Hillary snaps: I’m the secretary of state, not Bill
posted at 7:35 pm on August 10, 2009 by Allahpundit
I saw the wire reports about this earlier and rolled my eyes at the suggestion that she’d gotten truly angry, figuring the media was overplaying it to goose the “Bill’s marginalizing Hillary!” narrative after his North Korea trip. Then I watched the video. Dude.
Odds of any future diplomatic ventures for BJ: Low.

Weight gain on her face, the mullet haircut. And obvious botox.

Wow – I am torn in many directions with my thoughts.
Hillary is tough – you go girl.
Hillary needs to get la_d.
Hillary is looking pretty bad – where’s hair and makeup?
Hillary is sick of Bill taking the light away – and should be.
Hillary did not want to be there.
Hillary is tough – and in the end – I respect that.

Something tells me Bill got a very special “thank you” from those two lovely journalists he “freed” from North Korea, and Hillary is not happy about it. Not happy at all.
Rational Thought on August 10, 2009 at 8:43 PM
According to Tapper, the question was mis-translated, substituting “Mr. Clinton” for “Mr. 0bama.” Hillary, of course, interpreted it as a request for one more reprise of “I am Woman, Hear Me Squeak.” The best part would be the looks of deep confusion on the faces of the students when her remarks were translated.
The simultaneous confluence of 3 such narcissists as Hill, Bill and 0bama in O Brave New World America™ must be leaving the real world in awe.

We’ve many times seen Condoleezza Rice act much more gracious and pleasant while politely putting much more serious dissers in their place. Perhaps Secretary Clinton could take a few lessons in professionalism from her.

Really stupid question; she had a right to get a lot more pissed than that. Unfortunately, that is a pretty common African male’s view on stuff; a woman can’t possibly be allowed to have her own opinions. Working with the older orphan girls in Uganda, I am constantly dealing with some of this stuff.

I think it is actually sad. All you here is how who would she be without Bill. That being said, she has a responsibility to represent our country and snapping like that was inappropriate. You know Condi would have never acted like that. By the way guys, her looks or weight have nothing to do with the issue.

I second the motion.
Stop whining and bitching. If you were so eager to appease a terror-sponsoring government, you could’ve rushed to the rescue with one of your stupid, misspelled ‘reset’ buttons and shown the world, once again, that you’re a piss-poor excuse for a secretary of state that thinks using tired, recycled ideas from an office-products commercial makes you look smart.
Yeah. It made you look just about as smart as your jealous, childish televised outburst just made you look.
Stupidass.

Perhaps the question was mistranslated, but Hillary’s not an interpreter and she responded to the translation that she was given.
Was her response a good one? No.
Was the question, as it was conveyed to her by the official translator, a reasonable question to ask of the Secretary of State? No.

Sad indeed.
She’s in shithole Africa while Obambi is doing her job down in some 5-star resort in Mexico.
Slick Willie just took a l-o-n-g plane ride with 2 hot(and grateful) Asian chicks he just rescued from captivity in North Korea.
Pelosi just ordered a bunch of plush jets Hillary could have used for taxpayer-funded globetrotting, so I imagine she’s kicking herself for giving up her Senate gig.
I haven’t seen a Secretary of State this neutered since…..well……….Colin Powell. Nevermind.
David2.0 on August 10, 2009 at 9:02 PM
The funny thing about this mistake — in terms of the U.S. media — is if you remember last week a ton of the spin on Bill Clinton’s trip to North Korea was how truly wonderful it was that not only did we have Hillary as Secretary of State, but we also had her husband to perform these humanitarian deeds around the world. It was sort of a 21st Century version of Bill’s “Buy one, get two” line from the 1992 campaign.
It was only the mild snark around the edges that you heard any quips about how Hillary was taking all this. Fast forward five days and the answer is: Not very well at all, thank you. A weekend with having to deal with all the stories putting her husband back in the foreign affairs spotlight obviously was annoying the hell out of her, and the question — inappropriate as it may have been — just forced all that simmering resentment to the surface.
Since it’s Hillary and not Obama, the late night comics actually will run with this one … but not too far, and you can expect the incident to be gone from the news pages and from their joke repertoire by Wednesday.

I really wanted this cranky obnoxious woman to win the nomination….back when i was still a democrat.
I was even willing to forgive sniper fire and all the other inconsistancies because i felt she was intelligent enough and patriotic enough that she would not turn america into little havana.
Because i knew that no matter how corrupt the clintons were, they still loved this country and were not marxists.
I Believed that she would somehow rise above all of this and become that shining beacon to guide the democrats back to the light after Obama and his rotten filthy mother f#ckers from chicago tore this country and the democratic party apart.
I was saddened when she accepted the secretary of state position, and am just grossed out by her behavior as of late. Looks liek the Clintons have figured, meh screw it, country is going to hell and we are all here for the ride…might as well sit at the front instead of the back.
Now instead of that woman i admired when i was once a democrat, all i see on stage is a cranky old b!tch with cankles and a rather tight pantsuit looking irritated at fact that destiny passed her by and looking resentful of the sugar pill she decided to swallow to be part of the historic moment when America elected the first marxist a$$hole as president.

If this was a mistranslation and the questioner meant Obama not Bill Clinton, this is embarrassing. If it wasn’t, its still embarrassing. Shouldn’t the SOS be more gracious and have some diplomacy? She’s not in the Bronx, she’s representing the USA. She needs to be polite whether she wants to or not and not get personal about it. Bush didn’t look this bad event when they threw a shoe at him. So immature. At every turn this is the worst administration ever. They can’t manage the simplest things no wonder the big issues are so screwed up.
mph on August 10, 2009 at 9:35 PM
The point here is that Hillary’s perceived victimhood as the beneficiary of Male Power (conferred on her by her own father and her husband) is her only issue, as amply demonstrated by her behavior over the last 30 years.
Whether or not someone mistakenly identified the President she served as her husband, her response was deeply personal, and therefore completely inappropriate to the chief diplomacy officer of a nation.
And I’d still adore watching the reactions of her audience as she seemed to angrily say that 0 was her husband. How do you say “WTF” in African?

epluribusunum on August 10, 2009 at 9:51 PM
Okay, seriously guys.
1. There are a lot of Palin supporters around here. I happen to be one of them, myself. But I was a Hillary supporter before then. So when I log on to HotAir and read a bunch of this “WOAH DOUBLE-WIDE-LOAD OMG SO FAT!” remarks about Hillary, it comes off as hypocritical and counter-productive.
2. Yeah, Hillary is a Democrat. Yeah, Hillary is a Clinton. But at the end of the day, Hillary is probably one of the only Democrats who will be coming out in 2010-2012 swinging against Obamanation. And y’know what? There are going to be a helluva lot of Indies and Democrats that are going to listen to Hill. So the constant partisan snarking from the “right” doesn’t help with those two groups.
3. I really don’t see the problem here. Mistranslation as other places are now reporting? Sure. But that’s not what SHE was told vis-a-vis “translation.” Would the reaction be the same if someone asked Sarah Palin — as Governor — what Todd Palin thinks about a specific policy?
And as far as comments like this:
Perhaps then you should watch this video where, in Kenya, Hillary was asked, as a sitting SECRETARY OF STATE, about some insane Kenyan’s request to Bill Clinton for Chelsea’s hand in marriage! And that was reported on their freaking national news!
“So what does your Husband think about some random Kenyan stalker’s offer to marry your daughter, MADAME SECRETARY?”
Her response? Well, watch at this link! Consummate statesman. But give me a break if you think this would have been asked of a male SoS, or if any of you would tolerate it if international media was commenting on some stalker wanting Bristol Palin’s hand in marriage.
Short point is this: there are good Democrats out there. I consider myself one. My party left me over sexism and shit policy, and there are a lot of others out there who still feel this way and will feel this way… unless you give people like me a reason to believe the forced media meme that Republicans are women-hating knuckledraggers.
I’d prefer that not happen.

I was banned from my State blogs — even after meeting the GOVERNOR as a Dem blogger many times before, and the bloggers knew me personally — because I switched to McCain/Palin.

It’s good to hear you say that about Dems. My own father who I consider a very smart, rational person continues to believe everything the leftist media tells him. I’m pretty sure he knows I’ve become a Republican, though it’s not something we discuss (it would be hard to miss the McCain/Palin sign in my front widow as well as the Palin sticker on my car.) And yet he refuses to take even a quick peek into the base ideals of the conservative party. I grew up hearing how terrible Reagan was for this country from him. Then I grew up figuratively speaking and started reading the news, and paying attention. What a surprise! Republicans actually have some great values, are pro-family and on top of it all are not nearly as judgmental as Dems. Are there bad people on the conservative side?… Of course, that’s just human nature. But you really cannot believe the MSM and their gross generalizations.
Sorry, I didn’t mean that to be so long!

And thanks (and congratulations) for fighting your way out of the KOSkids’clubhouse by being reasonable. Good for you.
warbaby on August 10, 2009 at 11:44 PM
Thanks for that, 4shoes! Totally with you. My parents are Dem — my whole family is blue-collar FDR Dem, really — and my mom and I simply cannot talk politics anymore even though we used to agree on everything!
She hates Sarah Palin (and hated on Hillary before that; she is an Obama-fan through-and-through). I tell her I was raised to be a feminist. I tell her about how I struggled with college aid while I saw people with lower quantifiable merit qualify for a LOT more college aid based on “other factors.” But she doesn’t budge. Hell, she got mad at me for getting her mom — my grandma — to start liking Hillary, and then Palin!
It’s part and parcel of the cycle, eh? But you just have to keep on truckin’. I flipped. I am for healthcare reform, but not with these huge deficits (and not THIS plan). She’s for it. Part-n’-parcel.
But attitudes will change slowly and surely. The thing is to not alienate based on stupid shit like “WOW HILLARY IS SUCH A FAT COW!” Unproductive. Hell, even Michelle Malkin basically avoided Hillary in Culture of Corruption. Why? Michelle’s smart, and realizes there’s a lot of anger out there, and it’s directed at OBAMA.
Cross the Hillary Hurdle should it present itself. Not now, when it’s effectively counter-productive.

I agree with you about the fat comments being unproductive. Plenty of overweight historical political figures whose shoes none of us here could fill.
But Hillary should have stopped for a minute and asked the translator to clarify the question. How hard is it for her to ask, ” Does he mean President Obama or my husband?”
Her response was not statesmenlike.
Hillary’s words and actions the last several months have left me in doubt of all the praise for her intelligence and hardwork that was poured out on her in the beginning of the election cycle when she was the candidate to beat.
My bet is that Hillary will fade from public view. If she insists on running in 2012 the DNC chairperson will probably have a file of all these moments to show her and she will leave the room more angry and embarrassed then when she entered.
