Legitimate criticism

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, along with Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, wrote an interesting op-ed column in USA Today, calling the increasing numbers of Americans who are asking tough questions about the Democrats’ health-care scheme “un-American.” I know “interesting” probably isn’t the first adjective most people reading this would choose to describe it. It is interesting, though. It’s a desperate play by nervous politicians to extinguish resistance to a massive takeover they’re drooling with eagerness to complete. It’s the arrogant response of a political elite that sees itself as royalty, clad in the unimpeachable moral authority of democracy – a ruling class of philosopher-kings that only expects to be challenged once every couple of years, in carefully controlled local races they have a 90% chance of winning. Pelosi was elected from San Francisco in 1987, while Hoyer has been perched atop the 5th Congressional District of Maryland since 1981. To say that neither of them is used to sustained, energetic, effective resistance to their agendas would be an understatement.

The most interesting thing about Pelosi and Hoyer’s brand of McCarthyism is how pathetically ineffective it is. To their great surprise, calling the protesters “un-American” isn’t shutting them up. Today’s USA Today op-ed is the latest variation on one of the oldest plays in the Left’s playbook: painting their opposition as fundamentally illegitimate. It’s time for them to replace that page in their playbook, because it will never work again.

Declaring your opponents to be illegitimate is a lazy way to avoid having to debate them. No one expects powerful political leaders to lower themselves to debates with fringe lunatics. Much of the public will automatically ignore the ravings of madmen, without feeling any need to examine their arguments at length. If you discount the illegitimate opinions of all those insurance company shills, Republican party operatives, and racists thronging the town hall meetings, why, ObamaCare enjoys overwhelming support!

You can see this cynical ploy running in reverse, if you watch the dim light flickering behind Janeane Garofaolo’s eyes. Only racist Nazis could possibly oppose the magnificent agenda of Barack Obama, the modern Prometheus who dares to snatch universal health care from the evil gods of the insurance industry… therefore, everyone who opposes Obama must be a racist Nazi. Thus, the Tea Party movement stands revealed as a cleverly disguised Klan rally, with brainwashed race traitors distributing “Don’t Tread On Me” flags. Ken Gladney might have been black on the outside, but he had pools of Red State neo-fascism leaking out of him, by the time the SEIU goons were finished questioning his legitimacy.

The Democrats are accustomed to deploying this strategy without much effort, since they had the enthusiastic support of the media. When you have total control over camera placement, it’s easy to film someone like Cindy Sheehan and her tiny band of crackpots as a huge grassroots movement with absolute moral integrity. It’s equally easy to point the cameras away from gigantic pro-life rallies in Washington, and pretend they didn’t happen. Unfortunately for them, Democrats now live in a world where they don’t have complete control over the cinematography, script, and soundtrack of the American epic any more… and they will never get it back.

They began losing it during the 2004 election, most notably in the case of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. It was remarkable to watch Democrat media shills take to the air within minutes of the Swift Boat Vets being thrust into the national spotlight, declaring them “discredited” and floating the usual dark insinuations about their character and motives. For the first time in recent political history, it didn’t work. The 2004 campaign ended with those Democrat operatives weeping in frustration, unable to figure out why repeatedly calling them “the discredited Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” didn’t discredit them. Frustration turned to horror when the rising alternative media had the impudence to question the legitimacy of Dan Rather, the designated heir to Walter Cronkite, and bring his phony National Guard document scam crashing down in flames.

The cultural and media landscape has changed enough to deprive Democrats and their media allies of the power to rule their opponents out-of-bounds easily. It’s darkly amusing to watch them fumble across this new, less slanted landscape, shrieking the devil words they think will scare voters out of questioning them. If you look beyond the squalid little insinuations about swastikas and un-American fifth columns, even the less hysterical challenges to the legitimacy of their opponents are revealing. The accusation that people asking questions at town hall meetings are paid operatives of the insurance companies supposes the superior virtue of politicians to private industry. When Obama’s political staff sends out marching orders to supporters, along with scripts for how to look credible and concerned while advocating state-run health care, it is considered to be noble “community organizing.” If insurance companies were to assist with any kind of organized resistance to Obama’s agenda, it would be denounced as sleazy and sinister.

To appreciate this mindset, you must embrace the central tenet of socialism: the State is caring, compassionate, and wise, far beyond the vile and money-grubbing businessmen of the private sector. The insurance industry couldn’t possibly know anything useful about insuring people, could it? Of course not. Only their greed prevents them from showering Americans with cheap, universal coverage. The same dynamic is at play when liberals sneer at the idea of allowing energy companies to have any say in energy policy. It’s also why the Left loves to extol the virtues of “working Americans,” while offering only hatred to the business owners who employ them, and arrogant contempt for the consumerist culture that purchases the products they create. On any given topic, the only legitimate voices belong to politicians and their supporters. Businessmen are expected to sit quietly in their cells and await judgment.

The Left’s challenge to the legitimacy of its opponents stands reality on its head. In truth, there is no greed as boundless and vicious as a politician’s lust for power… and unlike the energetic pursuit of the profit motive, the greed of a Nancy Pelosi produces nothing useful as a side effect. There is no class of people less qualified to run any industry than the political class, whose priorities never include the health of the industries they run into the ground. No one cares less about their “employees” and “customers” than a liberal politician. No one should be allowed to “buy” controlling interest in any industry with a stack of ballots, because the Constitutional restraints on government were not meant as minor inconveniences for the State to navigate around. Elections may have consequences, but the suspension of anyone’s right to property or free speech should never be among them.

In the end, health insurance is like any other commodity. There are only two ways to obtain it: buy it, or force someone else to give it to you. The people who understand this cold truth do not sacrifice the legitimacy of their dissent by acting outraged in the face of an outrage.

After drinking from a potion of Saul Alinsky’s, Jeremiah Wright’s, Nancy Pelosi’s, Steny Hoyer’s, Janeane Garofaolo’s, the enabling MSM’s and his own creation, Barack is transformed into the cruel, remorseless, evil Herr Hussein, representing the hidden side of Obama’s dual nature brought to the fore. Barack has many friends and has a pleasing personality, but as Herr Hussein he becomes more and more dictatorial, encourages slander and then violence and becomes ever more fascist like as time goes by as the Herr Hussein side of his dual nature continues to grow in dominance. After taking this potion repetitively, he no longer needs to rely upon it to unleash his inner fascist demons.

Do not imagine for a moment, Doctor Zero, that leadership is a pleasure. On the contrary, it is a deep and heavy responsibility. No one believes more firmly than President Barack Obama and all those in his administration as well as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer that all of America’s citizens should be free to assemble and speak out about what they think is best for themselves and what is best for America without being molested. They would all be only too happy to let America’s citizens assemble and speak out unmolested, but sometimes America’s citizens might be racists, Nazis, political terrorists or dressed too well or not dressed well enough, Doctor Zero, and then where would we be?

Slavery is freedom. Oppression is liberation. Ignorance is strength. Death is life.

And the majority of American people agree as recent polls show they trust the “evil insurance companies” with their health far more than they trust these “benevolent” democrat thugs. I must have told 100 people in the last 3 weeks: If you have someone you love who has been gravely ill or seriously injured, and is alive to share your life with you today, ask yourself who made that happen. Now imagine the same medical crisis with politicians deciding how the medical professionals should proceed, and how much money is too much to spend on that person you love. AND, if they screw it up, what will your recourse be?

Yep, been through many such medical emergencies….
My first son was born 6 weeks premature because my wife developed preeclampsia – a dangerous high blood pressure condition. I could have
lost them both.

A politician would have just ordered an abortion and been done with it…..

A C-section was performed and my son spent 3 weeks in the hospital.
He is almost 13 now – as crazy as any 13 year old…

It cost $100,000 for all that care and the insurance company paid it all.
I had no problems. I shudder to think of young couples thinking of having children under ObamaCare.

ObamaCare will be a way to control the population – people won’t want to have kids.

About a year ago Kentucky Educational Television (KET) featured an interview with Nick Clooney, George Clooney’s father. Nick was a local television personality in the Cincinnati area long before George was famous.

In the interview the elder Clooney bemoaned the changing media. He explained that in the days before cable TV and the internet there were only a few sources of news, and that it built a consensus among the American people. Now, he whined, there was too much diversity among news sources and the American people have too many variant opinions on pressing issues.

Clooney admitted something that no other media personality or newsman will admit these days. They no longer control the news, and they hate it.

I couldn’t believe what I heard. I’m going to search KET’s website and YouTube for the interview. The interview part of a show produced at Western Kentucky University, which is in the nearby town of Bowling Green, but it aired on KET.

It’s very revealing.

I once worked on a financial appraisal of a congressman’s papers. The congressman was from Kentucky and represented his district for nearly a half century. What struck me about his journals was how shallow his thinking was, and how tied into Washington issues he was without ever thinking about his district.

Yet, when he was in his district, he peddled himself as a man of the people, who cared about Kentucky and his hometown (Bowling Green).

I don’t understand the collective thinking of the Democrat party on this issue. They are killing themselves. Yet, the hard core liberals that I know are cheering these kinds of attacks from Congress, the White House, and the DNC. They think it is brilliant.

The Democrat politicians with whom I work — Blue Dogs at the local level — are terrified. Terrified. I mentioned Nancy Pelosi to one during a meeting this morning, and he buried his face in his hands.

My question is, has Obama issued Order 66?

I think also, that average people have gotten tired of being lectured and abused by the political and media elite for simply wanting to live their lives as they see fit. Couple that with the perception that the only time the elites in Washington have anything nice to say about their constituents is when they are trying to get re elected and its pretty easy to see why people are beginning to get fed up.

According to this article the UK National Health Service was the world’s third largest employer in 2004. Only China’s People’s Liberation Army and India Railway had more employees. Such a configuration in the US WOULD be the world’s largest employer … and that would mean that the DNC would reap a windfall from the labor union representing the millions of employees required to run such a system.

It works, it needs refining not gutting. There are 2 ‘public plans’ out there now, you going to tell me the government has done a wonderful job with them? They’re both on the ropes, and you think the gov’t can do a better job by killing the free market option in yet another segment of the economy.

Congress can’t figure out anything that isn’t their business. Their business is politics, writing useless over reaching laws, and stealing money from Americans. They have no business in the insurance industry, banking or mortgage industry, or the auto industry.

Hell, I don’t think I’d trust them in the rest room floor sweeping industry. They’re ALL useless. BOTH sides of the isle. If they really wanted things fixed they’d lift these tedious restrictions off the medical and insurance industries and go do something productive like tort reform.

Dr Zero delivers yet another verbal full body slam.

May he keep up the good work.

Doctor Zero, love your work, but for god sake man… Brevity…

Politics ain’t beanbag and all of life doesn’t fit into twitter size bites.

I like Doc’s stuff. My only problem with it is that I can’t focus when reading big blocks of text. So I have a problem with AP and Ed’s stuff too sometimes. But that’s my problem, and Zero’s stuff is still really enjoyable.

Maybe I need to see the Eye Doctor so I can read my other Doctor!!!

Never sacrifice clarity for conciseness. =)

Thank you for the clear picture, Dr. Zero, rather than a concise ‘picture’.

What is the difference between a rabid wolverine and Michelle Obama. Is the rabid wolverine more cuddly?

You’ve got me there.

When deification occurs, any criticism of the deity is blasphemous and must be put down and ultimately silenced lest it create discord among the flock. It is the duty of the accolytes and priests to counsel their congregants to quell any such discord.

Awesome read.

One of Obama’s promises may be coming true. He promised the most transparent administration ever.

The internet is making this a reality and I think corruptocrats on both sides of the aisle are finally concerned about their cushy fiefdoms.

In a world where every stupid thing out of your mouth is on the internet within seconds, there is little room to dodge the subsequent incoming rounds.

We are finally seeing the demise of broadcast and print media. I can come to this site and then go to DU or some such cauldron to get an opposing view. And make up my own mind.

The battle has just begun, but I believe we are on the cusp of REAL change. Keep fighting and continue to PUT THE INFORMATION OUT FOR THE WORLD TO SEE.

Corruptocrats can only take so much light before they start scurrying away like the cockroaches they are. Term Limits!

riverrat10k on August 11, 2009 at 11:15 AM

Hell, I don’t think I’d trust them in the rest room floor sweeping industry. They’re ALL useless. BOTH sides of the isle. If they really wanted things fixed they’d lift these tedious restrictions off the medical and insurance industries and go do something productive like tort reform.

Spiritk9 on August 11, 2009 at 2:49 AM

Remember the Senate dining room fiasco? Can’t even run a restaurant. Or better yet, liked the idea of a restaurant, but can’t be bothered to actually run it after legislating it into existence. Same old same old. Legislate to get elected and try to ignore the outcomes.

Actually, under the new Meghan McCain Metric for measuring popularity, I don’t exist at all, because I don’t use Twitter, and therefore have no Twitter followers. Your eyes are blurry because you’ve been staring at a blank page and imagining you just read something. Here, try reading this:

OMG I cant believe ppl pay $$ to read malkin books when u can read hip cute young me fer FREE! ROFLMAO!

That should clear up your blurry vision, along with any complex thoughts you might have been having.

Doctor Zero on August 11, 2009 at 11:53 AM

Every time I read a Dr. Zero post I find myself thinking “damn good article”.

Put this guy on the front page please.

I linked over to her comments (Meghan’s). ROFL. I thought the same thing. Are people that use Twitter twits? Her arguement about popularity with the young is silly.

And of course, like you, I apparently don’t exist and am uninformed because I am not a twit.

If Pelosi thinks all this speech is so un-American, perhaps she should move to restore the House Committee on Un-American Activities. If she feels so strongly about this un-American speech, she should start a formal investigation. They could use the snitch-list as their starting point, and make you tell them with whom you e-mailed and discussed Obamacare.

I personally support public option. I state that repeatedly.

However, if Congress is going to muck it up, just leave the system alone. I’m convinced it will hit bottom eventually.

It doesn’t work now. That’s reality.

But if Congress can’t create a reasonable program, and it’s looking like they can’t, then let it go.

AnninCA on August 11, 2009 at 2:30 AM

Here you go again!

I personally support public option. I state that repeatedly.

This is the worst of all possible choices, in that it is no choice at all. There will be no free-market solutions, no competition, no reason to offer better products at lower prices, if there is only one entity (the federal government) paying medical providers.

However, if Congress is going to muck it up, just leave the system alone. I’m convinced it will hit bottom eventually.

Congress is in the process of trying to muck it up. We already have the best medical care in the world; none of the changes being considered by the multiple plans under consideration by the congress will in any way address the need of the current system to have costs reduced, and care improved.

These changes will only come from:
1. Tort reform
2. Allowing insurance companies to offer plans across state lines
3. Allowing “retail purchase” of health insurance.
4. Separately purchasable catastropic care insurance.

None of these things are being considered.

It doesn’t work now. That’s reality.

It does work now. This blog is full of people who:
A. Are happy with their current insurance
B. Have had numerous positive insurance experiences

Saying “it doesn’t work now,” without offering a shred of proof, doesn’t make it so.

Ann, once again; you need to do the reading on this, and you have been pointed to many sources of good information. You have refused to educate yourself on this issue, and continue to post words without thought.

And, you still need to deal with your unspeakably vile comments on the Reagan thread.

Pelosi’s statement was code for her (the Democrat) socialist soldiers, to start using swastikas and other race based smears and slurs, in a way they can try to blame the conservative activists.
These people are so low they have to look up to see whale crap!
