Protester to Specter: “You have awakened a sleeping giant”

posted at 6:20 pm on August 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Grade A red meat, straight off the bone. All protesters want to believe this is true of their pet cause, of course. The left surely believed it after the anti-war movement got going and yet here we are, six years later, still with 130,000 troops in Iraq … and, er, with an anti-war Democratic president and Congress at the helm. Will the right’s “sleeping giant” fully awaken before 2012 or are we doomed to a few more years of hitting the snooze button before the backlash hits full force? Famously eeyorish blogger predicts: Zzzzzz.

Give The One credit for doing his part to nudge us, though. According to Gallup, only 35 percent would advise their congressman to vote for ObamaCare versus 36 percent who’d advise voting against. In one month, that’s a drop of … 21 points.

Update: “It scares the life out of me.”

Liberal343,

Does your mommy go to her night job right about this time of day leaving you to fend for yourself, and with no other outlet for your disappointment in your life than being obnoxiously petulant on the internet? Just wondering. It’s how I picture you, anyway. Have a good night!

“She” is “me” and she is right – there are many people who have been awakened.

Now, can someone tell me where the line forms for the Obama mandate “Advance Death Care Planning” session? I thought I’d get a jump on the crowds since time is a tickin’ and I don’t want to miss my death care appointment.

Oh, and at the Lewisburg meeting it was mentioned that Obama is expanding executive power by hiring a lot of czars. Specter responded by saying he hasn’t hired more than a few. The crowd shot back with the exact number (in the 40s). Specter than said “I’ll count the czars and get back to you”. I didn’t get it on camera but I’m sure others did.

HornetSting on August 11, 2009 at 7:32 PM

I’ve said before these folks have two constituencies. There’s the voters, and there’s the controllers of the party money.

More often than not, the latter matters more than the former.

And I’m sure right now they’re fielding lots of calls from Rahm’s buddies with the checkbooks, and they’re having to evaluate the reliability of the X-dollars-buys-Y-votes equation they’ve been able to rely on, in Specter’s case, since dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Specter’s probably in a worse position than most, because there’s enough Dems who don’t trust him much to knock him off in the primary if he shows hints of waffling.

So his only hope is to be purest blue right now, and pray that the Dem party machine can buy him his seat back come the general election.

And the rest of us can hope it doesn’t work.

Geochelone on August 11, 2009 at 8:27 PM

I don’t care how much people didn’t like McCain. We should have been out there just as much. Too bad people weren’t enthused. They should have been. We knew what Obama was going to do. The writing was on the wall.

blatantblue on August 11, 2009 at 6:55 PM

It was up to John McCain to make his case and generate enthusiasm for himself, as titular head of the party. He ran the campaign as he wanted…I blame John McCain. The American people can only do so much, when you have a candidate that is really a Democrat.

luvstotango on August 11, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Another reason why members of Congress should be required to road test Obamacare on their own, first.

A heck of a lot of them could use some end-of-life counseling. /s

I’m too cynical I guess. I think this thing is going to pass, and in fact the way Dear Leader and his Comrades have been acting leads me to think that they know they have the votes.

“Sleeping giant”? Hmm. Yeah, they want the “sleeping giant” to try something.

Dr. ZhivBlago on August 11, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Specter’s reply to the young lady was all the evidence you need to prove that when one spends too much time in DC, they lose touch with the reality of life.

Vashta.Nerada on August 11, 2009 at 10:00 PM

Will the right’s “sleeping giant” fully awaken before 2012 or are we doomed to a few more years of hitting the snooze button before the backlash hits full force? Famously eeyorish blogger predicts: Zzzzzz.

At the moment I would say the Giant is half waking up which will at current levels result in many a sleepless night for Democrat representatives, Senators, and strategists in the lead up the the 2010 midterm elections.

However if the Democrats and Obama manage to force through the Health Care reforms that they are pushing for or worse yet they use the nuclear option of reconciliation to ram it through, not only will the Giant fully wake up but it will go on a electoral rampage in 2010 and 2012 and will decimate anyone who is seen as having been even remotely supportive of the Democrats health care reform plans.

Mark my words if Obama and his sycophantic lackeys in the media think that the people exercising their first amendment rights at these town hall meetings are an angry mob now, I can pretty much guarantee that if he uses the nuclear option to pass his health care bill the media wont be referring to the peoples response as that of an angry mob but rather that of a lynch mob.

Hellrider on August 11, 2009 at 10:10 PM

Famously eeyorish blogger predicts: Zzzzzz.

Should have made that prediction in 2008. I think we are over the top. The silent majority is not feeling so silent. Everyone I know is talking politics now, and you should see their faces when I toss the “un-American” and “KKK” comments from members of Congress their way. I should really have a camera ready when I tell them about the government having access to their bank accounts to pay for universal healthcare, it’s priceless.

We’ve seen somewhat this level of dissent before, from Code Pink for example. But Code Pink had to travel to have their voices heard. Now those in Congress are traveling to hear those voices. Big difference.

Suprise!!! Obama is bringing most of us togather. Against his socialist (whoops, the new “N” word, almost slipped up) Marxist agenda.

I’m prone to agree with luvs…
McCain is what the Democrats used to be; Obama is the end result of 60′s thinking, well funded political activism, sympathetic left leaning media and indoctrination from Kindergarten to the University level. What we NEED is a Republican who can look back in History to the pre-Teddy Roosevelt Republican Party’s ideals and work to return to those.

Red State State of Mind on August 11, 2009 at 10:38 PM

These folks can say whatever they want in these town halls. It’s really nothing but a bunch of Hot Air.
What matters is what’s in the bill. What does it say? Does it leave room for the things to happen that have been alleged?

Look at the past. What has been done by the Govt when they have some wiggle room?

This is 1000 pages of S***! Give me five bills and 10 pages and we can fix the few problems in our system.

Was the problem that McCain had been pissing in the Social Conservative (a.k.a. Religious Right) swimming pool, or was the problem that Sarah Palin scared the moderate-right?

Both, but the former mattered more than the latter – the Religious Right know they’ll get through this, while the moderate-right were all voting for Obama anyway. Way cooler than “that republican fossil they dug up in the arizona desert”, etc. etc.

This is the problem with letting the gutless turds of the D.C. wing run the Republican party…. they only nominate other gutless wonders.
