What is so bad about standing up, us and our candidates, and stating clearly that we support for the Constitution, respect have for life, we demand less government and demand more personal responsibility? After defining each of these principles, then apply the principle to current events, asking if each action supports or violates the principles.

We have to invest ourselves, our energies, our beliefs, into America, and it does take effort, lots of effort to make it work.
Hot or cold…I can deal with that. The lukewarm, the insipid (Brooks, Noonan, Frum, et al)….makes ya want to vomit. (Isn’t there a New Testament verse on that subject?)

I don’t think you can reach out to them. They have their own little Cottage Industry going as the Republicans that liberals can stomach having around them. Plus they never miss the opportunity to take a shot at the conservative wing of the party. Couldn’t the pieces written by Ms. Noonan and Mrs. Parker just as easily be considered as advice to the president to help him move the legislation along as oppose to a rebuke?

The problem with that analysis is that social conservatism generally outperforms economic conservatism. It is true that Obama, like Carter before him, is trying his very hard to show people why leftist economics don’t work, but there is little question we will lose votes if we sacrifice social conservatism – both the activist base of the party and most of the moderates that actually pay attention to politics*.
*As I’ve mentioned before, I believe that most moderates are so because they are largely ignorant of politics. They don’t care much about the particulars and almost always vote for the more charismatic candidate. Note that the more charismatic candidate has won every presidential election since at least 1972…

Yes, there are way too many who view their right to vote on par with their taking out the trash or washing their car. Bothersome, but one is supposed to do it.
Dick Gephardt won several primaries back in the day because he was “young, vibrant, and handsome.” John Edwards was a candidate because he was just so likeable. JFK’s looks were such that long(er) hair on men in America and men no longer wearing hats became the rage. [The hat industry crashed due to JFK, and Vitalis and Brylcreme disappeared from the store shelves relegated to obscutity.]
Some of the worst tyrants in our history were pretty damn charismatic…as were Jim Jones and David Koresh.
It is a sad commentary that you are pretty much on target…charisma is what matters those final seconds before one punches the ballot.

I understand your anger. I also get angry with the fecklessness GOP national organizations and their apparent singular focus on raising money for themselves.
However, in this particular case, I believe it is best for the opposition to Obamacare in Town mettings and on the streets to be coming from We the People, instead of from our representatives. Let the GOP produce ads and actually place them in major time slots on the MSM, and make speeches in Congress and actually try to defeat the legislation there.
I think this people’s movement is incredibly inspiring and invigorating to our party. I am very proud of so many people who have taken the time out of their busy lives to exercise their fundamental constitutional rights of freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to petition our government. And the anti-American responses from Obama, Pelosi, some of their supporters and the MSM are driving their poll numbers down further and further.
I really believe the power of ordinary individual Americans can win this for all of us.

I guess what I am seeing from many of my democratic friends and what I see pounded day after day that effectively demonizes Republicans is the social issues.
I think that we could reach out and embrace a lot more of society being more creative with our messages so that they don’t scare off a woman who believes in many core principles of the conservative movement but does not want to be condemned because she wants the right to have an abortion.
I believe there are many gay people that are in the same situation.My brother being one of them.I don’t support gay marriage or the lifestyle but concentrate on what we do have in common and make sure that they feel welcome and part of the family.
The democratic party has been very successful in being against gay marriage by it’s leadership but concentrating on other issues to bring them on as supporters and voters(I know that much of this is lying to them,but that could be used against them to).
Majority of Americans support Republican core issues like a strong military,low taxes,less government,strong family unity.
You are right that a lot of the base would be mad if we did not go straight for the throat on Abortion and issues like gay marriage.
Maybe after 4 years of Obama, they will loosen up a little bit.
We can certainly be more creative in how we address these issues to not shut out people that probably share many of the same values but don’t want to be the red headed step child because they are pro-choice or gay.
We blew it with the black community when the vast majority of them were Republican supporters until we choose not to take their votes seriously and allowed the democrats to buy them off with social programs.
I would love to see some of the Republican leadership blasting away on the airwaves at the unbelievable actions of the democrats in beating down a black man in the street.
These are the kinds of events that liberals blast from the rooftops in demonizing Republicans.
These are the kinds of events that will make black Americans and independents question who they are supporting.
These are the kinds of events that seriously erode support of the current leadership if video is played 24/7 with Republican leadership demanding the democrats give answers as to why their supporters are engaging in hate crimes.
But if it is left to the press to address,it will be ignored and excused by idiots like Brooks and Krugman.
Republicans in the House and the Senate could act like they give a dam# about the man in the street and I think it would go a long way.

In my opinion, no. Trig and “retard” were never overtly or specifically linked. However, an inference was there, and some took offense to AP’s use of that word, while others did not.
Having worked and lived with people who have mild to severe cognitive disabilities, I can be very sensitive to their mistreatment and mislabeling, as I know they come with a wide spectrum of cognitive skills and deficiencies, as well as in the areas of emotional and moral development. And people without disabilities also come in a wide spectrum of abilities and deficiencies. So, when that term is used, I sometimes cringe a bit. However, the reason such people are considered disabled is because they do indeed have deficiencies in certain mental skills and are retarded in certain development, regardless of how wonderful they may be otherwise. So, I don’t consider the use of that term to be offensive, except in certain situations, which this was not.
But, judge for yourself.

I don’t listen to Rush all that often, but I did happen to hear the part of his program when he talked about this. And he is absolutely correct here. Pelosi is the one who started the whole clusterfark and if Brooks does not know that then he is full of it. I mean really, we have been listening to the left pitch these hissy fits for years, they get a little bit of it back and all they can is complain.

I tend to think that the reality doesn’t make too much of a difference. Opening sentence from an editorial in today’s Washingington Examiner:
‘Liberals struggle to govern because no one has found a way to be powerful and oppressed at the same time.’
In other words, Democrats need to be the victim even when they are the architects of soul-crushing oppression. They’ve never learned to work in a bipartisan manner and they don’t intend to start now. Too much of what makes up the Democrat psyche is tied to demonizing anybody that doesn’t agree with their agenda. The hissy fits at town halls and from idiots like Pelosi all come out of this character flaw in the party.

I remember I used to think Brooks was smart back when he was the only conservative on TV on McNeil/Lehrer. I was so glad to see anyone who had any conservative view.
And I don’t get the Times so I’ve never known his writing, but I did question his smarts and his conservativism when I saw him in an interview on ‘David and David’ with David Gergan(?) prior to the election and Brooks said he had talked with Obama and thought he was smart enough not to act rashly or mess up our foreign policy or generally screw up the country.
I haven’t seen him say anything smart or insightful since.

Brooks didn’t do his homework again…. what a shocker.
The more I see and read of Brooks the more and more convinced I become that he is just dumb or at the very least lazy.
