More Obama: My plan might stop doctors from cutting off your foot

Townhall’s trying to turn this into a sequel to the now-legendary tonsils soundbite from his presser a few weeks ago. I don’t think it’s that bad — he’s not accusing doctors of trying to cash in on unnecessary amputations, merely emphasizing that we need to create better incentives to address medical problems early — but it is weird that this guy keeps coming back to amputated body parts when talking about this. The two goals of ObamaCare as I understand it are making sure everyone has access to treatment generally and (giggle) reducing overall federal health-care spending. I didn’t realize there was an epidemic of people losing appendages that’s driving the urgency, but there you have it.
Oh, and as for his hosannas about preventative care: You know the drill by now.

He could have used a thousand different analogies to make that point but he used a figure that seems expensive to the lay person. $40K for an amputation? A doctor certainly would opt for the $40k rather than the $60 office visit. Right? After all, doctors are evil douches bags.

Patient: I will try my hardest – I will exercise and learn how to use the interwebs so I can learn about diets. I want to save my feets!
Meanwhile in a dark corner… it the SURGEON!!!! run diabetic patient, run on your little stumpy feets… here comes the SURGEON he wants your feets… he has come for the $30,000 foot. Bucks for Bunions! Oh if only the GP was paid enough to talk to his patients, oh if only we completely destroyed our health care system so we could save the feets from the eeeevil surgeons.
Real world:
Dr: Okay at your last visit we talked about ways to lose weight & manage your diabetes, it seems you have gained weight & I am concerned that you may be at risk to develop problems like poor circulation in your feet.
Nurse- here is how to lose weight & take care of yourself.
Patient – uh huh, leaves office & gets doughnuts because no one said you couldn’t specifically eat the ones with jelly and that’s a fruit. Eats 12 decides that will count for the next 12 days.

Yes. A past girlfriend lost her father to complications from diabetes. He lost one leg. Then the other. then an arm. He finally died. The whole thing was not pretty.
I for one am standing up, although I haven’t been on TV yet (I tend to be peaceful. :-) )
I’ve been to tea parties on April 15 (in the pouring rain) and on July 4th (in beautiful weather). I will be in DC on Sept 12 with several members of my family. We are not letting up until Obama cries uncle.

As much as I hate to admit it, this isn’t anything like the “tonsils remark”. That was ridiculous, and this (on it’s surface) makes sense. A lot of diabetics could prevent these types of complications if they practice preventive care.
I will note, however, that I have a good friend who is a nutritionist at a hospital. She counsels diabetics about diet, healthy lifestyle, etc.
It drives her crazy to see the same people, six months later, back in the hospital after their amputation because they refused to do what they needed to do to avoid it.
Barry’s plan to prevent these problems only works if there is someone (presumably from the government) monitering every person’s activities, every day.
That’s why people don’t want government involved in their health care. It makes government too involved in their lives.

His stupid plan will drive virtually every American physician out of the profession within two decades. Who is going to spend 20 years studying their ass off, in order to make $70K a year in today’s dollars.
So we’ll become like the UK, where most doctors are from third world hell holes and we can’t understand anything they say.
But at least we’ll still have homegrown lawyers. We’ll be up to our armpits in them as the Obama Administration will definitely keep them around for the inevitable lawsuits.
