More Obama: My plan might stop doctors from cutting off your foot

posted at 10:14 pm on August 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Townhall’s trying to turn this into a sequel to the now-legendary tonsils soundbite from his presser a few weeks ago. I don’t think it’s that bad — he’s not accusing doctors of trying to cash in on unnecessary amputations, merely emphasizing that we need to create better incentives to address medical problems early — but it is weird that this guy keeps coming back to amputated body parts when talking about this. The two goals of ObamaCare as I understand it are making sure everyone has access to treatment generally and (giggle) reducing overall federal health-care spending. I didn’t realize there was an epidemic of people losing appendages that’s driving the urgency, but there you have it.

Oh, and as for his hosannas about preventative care: You know the drill by now.

Abortionists who accidentally deliver live babies and let them die on stainless steel shelves are heroes.

Yeah – Obama’s a stand up guy.

Candy Slice on August 11, 2009 at 11:34 PM

I (unfortunately) live in Illinois. Most of the time, Barry voted “present”… the few times that he managed to rouse himself to take a position was when he was voting to leave babies to die in linen closets. (He voted on that issue more than once, I might add….)

I don’t normally quote Rush but he had one really great point yesterday. Obama keeps saying “My Plan does this.” “My plan won’t do that.” He has no plan. House 3200 is not his, it’s Waxman’s. There’s four plans in the Senate. Obama hasn’t put forward any plan of his design. When will someone besides Rush Limbaugh mention this fact.

coldwarrior on August 12, 2009 at 12:47 AM

When Obama practices medicine, people are sure to die. What the hell does he think? That people with diabetes are not already taught about the effects of the disease and how to take care of themselves? Does he believe the rainbows shooting out of his a$$ will prevent diabetic neuropathy?

Jeesh! This guy is such an idiot. If anyone else said an iota of the nonsense he spews, the press would be all over him.

Blake on August 12, 2009 at 12:54 AM

He’s wrong, too. The doctor treating you is not the surgeon. And amputations are not fancy operations — they just saw it off. So, surgeons don’t make a lot of money off them, either.

I hate this guy.

I am amazed how the Democrats have totally miscalculated America. The American soul we have long known is still alive and kicking, it is not dead yet. People are outraged at what is going on and the Democrats are not listening.

This is because of Astroturfing. It has blurred the lines between real honest to god grassroots Dissent and manufacutred outrage. Unless something changes, it may very well get worse.

Obama, with his victory and his support, could do some real good instead of wasting it away for Democrat special interests and ideology. Imagine if he, from the very beginning, announced it was his intention to create the free-market environment that freed people from government reliance? Imagine if he sought to install social programs whose intent was to teach people how to be self-sufficient (these sort of programs are absent). He could go down within the Top 10 Presidents of all time at the very least. Ironically, this would be Hope and Change.

Instead, we see Obama and his Administration for what he is. Ivory tower individuals raised, educated and schooled in an echo chamber singing to the Liberal Choir without dissenting opinion to be heard. And then ran a campaign where Speeches, soundbytes, presentation and spin mattered more than Policy, Ideas and Truth. A campaign that did not end in November but continues to this day. Hope and Change to them means a continuation of the last 70+ years of Democrat government. Who would’ve known, Hope and Change means More of the Same.

What we see here is not a Presidency in touch with the people because they have fooled themselves all these years. What we see instead is a disaster of miscalculation, self-delusion, grandiose thinking not in touch with reality and too much HOPE.

They’re not being treated as effectively as they could be?

Whose damned fault is that?

The PATIENT’S!

What this a**hole doesn’t have any clue about is COMPLIANCE.

EVERYONE knows how to treat diabetes to the extent it is controllable. Obamacare is NOT going to make patient more compliant than they are now.

And we’re taking off legs because we make more money????

Barack Obama is a goddam…. I can’t even find the words to express my contempt….

drjohn on August 12, 2009 at 7:10 AM

One more little detail for President Dickhead- the guy who treats diabetes is not the same guy who amputates. It does the internist no financial good to have a patient’s limb amputated.

drjohn on August 12, 2009 at 7:15 AM

There is no financial benefit to the internist to have a patient’s limb amputated.

Barack Obama is demonizing physicians and it is cretinous.

It is a miserable day for this country when a US President can lie so baldly to the country and absolutely NO ONE calls him on it.

drjohn on August 12, 2009 at 7:25 AM

What Obama needs to realize is that diabetics need to help their own cause. My wife is in the medical field, and works with many diabetic patients. Her biggest frustration is with patients that fail to take medications on a regular basis, and ignore diet and lifestyle instructions. Diabetes is a major problem, and one that the medical field has committed huge resources towards, but those resources are in vain without the cooperation of the patients.

Yes, but that’s not the problem. The problem is that Obama clearly believes that there are significant cost savings to be had in our existing system because doctors are doing unnecessary surgery on patients, either because they want the money or because they didn’t prevent the problem from developing ahead of time. There is some of that, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what we spend on health care. And if Obama the dope thinks he’s going to cut out enough of this to help fund his socialized boondoggle of a health plan he’s even stupider and more delusional than I thought he was.

hawksruleva on August 12, 2009 at 8:20 AM

What a flaming idiot! The primary care physician makes NOTHING on an amputation, that the surgeon’s rice bowl. A primary care physician today LOSES income in this event, because it all then gets turned over to specialists. The primary care physician makes his ‘pittance’ only as long as the patient is stable(since Obama hasn’t paid for his own healthcare for a very long time, he doesn’t know how large that ‘pittance’ really is).

Even his attempts at painting doctors as money-grubbing vultures can’t follow any sort of logic thread, even based on his massively false assumptions.

Leading cause of death in America: heart disease. Leading cause of heart disease: unhealthy lifestyle. The quickest way to reduce healthcare spending in America would be for us to get off our lazy bums and exercise 30 minutes a day and quit eating so much junk. Of course, this is based on the idea of personal responsibility, which is like venom to the left. Personally, if you want to eat, drink and smoke yourself to death, then I won’t stop you. But please don’t ask me to pay your doctor bill. Surely most people know ObamaCare is really about PeopleControl.

j_galt on August 12, 2009 at 9:22 AM

he’s not accusing doctors of trying to cash in on unnecessary amputations, merely emphasizing that we need to create better incentives to address medical problems early

Yeah right, like the tonsils comment eh? Just another act in the magical demonization tour.

The PCPs promoting prevention (or pushing the pill for the inflamed tonsils) are different from the surgeons chopping off various body parts for profit. How the PCPs benefit just isn’t clear at all. But does seem to be another bit of evidence that no one in the District seems to be encumbered by the thought process.

gonegaltinstl on August 12, 2009 at 9:26 AM

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I guess from all the medical professionals here on dumbAir believe preventive medicine should not be stressed. Once again in your effort to make one person seem stupid it only shows you as the stupid ones.

Nope this is just like his tonsil gaffe. The implication is the same: demonize those who make the most money.

Surgeons can you hear me?? You’re a target.

xax on August 12, 2009 at 9:28 AM

Hi, and thanks for letting me on board. I watched the video clip three times. In fact, I may be the only one to thinks so, but I did get the impression – as with the prior tonsils reference – that Obama was once again saying that doctors actually choose amputations over lesser paying preventative care. I think the reason it sounds likes he’s ‘not serious,’ is because we – the viewers – just cannot believe Obama would believe that physicians actually perform amputations to increase payment rather choosing to perform less lucrative preventative care. It’s just ‘too crass’ to believe a president actually thinks that way. But I, for one, believe he meant it as a real example.

Jim Anderson on August 12, 2009 at 9:30 AM

I am a surgeon that specializes in Diabetics. I am offended.
20 years ago, you got paid well for surgery. (not that well).
Now everytime I work in the OR instead of my office I LOSE money. I work very hard to save the legs of diabetics and usually do. If a leg gets amputated, we get paid about $600 and that includes three months of free post op care. Just shows how ignorant and out of touch Obama is.

Redglen on August 12, 2009 at 9:31 AM

As the daughter of a physician, I am getting more and more disgusted watching the President of the United States demonizing doctors. Doctors are not the reason our health care costs are out of control! Too much government and too much litigation are the reasons! Doctors just want to be left alone to do their jobs, which they do damn well in this country.

rockmom on August 12, 2009 at 9:35 AM

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I guess from all the medical professionals here on dumbAir believe preventive medicine should not be stressed. Once again in your effort to make one person seem stupid it only shows you as the stupid ones.

jero_jones on August 12, 2009 at 9:27 AM

An ounce of prevention doesn’t mean crap if you got cancer. Prevention doesn’t mean anything if the disease is genetic. Prevention won’t work too well if people choose not to follow it.

Prevention is already done, but it’s not foolproof. Sometimes the disease progresses so badly it needs drastic action. Prevention isn’t going to save any significant amount of money. Period. So he’s barking up the wrong tree.

However like I said, Mr. Doctor seems to be hanging onto to his same old tune: demonize those who make money. That’s his MO.

xax on August 12, 2009 at 9:37 AM

It fits with his leftist worldview that doctors are just part of “the rich” who need to be taken down a few pegs so we can “give more to the poor and middle class.” I also think he has issues over his mother’s death and perhaps blames her doctors for failing to save her life.

I think that “blow” that Barry did during his affirmative action years at Columbia has fried his brain. I am a vascular surgeon who unfortunately does perform amputations and the current reimbursement for a below knee amputation is about $500.00 to $800.00, hardly near the 30K he reports with such authority.

When BO was elected I had some Hope that he may be an honest leader who would put the country’s interests first, but the Dope has emerged as the most crooked, deceitful, and incompetent narcissist. Health care reform is not about the patient, its about the Joker’s legacy.

jero_jones on August 12, 2009 at 9:27 AM

Only if people take personal responsibility for their own quality of life, and apply the preventive measures.

It’s not the government’s job to monitor a diabetic’s diet and lifestyle choices, nor is it their job to make sure the overweight person takes a 30 minute walk every day.

jana on August 12, 2009 at 11:00 AM

I don’t think it’s that bad — he’s not accusing doctors of trying to cash in on unnecessary amputations,

Oh yes he is! If he wasn’t making that link, why would he mention the cost of reimbursement? He could have said, “with proper diet and preventive care diabetes patients could have better outcomes and prevent tragic amputations”, but he specifically referred to the cost and implied that eeevil surgeons are eager to cut off limbs for cash.

But hey, I have an idea. Since Dr. Obama is such a know-it-all, how about he resign from the Presidency and take over the job of Surgeon General?

Isn’t this what the left would call “fear-mongering”? Watch out doctors will cut off your foot or rip out your tonsils for greed!!

As a physician, I know for sure that surgeons do not get remibursed “30, 40, or 50 thousand dollars” for an amputation. Surgeons are lucky if they are reimbursed 500 dollars or even 750 dollars. CRAZY !!

How can a Doctor make their patient compliant?

bloggless on August 11, 2009 at 11:20 PM

There lies the crux. My wife is a doctor who has had to cut off not only someones foot but their entire leg. But it didnt start with their foot it started with one toe. and they were told what to do to not have to cut another toe off. then when they came back and another toe was cut off they were told what to do to stop from having to lose a foot. etc etc. This is the double edge of freedom. You have the right to mess up your life. Its not my responsibilty to pay for it when you do…..

He continues to show his ingorance or maybe it’s just plain arrogance. Doctors never take an amputation lightly. He gives the medical field very little credit. Can someone tell me why the AMA and the Nurses are supporting him? He insults them over and over.

If they support Obama, they will be new Gauleiters, Schutzstaffel, and Sonderkommandos. They are merely looking to expand their employment options. /s

I hope President Obama takes his oath more seriously than he believes doctors do the Hippocratic.
