Video: Pence, Price, Boehner slam Pelosi, Hoyer over “un-American” editorial
posted at 2:20 pm on August 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Megyn Kelly gets Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) to pull his car to the side of the road on his way to a townhall meeting and denounce the smear from Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer published by USA Today. Pence calls the ObamaCare proposal “the last straw” of government control, which is why it has inflamed constituencies across the nation. Pence also predicts that the editorial will have the opposite effect of what Pelosi and Hoyer intended, and that people will only object louder (via John McCormack):
Rep. Tom Price, chair of the Republican Study Committee, connects some dots on the stifling of dissent:
Meanwhile, John Boehner released his own statement, calling the Pelosi-Hoyer editorial “outrageous and reprehensible”:
“For months, House Democratic leaders have worked to silence any opposing views in this health care debate, both here in Washington and around the country where millions of Americans are struggling in this economy. Every poll taken in the last month shows that a majority of Americans are concerned about, if not outright opposed to, the Democrats’ plan because of the cost and consequences it would mean for their own health care. Each public forum should give every participant the opportunity to express their views, but to label Americans who are expressing vocal opposition to the Democrats’ plan “un-American” is outrageous and reprehensible.
“The American people deserve answers to basic questions about whether the Democrats’ plan will increase health care costs, add to the deficit, increase taxes on middle-class families and small businesses, put government between doctors and patients, force anyone to lose their current health coverage, kill jobs, promote taxpayer-funded abortion, or cut Medicare. The fact is Democrats have not been able to address the very real concerns the American people have.
“It’s time for Democrats to start listening. When we return to Washington in September, Democrats should scrap their costly plan and finally work on bipartisan reforms that give Americans what they are seeking: better access to affordable care.”
Tommy Christopher, while supporting the other arguments in the editorial, thinks the two Democrats made a huge mistake, as well as indulged in obvious hypocrisy:
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer wrote an op-ed piece for USA Today that makes a lot of excellent points about the current healthcare debate. Unfortunately, they lead with the kind of loaded statement that plays into the right’s “stifling dissent” meme. The title of the piece is ‘Un-American’ attacks can’t derail health care debate.
Forget, for a moment, whether Pelosi and Hoyer actually make an effective case for the Un-Americaninity of the town hall protesters. For the top two members of the House of Representatives to use the phrase “Un-American” bespeaks a tone-deafness beyond belief, evoking echoes of McCarthyism. It also represents a hypocritical brandishing of the patriotism cudgel that the Democrats have just spent 8 years decrying. …
The fact is, there are many things you can call the protesters, but “Un-American” isn’t one of them, especially not from a liberal standpoint. … While they are correct in denouncing things like effigies of specific members of congress, they are clearly referring to the disruptive protesters as a whole, and the language of McCarthy is inappropriate and unhelpful.
I agree with Tommy that the effigies are particularly unhelpful, although they seem to be a staple of protests from both sides these days. We certainly didn’t hear any scolding from Pelosi and Hoyer when Sarah Palin or George Bush were the target of the effigies. As for Tommy’s regret that the accusation took attention away from their arguments in support of ObamaCare, that looks like a feature rather than a bug.

I think people need to report this website to the White House Ministry of Information Refutation for being fishy… after all, NO ONE is talking about Single-Payer government takeover! HOW DARE Congressman Weiner release this fishy information!
Wait, it says Pelosi pledged it? Er… HOW DARE YOU BELIEVE THIS, YOU UN-AMERICAN!

I’d like to see a Republican make this basic point: You tried to rush a thousand page bill through Congress in 2 weeks; you don’t get to lecture the American people on debate.

Here’s the problem, though.

I said it this morning: Pelosi’s Waterloo.
The more I think of it this could be one of the biggest blunders in American political history. Mind-bogglingly dumb calling the majority of the country un-American.

You know what’s un-American? Spending $500 mil on private jets for Congresscritters during the “worst economic downturn since the Great Depression!”

I love Pence and Boehner. They are great at getting the conservative point across. I think Nancy Pelosi needs to start collecting boxes. She is on her way out. Why isn’t she gone for the CIA issue, anyway?

What about contesting it afterwards? From what we’ve seen so far, what we finally get will probably be unconstitutional. I realize we pass all sorts of unconstitutional legislation nowadays, but what have we got to lose?

Effigies? Who cares about effigies? Is the 2nd Amendment there so that those in power can have the warm and fuzzies too? No. The founders included the 2nd Amendment as an implied threat of violence. They need to fear us. The impunity with which they are acting and have acted needs to end.

I am dumbfounded by the pantywaist metrosexuals who are in such a snit over effigies. Do they not understand that effigies are a time-honored means of political protest dating back even long before American colonists were erecting effigies of King George III. No American President of the modern times has truly arrived as a leader until burned in effigy in at least one foreign nation.
Yet the underlying context of this debate is that there is something unseemly in effigies, that it is so offensive it takes away from the debate. Somebody is going have to explain what is so damned offensive about these things.

On topic, we cannot just say no. There are some changes that can be made to improve the health care system in this nation. A pool for high risk patients and tort reform would be the place to start.
TXMomof3 on August 10, 2009 at 2:34 PM
Too much. I would suggest the GOP draft a resolution commending the American public for exercising their First Amendment rights with such force during the recent discussions on nationalizing healthcare. And condemning those that sought to silence those voices as un-American. That’s right stick the whore’s own words back her actions.

KentAllard on August 10, 2009 at 2:36 PM
Health care is a state issue. The only business the federal government has in health care is regulating inter-state commerce in health insurance, which the GOP has addressed from way back. High risk pools or anything else of the sort are to the states to decide for themelseves, not for the federal government to muck around in. Your idea on tort reform is also something that the GOP has been talking about for a long time, already.

I explained how Freedom of Speech works and that everyone is allowed to have their own opinions, no matter how stupid you think they are. That’s the joy of this country.
Then I explained that people call me all kinds of names for hanging out with Israelis. And that it’s none of their concern who I hang out with or why I do it. The Israelis are my friends, I adore them and it’s perfectly within my rights to do whatever I want.
I shut her up, but I’m pretty sure it didn’t sink in. Then again, she also didn’t know that they increased troop deployments to Afghanistan so you know….

Let’s keep pushing to be heard. They can’t come up with a reasonable tactic to engage opposers of these things they’re trying to ram down our throats so they attack and call us names. You can call me anything you want. I’m a racist. I’m a Nazi. I’m a teabagger. I’m un-American. Oh so what if they think all of that about me? I know better. (I’ve also heard worse in my lifetime.) This I know about the childish: When they feel pressured, and have run out of options, they start calling names. If that doesn’t work, they give their lunch money to hire some ignorant playground thug with more muscle than brains to intimidate their foes. Name calling: Proof positive that we have them on the ropes. Keep pressing. They are about to implode. God Bless America. God, bring righteousness back to our government and our land. We’ve strayed and we know it. We repent. Heal our land.

My concern is that I will be paying much higher taxes for worse health care than I have now, with no prospects of things ever getting any better.
Once Democrats get this in place, it will never go away and Democrats will do what they always do when one of their policies craps the bed – point fingers at Republicans.
What they won’t do, is to make the program any less costly or work any better.
Democrats don’t know what they are doing. Anyone who thinks they do on this, is completely delusional.

The rule of law is what keeps the nation from chaos. The filthy liar in the White House (as does any President) relies on public obedience to the law over vigilantism or otherwise circumventing the system. The military is part of the system and any sort of show of non-confidence would be unprecidented and immediately put the filthy liar’s administration on a death spiral.

I have ceased to be amazed any longer. Is this “speaker of the house” position written into the section of the Constitution (art 1) for Congress? Why are forced to suffer for this fool?
Some lefty lamented the other day about how baaad it was that “such small states” unlike NY or CA were able to have so much sway in the Senate by virtue of the 2 Senate seats each held. The premise was that the larger states should (by population) be able to have more influence than the small ones. Well, the Speaker of the House position holds all of us hostage and forces us to be held hostage to her whims. It is fortunate that we have a Senate (albeit a dysfunctional one) as a bulwark against some of this big state stuff.
This woman needs to be hemmed in.

It’s good to see that many individual states aren’t sitting back waiting to see what is going to happen with healthcare.
They (Oklahoma, Texas – more states likely to follow: Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, both Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, West Virginia; if Mississippi acts, so will Florida.) are working to make sure that the Federal Government doesn’t have the final say.

The Healthcare Union War
Tensions between the California Nurses Association and SEIU escalate at the Labor Notes conference
http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/3624/the_healthcare_union_war/
As more than 1,000 labor union activists gathered in Dearborn, Mich., last weekend for the biennial conference organized by the magazine, Labor Notes, a passionate argument between competing health care unions coursed through the meeting. But by evening, the dispute turned ugly and physical. And the stakes in the dispute cranked up another notch.
On one side were nurses and leaders from the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CAN/NNOC); on the other, staff and nurses with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
The danger of the health care union war is that nurses may be turned off to joining any union, while energy and resources that could be spent against management or for national health insurance will instead be directed toward combat with other unions. But a resolution to the conflict doesn’t look to be coming soon.

Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer should both be forced to resign from their positions in the House of Representatives, as well as from their respective seats in the House immediately.
They both have proven again and again to be totally unqualified to lead and this unbelievably crass op-ed piece in USAToday confirms that fact once and for all time.
Pelosi especially is now a national embarrassment and a joke when it comes to being Speaker of the House. She should never been put in that place of authority to begin with and she is now trampling on the rights and liberties of the same people she swore to defend the rights and liberties of, and she is doing it with almost a sick sense of glee.

Federalism is going to go to court very soon, no doubt, as soon as any state rejects the health care mandate from the federal government. We’ll see if the US wants to live or die. The courts are not very pro-Constitution, so … we’ll just have to see.
That press conference was amazing. The Traitor-in-Chief doubled down on his insane Honduran policy (stating again that the Constitution-following government had perpetrated a coup) and said that he wants legalization and a path to citizenship for illegals.
