Video: SEIU activists try to set ObamaCare opponents straight

posted at 2:55 pm on August 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

After the President himself talked about getting in people’s faces when they oppose his policies and setting up snitch lines at the White House, the only shocker in this video is that it took so long for townhalls to turn violent. The SEIU showed up in t-shirted uniform to a townhall meeting for Rep. Russ Carnahan in St. Louis, apparently intent on demonstrating union tactics in organizing elections if Congress passes Card Check. The video below shows the immediate aftermath of the attack, including the arrest of one of the SEIU’s thugs:

His excuse? After being berated by a member of the crowd for attacking a black conservative for opposing ObamaCare, the union thug replied, “He attacked America!” The same goon made a threatening motion to the vocal witness, but perhaps thought better of it when he saw the camera. Police eventually responded and started arresting a number of people, including one reporter on the scene:

Kenneth Gladney, a 38-year-old conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with “Don’t tread on me” printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room of the St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was waiting to be treated for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face that he suffered in the attack. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack started.

“It just seems there’s no freedom of speech without being attacked,” he said.

Pay attention, America. This is a glimpse into the next three years of the Obama administration, at least using the same logic by which the Left accuses health-care reform opponents of “astroturfing”. If its policies get organized opposition, especially at events designed to allow for public debate, purple-shirted thugs will appear to crack heads and scare off the opposition.

And if nothing else, it’s a great look at how the unions will act once the secret ballot gets eliminated from organizing elections.

Problem for the thugs is that this isn’t Iran, where people just take it and take it from these types. If they aren’t careful this could lead to serious violence, especially at functions held in right-to-work states already suspicious of union goons. In real mobs, flash points form quickly, and people are going to get hurt if these a-holes don’t knock it off. Cooler heads need to step in soon.

I thought that’s what he said upon first watching, too, but if you’ll notice, in the seconds before he’s saying that Gladney “attacked a minister”. I think he may have just still been saying “a minister” rather than “America”. Wouldn’t surprise me, but that’s my guess.

SHAME on people who are denying who is responsible for this violence. SHAME on those who are blaming grandmothers and grandfathers for what is happening out there today.

This – right here – is the face of Obama and his Chicago politics, and if you “liberals” support it, you are as much to blame for it as he is.

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? After all, you knew ahead of time that those bluecaps were out at night for no good purpose. And you could be sure ahead of time that you’d be cracking the skull of a cutthroat. Or what about the Black Maria sitting out there on the street with one lonely chauffeur — what if it had been driven off or its tires spiked. The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!”

The President of the United States says the protesters against his policies are illegitimate, and encourages his supporters to physically intimidate them to shut them up and get them out of the way. Within hours SEIU thugs disrupt several public events, resulting in intimidation, injuries, and arrests.

The press says… nothing. The MSM says… nothing. The talking heads on network news say… nothing. The President of the United States asks for and provokes violent responses to citizen protests based on the fact that they disagree with him, and does so in public, on-record… and nobody in the media says anything about it, asks him anything about it, or reports on the inevitable outcome of it.

Yesterday the Seattle Times reorted as fact that the protests are “astroturfed”… reported that Obama talking point as fact, on the front page!

And today, after union thugs tried to do what the President of the United States urged them to do, break the law and commit assault for political purposes… today that joke of a newspaper had absolutely zero coverage of these events!

This is what happens when the press works for one party.

This is what happens when Community Organizing is practiced by the President of the United States… who as of this moment is guilty of incitement to criminal activity, and who in my mind is a disgrace.

One of the best lines I’ve ever read was from Gulag Archipelago where Solzhenitsyn describes the moment he was taken into custody.

I’m paraphrasing and not doing it any kind of justice, but he basically says, in that moment, what was thought to be impossible became crushing reality in a blinding and terrifying flash.

I don’t own the book and can never find the quote online, but I’ll give it a go.

Couldn’t find the Solzhenitsyn quote I wanted, but this one is good:

I hope that no one present will suspect me of offering my personal criticism of the Western system to present socialism as an alternative. Having experienced applied socialism in a country where the alternative has been realized, I certainly will not speak for it. The well-known Soviet mathematician Shafarevich, a member of the Soviet Academy of Science, has written a brilliant book under the title Socialism; it is a profound analysis showing that socialism of any type and shade leads to a total destruction of the human spirit and to a leveling of mankind into death.

But because I don’t want to pack my heat, should I not attend? No! There is safety in numbers, and other self defense tactics that can be utilised. Sometimes liberty means taking a risk, hopefully an educated and calculated one, but still there is a risk. It blows me away that attending a town hall should be viewed so aprehensively. I put my life on the line for my more than this against far more formidable opponents. They have no idea the kind of people they are messing with.

I’m not squeamish, though I am in the NG and don’t want you shooting me ; ) .

The first time one of these town halls gets out of control and a conservative is arrested and found with a knife, or tries to do something to an officer, any ground gained will be gone instantly.

One guy points at a thug and says, “You’re going to jail, buddy!” That’s the way it used to work, but we’ll see if this guy gets the same get out of jail card the Pennsylvania Black Panthers thugs got.

Then Kenneth Gladney takes the man to civil litigation and drain him financially. I’m sure SEIU will distance themselves from any criminal activities and a pro bono attorney would step forward for Gladney.

You’d be better off taking shockers/tasers and mace. That’s what I’m taking if I go.

Walk with a cane perhaps? just for style.

Arm yourselves with the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bible and a whole lot of praying.

Those will get this Glorious Cause moving in the right direction.

SEIU ? What does it mean?

Again, the ballot box is our main source of fighting back.

We cannot forget in 2010 and 2012 and 2014 and 2016… you get the drift here.

If we overhelmingly vote against this current administration and set up our own groups to check against fraud, we can peacefully assert our rights. That requires effort on everyone’s part.

I see deliberate provocation aimed at triggering over-reaction which will bring the crackdown. Be smart. Don’t take the bait. Keep cool and keep the cameras running.

Couldn’t find the Solzhenitsyn quote I wanted

BadgerHawk on August 7, 2009 at 3:49 PM

Arrest! Need it be said that it is a breaking point in your life, a bolt of lightning which has scored a direct hit on you? That it is an unassimilable spiritual earthquake not every person can cope with, as a result of which people often slip into insanity?

The Universe has as many different centers as there are living beings in it. Each of us is a center of the Universe, and that Universe is shattered when they hiss at you: “You are under arrest.”

If you are arrested, can anything else remain unshattered by this cataclysm?

But the darkened mind is incapable of embracing these displacements in our universe, and both the most sophisticated and the veriest simpleton among us, drawing on all life’s experience,
can gasp out only: “Me? What for?”

And this is a question which, though repeated millions and
millions of times before, has yet to receive an answer.

Arrest is an instantaneous, shattering thrust, expulsion, somersault from one state into another.

this effort toward regaining our liberty must now, once again, be firmly held as something that requires eternal vigilance. We have let our guard down and the enemy is in the door and perched upon the White House.

someone let tyranny in… it wasn’t us.

but we’ve dealt with tyranny before..

I hope to see all the bingo grannies, vets, car-pool moms, hard working American’s carted off to the pokie for voicing their concerns. Learn from the left folks, passive resistance served them well. Keep your powder dry.

I would normally agree, but in these ultra-litigious times, I’m not so sure.

Just to be clear – I’m not advocating the casual drawing of a weapon just because somebody is getting shirty, or even for hustle’n'bustle….but if somebody is being beaten to a pulp on the ground….

After the President himself talked about getting in people’s faces when they oppose his policies and setting up snitch lines at the White House, the only shocker in this video is that it took so long for townhalls to turn violent.

By the Left’s own standards Obama is PERSONALLY responsible for the violence.

Gird your loins people because I fear this is just the beginning.
