Hey dummy, if I don’t like the way my insurance company rations, I can go find another one. If you like the way govt rations, why don’t you just go to a country that already does this, instead of screwing up the system 86% of Americans like just fine?

Instead of having doctors give “best practices” and having treatment decisions stay between a patient and his/her doctor, Oregon’s politicians draw up a priority list each year for treatment funding. If your condition is higher on the politicians’ list, you’ll get more priority for treatment. If it’s lower, or not on it at all, then you can expect to deal with a pain in the ass — literally:

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure there was about a 3 year period earlier in the decade where there was no money so they weren’t accepting any new enrollment on the Oregon Health plan. When they did open it up, I think it had pretty long waiting lists.

I have an acquaintance who is currently on here own with 3 young kids while her husband is currently in drug rehab. Her 1 yr. old needed an MRI for a condition and their insurance had just expired the previous month. She assumed she was eligible and applied for the OHP, and took her son to get the care he needs. After submitting her application online, she was told she would be notified within 40 days whether the kids were accepted or not. If they are, the coverage is effective on the date of the application. She has no way to pay for the MRI otherwise, so she’s crossing her fingers.

I searched the State of Oregon’s OHP website for a couple of hours trying to figure out what the eligibility standards were, but could not find it. The closest I got was a private health insurer’s website who had a glossary of terms and defined OHP and said that there are various factors that go into eligibility, but in general your income had to be below 133% of the federal poverty line. I looked up the federal stats, and that would be about $30,000, as best I can tell. Since she currently has no income (she’s trying to find a job and make arrangements for child care, but no luck so far), one would think she’s got a good chance, but why does it take 40 days to find out?

Is this really the kind of beauracratic nightmare we want to extend to the entire population?

We’ll be reduced to beggging Democrats for care and being threatened by them, if we oppose them.

I think that one of the key variables in determining the allocation of scarce medical resources is “contributions to the community”. The Health Priorities Allocation Board will undoubtedly take such factors into consideration.
