White House to Pelosi: Hey, maybe the protesters aren’t un-American
posted at 7:03 pm on August 10, 2009 by Allahpundit
Normally I’d treat this as another instance of The One coordinating with a lesser Democrat to play good cop/bad cop, much as he did on the campaign trail when he’d have Jesse Jackson Jr or some other lackey do his racial politicking for him while he kept his immaculate hands clean. But my contempt for Pelosi is such that I think she really might be so stupid and renegade as to think calling protesters “un-American” is a winning strategy, with Obama now forced to clean up her mess — especially with some town halls of his own looming this week.
“I think there’s actually a pretty long tradition of people shouting at politicians in America,” White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton told reporters on Air Force One when asked about the comments.
“The President thinks that if people want to come and have a spirited debate about health care, a real vigorous conversation about it, that’s a part of the American tradition and he encourages that, because people do have questions and concerns …And so if people want to come and have their concerns and their questions answered, the President thinks that’s important. Now, if you just want to come to a town hall so that you can disrupt and so that you can scream over another person, he doesn’t think that that’s productive. And as a country, we’ve been able to make progress when people actually talk out what our problems are, not try to shout each other down.”
Hey, Bill: What sort of “spirited debate” and “vigorous conversation” did the demagogue-in-chief have in mind when he said last week that he doesn’t want people who “created the mess” to do a lot of talking anymore? Is that the debate where he tells us again that injecting the federal government deeper into health care will cut costs, or that we’ll be allowed to keep our current insurance and we pretend to ignore the economic reality for private insurers forced to compete with a bottomless government plan?
I’m cautiously optimistic that the Pelosi/Hoyer screech is the last gasp of the Democrats’ demonizing tactics and that things will ease up a bit rhetorically this week. Via RCP, here’s Claire McCaskill already trying to set a new tone. The key Q&A is right up front.

The back track coming from Burton is not enough. It needs to actually be Obama telling the American people that he does not support the Speaker of the House calling them un-American.
This was a big deal. It was not an off hand remark. Obama needs to speak to it himself.

RedSoxNation on August 10, 2009 at 7:19 PM
She is that dumb, and The Precedent is dumb enough to think that going after individuals is a good strategy. They’re all idiots in the Washington junta. The only thing The Precedent has going for him is that he only wants to foment chaos and bring pain to America, so he can screw up all over the place and it doesn’t matter. That’s why the moron can say something like “profit and earnings ratios” while trying to address economic issues and then come back and act as if he knows anything. Because he doesn’t care. He just wants to screw things up, and he can do that just as well being an incompetent boob, which he is.
For the record, the traitorous dems are just calling everyone else un-American because they think that they can get away with it, and the media is trying oh so hard to let them. But, America knows that the dems are traitors who are more interested in prosecuting CIA agents than killing any of our enemies. People know that the dems are as un-American as they come. They know that The Precedent is the Traitor-in-Chief, who has more in common with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro than any American.
But, they decided to try and have an affirmative action Precedency, not knowing that the moron would think that they were serious in electing him. And now we are all stuck with this moron who had the “intelligentsia” convincing people that he was smart enough to be trusted in the White House. He’s not smart enough, and he hates us and our nation, and now we are likely to lose everything because of those pricks.

Really? Ya think? I often think Gibbs keeps his job because Obama realizes that Burton’s the first one off the bench to take his place.
I’m wondering about the good cop-bad cop routine. After all, Pelosi and Hoyer are invincible in their districts. The Dems didn’t have any senators try this. And those backtracking (McCaskill and the like) get to appear level-headed despite their wrong-headed position in the overall debate.

guntotinglibertarian on August 10, 2009 at 7:25 PM
This is a consequence of Obama’s desire to be the leader of his party and of the free world, but without the ability or desire to control any of his coalition.
He can’t say ‘no’ to these people and doesn’t seem to understand that an ego as big as Pelosi’s (or any of the other congressional leaders on the Democratic side, or the union leaders, or the special interest group leaders, etc.) isn’t going to listen just because Rahm Emanuel or David Axelrod says so, and Obama’s plunging poll numbers mean they’re not really all that afraid of ignoring him and coming up with their own strategeries, which is how the USA Today op-ed ended up in the paper in the first place.
Conservatives should be thankful Obama is so easy to roll and doesn’t want to do the heavy lifting it would take to mount a co-ordinated effort to pass some of these bills based on anything other than scare tactics. The fact that he’s frightened to rein in his core supporters means its more likely opposition to Obamacare is going to grow and swing voters are going to be more and more turned off by the Democrats in general going into the 2010 election cycle.

Oh, goody. Now who is going to clean up Obama’s mess? A man was injured because of him and yet it isn’t a really big deal even here at HA. I found that whole senario truely frightening especially coming from the President of the United States. Everyone has been after Pelosi and Hoyer, but the greater offense was committed by Obama. Calling for his goons to get in their faces and the HHS Secretary telling them to keep on doing what they were doing is just beyond the pale. Apparently we are paying for them to get in our faces and break our bones with tax payer money. Are Obama’s goons going to show up at Tea Parties and cause trouble? Up until now you could bring your children and grandchildren. Now? not so much. WTH is going on here?

Same thing with Sotomayor, the affirmative action moron who just sailed onto the SCOTUS. The whole situation is pathetic. No one has the guts to just say that The Precedent is a blithering idiot who has no idea what he’s doing and is only out to destroy our nation. That’s the truth, but not one GOP person has the guts to say it.
All I want to hear is one GOP person say, “The Precedent is a moron who can’t even do 8th grade math and it is an absolute embarrassment that this great nation has such a blundering fool in the White House.”
Until someone gets the guts to speak that truth, none of this idiocy will stop.

I can’t help but wonder if this is about more than inflicting mediocre healthcare on everybody. What if the whole point is just to create a huge new government bureacracy that would spawn millions of new union members for big labor groups like SEIU, (which includes both hospital and government workers) including hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of illegal immigrants? This would create a voting bloc of unswerving loyalty to the Democrats (how long do you think it will take to turn all those illegal union members into citizens?) large enough to dictate policy without opposition — forever. This is exactly what happened in the UK, where the NHS is now the third largest employer in the world, though the Uk ranks only 22nd in population. Now it’s an entity too big to kill. If you think things are tough now, just imagine the future if the left gets its way. Yeah, it really is time to panic.

My prediction for this is that it takes a lot of stomach to stand up to people this angry and volunteers don’t have the stomach or passion to do it. I have seen attempts so far and those people are getting run over. They have crossed a line where people are not going to back off and let it go.

lukespapa on August 10, 2009 at 7:43 PM
The real issue with these town halls is that there aren’t a whole lot of follow up questions being asked. When McCaskill says that Congress is going to offer Americans the same options that are available to Congress, does she mean that we can get the same high coverage/low cost plan that they have after only a couple years of work? Or does she mean that we can keep our current plan for as long as we want to (assuming our employer doesn’t drop the plan) just like the members of Congress can keep their current plans as long as they want to?
Of course, town halls aren’t exactly the best forum for follow up questions. You’re usually lucky if you get to ask a single question. If the press were doing their jobs even half-heartedly many of these follow up questions would already have been asked, but, it would be a joke to count on them to actually find out information.
