Obama: Government health care will be like, um, the post office

posted at 3:29 pm on August 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Well, now I’m sold. If only he’d sweetened the pot and promised us it’d be like the DMV, I’d be ready to don an SEIU shirt and beat some protesters myself. As for the substance of his claim, that having government competition won’t affect private insurers, make sure to read Karl’s post debunking the many, many lies The One has told us about ObamaCare thus far. In fact, he told another one at this very same town hall, but I’ll make you go to Breitbart to watch the clip of that.

Evidently he faced a tough crowd, replete with 13-year-old girls empathizing about all the “mean signs” the Democrats have had to look at lately. Yes, really.

Leader of the Free World.

Akzed on August 11, 2009 at 4:30 PM

*Shudder*
Though I think I could live with repeated verbal missteps, if he wasn’t so busy browbeating our allies (Honduras) and kissing up to our enemies (Iran, N. Korea, etc.).
Well, if we restrict things to the topic of “leader of the Free World”, that is.

Count to 10 on August 11, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Obama simply cannot credibly walk-back single-payer. His current claim about “if I could start over from scratch” is disengenious, especially since his expressed intent is (or was a couple weeks ago) to “remake the foundation” of the health care “system.” His new foundation is accomplished by federal regulation and control. His policies are one big transition rule leading to top-down statism. (See also cap and trade.) He knows NOTHING and cares LESS about free markets, growth and liberty.

DrW on August 11, 2009 at 4:36 PM

Knowing liberals and their penchant for destroying things, they’ll be Soy burgers. Soy is an absolute evil, turns men girly. One of the few foods that should be outlawed.

The diet the Liberals wanna put all Americans on is unhealthier than what we currently eat. The Paleodiet with half of it being meat, is the healthiest diet out there.

Soy contains phytoestrogens which promote breast cancer growth, blocks testosterone and is known to lower sperm count.

Tofu is not much better.

What’s this stupidity about “if the insurance companies aren’t providing a good deal…”? If they don’t provide a good deal, consumers leave. This would be more true (much, much more true) if coverage was decoupled from employment and artificial barriers were removed.

Obama starts in the clip talking about the government plan being self-sustaining; but his proposal is not self sustaining. It would only be self-sustaining if:

1. It was COMPLETELY funded by premiums collected from its participants. In other words, it can’t be funded by the taxpayers or by money taken from the general fund. The ONLY people who pay for it are the people who are enrolled.
2. It CAN’T run at a deficit. It has to break even every year. If it loses money it either has to raise its premiums or go out of business. NO OTHER OPTION.

That’s what self-sustaining REALLY means you d***a***. And that is NOT what you’re proposing.

1. It was COMPLETELY funded by premiums collected from its participants. In other words, it can’t be funded by the taxpayers or by money taken from the general fund. The ONLY people who pay for it are the people who are enrolled.

If that were true: Congress would not be looking for a way to pay for Obamacare, the lower class would not be getting it free, you would be free to move to another insurance company if you chose, there would be no penalty for not having health insurance or as at least one or more bill states, be accessed a surcharge (non debatable) if you did not have it, or be accessed a surcharge if you had private insurance instesd of Obamacare.

He thinks that scales to a national level.

And it did, for a brief moment in time.

But somehow it doesn’t play too well among middle-class whites who work and pay taxes and like their healthcare just as it is.

I really think that the “stupid cops” comment was his crossing of the Rubicon.

The post office loses money even while it is guaranteed a monopoly on regular mail. FedEx and UPS make a profit even when competing against each other and the post office on overnight mail. Obama does not know this because he is ignorant of the business world, among other things.

Obama lives in some parallel universe where up is down, left is right and the only thing that should matter to the masses is his distorted sense of reality. I would venture to say that he has no idea what is in the legislation or what its true implications would be. This town hall meeting was a stacked and staged affair just as all of his political rallies have been.

rplat on August 11, 2009 at 5:35 PM

One of the most fascinating and least discussed aspects of the House legislation is the ability that trail attorneys are given to sue, on behalf of the government, ‘entities’ who negatively impact public health.

So not only does the current plan not include tort reform or any mechanism to reduce runaway liability costs to the medical profession, it acutally increases and expands liability on the private sector as a whole.

Imagine for a moment a class action lawsuit, filed on behalf of the government, against Wendy’s hamburger. The case: selling red meat causes obesity and heart disease in a significant portion of the public.

Get ready for tofu burgers folks. This is a slippery slope.

For instance, I know some folks who think this is free health care. When I asked them who will pay for it? They just blink. They honestly think they will get some card or something and use it to access all kinds of care without having to pay for it. I mentioned to a couple of people that there was actually talk of mandatory health insurance. Have to love watching old movies where the mail is delivered twice a day… weekends… ahhhh… yes the government does such a good job at delivering the mail. 50 years ago.

Now, even on weekdays, you get in line for the limited hours one mail worker is actually able to process the line of people waiting to mail packages and do other business that the USPO does. And the line just creeps along…

Under Obamacare I’m sure we will have specially made, souvenier sutures and packets of aspirin with lovely designs on the outside to try and bolster the system. Collectors everywhere will rejoice when the new double eagle gauze bandages are released to the general public! With the special edition medical tape, all for the low price of $20 per set. Of course when they get the wrong blood type when you get surgery, which is delayed while you’re under and then they do a heart transplant instead of that hip replacement (but make sure the tonsils stay in even if they are rotting) we will have the lovely bureaucratic equivalent of finding the fragile items you wanted by USPS were accidentally shipped to Timbuktu and then used for soccer practice in New Jersey… and when you try to claim the insurance they will say it wasn’t their fault for the bad packaging…

Yes I can imagine that!

As for the VA: all Congresscritters should be on the VA plan and all veterans should have the level of care that Congresscritters get today as they sacrificed for this Nation and deserve our honor and support. Our Congresscritters? Not so much.

I got this from my socalled Blue Dog, the coward, the one who refused to have open townhalls, Brad Ellsworth:

Thank you for contacting me to voice your concern about health care reform. I appreciate your comments, and I welcome this opportunity to share my thoughts.

While the medical care provided by American doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals is the envy of the world, too often the skyrocketing cost of health insurance stands between working Americans and the care they need. In fact, over the past decade, the cost of an average family health plan has more than doubled, leaving many American families under-insured and others with no health insurance of any kind. Federal and state programs like Medicare and Medicaid provide access to health coverage for seniors and other groups, but they can’t begin to address the growing need for help. That means tens of millions of struggling middle class Americans are being forced to live in constant fear of losing their home or going bankrupt if a family member gets sick. As these Americans delay essential care and try to get by without necessary medications, they get increasingly unhealthy-increasing the costs for everyone in the end.

As you may know, health care costs for employers have also skyrocketed since 2000, forcing many small businesses to shift the growing cost of their insurance programs to their employees or eliminating their health plans altogether. Even after shifting away some of these increased costs, American businesses are forced to spend more per hour on health care than their competitors in other advanced countries-making American products and services less competitive. That’s one reason why America’s 27 million small business owners cite rising health insurance costs as their number one concern-above fuel costs, taxes, and the economy.

Under the status quo, these problems are getting worse instead of better. Since the beginning of the current recession in late 2007, an additional 2.4 million workers and their families have lost health coverage due to layoffs and benefit cuts. Meanwhile, 87 million Americans were without health insurance for all or part of 2007 or 2008. When these uninsured Americans end up in emergency clinics and the hospital, everyone’s costs go up. In fact, family health insurance premiums cost $1,100 more per year just to compensate for care provided to folks without health care coverage.

That’s why Congress is focused on solving the problem and making the changes necessary to ensure the system works. Leaders in the House and Senate have proposed several major bills, which have been progressing through the legislative process since early June. The health reform bill introduced in the House, H.R. 3200, has been debated and amended by three Congressional committees. I was proud of my fellow fiscally-conservative Blue Dog Democrats on the Energy & Commerce Committee who negotiated a number of positive changes in the House bill in late July. As you know, this bill will likely come before the House for discussion in the fall, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to improve the final product throughout the process.

As Congress works toward the goal of passing comprehensive health care reform, I will judge every amendment and bill on how they address the most important problems I have heard from constituents. A real health reform bill must reduce long-term health care costs for families, businesses, and government, increase choices for consumers, improve access for the uninsured and underinsured, address the unique challenges faced by rural patients and providers, and accomplish all of these things in a fiscally sustainable manner.

Of course, I will also base my vote on the facts of the bill coming to the floor, rather than misinformation and scare tactics by the media or outside groups. Sadly, some have alleged a laundry list of problems with the reform bill in the House that simply aren’t backed up by the facts. They must assume individuals would not take the time to examine the text of the bill themselves to verify the accusations. For example, organizations have claimed the bill would require doctors to euthanize their patients or deny them care they ask for, which is of course false. While the bill does not encourage euthanasia, it does provide seniors enrolled in Medicare with a new benefit allowing them to sit down with their doctor of choice to discuss the type of care they would like to receive in case of a medical emergency. In the past, many seniors have been unable to get their doctors’ expert opinion when making these decisions because no reimbursement was available for the often time-consuming discussion. With this provision, seniors would now have access to their doctors’ thoughts on the care they might want based on their unique health situation, which can provide peace of mind. I would encourage you to scrutinize what you might hear about health reform-good or bad-and find the facts on your own. There’s a couple of independent websites which help to separate the myths and the facts: http://www.factcheck.org and http://www.politifact.com.

This is an important moment for our country. We cannot afford to leave this problem unaddressed, and I will continue to work toward enacting health reform that brings costs down for everyone, rewards health care providers based on quality not on quantity, and ensures every American has access to health insurance. Of course, this is an especially important and complex issue, and it affects every family and business. That’s why I would encourage you to stay in touch with your comments and concerns as this effort progresses.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your views with me. If you have not yet had an opportunity to fill out my online health care survey, you can find it at my Online Office at http://www.ellsworth.house.gov.

Sincerely,

Brad Ellsworth

Post Office??

Obama hasn’t use the post office since his student days, writing home for more money.

In his adult years, probably not at all. Not like Obama to put anything, anything, ever, in writing.
