Appearances: Right Online conference
posted at 7:22 pm on August 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Normally I don’t plan my weekends this far in advance, but this coming weekend is special. I will be one of the featured speakers at the Americans for Prosperity Foundation’s Right Online Conference, the annual gathering of conservative activists on the Internet, which meets this year in Pittsburgh, PA. I’ll be just a small part of a star-studded gathering, which includes Republican Senatorial candidate Pat Toomey, the Wall Street Journal’s John Fund, Fox News contributor Jim Pinkerton — and the boss, Michelle Malkin, whose presentation last year charged the crowd.
Besides the speakers, the conference promises some great discussions on leading issues for activists, such as:
- Blogging 101: How to make your voice heard
- Forced unionization
- YouTubing activism
- Protecting patients’ rights
- Old & new media, and the conservative movement
- Moving from Persuasion to Mass Mobilization
You can still get register to attend this conference! It would be great to see Hot Air readers turn out in force, and to get the chance to meet up and exchange notes. It’s Friday and Saturday, and just click on this link to register now!
If you’re in the area and can’t do the whole conference, AFP has a rally to send Arlen Specter a message scheduled for Friday evening at 5:30 pm.

Michelle Malkin:
An Asian woman who writes books attempting to justify the immoral and paranoid imprisonment of old Asian men, women and children in US internment camps that even conservative WWII historians have now admitted was a tragic mistake.
Self-hating indeed.
I guess she’s been called a lot of things. But “compassionate” wouldn’t be one of them.
Blueneck on August 11, 2009 at 7:36 PM
God bless Michelle Malkin.
Percy_Peabody on August 11, 2009 at 7:38 PM
Your really really ugly side is showing.
Ed, this one deserves the BOOT!
katy on August 11, 2009 at 7:38 PM
I hope Meghan McLame is not there.
Michelle Malkin is awesome. I can’t wait to read the book when it arrives.
And note to Meghan: I’m 26, young, conservative and I read books.
jencab on August 11, 2009 at 7:39 PM
No, sadly MM’s ugly side is shown for all to see.

I have always wanted to visit Pittsburgh in August.

Seven Percent Solution on August 11, 2009 at 7:44 PM
You do realize that MM is not Japanese, do you not? You might want to put the “self-hating” card back in the deck.
I find it interesting that liberals castigate someone for writing a book about the internment of American citizens but build monuments to celebrate the man that issued EO 9066.
rw on August 11, 2009 at 7:45 PM
Ed,
Banhammer for blueballs please. His post was waaaaaay over the line on this site.
katy on August 11, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Have any of you dear Dittoheads actually read her book? I have. It is an exercise in rationalization that a defies logic. She also thinks that Joe McCarthy was an “American Hero”. Is this your leader? Read the book.
Blueneck on August 11, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Darn, I’m not going to be in Pittsburgh until the next weekend. A real fine town.
You do know that “Asians” have different nationalities and are individual people, right?
You want to focus on the “tragic mistake” of internment, but at the same time, Japanese “Asians” had overrun and were subjugating and murdering Chinese “Asians” and Philippine “Asians”. By reading your nonsense, a person might think you think there is some “Asian Community” who all know each other and think and look alike.
Give the identity politics a rest – it’s moronic.
forest on August 11, 2009 at 7:49 PM
Of course I do. She is Philippino. That is why I carefully used the term Asian and not Japanese. That still makes her a self-hating Asian.
Blueneck on August 11, 2009 at 7:50 PM
You kiss Arianna Huffington with that mouth?
sherry on August 11, 2009 at 7:53 PM
And what exactly does that have to do with interring Japanese Americans in their own country?

Ed, banhammer time!—> Blueneck.
Geochelone on August 11, 2009 at 7:55 PM
So what do you call Michael Steele? A self-hating African-American? Or do you use the liberal-approved pejorative: Uncle Tom?
Enough of the idiotic identity-driven nonsense.
You have exposed yourself to be a race-baiting tool.
hillbillyjim on August 11, 2009 at 7:56 PM
Ed,
Good for you! Do us proud, report back and — for goodness’ sake — get someone to drunken-blog the proceedings a la Stephen Green over at PJM!
we wait with bated breath!
VoyskaPVO on August 11, 2009 at 7:59 PM
Yes I’m sure everyone wants to ban me. I won’t get banned because I tell the truth. Because I’m getting you a little too uncomfortable and exposing the truth about MM. I ask again…did any of you birthers read her book?
Beautiful face. Ugly person.
Blueneck on August 11, 2009 at 8:00 PM
..yeah, but not on her lips..somewhere further South and to the rear.
VoyskaPVO on August 11, 2009 at 8:01 PM
I agree. This one does deserve the boot.
Out of the gate spewing madness.

When the facts don’t fit your tired liberal ideas, just bend them until they do. While you’re at it, learn to spell Filipino.
Now it comes out, just another liberal that thinks Asian women are nothing more than an exotic piece of *ss.
rw on August 11, 2009 at 8:04 PM
Hey guys, Ed has in the past asked that you email him so there is less mess to clean up should he ban someone.
Cindy Munford on August 11, 2009 at 8:04 PM
HOw many books on the subject did she write?
You are exposing her?
She was the one who sold and promoted the book.
Who was that President who presided over internment and what party did he lead??

RATS!!! I am stricken. I’ll be down in Huntsville, AL this weekend.
Good luck at the event, seriously, I am disappointed that I will miss the two of you and the large contingent of Hot Air readers.
Zorro on August 11, 2009 at 8:05 PM
LOL! So you read rule #1 in the troll handbook.
We love MM. And we enjoy your fear, as well.
ROCnPhilly on August 11, 2009 at 8:06 PM
The message is out: Michelle Malkin’s new book, Culture of Corruption hits way too close to home on the subject of The Jug-eared One’s Chicago on the Potomac Administration, so all efforts must be made to attempt to discredit and ridicule Mrs. Malkin.
Too bad. It ain’t gonna work. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, and we need a hell of a lot more than Lysol.
hillbillyjim on August 11, 2009 at 8:06 PM
OK sorry I did spell Filipino incorrectly. I do not think she is a piece of as*. I complimented her on her beauty because many on this site comment on how ugly Nancy Pelosi or Judge Sotomajor are and you seem to be fixated on a person’s looks if you do not like them.
Why don’t you just answer my question? Did you read the book? Have any of you read her book??
Blueneck on August 11, 2009 at 8:11 PM
Blueneck on August 11, 2009 at 8:11 PM
I don’t think anyone wants to discuss anything with you after you insulted us all right off the bat.
Disturb the Universe on August 11, 2009 at 8:14 PM
Blueballs… thread killer.
katy on August 11, 2009 at 8:15 PM
Let me help you here. It’s clear no one wants to engage in a discussion with you given your vitriol and criticism of the woman who owns and runs this site. We have nothing but respect for her intellect and courage. If you want to engage in a discussion about her book, the best way to go about it would have been to enter her house graciously and make your point with tact and intelligence, not like a clod with a chip on his shoulder.
sherry on August 11, 2009 at 8:15 PM
Yes I know Roosevelt, a democrat, was president. So you admit that it was a stupid, lazy paranoid policy regardless of who was president! Just like MM should have.
Blueneck on August 11, 2009 at 8:17 PM
Fine, I’ll leave now since nobody can give me anything except “we love Michelle unconditionally”, “its her site!” blah blah for an answer.
Huh…just like “Obamabots” I guess.
Blueneck on August 11, 2009 at 8:21 PM
All you lefties see is race. You are a racialist or a racist. Why cant Michelle Malkin just be a writer?
canditaylor68 on August 11, 2009 at 8:22 PM
You oughta know.
Don’t let the door hit you in the butt.
Disturb the Universe on August 11, 2009 at 8:23 PM
So what if German Americans had been interned during WWII? There were too many of them for that, but just say their numbers had been the same as Japanese Americans and they had been interned and you can bet that FDR would have ordered then interned too. So by your “logic” someone of English decent who supported that, to whatever degree, would then be a self-hating European. Your “logic” is seriously lacking to say the least.
Luka on August 11, 2009 at 8:23 PM
You said a Filipina-American is “self-loathing” because of her views toward internment of Japanese-Americans. I wanted to point out that all “Asians” aren’t the same in case you were just an ignoramus. But I think you know that and were just engaging in racialist demagoguery, so I’m done with you now.
forest on August 11, 2009 at 8:26 PM
Hotair has banning thresholds that are inconsistent and capriciously executed.
Luka on August 11, 2009 at 8:27 PM
By the way Mr.Morrissey and Ms.Malkin good luck at the conference. I hope you will keep all of us who cannot attend the conference updated.
canditaylor68 on August 11, 2009 at 8:28 PM
Perhaps you could start a petition demanding that MM fly to wherever FDR is buried and spit on his grave.
Luka on August 11, 2009 at 8:30 PM
Which came first, the chip or the shoulder?

Michelle, YOU, DEAR, ARE AN ABSOLUTE BABE!!!
To paraphrase Joe Biden “…….. she’s intelligent, she’s clean, she’s articulate, etc., etc.”
Welcome to CO! You’ll love it here. I hope you’ll consider running for governor someday.

They were. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_American_internment
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_American_internment
Japanese-Americans were most affected on the West Coast, where America was (justifiably) afraid of attack. Maybe if the Germans would have pulled off their own Pearl Harbor, the US would have wanted all Germans out of the East Coast.
Phoenician on August 11, 2009 at 8:38 PM
Please tell me how this is self loathing.

SEE YOU THERE, FOLKS!
I happen to be fortunate to live 20 minutes from the Sheraton Station Square where this event is being held.
Registered today.
jay12 on August 11, 2009 at 9:36 PM
Are there hotel room still available at Station Square? I wouldn’t want to have to stay with my mom (I’d be coming from Michigan).
By the way – I’ve got some great pictures of Ronald Reagan at Station Square when he was campaigning in the fall of 1980. Just sayin’…
Hope to see some of yunz guyses dahn tahn. And Blueneck – stop being a jaggoff!

Got your book today so even though I cant make it to Pittsburgh I’ll still be learning.
Thanks so much for all that you do Michelle.
mrcarter123 on August 12, 2009 at 7:44 AM
A couple of things.
If we were to assume that Mrs Malkin bore any animosity toward the Japanese, or Japanese-Americans in general, as a catalyst for her book on defending internment, it would not be motivated by self-loathing. First, while proud of her heritage, she has publicly identified herself first as American, not Filipina. Second, for much of modern history, most Asian peoples have borne some resentment toward the Japanese in general, due to their aggressive colonialism in the 19th and 20th centuries.
As to the book itself, I have never read it, but I did watch the YouTube clip of a TV interview with her defending the book. It was not a convincing presentation at all. However, she has referred to aides to FDR at the time, who have told her that her book accurately portrays the thinking at the time that led to FDR’s decision. And so, whether her contention is right or wrong, anyone with an interest in the early years of WW2 could gain something from reading the book.
Which is why I’ll end up reading it.

Wish I could go with all yunz. Grew up in Aliquippa, went to Pitt (Engineering ’77), but am stuck here in KY making steel and paying my taxes and SS. May I suggest you all go early to Pgh, Thursday, and catch my Steelers vs. the Cardinals, Super Bowl XLIII re-match. I also suggest an evening trip up the Incline to the top of Mt. Washington and dinner with one of the best views in America. Or a trip out to east suburb North Versailles to the world’s most politically-conservative restaurant, Casa D’Ice.(www.casadice.com) Or steamed hot dogs and 75 different kinds of beer at the Original Hot Dog Shop on the Pitt campus in Oakland. Or….
SteelGuy on August 12, 2009 at 9:47 AM
And, I might add the following:
Sunday brunch at The Grand Concourse right there in Station Square adjacent to the hotel. It’s an old Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad terminal, complete with turn-of-the-century stained glass CEILINGS! That’s the perfect place if you have a Sunday afternoon flight out.
jay12 on August 12, 2009 at 10:05 AM
Yay Hot Air! This is my favorite conservative site on the internet. I’m so excited to register today and can’t wait to join the conversation!
I wish I lived closer to Pittsburgh. My daughter and I admire our conservative sisters, Michelle being right at the top of the list. Perhaps it’s unseemly to post admiration right out of the gate, but it’s heartfelt: Michelle is fantastic! :)
