WH: We’re not collecting names, we’re storing your e-mail addresses

posted at 11:02 am on August 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Robert Gibbs assured Jake Tapper that the new White House initiative to get people to snitch on their neighbors for dissenting on ObamaCare had nothing to do with collecting names.  Oh, no — that would not be Hope and Change!  Instead, it has everything to do with collecting our e-mails:

Asked about Cornyn’s letter on Thursday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said, “nobody is collecting names.”

The blog and tips email was because, Gibbs said, “we have seen, and as I’ve discussed from this podium, a lot of misinformation around health care reform. Some of it I think spread purposely. We have used on many occasions the Web site to debunk things that are simply not true. We ask people if they have questions about health care reform and about what they’re hearing about its affects on them, to let us know and we’d provide them information to show that that wasn’t true.”

Continued Gibbs: “but nobody is collecting names.”

But …

When asked, Gibbs acknowledged that the White House is required by law to save all correspondence it receives.

“Obviously, the National Archives documents correspondence with the White House,” he said.

That’s besides the point, for the most part.  They didn’t set up a White House e-mail address and an infrastructure to review the traffic it receives in order to just give the National Archives even more work to do.  The National Archives does not require a stimulus package.

The administration clearly wants to activate millions of snoops across America to get tips on what people say about Obama and his health-care plan.  One can parse whether that amounts literally to “taking names,” but its design explicitly demonstrates a desire for the White House to track its political opposition.  If all Obama wanted was a chance to respond to the debate, it could keep its own tabs on arguments made on Capitol Hill during the Congressional actions on ObamaCare bills.  They can also easily keep an eye on lobbying groups and their public campaigns without creating a vast network of snitches to do it.

Gibbs’ answer is disingenuous.  The better question is why the White House created its snitch line in the first place.

Update: The boss has more on the people who run Snitch Center at the White House.

If the administration wants to clear up misconceptions, they already have the means to do it without collecting snitch information.

Intimidation at the very, very least. These scumbags know what ‘taking names’ means to people, even if they are only hinting at it. They want people to believe that if they speak out against the efforts of this pack of rats to convert this country as quick as possible to a socialist then communist regime that they will be targeted in many ways, but ultimately they want people to shut up in fear for the loss of their freedom or even their lives.

JetBoy on August 7, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Tapper is really doing a great job. He consistently asks tough questions.

This plan reminds me of the methodology used in the campaign, to combat the rumors about Obama being Muslim, etc. However, to try this now? It’s really a bad, bad PR move for a sitting president to do this.

What cracks me up is the statement “purposely deceiving people.” Who writes anything on the net that isn’t purposeful? That’s just plain silly as a rationale for this.

Peggy Noonan’s article on this debacle sums up my opinion totally. Painting people as “brown shirts” for objecting was a completely stupid strategy.

I personally am for public option and do think a lot of bad information is out there on this. But whose fault is that?

Dems let insurance reps get ahead of them with Medicare people. Why wasn’t the strategy to put people out in the community to offer information sessions, etc.?

It’s been badly mishandled. It’s now led to even violence.

My opinion is that it could have been avoided. Nobody might have been able to change anyone’s mind on the topic, but the Dems blew the opportunity to make their case.

Now, it’s all about the “war.”

AnninCA on August 7, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Some of it I think spread purposely.

Uh, yeah, there is a purpose to the spread of information/counterpropaganda. Duh.

Too bad your narrow-minded administration doesn’t want to hear or understand what’s at the root of that purpose. If you just listened to the majority of your constituents, you, I and the rest of us could all have a nice relaxing August barbequeing in our back yards instead of grilling in our town halls.

You know what the truth is, that we are meant to be free, that we are smart, knowledgeable people who know what is right and what is wrong. They can not take that away – ever. I don’t think the administration is starting a hit list. That’s about as far out as calling the protesters organized by lobbyists. It’s pretty obvious when you look at who is protesting that they are anything but organized. And the WH isn’t compiling secret lists for nefarious reasons, either.

And that violence has come from the Left, it seems–right after Obama used terms that basically called out troops, so to speak.

Not only should have the Dems handled their case better, but to top that would have been not presenting a bill like this at all. The timing is bad, too. It’s all fishy, where seating at meetings is reserved and certain people are kept out. And tip-lines now, tacitly equating political opposition with police tip-lines used to solve criminal cases?

Everything Obama and the Dems are doing would tell me to not listen to them at all about anything after all this. But I already learned that lesson two months into Clinton’s first term.

Interesting how pro communists are starting to put comments on insignificant blogs such as my own.

Communist, utopian, only socialist long enough to get to communism.

We need a hunting season especially targeted to these people, I think we’re just about to get one too.
