Video: Carnahan attempts to explain “right-wing assault” comment

posted at 9:56 am on August 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

After his town-hall meeting, Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-MO) decried the “assault” on his constituent meetings by right-wing activists. Jamie Allman, a St., Louis talk-show host, attended Carnahan’s press conference the next day and asked Carnahan to explain why the only people arrested for assault at his town-hall meeting were ObamaCare supporters — specifically, union thugs who assaulted opponents of the health-care reform plan. Suddenly, Carnahan got a lot more universal in his accusations:

It “got out of control on both sides”? Did anyone from the opposition start cracking heads at that rally? They may have been loud and angry about the government essentially nationalizing 15% of the private economy, but until the unions began showing up to these rallies, there hadn’t been any violence at all. The real assaults came from Obama’s supporters in the unions, called into action by the administration when it saw its signature legislation being ripped on every television station in every city.

Politicians like Carnahan want people to be quiet and politely allow them to pass bills without reading them that eliminates choice and competition in the marketplace. Maybe they should look for another line of work instead.

Very chilling to watch a congressman actively participate in making our government something to fear. When “Prof.” Gates was given his special VIP treatment by a racial profiling specialist, even the Pres. could not contain his faux-outrage. But here we have real live examples of ordinary citizens being manhandled by thugs and goons working on behalf of the Democrat party and this administration, and all outrage from the left and media is gone. It’s as if nothing serious has happened, and it’s the fault of those assaulted in any case. We’re reaching a tipping point. But I guess we’ve seen it coming for awhile.

JiangxiDad on August 8, 2009 at 11:34 AM

The Left is not interested in debate. What is happening with these union thugs is unprecedented in American history and the MSM are rolling over and playing dead.

This is frightening.

Thank you. Yours is the first straight-up honest answer I’ve gotten to that question from anyone supporting Obamacare and/or the Left–although, from reading your posts, I would not categorize you as a “leftist”–you’re a bit more liberal on some issues than I, but I think it’s safe to say that we also have points in agreement and that at the end of the day we could agree to disagree and grab a post-debate beer together.

I’ll take a glass of chardannay. :)

As usual, after much consideration, you reveal yourself to be dumb as as stump. Generalizations are a method of organizing information. Your link to “hasty” generalizations changes what you said. It’s your inability to do things like generalize and stereotype and other such thoughts that your liberal friends try to make illegal that prevent you from ever knowing right from wrong. You exist as a perpetual child, in spite of your advanced age.

JiangxiDad on August 8, 2009 at 11:54 AM

Baxter Greene on August 8, 2009 at 11:47 AM

I saw those pictures yesterday, incredibly sweet and very telling. Some brilliant commenter on a thread yesterday noted that the “protesters”/”mob” looked like a Matlock Fan Club. I loved that and I think it is so obviously true that the Democrats in general and Mr. Obama specifically are going to have a lot of problems with this tactic. And now most members of Congress are running from their constituents. I don’t know how you get reelected on these profiles of courage.

Liam on August 8, 2009 at 12:01 PM

It has become more and more obvious that these Democrats in Congress don’t give a rat about representing the people. They’re experts at cushioning themselves.

Again: the people are waking up to realize that the Democrats don’t truly represent The People. The Democrats are not governing with the consent of the governed – at least, they’re showing that they couldn’t care less about the consent of the governed.

But throwing them out of office won’t be easy.

We must remember that Democrats follow the rule of votes from Uncle Joe Stalin: “It’s not the vote that counts, but who counts the votes.” Many Democrat Secretaries of State in many states (where they can accept every fraudulent vote at will and throw legitimate votes into the trash can) are in their seats because of another Uncle – George Soros – an evil man if there ever was one.

If we want to throw Democrats out to the streets, we must throw the Secretaries of State first. And use the best disinfectant: Sunlight. Lots of it.

Good points.

I agree with the union problems you stated and have heard this from many people moving to NC from CA.and NY.

I do not believe Obama is a communist. I do not agree at all with conservatives on healthcare reform. I do not think he’s evil.

I think Obama clearly has a socialist agenda.
Will he run around like Stalin…no…but his take over of the car companies, banks, class warfare, only solution is to raise taxes on higher earners and increase spending for special interest, stifling of debate, delusions of grandeur about himself and his abilities are just a few of the reasons I see this.
None of this is how America became an economic success or does any of this reflect capitalism.

His associations with marxist his whole life bears this out also.
Ayers/Bernadean, his writings reveal significant influences in his life like the communist poet,Obama had a top campaign advisor that was an admitted communist, campaign offices with communist flags on the walls….on…and….on…and…on Obama in his writings and associations has admitted marxist that he admits himself were heavy influences in his life.

I don’t think it is necessary but I can link these associations if you need me to.

There is way to much smoke here to deny the fire of marxist influences that Obama had throughout his life that are showing through in his policies now.

Baxter Greene on August 8, 2009 at 12:06 PM

newton on August 8, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Your first statement is correct… and does not go to the depth of the entire problem.

The fundamental ideal of WHAT we want government to be is different between the Oligarchy of the Parties, and the Electorate.

The Washington Insiders believe that the Government is there to care for us, and thus to tell us what to do, for our own good (and their perpetuation of power)…. while America was based on a very limited Government, who was essentialy nothing more than a Referee.

Its a fundamental difference in worldview… but its not being talked about by the Pundits in this manner… they don’t get it yet…

The pundits just see anger, and don’t understand the basis of it… they don’t understand the Little Girl with the sign saying “keep your hands off my piggybank” as what it is… a cry for help in a debate about the fundamental NATURE of Government.

“In a prepared statement released Friday morning, Carnahan said: “Sadly we’ve seen stories about disrupters around the country, and we have a handful of them here in Missouri. Instead of participating in a civil debate, theygoons representing SEIU at the beck and call of their union and instigated into action by Democrat operatives including President Obama and Mr. Emanual and Mr. Messina have mobilized with special interests in Washington like the taxpayer supported ACORN and union PACs who have lined their pockets by overchargingbleeding Americans dry and whining that their fellow citizens are responsible for their health care for a broken health care system.

“I will continue to engage with constituents that I am honored to represent in Congressthat support my campaign with lots of funding and fight to achieve long-overdue health insurance reform in our country by making the health care sector and a profitable and useful business bankrupt because it is useful to my party to demonize capitalism in the interests of promoting BIG GOVERNMENT,” Carnahan said.”

onlineanalyst on August 8, 2009 at 9:48 PM

Looks like the SEIU is drawing shame to the Party.

seven on August 8, 2009 at 9:57 PM

What I find most disturbing is that the Democrats making the charges that the gatherings of irate citizens have been mobilized by insurance companies (the “special interests” that these weasels allude to) or the Republicans are accepted by the media and reported as such. No one in the press challenges those Democrats making these claims to offer evidence. No one in the press alludes to Messina’s remarks to the Democrats in Congress. No one in the press mentions the “special interests” that motivate the SEIU in supporting Obamacare nor how they were mobilized by the Democrats to be enforcers.

In a related topic, wasn’t it the SEIU that barred a number of Hillary supporters from joining their caucus in Nevada during the primaries? Is my memory of events correct?

JiangxiDad on August 8, 2009 at 11:34 AM

Yes and what was tipping was not yet the American public
for all the angry citizens, what has tipped over was the leaders of the left who have lost fear of beating up their enemies in the flesh.

That is a truly big step. Instead of tricks behind the scenes they are losing the fear of breaking heads on camera.

The press is cooperating in the worst way, so the MSM has also lost fear. Perhaps due to declining audience the audience no longer matters, just sponsors and their license from DC.

The Left has lost their fear of crossing the line. I assume they will escalate, and try to plant fake opposition voices in future town halls so they can discredit the other side and justify the beatings.

At the same time, they are going after abuses at Gitmo

I am waiting to see how they resolve this issue. They are stoking the opposition with their one shot attempt to hoodwink the public and now it will be hard to disassemble their lies.

Beat up grannie, she will kick your F—–
