Hoyer, Pelosi call protests against ObamaCare “un-American”

posted at 9:30 am on August 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I guess the Democrats have really decided to go nuclear in support of ObamaCare.  In the face of massive protests at townhall meetings as elected officials face their constituents, Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer have a new strategy to avoid accountability.  They simply have decided to call protests “un-American.”  No, I’m not kidding, and they did it in print (via Cuffy Meigs):

However, it is now evident that an ugly campaign is underway not merely to misrepresent the health insurance reform legislation, but to disrupt public meetings and prevent members of Congress and constituents from conducting a civil dialogue. These tactics have included hanging in effigy one Democratic member of Congress in Maryland and protesters holding a sign displaying a tombstone with the name of another congressman in Texas, where protesters also shouted “Just say no!” drowning out those who wanted to hold a substantive discussion.

These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades.

Health care is complex. It touches every American life. It drives our economy. People must be allowed to learn the facts.

I can’t think of three better reasons to get government out of health care than that it’s “complex,” “it touches every American life,” and “it drives our economy.”  However, it’s now apparently un-American to say that it in public.  Will Pelosi and Hoyer set up a tip line for un-American activities, such as flag@house.gov?  Maybe they’ll just recreate the House Un-American Activities Committee to hold hearings and demand testimony.  After all, that effort had such a glorious history of operating on the same principles Hoyer and Pelosi espouse here, which can be boiled down to “shut up and do what you’re told.”

We know that members of Congress don’t read bills before voting on them.  Now we find out that they don’t read the Constitution before taking the oath of office that demands loyalty to it.  We know that because, in the First Amendment, the Constitution not only protects the right of free speech but also the right to petition government for a “redress of grievances.”  That means that people unhappy with the direction of government have the right — in fact, have a duty — to air their grievances to their elected officials and demand better governance.

There could be nothing more American than appearing at a town hall and confronting elected officials over their wrong-headed policies, especially when those policies accrue more power to the federal government and eliminate freedom of choice for American citizens.  Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer don’t agree.  They apparently believe that their elected positions gives them the right to dictate to the country, and the right to be free of protest and dissent.  In other words, they see themselves as royalty — as if they themselves were the state, and any protest is un-American simply because it opposes their policies.

They’re impugning your patriotism for using the First Amendment.  That tells us everything we need to know about the Democratic majorities in the House and the Senate.  This is a new low in American politics, and both Pelosi and Hoyer are foolish enough to put it in USA Today for all to see it.

Update: The boss notes that Hillary Clinton has slammed Pelosi and Hoyer for questioning the patriotism of dissenting Americans:

“I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you’re not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration.”

Oh, wait, that was from 2003 … when we had a Republican administration. Now it’s “I’m sick and tired of people who disagree with us, which is why Barack Obama set up Snitch Central at the White House.”

San Francisco used to be such a wonderful town…spent a lot of time in the Russian District, great restaurants. The old Presidio was once one of the most sought after assignments in the Army. One could walk anywhere in uniform and get seated in any restaurant or bar or other venue, and people actually treated service members with friendliness. Fleet Week was a major major local event. Armed Forces Day each May at the Presidio had thousands and thousands of San Franciscans in attendance.

Today?

Nancy Pelosi represents, truly represents, what San Francisco has become.

For God’s sake, San Francisco, redeem yourselves. Vote this clown out of office forever next fall.

In fact I think some of the townhall protesters should put this on their list of questions:
“If Nancy Pelosi gets reelected will you vote to make her Speaker of the House or not?

But, But, those “fringe lunatics” don’t want to debate at the town halls. From the videos I’ve seen they are drowning out any debate with their shouting over the Rep and the person asking a question. That reminds me of the brown shirts.

You may be correct, or worse they may pull some stealth redefinition. Women having children here have been redefined, although they should not have been.

Pelosi is acting just exactly like the socialist dictators or the 20′s and 30′s. The entire libturd party is. We are a little fortunate in that they are very incompetent, but I fear what they will do when they decide to get really mean.

Right now they look like a team of bombastic buffoons.

Everything they do turns into a disaster and causes a storm of sheep dip.

And Bozo IS a failure.

The scary thing is now Democrats can NOT afford to lose on healthcare. After having called more than half the nation Nazis and anti-American, if Democrats lose, they will have literally lost to Hitler.

You can’t come back from that. If they lose, expect them not to lose with grace.

Nuclear is a good term. Pelosi seems angry, since she was called out for the waterboarding idiocy.

Personally, I subscribe to the theory that once someone introduces that metaphor, they are admitting that they have lost the argument entirely.

And that goes for both sides.

Calling Bush “Hitler” or calling Obama “Hitler” is one thing.

But, describing in detail national socialism as it is being crafted in America or taking examples from major propagandists over the past century and juxtaposing the same in the present circumstance, or citing tactics and strategies used by fascists or national socialist regimes over the past century and comparing and contrasting the same on the present circumstances is entirely legitimate discussion.

President Barack Hussein Obama dispatched his Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and his deputy to “fix” this situation of townhall demonstrations. The president needed to provide Congressional Democrats with “some cover” and dispatched his friends from the SEIU to Russ Carnahan’s assistance in Missouri.

The President of the United States, with this action, unsheathed the sword of the state and leveled it against the flesh of the American Citizen. As a result of this action on the very same day, Mr. Ken Gladney, a black conservative man, was subjected to racial slurs and physical assault leaving him injured and hospitalized. His offense–selling buttons and flags. “Don’t Tread On Me” was the message.

One has to ponder whether or not the President arrived at this decision after much thought and anguish–similar to that of President Abraham Lincoln, when contemplating the strategy of the Civil War, in which thousands of Americans were fighting each other and rending the leadership abilities and morality of the president. Moreover, one has to consider if the President now bears a tinge of guilt, as President William Jefferson Clinton did or should have, after the Branch Davidian Raid in Waco, TX where dozens of people died as a result of a fire and failed assault.

COL Nathan R. Jessup in “A Few Good Men” arrogantly denied ordering the beating of PFC William Santiago at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The beating was meant to “teach a lesson” and to correct a Marine who was stepping out of line in his platoon. The resultant scandal rocked his command and the Marine Corps resulting in his XO committing suicide. COL Jessup denied making the order right up until the point when the JAG lawyers pressed him to answer for it–and this pressing forced the mask to slip revealing a deeply angry and resentful man whose actions up until that point were merely to maintain a facade of a dedicated Marine commander who acts only to protect his country. COL Jessup is a great object lesson into President Barack Obama insofar as the facade, the mask, the anger and the resulting injury to someone he was tasked to care for. President Obama is tasked to care for Mr. Ken Gladney, just as he is tasked to care for all of us. This episode has shown his willingness to derelict his duties in the pursuit of his own agenda.

President Barack Obama must answer for the Assault Heard ‘Round the World. President Barack Obama must be questioned in regards to the assault of Mr. Kenneth Gladney.

As Tom Cruise boomed to COL Jessup, “I WANT THE TRUTH!”

……and so …do….we.

Don’t Tread On Me.

I as much as President Obama has as his firsty priorty as President, the protection of American citizens.
A citizen was attacked by the Presidents actions, it can then be accurately stated that President Obama is a failure as President.
