Video: Carnahan attempts to explain “right-wing assault” comment

posted at 9:56 am on August 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

After his town-hall meeting, Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-MO) decried the “assault” on his constituent meetings by right-wing activists. Jamie Allman, a St., Louis talk-show host, attended Carnahan’s press conference the next day and asked Carnahan to explain why the only people arrested for assault at his town-hall meeting were ObamaCare supporters — specifically, union thugs who assaulted opponents of the health-care reform plan. Suddenly, Carnahan got a lot more universal in his accusations:

It “got out of control on both sides”? Did anyone from the opposition start cracking heads at that rally? They may have been loud and angry about the government essentially nationalizing 15% of the private economy, but until the unions began showing up to these rallies, there hadn’t been any violence at all. The real assaults came from Obama’s supporters in the unions, called into action by the administration when it saw its signature legislation being ripped on every television station in every city.

Politicians like Carnahan want people to be quiet and politely allow them to pass bills without reading them that eliminates choice and competition in the marketplace. Maybe they should look for another line of work instead.

“Back Door” Carnahan didn’t have a clue about what was going on outside because he scurried out the back door like the coward he is.

labwriter on August 8, 2009 at 9:59 AM

What a lame reply. What was interesting to me was the persistence of the questioner, who sounded a lot more relaxed about asking follow-up pointed questions than 90% of the reporters working on TV today do.

Good for him. And it led to an excellent follow-up question from a GOP member.

BillaryMcBush on August 8, 2009 at 10:04 AM

This was another bad idea from the Left that is going to backfire. As I have said before, they can glad hand the Washington press all they want to but locally the reporters and the constituents are neighbors. Even if they lean left themselves, they are not likely to allow their community to be maligned for some politician that blows into town a couple of times a year. Also, this could be a chance to get national coverage.

Russ, where did you get that suit? What are you trying for, that Huey Long look? Everyone knows Russ is the beneficiary of political royalty. If not for his dad, Russ would not be anywhere near Congress. The guy asking the questions, Jamie Allman should be the Congressman from that district. Jamie would stomp Russ in a fair election. Jamie, my offer to contribute to your campaign still stands. You will never get a better shot at running and making a real difference. Russ is toast unless we run another hack against him.

flyoverland on August 8, 2009 at 10:05 AM

Hey Ed, you need to check out Gateway Pundit on this. Jamie Allman CRASHED this “press conference” because Carnahan had only invited certainly friendly reporters that he knew would report his propaganda as straight news. So now we have Congressman holding invitation-only “town halls” and then calling “invitation-only” press conferences to try to explain what went wrong at their staged “town halls.”

And they say WE are the ones doing the “astroturfing!”

Unbelievable.

They really need to knock off the over-controlled messaging going on. When everyone has to join in and call the opponents thugs, then it’s inevitable that it’ll be the SEIU who gets arrested for thuggery. That’s the law of logic. All generalizations are untrue.

It would be nice to think that if this turd goes through, they’ll all be booted out on their sorry asses come the next election, but like that Hannan fellow on the Beck thread says…once it’s in place, you’re never going to get rid of it. After all the hoohah and celebration by the big media about the wonderful use of “new technology” by the left during the last election cycle and in the years leading up to it, this is an example of the new technology explosion biting the left on the butt when they didn’t expect it.

Aside from the use of the internet to help motivate people to attend the Town Halls — in the same way sites like Kos, MoveOn, HuffPo, etc. used it to movtivate anti-war turnout — the ability to both record and post video of what actually happened at the events denies the left their spin. You know Carnahan and any other liberal Democrat wanting to vote for Obamacare would stick like glue to the story that “Right Wing Mobs” were the ones causing the violence at the meetings if it wasn’t for the ability not just to shoot the video, but to get it disseminated widely over the internet and to the few regular media sites that actually aren’t shilling for the White House on the issue.

If Obama’s going to sent SEIU thugs out to harass his opponents whenever they disagree with him, he better be ready to start shutting down websites and confiscating hundreds of video phones to keep the truth away from the public. And if they’re willing to do that, then we really are into Hugo Chavez territory.

While I don’t think this is a bad idea, they need to be careful in elevating Mr. Gladney to hero status. In an interview I saw he is unemployed and just trying to profit on a gathering to sell his merchandise. I applaud his initiative but we know what can happen to people that the Right stand up for. I would hate for this man to suffer more because he was trying to take care of his family.

kelley in virginia on August 8, 2009 at 10:22 AM

This healthcare plan is so odious that even the European health care plans look good. Because the elderly and near elderly are so much affected by this I can’t understand why the Dems ever thought that they could do this cram down with ease. Yet, looking at Steny Hoyer’s face in that well known video it is amazing that he thought he could. He was indcredulous at first and then that was replaced by a look of fear. They actually thought this was a good idea that they thought they could sell.

Now Sarah is calling it EVIL, which it is and used the that two word phrase DEATH PANEL. That had to hurt, big time. Every day that goes by you get an unguard look into the Democrat mind. It isn’t pretty. They continue to do so much damage, but slowly the American public is starting to understand.

Reform in the press has to start somewhere. According to the laws of supply and demand, if there is a demand for something, somebody will supply it. I think there is an increasing demand for honest reporting, and a decreasing demand for the slanted excuses for reporting we’ve been getting. There’s money to be made for whoever steps in to meet the demand.

It “got out of control on both sides”?

Welllllllll ooooooooooooof ccccccccccourse it was both sides.

Since there were no incidents of violence until the OBama administration called out it’s followers to start “hitting back”(when did the tea party participants hit anybody??) and
“get in their faces” it only takes typical liberal pretzel logic to deduce that “both sides” are at fault.

Completely stuck on stupid.

liberals pretzel logic:

“Dissent is Patriotic” when a Republican is in the White House.

“Dissent is Racist” when a democrat is in the White House
.

The only people beating down black men in the streets are liberals, not the AARP “mobsters” that the democrats are hiding under their beds from.

Watching that video of the democrats beating down a black man for daring to have an opinion leads me to believe their Klansman Senator Byrd must be back to his KKK recruiting activities.

Where is Sharpton?

Where is Jesse?

Where is the NAACP?

Where are all the headlines at huffpo,Kos,and other liberal blogs denouncing this racist mob mentality coming from democratic party.

Where is Matthews?

Where is Maddow and Olberman with 24/7 coverage of the democratic trip down memory lane of beating down black people in the streets simply because they want their voices to be heard.

Come on Cnn…you should be able to devote a whole episode of “being black in America” to this racial treachery.

Come on Couric,Williams,Fox,MSNBC,NYTimes,WaPo,LA Times…..get with it,this is the streets of Selma all over again.

Where is all the moral outrage from the culturally superior crowd?

Where is the outrage from the “Any means necessary” crowd.

Where is the outrage from the “no justice no peace” crowd.

Where is the outrage from “We will over come” crowd.

Come on liberals, somebody’s chicken’s have to be coming home to roost on this one.

I guess liberals must be on outrage overload getting so worked up over ivy league Gates yelling about how oppressed he is because a white, black, and hispanic cop responded to a possible burglary call in a city with a black mayor,in a state with a black Governor, overseen by a Black President.

Word to liberals,

Don’t think for a second that millions of Americans are not watching to see the difference and selective outrage concerning how the beating down of a black man on film by democratic supporters is being played out in the media and by democratic supporters.

This administration is losing credibility at an astonishing rate and one of the main themes is “we don’t believe what Obama has to say” coming just 6 months into his Presidency is setting this administration up for epic fail.
The typical pathetic hypocrisy and selective morality concerning the beating down of Russ Carnahan will add to this significantly.

“Smart power” what a joke.

Baxter Greene on August 8, 2009 at 10:50 AM

Power is the only thing Demoncrats want. The only way they are going to maintain that power is by taking is away from you piece by piece, under the guise of being a legitimate law.

Let’s get back to basics. Vote for the person you think can actually do what you want them to. Break down the task of an elected representative. Uphold and protect the Constitution of the U.S. It is a simple job, really.

Go to D.C. and represent. Their primary job is to do nothing more that sit there and wait for their constituents to tell them about an issue that concerns them. Then listen to what other representatives have to say about that issue (is this a localized matter or is it really a National problem).

If the issue is localized solve it locally, if it a problem being experienced nationally, then look at laws/rules that exist and enforce them. If a new rule is required propose one that addresses that problem and nothing more (no riders or amendments that are not relevant to the issue) vote to determine if the majority of the public. In their spare time they should be reviewing all of the laws that are on the books and determine if they are still necessary and repeal or update so they can take advantage of new technologies, or paradigms.

The bottom line is they are to represent U.S. not repress U.S.

They were sent in as enforcers

Dennis Rivera, the New York labor leader and chairman of the service employees’ health care arm, was already overseeing a Washington “war room” operating nearly 24/7 to track all health-care related activity across the country

Now, in “unleashing the purple people,” as Ramona Oliver, a spokeswoman for the union, put it, the union wants to “challenge the radical fringe” that is disrupting the town hall meetings. It plans to ask everyone attending the meetings to sign a pledge that they will engage in “civil” dialogue.

“We’re not trying to escalate a confrontation,” Ms. Oliver said. “

Our members aren’t there to talk to the crazies

. We want to ensure that a conversation takes place and that members are able to hear from their constituents.”

Does anyone expect that union involvement in the town hall meetings will lower the decibel level? After all, Mr. Sweeney’s memo was accompanied by a blistering attack from Richard Trumka, secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO, against the “corporate-funded mob rule,” an attack that seemed designed to fire up the unions.

Here is a turd that really needs to be flushed

U.S. Rep. Brian Baird faced a deluge of criticism Thursday for his decision not to hold live town hall meetings on health reform and for his Wednesday comparison of disruptive anti-health-reform demonstrators with Nazis and murderers.

In Wednesday conversations with the Olympian and Columbian, Baird said he’s holding “telephone town halls” instead of live meetings to avoid an “ambush” by people with a “lynch-mob mentality” and “close to Brown Shirt tactics.”

Baird stuck to his rhetorical guns Thursday.

He invites civil disagreements over health reform, he said.

But Baird said a “coordinated national effort” to disrupt public meetings with shouts and demonstrations, which he said Republican leaders were “egging on,” was reminiscent of the kinds of things that drove Timothy McVeigh to bomb the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995.

“He believed himself to be a patriot fighting against an oppressive government,” Baird said of McVeigh, whose act killed 168.

Calling Americans that have a right to know what is being done with THEIR money a bunch of “mobsters” and “right wing extremist” (by the way,go through Instapundit’s well documented coverage of the Tea Parties and you will see that they contain many democrats and independents) has only thrown fuel on an already raging fire.

When I got involved in protesting the Sheehan/code pink/answer/ anti-war marches, most of the civilians like myself were furious with the bias in the press and the outrageous conduct of the liberal groups concerning our Soldiers and their mission.

The more they called our Soldiers “war criminals” and vandalized recruitment centers, the angrier we got and the bigger the counter protest got.

Melanie Morgan, Gathering of Eagles,Gold Star and Blue star moms organizations did very well and we were over 40,000 strong in April of 2006 (Iraq war was extremely un-popular then, showing just how well the pro-military groups did in organizing).

We all need to get involved at this level locally and as I understand, nationally, with a 9/12 march in Washington.

We will not quit

we will fight.

This goes beyond disgusting, and to think, now, the idiots are calling for telephone townhalls. I have been using the telephone for months trying to give these jerks my opinion. So, don’t expect me to express myself on a phone.

Carnahan: “I only know what I have read.”

Coming from a Lazy Congress that doesn’t even read the bills, this means very little.

I wonder what he plans on doing after he gets voted out of office. Mr. Carnahan: You should call your friend Andy Stern at SEIU. Maybe you can join the Purple Shirt League. Then you can go prancing about Oz with your friends, singing:

We represent the Purple Shirt League
The Purple Shirt League, the Purple Shirt League
And as members of the Purple Shirt League
We’ll make sure you stay the fuck shut up

There is one question I have been asking and that we should all be asking of all liberals who post on any blog or forum. This question should also be put to all representatives and officials you come in contact with:

Do you condemn the beating of Kenneth Gladney that was carried out in St. Louis by SEIU members and pro-Obama healthcare supporters?

Accept only a straight-up Yes or No answer. Do not let them get away with any evasion, equivocation, or weaseling.

That question should be the first question from our lips.

AnninCa.
Thats the spirit our founding fathers had. NOT! What a cowardly thing to say. That is just what BHO and his goons want you to do. Aren’t you the same mensa that said Regan was not a great communicater and that you were not surprised by his disease? You are not the one to be giving advice to anyone. When we are dealing with wolves we don’t send in the sheep!

Well, I wouldn’t go to any political event where the potential for violence is obvious. I even stayed away during the election, since it appeared to me that Obamafans were all too ready to bully and incite. Maybe had I been born in “Founding Father” days, I would have been one to pen essays rather than actually pick up a musket and go charging the crowds.

*haha

Yes, I condemn it totally, 100%, without hesitation.

Carnahan has now lost his focus on serving his constituents so remember what a good job his is doing for you in next election.

Power is the only thing Demoncrats want. The only way they are going to maintain that power is by taking is away from you piece by piece, under the guise of being a legitimate law.

This reminds me of a quote on some shirts I am having made.

This is on the front:

This is on the back:

With this quote under it:

The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of “liberalism,” they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”

– Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944, and 1948.

We can’t let this happen to our Country.

Baxter Greene on August 8, 2009 at 11:13 AM

Jumpy, indeed. Frankly, I wouldn’t have anything to do with any of these townhalls. There’s entirely too much anger and potential for violence.

Nobody I know would show up to these things at this point, unless they are ready to rumble.

One of the most unfortunate elements of the St. Louis political scene is that the local paper, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, is a left wing propaganda machine that slants all news towards the liberal line. Here are some examples of how they reported the news of the event in the Sunday edition;

“While six people were arrested in St. Louis County on Thursday, a scuffle ended a Tampa, Fla., town hall meeting the same night featuring protesters on both sides of the health care reform debate.” No mention of most of them being SEIU members.

“Recent gatherings have featured protesters on both sides of the health care issue. In St. Louis County, members of the Service Employees International Union were present when the Thursday melee broke out, and the AFL-CIO this week announced plans to send members to public gatherings in 50 congressional districts this month.”

“But much of the impetus for protest comes from conservative groups and staunch opponents of health care reform proposals advancing in Washington.”

“Todd Gitlin, a sociologist and former liberal activist whose books have analyzed protest movements, said he is surprised by the speed with which the recent protests have taken shape. Whether they come from left or right on the political spectrum, he said, movements usually escalate slowly. “What is remarkable here is that this went from zero-to-60 just like that,” Gitlin said. “If supporters of health care reform are smart, they will evoke a backlash against those people.”

“Six people, including P-D reporter, arrested at Carnahan meeting”

“MEHVILLE — St. Louis County police arrested six people, including a Post-Dispatch reporter, during a demonstration Thursday evening outside a forum on aging called by U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan, D-St. Louis.

Two of the people were arrested on suspicion of assault, one of resisting arrest and three on suspicion of committing peace disturbances, police say.”

(No mentiion of SEIU)

“In a prepared statement released Friday morning, Carnahan said: “Sadly we’ve seen stories about disrupters around the country, and we have a handful of them here in Missouri. Instead of participating in a civil debate, they have mobilized with special interests in Washington who have lined their pockets by overcharging Americans for a broken health care system.”

“I will continue to engage with constituents that I am honored to represent in Congress and fight to achieve long-overdue health insurance reform in our country,” Carnahan said.”

One of those arrested was Brian Matthews, 34, of St. Louis city, who works as a rehabber and previously worked on a campaign for a Texas statehouse candidate.

“I feel like it was a bull rush,” Matthews said. “It all came from behind.”

Matthews said he had been inside the forum because he is in favor of a public option for health care. He had attended with a friend, a 51-year-old woman. After it was over, they were walking outside and had a run-in with a man who was trying to videotape them. Matthews said that man from from the GOP. They reported the man to a police officer, who seemed uninterested, Matthews said.

As the pair walked to their car, they saw a man on the street who looks like he had been assaulted. Police surrounded him.

“My friend took pictures,” Matthews said, “and an officer told her not to. She contested that.”

Matthews said he and his friend walked away, arm in arm. The officer followed them, and Matthews friend exchanged words with the officer, Matthews said.

“I can’t tell you how many police officers charged us from behind,” Matthews said. “I was pushed to the ground by one. I was pushed into the back of somebody who was walking away.”

Matthews said he was told he was arrested for interference. His friend was maced “after she was subdued by the police,” Matthews said. She vomited on the side of the road, then later vomited more in the police car, he said.

Kenneth Gladney, 38, a conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with “Don’t tread on me” printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was awaiting treatment for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack.

“It just seems there’s no freedom of speech without being attacked,” he said.

Members of the local Tea Party Coalition, a movement that has emerged to counter Obama’s policies, had urged their members to attend Carnahan’s forum, which in turn spurred Democrats to establish a strong presence.

Inside the gathering, while speakers stuck to aging issues, they were often interrupted by yells from audience members who wanted to shift the focus to health care.

“This isn’t even close to civil,” said Steve Belosi, 52, of Lake Saint Louis, commenting on the crowd. “The rudeness was beyond compare.”

Added Joyce Flecke, 70, of south St. Louis County: “A complete waste of time.”

Other recent Carnahan appearances, including one earlier this week on the Cash for Clunkers program, have drawn similar protests. And last week, hundreds turned out to voice their opinions on reforms to the staff of Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.

Carnahan issued a statement after the Thursday night’s forum, saying: “Sadly we’ve seen stories about disrupters around the country, and we have a handful of them here in Missouri. Instead of participating in a civil debate, they have mobilized with special interests in Washington who have lined their pockets by overcharging Americans for a broken health care system.”

The St. Louis protests are part of the increasingly vocal debate across the country.

In the week since the House began its break, several town hall-style meetings have been disrupted by demonstrators. These episodes have drawn widespread media attention, and Republicans have seized on them as well as polls showing a decline in support for Obama and his agenda as evidence that public support is lacking for his signature legislation.”

Thank God for Hot Air and other valuable sources for true and complete news coverage. Without it, many city newspapers would be misleading citizens across the country.

I am glad to see that.

I will gladly buy you an ipod that has many of Obama’s speeches on it like he gave the queen if this racial beat down is given half the coverage and attention from the MSM and liberal groups that Gates got.

If the bar is set by liberals that practically any dissent of the President is now racist, then this action must be off the charts on the their moral outrage meters.

I am betting that it will be covered with pathetic moral equivalence or simply ignored.

There’s no shortage of stupid in this world. *haha

I’ll go further, on the issue of Obama’s clear connection to the Unions, it’s dangerous. In CA, our primary problem are the unions. CA Dems offered huge pension goodies and increased benefits when the state had a surplus. Naturally, that’s not negotiable now. All the Dems are in the pocket of those unions.

This is the direction Obama took with the GM bailout. With CA, he actually got an SEIU on the phone with the governor to threaten that if we dared to lower the wage scale of homecare workers (I’ll explain later) that he would deny CA stimulus bailout monies.

Now, SEIU covers home healthcare workers. Sounds reasonable, eh? Get this. If your spouse is aged, and you care for him at home? You get paid by the State. Moreover, you’re covered under SEIU plans.

Unbelievable.

So on this issue, I’m clearly NOT liberal. Unions are emerging as bullies in more ways than one with Obama’s encouragement. THIS to me is the real danger we face.

I do not believe Obama is a communist. I do not agree at all with conservatives on healthcare reform. I do not think he’s evil.

I do think the tack he’s taken is highly dangerous for the Country.

I oppose him.

However, Sarah’s ridiculous comment about healthcare leaves me cold, too.

AnninCA on August 8, 2009 at 11:30 AM

Hey, remember when Bush had a shoe thrown at him? Good times, good times.

Liberals live in perpetual fear that they will be subject to the same threats, hostility, and scorn to which they subject others.

Thank you. Yours is the first straight-up honest answer I’ve gotten to that question from anyone supporting Obamacare and/or the Left–although, from reading your posts, I would not categorize you as a “leftist”–you’re a bit more liberal on some issues than I, but I think it’s safe to say that we also have points in agreement and that at the end of the day we could agree to disagree and grab a post-debate beer together.
