Beeler on Astroturf through history

posted at 2:10 pm on August 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Washington Examiner editorial cartoonist Nate Beeler takes a look at the effort to label constituent dialogue as “astroturfing” or worse by the Left and the media (but I repeat myself).  What would Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, and Harry Reid have said to a group of Americans who insisted that the backbone of self-governance was an involved and informed electorate, with elected officials held accountable for their actions?  Beeler sees the triumvirate as resentful of those speaking Truth to Power — especially when they represent the latter and not the former:

Be sure to check out Nate’s blog for more of his excellent work, featured at the indispensable Examiner.

Jefferson would recognize a media bought and paid for.

It’s quite possible that Jefferson might think Pelosi, Reid, and O were agents for the British then dispose of them because of that. Hmmmmm……

Driefromseattle on August 8, 2009 at 2:18 PM

Jefferson wouldn’t recognize the country in it’s current state. I think he would be amazed that it has lasted as long as it has and would be wondering how we let the government get so powerful and out of control.

Guardian on August 8, 2009 at 2:18 PM

These Progressive libs actually believe that they possess larger brains than those of our Founding Fathers and most Americans today. They think that these framers of our country and Constitution were “flawed” and that in contrast, these liberals are more evolved. I think they prefer to blaze their own trail and reference these founders only when they want to sound “patriotic” for our votes.

Now if only Jefferson was saying “men” instead of “people”, it would be perfect :-)

Went to a Town Hall this am and I can tell you, the stereo typical left wing hippie throwbacks were there, as were the big guys in SEIU t-shirts. The rest of us were in Dockers, golf shirts, skirts and t’s – lots of JCPenney and Target. Not a lot of foreign cars in the lot either, unless you count the Subaru wagons with Obama stickers. Most of us on the right were astounded by the ordinariness of ourselves. We were expecting some larger than life NE bigwigs to fly in on choppers and serve croissants and lattes. No such luck – Dunkin’ Donuts all round.

Meanwhile, much of the press is diligently ignoring the fact that accusations of atroturfing are coming from an administration whose chief political strategist, Axelrod, is known as the king of astroturf.

This would be funny if it weren’t so pathetic and dangerous.

Why hasn’t Hotair run any articles on Axelrod’s specialty? Even Mother Jones and The Nation did stories, before, on Axelrod’s astroturfing. How about a little post on businessweek’s old article, The Secret Side of David Axelrod?

I’m curious how it’s not astroturfing when Obamacare supporters show up with signs with the Obama symbol pre-printed on them. Isn’t that the definition of astroturfing?

Plus, who is paying to bus these people in? Is anyone paying them to protest? If so, who? We need to start asking these kinds of questions… as well as fighting against the actual health “insurance” care reform whatever they decide to call it next.

At the McCain/Palin rally near Phila during the lead up to the election, I heard SEIU shirts talking about who sent them. Some were taking about being paid to be there. They were loud, rude, and broke the “no signs on sticks” code (think pointed sticks as weapons).

I could not help but notice that the completely incompetent Cynthia Tucker of Atlanta stated on Hardball that 45-65% of American citizens showing up at town hall meetings with their elected representatives are racists. Have you ever heard this dumb nitwit speak? Oh MY GOD! This is what you get with Affirmative Action. Let’s see here: 96% of blacks voted for The Messiah………..ok…………why? Gee it could not have been because he’s black could it? But if so – Gee again………isn’t that racism? And how many blacks hate or hated Bush simply because he’s white? Hmmm….how about Rev. Wright? I get so sick of Cynthia the imbecile Tucker – can’t they find her a job on Team Obama – say, sending out Memo’s to make sure all the Czars are paying Federal Taxes or something that required 16 hours of work a day…………

Really, it wasn’t the cloths that Boxer was thinking about when she made her now famous “well dressed” comment. She was actually thinking “bathed”, but her “NAACP” moment last week has her side stepping her own first condescensions in favor more general and less specific insults. She insulted the cloths because they are not possible voters.

You know, one of the sad parts is that Nate actually had to add in the names Pelosi and Reid, because most of the American people are too divorced from politics to know who they are.

Whose side is the health Industry on?

1. The Trillion dollars saving myth Obama announced with much fanfare but was later debunked:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) June 9th — President Obama will announce Monday that he has secured the commitment of several industry groups to do their part to rein in the growth in health care costs.

This pledge from the private sector could reduce the growth in health care spending by 1.5 percentage points a year, for a savings of $2 trillion over 10 years, a letter from the groups will promise, according to a senior administration official. Overall, it could amount to a 20% reduction in the growth of health care spending.Six trade associations representing unions, hospitals, insurers and the drug industry have signed on to the commitment.

2. There is the attempts by the health insurance industry to work with the Obama admin:

One of the main architects of the friendly approach, Karen M. Ignagni, the industry’s chief lobbyist, personally pledged to President Obama that insurers would not stand in the way of a sweeping overhaul this time.

For a while, it seemed to be working — until recently, when the insurance industry re-emerged as Washington’s favorite target. “Villains,” Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker, called health insurers. And Mr. Obama derided the industry for pocketing “windfall profits.”

Taken aback, Ms. Ignagni, the 55-year-old chief executive of the trade group America’s Health Insurance Plans, wondered on Tuesday why insurers were being singled out when, in her view, they had accepted that change was necessary.

3. The Pharmaceutical industry just today announced plans to spend 150 million dollars in FAVOR of Obama’s plans:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s drugmakers stand ready to spend $150 million to help President Barack Obama overhaul health care this fall, according to numerous officials, a staggering sum that could dwarf attempts to derail his chief domestic priority.

The White House and allies in Congress are well aware of the effort by Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a somewhat surprising political alliance, given the industry’s recent history of siding with Republicans and the Democrats’ disdain for special interests. The campaign, now in its early stages, includes television advertising under PhRMA’s own name and commercials aired in conjunction with the liberal group, Families USA.

4. Then there is the AMA which although in opposition to the Public plan has come out in favor of many of Obama’s goals:

July 27th — The American Medical Association has thrown its support behind a Democratic national health system reform measure making its way toward the House floor, so far the first comprehensive bill that addresses Medicare physician pay.

On July 16, the AMA announced it would support America’s Affordable Health Choices Act, comprehensive legislation officially introduced two days earlier by House Democratic leaders and closely based on a discussion draft unveiled a month before that. The three House committees with primary jurisdiction over health care moved quickly to approve the legislation for House consideration, with two of the panels passing their versions July 17.

If you were outside you truly missed nothing. She was asked some great questions and we were lectured to but no answers that deviated from the West Wing talking points. Very disappointing to see such “smart looking people” behaving so stupidly. (Pun unintended.) I got to ask a question and the dodging and weaving was reminiscent of an NBA final.

No need! He can keep his distance from that, unlike during the campaign, as he denied he was doing with his “dollar bill” comment.

For example, in addition to the utterly baseless, but eagerly solicited (by Chris Matthews) MSNBC Cynthia Tucker “estimate” of 45 – 65% racist make-up of protesters, many of Obama’s supporters are enthusiastically stoking that fire — like Oliver Willis, at his blog. (ht, Legal Insurrection).

Giving Too Much Credit

August 8, 2009 8:30 pm.

Steve Benen tries to understand just why wingnuts are so angry about health care reform. He doesn’t make bad points, but its so much simpler than that. We on the left think that rage has to be somewhat rational, for instance we raged about an unwarranted war. Why is wingnuttia so angry?

We elected a Democrat, and even worse, he’s black.
