Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:19 am on August 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama wants you to know that the stimulus plan is working, or at least two-thirds of the first half … or the first half of the second third … or something. In his prepared remarks, Obama seems to lose track of the fractions he wants to use to describe the stimulus, and winds up with something around seven-eighths of a point (emphases mine, h/t Bruce G):
The plan was divided into three parts. One-third of the money has gone to tax relief for families and small businesses. One-third of the money is cutting people’s taxes. For Americans struggling to pay rising bills with shrinking wages, we kept a campaign promise to put a middle-class tax cut in the pockets of 95 percent of working families — (applause) — a tax cut that began showing up in paychecks of 4.8 million Indiana households about three months ago.
We also cut taxes for small businesses on the investments that they make. And more than 425 small businesses in Indiana have received SBA loans through the recovery package. So that’s — one-third of the money was tax cuts.
Another third of the money in the Recovery Act has been for emergency relief that is helping folks who’ve borne the brunt of this recession. For Americans who were laid off, we expanded unemployment benefits –- and that’s already made a difference for 12 million Americans, including 220,000 folks right here in Indiana. We’re making health insurance 65 percent cheaper for families relying on COBRA while looking for work. Some of you know people who lost their jobs, were worried about losing their health care, couldn’t afford COBRA — we were able to reduce their costs by 65 percent so they could keep their health care while they looking for jobs.
And for states facing historic budget shortfalls, we provided assistance that has saved the jobs of tens of thousands of teachers and public — and police officers and other public servants so that you wouldn’t see the recession get even worse.
So that’s the second half. First half, tax relief. Second half, support for individuals, small businesses, and states that had fallen on hard times.
The last third of the Recovery Act — and that’s what we’re going to talk about here today — is for investments that are not only putting people back to work in the short term, but laying a new foundation for growth and prosperity in the long run.
Well, actually, that’s four thirds and two halves. Obama lumped state aid into the third where he extended unemployment benefits, but that didn’t have to do with unemployment benefits at all. He’s talking about the state grants that originally were supposed to be used for “shovel-ready projects,” but instead went to cover state deficits. In other words, it became a state bailout, which was not how Obama or Nancy Pelosi sold Porkulus.
With the kind of math Obama employs here, it’s no wonder he thinks ObamaCare will not create deficits. That’s the fifth third of the third half of his platform, after all.
Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.
Addendum: Normally I’d put a link to Chris Muir’s Day by Day site here, but today I want to do more than that. Chris has a fundraising drive to keep his excellent cartoon alive. Be sure to drop a few dollars in his collection to keep one of the Rightosphere’s most talented warriors in the fight!

MSNBC is probably the worst for letting their anchors spout socialist propaganda and ideology. I’m not kidding when they were suggesting that the economy was going to bounce back quickly now and that the filthy liar in the White House should get all the credit for the recovery.
The reality is that almost 9.5% unemployment is not good and a little blip in jobs lost are not proof positive that the economy has turned around. My guess is that they hype this because they are so in the tank for the filthy liar they have to pretend the rat bastard traitor is everything they built him up to be in their reporting.

LibTired on August 7, 2009 at 8:56 AM
Someone explain that to me. Is that 247,000 a net loss for July? Did the economy shed a quarter of a million more jobs than were created? If so, how in the hell does the unemployment rate go down? Aside from the obvious answer that they’re not including people who’ve given up looking.
I’m not rooting for the unemployment rate to keep rising, but I also don’t want the Obama administration cooking the books to improve their poll numbers.
Doughboy on August 7, 2009 at 8:56 AM
sherry (August 7, 2009 at 8:41 AM):
MSNBC is a subsidiary of General Electric. The top of the chain (Immelt et al.) have much more invested in GE than its news/entertainment arm, and, in reality, are using that arm much more to promote the administration rather than critique it because GE the conglomerate stands to profit from the tactic.
MSNBC is an advertising and information dissemination (alternately read as propaganda) wing of GE. There’s is a mid- to long-term investment strategy to court federal monies and huge contracts, especially for “green” energy. It can keep NBC as the mainstream outlet while it uses MSNBC in particular to push the information envelope. Think big corporate picture when considering GE entities. The MSNBC executives surely have the go ahead to lose money in their division as needed.
Also, the news division is inherently liberal as everyone knows. It’s just fortunate to have the financial infrastructure to forego profits.
AnonymousDrivel on August 7, 2009 at 8:57 AM
They are also touting the loss of 247,000 jobs as good news since that is less of a decline than in previous months. I would suggest that it simply means we are getting to the point where businesses have laid off pretty much everybody that they can. The filthy liar in the White House is going to be giddy over the fact that it hasn’t reached the point where 10% of the workforce is out of a job. Apparently fractions are not part of his math skills either because 9.4% sucks and the bastard should be run out of office for not doing more to put people back to work in real jobs not the kind they have in Washington State.

“Unemployment FELL to 9.4 percent..”
FELL?
Are you f*cking kidding me?
Dripped is the more operative word.
blatantblue on August 7, 2009 at 9:00 AM
Exactly. To the Obama administration the 6.3 million unemployed are just numbers to be used to make a point. Wow, things are getting better!
To 6.3 million real people it’s no job, unpaid bills, less food and more mental anguish.
The perspective is definitely a different view depending on whether you are dining on spam or on $100 a pound beef.
There are 6+ million unemployed wondering, this morning, how they managed to miss seeing that improving economy. You know; that improving economy that now belongs to Barry, and which he is taking credit for improving.
Yoop on August 7, 2009 at 9:01 AM
You have it right. The 9.4%, as elduende points out, is U3 and does not count all the people who are underemployed (working only part time now or being forced to take unpaid vacations) or people who have given up working all together.
So the economy lost a quarter of a million jobs, but because more than a quarter of a million people gave up looking for work all together the U3 rate went down.
Wicked awesome economy rescue in action.
BadgerHawk on August 7, 2009 at 9:02 AM

TXMomof3 on August 7, 2009 at 9:12 AM
You’re right, it’s a perfect package for GE. Not sure if I’m correct but aren’t they also the ones who will be putting our medical records online?
What I can’t wrap my head around is the blatant lying and manipulation as a group. As Highhopes said, they are freely spouting the socialist agenda. The lack of conscience is appalling to me and it amazes me that as a group of “journalists” they have made the decision to forego all integrity.
I realize this sounds naive on my part but it continues to astound me.
sherry on August 7, 2009 at 9:13 AM
That’s pretty scary then. To manipulate the unemployment rate for political purposes helps no one in the end. It’s not like Obama can prevent these people who’ve given up looking for work from being foreclosed on. And he can’t wave a magic wand and have them pay taxes when they don’t have any income.
The one bright spot is that it’ll be hilarious to watch the drive-bys attempt to spin all of this positively. “Hey, the economy ‘only’ lost 247,000 jobs last month!” “The recession is definitely over!”
Doughboy on August 7, 2009 at 9:13 AM

They are. The only reason Immelt isn’t out at GE is because the large shareholders understand what he’s doing. He’s turning GE into a quasi government entity that will reap massive, multi-billion dollar contracts from green technology and government health care. That’s why MSNBC will continue to prop up President Obama no matter how much ad revenue it costs them. They’re a small slice of GE’s overal pie.

Until academia is wholly restructured, the industry will continue to churn out disproportionately muddle-headed leftists who intentionally or not tow the Leftist line. It’s simple liberal math. Pretend it’s pies. There is the a)govt pie, b)the pie of our money, and c)the pie that has the +7 states. Take pie b,divide in half. Give one half to a and other half to c.
If need to, can take some pieces from new pie c and give to a. No one in c will notice because they allready got their free slice of pie.
Makes sense now, doesn’t it.
conservativegrandma on August 7, 2009 at 10:44 AM
Ed, what you don’t understand is that this is ObamaMath® and in ObamaMath, one trillion plus 300 billion equals zero. By the same token, an individual unit can be broken up into three halves or four thirds. If you had read Orwell, you would understand.
Kafir on August 7, 2009 at 10:46 AM
Something like Gaul, quoth Julius Caesar Baracus Obamus.
Probably the same third. Haven’t seen any of this third in my after-tax paycheck.
Second third, for COBRA and states.
The second half of the first two thirds is the second third of the whole, and the first half of the first two thirds is the first third of the whole. You gotta ‘splain these things, like only a Hahvid orator can.
Where are people being put back to work, Barry O? Only about 10% of the money has been spent for shovel-ready work. Maybe that’s about a third of the third third.
Who’s on first, What’s on second, I don’t know’s on third.
Ya know, that dumb ignoramus overspending President that had four times less deficits than Obama had a description for this: FUZZY MATH.
The Word of Nerd on Thirds.

Here is one article that talks about the changes and new model the Obama administration is using to determine the economy.
http://norris.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/30/revisionist-history-by-the-numbers/
but they nor the Obama administration have explained exactly what changes they are doing or how they are figuring out these numbers. What is strange is I have not seem a single MSM organization talk about these changes which in turn change all the numbers going back 10 years. Is this more of the Obama voodoo math?
