Video: Where do sharp-dressed people congregate?

posted at 4:45 pm on August 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Ed Frank at Americans for Prosperity decided to do a little digging into Barbara Boxer’s contention that ObamaCare opposition came to town-hall meetings too well-dressed to have credibility as a grassroots movement. In this montage sent to the perfect piece of music, Frank shows clips from an Obama rally in support of his health-care reform just two days later, and discovers the sartorial splendor of the Left’s own supposed grassroots. And don’t forget to check the parking lot:

How many of those cars were American made, anyway?

off topic, but I wanted to get this out there:

Regarding the Pre-Existing whining point: PLEASE GO TO THESE WEBSITES.

For US high risk pools:
http://www.healthinsurance.org/risk_pools/

These are individual policies for people that do not, or cannot, get HI. They are Guaranteed Issue plans (i.e. they accept pre-existing conditions)

I chose two from red states: Texas and Nebraska. Texas’ is a PDF so I couldn’t copy/paste.

Texas:
http://www.txhealthpool.org/AppFolder/App&Cklst_Fill&Print_Form_V-3_Rev05-06-09.pdf

Go to page 9 for eligibility, similar to Nebraska (see below)

Nebraska:
http://www.nechip.com/eligibility.aspx

1. Be a legal Nebraska resident at least six months prior to application*; and
a. Have been rejected for health insurance coverage for medical reasons within the last six months from a Nebraska insurer; or
b. Have been offered health insurance coverage within the last six months which includes a restrictive rider limiting coverage for a preexisting medical condition; or
c. Have been refused health insurance coverage comparable to that available through CHIP or have been offered a comparable coverage at a higher premium within the last six months; or

2. Be a legal Nebraska resident;* and
a. Have an aggregate of at least 18 months prior creditable coverage, most recently under a group health plan, governmental plan or church plan; and
b. Not be eligible for another group health plan, Medicare or Medicaid, or have other health insurance coverage; and
c. Continuation coverage under COBRA or a similar program, if offered, has been exhausted, or COBRA or similar insurance is at a higher rate than CHIP; or …

For a $1,000 deductible policy:

$878/mo for a 50yo male smoker
$626/mo for a 50yo male non-smoker

$364/mo for a 50yo male smoker
$259/mo for a 50yo male non-smoker

They are not cheap, but they exist.

Nebraska 1a and 1b make those that are denied full coverage due to any medical condition eligible for the plan.
Nebraska Item 1c effectively puts a ceiling on individual rates. In other words, any citizen of Nebraska is eligible for the pool if they are quoted a premium that is higher than the pool’s premium – REGARDLESS OF REASON.

From Part 2 of the Nebraska Eligibility conditions it is clear the High Risk Polls are open to the unemployed and for the employed where the company does not offer coverage.

It would make infinitely more sense to allow for a premium sliding scale based on income THAN TO START FROM SCRATCH FOR 350,000,000

But now things are heating up, and Hot Air is starting to rise to the occassion. Fantastic!

I’m really glad. I started lurking here in late 2005 and registered here in mid-2006 when I finally caught an open registration. Those were heady days filled with great video’s, great guest bloggers, and meaningful informative posts leading up to the 2008 election.

Now it’s leading up to 2010, and 2012 is just around the corner. Refutation video’s like this and many of the other posts we’re getting now, filled with ‘see it with your own eyes and hear it with your own ears’ truth is just what we really need.

Then it’s up to us to spread the truth!

BadgerHawk on August 7, 2009 at 5:09 PM

Sarah Palin warned us about Obama during her convention speech. (I tend to watch it when I need a pep talk).

But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform – not even in the state senate.

This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word “victory” except when he’s talking about his own campaign. But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed … when the roar of the crowd fades away … when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot – what exactly is our opponent’s plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger … take more of your money … give you more orders from Washington … and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world. America needs more energy … our opponent is against producing it.

This is ludicrous. Barbara Boxer is trying to instigate class warfare – the real people don’t wear suits only the rich “plants in the audience” wear suits therefore anyone showing up at a town hall meeting in a suit is suspect. There are lots of good conservatives who may go to a town hall after work and wear their suit. They may drive a Lexus or a Merc and buy Apple products. They’re called capitalists and we want them. They’re the Good Guys! Isn’t that what this is all about? We don’t want socialism where the government decides what you wear, what you drive, what you eat, your health care and your carbon foot print. Unless you’re a government worker and then you can fly a taxpayer’s jet home for the weekend. Lets not start judging people by their clothes, cars and computers.

PattyJ on August 7, 2009 at 7:40 PM

I am reading Orwell’s 1984 (online at http://www.george-orwell.org, and very scary, really!) and I found this excerpt apropos to the current climate:

The aims of these three groups are entirely irreconcilable. The aim of the High is to remain where they are. The aim of the Middle is to change places with the High. The aim of the Low, when they have an aim — for it is an abiding characteristic of the Low that they are too much crushed by drudgery to be more than intermittently conscious of anything outside their daily lives — is to abolish all distinctions and create a society in which all men shall be equal. Thus throughout history a struggle which is the same in its main outlines recurs over and over again. For long periods the High seem to be securely in power, but sooner or later there always comes a moment when they lose either their belief in themselves or their capacity to govern efficiently, or both. They are then overthrown by the Middle, who enlist the Low on their side by pretending to them that they are fighting for liberty and justice. As soon as they have reached their objective, the Middle thrust the Low back into their old position of servitude, and themselves become the High. Presently a new Middle group splits off from one of the other groups, or from both of them, and the struggle begins over again. Of the three groups, only the Low are never even temporarily successful in achieving their aims. It would be an exaggeration to say that throughout history there has been no progress of a material kind. Even today, in a period of decline, the average human being is physically better off than he was a few centuries ago. But no advance in wealth, no softening of manners, no reform or revolution has ever brought human equality a millimetre nearer. From the point of view of the Low, no historic change has ever meant much more than a change in the name of their masters.

And then came Obama.

Califemme on August 7, 2009 at 7:45 PM

Who cares what people wear (besides BeatBoxer, of course)? I’d love to see a wide range of folks at the tea parties and town hall meetings. In fact, when I went to a July 4th tea party in Michigan I saw folks wearing everything from outfits that consisted of nothing but American flags head-to-toe, to men dressed in slacks and button-down shirts (it was a little too hot for suits). But in the end, clothes really have nothing to do with it.

I’d love to turn the screws on Boxer by having everybody show up in suits and ties at the next round of town halls and tea parties. Hey, why not tuxedos and evening gowns?

My California senators make me sick!

JoelD on August 7, 2009 at 8:40 PM

hmmm….Mr. Sheena wears a suit about once every two years and totally rocks it in a very imposing way. The last time he was decked out in the suit and shades, it was overheard, many times
“Who’s the mobster?”

“Who brought the Soprano?”

“When Sheena said we would get a chance to meet the family, I didn’t think she meant that kind!”

So maybe the next town hall is a good chance to break out the ol monkey suit again, and make the politicians shake a little bit….
