 11, 2009 at 1:01 PM

I’ve got to agree. People voted for change. But there were lazy and impatient and thought that Lord Obama was change that they could believe in. With the help of the Soros run media they missed that Obama was about a change to government control everything.

Senator Spector, there is more to the Consitution than the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. No, you are…….95% of blacks voted for this waste of skin, don’t have to pay my mortgage, gas, I help obama and he will help me…..remember that lady?

One day this man will wind up wearing a trench coat and exposing himself to old ladys.

First off, if you are going to insult somebody by calling them stupid, it might be helpful to understand the difference between “your” and the contraction you are.

For the record, the filthy liar in the White House did indeed get elected, in part, because he is multi-racial but as far as I’m concerned he’s never been likeable. His racist overtones are very unpleasant.

Finally, the filthy liar in the White House campaigned on many issues, including transparency in his administration and a ban on hiring lobbyists. He also campaigned on being post-partisan. To date his corrupt administration has been secretive to the point they are now soliciting citizen spies to report on their neighbors, dozens of top appointments by lobbyists, and a myriad of ways the rat bastard traitor has betrayed his campaign promises.

Yes, just the way that all people who disagree with your Lord and Master are all “nazis/racists/bigots/hatemongers/homophobes/extremists/terrorists/(fill in hyperbolic insult here).

Whatsa matter? Can’t take the tactics your side dishes out?

Good Lt on August 11, 2009 at 1:07 PM

Yeah the voters were heard. When they voted in the election last year! People voted for this.

No they didn’t, you blithering idiot. They stupidly voted for an affirmative action Precedent who the neo-Pravda media played as someone with a brain. It took most people having to see the insanity and intense hatred of America that exudes from The Precedent to understand how badly they screwed up.

All Obama talked about during the campaign was healthcare reform. jeez
Terry Silver on August 11, 2009 at 12:53 PM

Hardly. The Precedent talked about nothing specific. He was nothing but “Hope and Change” and sold by the neo-Pravda media and other morons who were awestruck by his affirmative action credentials (as he had nothing else).

Now, America is realizing that they signed their own national suicide note on Nov 4, and America-haters like you are cheering on the death of the greatest nation to have ever existed.

So, which campaign issue that caused you to vote for him hasn’t he abrogated?

Close GITMO?, air raiding villages, out of Iraq, ending “torture” etc?

The list of things he screwed YOU on is as long as his list of promises. He hasn’t screwed me….I knew then what he is was all about. You are learning the hard way.

It sucks to be wrong….doesn’t it?

Only 2/3rds of it.

Most people who vote for Democrats are either sorryass losers looking for a handout or people so damn rich that the idiot policies Democrats promote can’t possibly hurt them personally.

Specter: “I don’t have any requirement to be here”

My senator is a joke. Thankfully, I don’t have any requirement to vote for him. 2010 hurry up!!

jtownsley on August 11, 2009 at 1:10 PM

THe problem is this is Pennsylvania. It’s already been proved that a politician can call his constituents ignorant and hicks, and they’ll STILL vote him in. So what’s the point.

Jeff from WI on August 11, 2009 at 1:10 PM

Wow.

Gotta give Specter credit- he was adroit and managed the situation out of a total disaster.

It’s not the House of Lords, Arlen.

Terry wasn’t wrong. He voted for the death of America and he is very happy with how The Precedent is driving this nation to ruin. Terry is loving this. He hopes this nation burns to the ground.

progressoverpeace on August 11, 2009 at 1:12 PM

Memory lane time:

Liberals “shutting up” when Bush was inaugurated after winning a decisive re-election in 2005.

Seems like the vote in the 2004 election didn’t give the moonbats their “message.” No swaztikas or hysterics here. Just “patriotism” and “dissent.”

Ah, remember the good old days when the left thought protesting public officials – no matter what was said – was the highest form of patriotism?

How about the guy hoping there it doesn’t come to a violent revolution but is nonetheless afraid that he just might be forced to join one if it started?

Now, obviously, that video was racist.

Good Lt on August 11, 2009 at 1:12 PM

According to Rush, a woman was reading directly from the bill, and Specter denied that it was true. Reading directly from the bill, but nobody should believe it???? Huh?

How exciting is it now that Specter is a democrat? Blast away!

He doesn’t preside in any manner over me, or any American – since you are not an American, you clearly don’t understand this.

He presides over the executive branch only. Not the people.
