Protester: My family was threatened after I spoke up at Dingell town hall

posted at 5:05 pm on August 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

That’s what you get for being un-American, pal. Someone in the comments to our Headlines item on Pelosi’s and Hoyer’s op-ed this morning suggested it was part of a wink-wink-nudge-nudge scheme by Democrats to legitimize violence against protesters. I won’t go that far — questioning her opponents’ patriotism is actually par for the course for Madam Speaker — but it truly is amazing to think how many “climate of hate” pieces have been written about the right’s rhetorical excesses vis-a-vis the near total pass the left’s gotten over the past week. We’ve had congressmen screeching about “political terrorists,” “brown shirts,” and “rabid animals,” Senators denouncing “un-American” activities, the DNC running ads about “angry mobs,” the president himself telling his opponents to shut up and get out of the way, and the Democratic brain trust now setting up a “war room” to respond to health-care “attacks.” Glenn Beck’s said repeatedly on his show that he supports nonviolent resistance only, but a fat lot of good that’s done him with liberals more interested in the “subtext” of his messaging; pray tell, what “subtext” should we glean from the dehumanizing venom being spit by the Democratic leadership over the past 10 days?

Be happy, I guess, that they’ve finally found a war they can support unequivocally, where for once there’s no need to ponder the “root causes” that alienated the other side.

Think about it. The guy and his wife are aging, and won’t be around to take care of his special needs son. The anger and fear he feels is pretty understandable.

Yep agreed.

So, although I get what you are saying about conservatives making arguments and not yelling, I’m not quite sure I see how this clearly drives away all moderates.

Upstater85 on August 10, 2009 at 5:34 PM

I didn’t say “all moderates”. I said “some”. We need every ally we can get. If that guy had done a quiet, tearful, from-the-heart statement, he would have won over a lot of those kinds of people.

Shouting people down doesn’t advance your argument. And it’s off-putting to thoughtful people.

That’s great but don’t beat up the people who are on your team. People are different. I, like you, would probably never scream or raise my voice but I can admire other people’s passion. Different strokes for different folks.

Cindy Munford on August 10, 2009 at 5:38 PM

It seems to me that a universal problem exists among the mindset of all those who seek power.

The problem is choice.

Marx. Engels. Lenin. Stalin. Hitler. Goebbels.

The problem is choice.

Hitler tried to snuff it out with fanaticism. Marx tried to explain it away in philosophy. Lenin and Stalin tried to snuff it out with force. All tried. All failed.

Every totalitarian system has tried to eliminate it. Every totalitarian system requires it to be destroyed. Total control is the only option for them. Should one person make a decision otherwise then the so called ‘harmony’ and ‘balance’ is disrupted. The equation is unbalanced. The numbers quickly cease to add up and chaos quickly ensues. Certainly, it can be snuffed out but the fact that the chaos existed, if only for a moment, contributes to the eventual systemic breakdown of the entire system.

There is only one system that allows for the choice of individuals. One system that not only allows for it but thrives because of it. Only one that respects the true dignity of man and the rights of mankind both as a single entity as as a group of individuals.

That is the Republic.

And there is only one thing that sustains and nourishes the Republic. It serves as an anchor and a foundation. Both sword and shield of the republic. Destroying those who would harm it and protecting those that would sustain it.

And that is the law.

What is the point of being civil at these meetings? The Reps come there, if they come at all, to spew the talking points and lie about what they are doing. They do not want a dialogue or want to answer questions honestly. I have yet to see a clip of any of them honestly answering a question they have been asked.

Until they start telling the truth, every time they give their rehearsed responses every one of these Reps should be shouted down. It is way past time for civility with these clowns!

Of course he is. And we’re free to behave in a more dignified, persuasive manner.

He could have rolled his son up to the lectern and said, in a quiet, heart-felt way that his son suffers from a condition and it’s his understanding that healthcare reform could mean his son won’t receive the quality of care he needs. And ask for Dingell’s assurance that he won’t support a bill that neglects his son and millions like him.

Instead, he decided to yell and scream.

Yeah, he got airtime. But I’m not persuaded that his kind of airtime is what we need.

Has anybody read factcheck.org about these so-called “death panels”? BTW, for a long-time, I’ve always thought that this Annenberg website is left-leaning (not leftist). Anyway, they (the author) completely debunks these “death panels”. Yeah, the doctor won’t counsel you into suicide, blah, blah, blah. And in fact, if you read section 1233, its true. However, what the author doesn’t give you is context about ALL of the government-run healthcare bill.

The bill establishes a Health Care Advisory Committee that will “recommend covered benefits and essential, enhanced, and premium plans.” And here’s who will participate on the committee: The membership of the Health Benefits Advisory Committee shall at least reflect providers, consumer representatives, employers, labor, health insurance issuers, experts in healthcare financing and delivery, experts in racial and ethnic disparities, experts in care for those with disabilities, representatives of relevant governmental agencies, and at least one practicing physician or other health professional and an expert on children’s health and shall represent a balance among various sectors of the health care system so that no single sector unduly influences the recommendations of such Committee.” And note this: In developing such recommendations, the Committee shall take into account innovation in health care and consider how such standards could reduce health disparities.”

Yeah, their are no “death panels”, but there are government bureaucrats defining what care is appropriate. The commissioner of the HCA (Health Choices Administration) gets to determine which health insurance policies meet Federal QHBP (Qualified Health Benefits Plan) requirements whether in the Exchange or outside the Exchange.

You cannot read this and tell me that certain care will not be rationed, or not covered. Any intellectually honest person cannot state that the elderly WILL NOT be counselled BASED on the allowable treatments, that it is better to end their life sooner.

The cost of this program is prohibitive. The coverage is inadequate. And morally it is wrong. Note that if an insurance company denied benefits, its possible to take the matter to court. With government-run healthcare, one cannot sue the Federal government (unless of course the govt. allows it).

In short, Factcheck.org lies.

They think it is okay to harass an older man and threaten to kill his family, which they do. They think it is okay to bankrupt America, which they are happily doing. They think it is okay to send in goons to beat up on people, which they do.

They think it is okay to bus people into events and pay them to be there, which they do. They think it is okay to make crap up, which they do. They think it is okay to do a crappy job of selling their own freaking plan and then accuse Americans of being unAmerican for not buying it, which they do.

And then when one old guy with a lot of worry on his mind yells at a career politician, they think it is okay to threaten him and his family, which they do.

The reading was from Paul on anger and how we must not let anger rule us. Fine; I agree with that. However, the priest started his homily by telling us that he had upset some people that morning. They happened to be ‘conservatives’. I don’t know what all he said in the morning, but I would have assumed that he would temper his comments after the discussion that followed the morning Mass, so as not to again offend half of his parish. If he did, I would really like to know what he said, because his homily still torqued me off.

He used conservative talk radio as the example of how much anger is in the country. Said he had heard a talk show host say that the seventh deadly sin was being a liberal. Are you kidding me? That is the best example of anger he could come up with? Our president telling us to sit down and shut up isn’t a little more indicative of anger than what was most likely a tongue in cheek comment (even if it is true)? Really?

I think I need to find his email and link him to this post so he can see just some of the anger from the left. There is so much material from the left he could have chosen, and he chose ‘conservative talk radio’. *sigh*

I just love it when the priest causes me to need to go to confession, as I was feeling some pretty serious anger over his obvious bias and/or ignorance. Stop getting your homily talking points from leftist media!!!! Arghhh!

kingsjester on August 10, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Seriously? That doesn’t sound like something Cafferty would admit.

In short, Factcheck.org lies.

Andy in Agoura Hills on August 10, 2009 at 5:43 PM

I posted this already, but this goes along with the Death Panels discussion.

They state Medicare reimbursement fees will go up. This will increase the willingness of doctors to treat Medicare patients. This is a fairly obvious, and valid, conclusion. However, they also want to cut Medicare costs by $500B. Gee, they are cutting costs and increasing utilization at the same time. The obvious question is: How is this possible? Well it isn’t. Some simple high school Algebra I shows why:

Assume the reimbursement rate is $50 per patient and the total amount paid by Medicare is $100,000. This means ($100,000 / $50 =) 2,000 patients are seen.

Assume the reimbursement rate is increased to $60 per patient, then:

In order to see the same 2,000 patients the Medicare budget must be increased to ($60 x 2,000) = $120,000.

If the number of patients seen is increased by 400 (an increase of 20%) then the Medicare budget must be increased to ($60 x 2,400) = $144,000.

However, the situation is the Medicare budbet will be decreased. Assume that the Medicare budget is decreased to $90,000 (10% decrease). This means ($90,000 / $60 =) 1,500 patients are seen. You can’t have it both ways.

I don’t have to shut up, after all aren’t I am American?

AprilOrit on August 10, 2009 at 5:46 PM

Do you have a police report that would prove that?

Yoop on August 10, 2009 at 5:58 PM

His police report with the Michigan State Police – where is it?

AprilOrit on August 10, 2009 at 5:54 PM

I think he said his report is with the local police who turned it over to the state police.

Why don’t you try finding it?

Proves there was nothing there? You do not know what you are talking about. You folks are so lame. A guy gets beat up on camera at an event, and the lefty blogs claim it was an act. Even though it is right there to see…and this man says he called the law about a threat to his life and someone like you who does not even know him immediately calls the man a liar.

What a piece of work you are.

Terrye on August 10, 2009 at 5:58 PM

Be happy, I guess, that they’ve finally found a war they can support unequivocally, where for once there’s no need to ponder the “root causes” that alienated the other side.

Yes, what happened to Democrats who preach everyone needs to calm down and at least try to understand the “terrorists’” perspective?

willamettevalley on August 10, 2009 at 5:59 PM

I suspect this guy is thrilled to be having his 15 minutes of fame.

But if I had to choose someone to be center-stage, I’d choose the soft-spoken black conservative who got beaten up in St. Louis.

I couldn’t believe it either. He was reading a viewer e-mail that asked why Pelosi won’t go on the Healthcare Plan if she likes it so much. Cafferty said she won’t because she knows it is crap.

kingsjester on August 10, 2009 at 6:00 PM

what “subtext” should we glean from the dehumanizing venom being spit by the Democratic leadership over the past 10 days?

People who voted for obama aren’t supporting him on healthcare reform. His poll numbers are dropping; if it keeps up, the dems will have a tough time in 2010. So they have to get support from the top democrat leadership by calling out SEIU, writing Op-Ed’s in USA Today, send talking points to ABC, NBC, CBS, NYT. Oh, and the white house PR arm – organizing for america – has written 4 emails in 3 days! Ooooh. Ooooh. and the president of the united states has established a Snitch Central website.

The Democrat majority’s butt is on the line: They have run up TRILLIONS in debt, passed a stimulus that hasn’t provided JOBS, losing on cap&trade, and card check, closing Gitmo is problematic…

Epic Flail = EPIC Fail

oh, and:

Shut us out in 2009 and WE WILL SHUT THEM OUT IN 2010/2012!

TN Mom on August 10, 2009 at 6:00 PM

We all get angry. The question is, do we act out?

This guy was road rage.

He had more persusasive options.

guntotinglibertarian on August 10, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Exactly.

And the flip flopping amoung these people is suspect at best. All of this craziness over death panels when in reality it is about living wills – that – in fact – all of these people on Fox News pushed in detail during the days of Terri Schiavo.

Back then they were all recommending it, Greta, Meghan Kelly, Alise Weil, O’Reilly and including Neal Cavuto.

But now the otherside suggests it and it’s suddenly not a good idea? And it’s concocted into a wild eyed fear mongering story about death panels??

Bullshit, pure bullshit – partisan dribble.

AprilOrit on August 10, 2009 at 6:01 PM

“Moderate?” As in a “moderate Muslim?” A “moderate” Democrat?

Or “moderate” in the sense of fearful fence-sitters, too timid to get off the fence on either side?

There are no people who are quite so vulgar as the over-refined.

harry flashman on August 10, 2009 at 6:01 PM

I detest them. But we can’t win without them. Right now, they seem to be swinging in our direction. Let’s not scare them off. Let them see decent, honorable, sympathetic people who look and act like them – and then hear Nancy denounce us.

guntotinglibertarian on August 10, 2009 at 5:56 PM

C’mon. Scare them off? Obama’s DeathCare is taking care of that. Look, if the crazy vitriolic left doesn’t scare them off we definitely won’t. They’re looking for Balls …

And we got ‘em.

I’d choose Professor Thomas Sowell (and not wish any harm to anyone) and his ideas would prevail. But that’s beside the point, I think. Multi-pronged set of folks opposed to the federal government’s take-over of such a personal part of the economy. Cars, guns, energy and now healthcare? Don’t mess with all that!

Where do you get your talking points? Robert Gibbs? This man was interviewed and yes, he was unemployed, but he found a great marketing opportunity selling ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ flags outside a townhall meeting. He was beat up for his efforts. Guess he should have signed up on Craig’s list as a union thug instead of trying to make an honest living.

But the leftoids and the crazies (your new gf) deliberately misrepresent what people are saying and now you do, too.
