Breaking: Martinez resigning early; Update: Martinez for Martinez?
posted at 11:44 am on August 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Mel Martinez had his Senate seat until January 2011, and the intervening months appeared to give Martinez plenty of policy matters to tackle — not the least of which was the opportunity to slow Barack Obama’s radical agenda on health care and energy policies. Instead, multiple sources report that Martinez told his staff he would not return from the August recess, leaving Governor Charlie Crist to fill his seat by special appointment. Since Crist has already announced his intention to run for that seat himself, who will he pick to keep his seat warm?
Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) will be resigning from the Senate, according to several senior Republican sources familiar with his thinking.
He made the announcement at a morning staff meeting, where he said he will not be returning to the Senate after the August recess.
Martinez announced he wasn’t seeking re-election to the Senate last December, but he insisted that he would be serving out the remainder of his term, which expires in 2011.
It’s the second time that Martinez has resigned from a high-profile Republican office in the last several years. He stepped down as chairman of the Republican National Committee in October 2007 to focus more on his legislative responsibilities as a senator.
So far, no reason has been floated for the early resignation. Martinez could be eyeing a run at the governor’s spot, which Crist plans to vacate in order to run for Martinez’ Senate seat. If that’s the reason, Republicans in Florida could be forgiven for wondering why both men didn’t just stay put and avoid risking both positions. If Martinez doesn’t plan on running for governor, then it becomes even less clear why he would quit with almost eighteen months left in his term. A run for higher office doesn’t seem likely for Martinez, and quitting early would just about kill any chances of that anyway, especially given the precarious position of Republicans in the Senate.
What will Crist do? He certainly won’t appoint himself. He has the authority to do it, but it would not sit well with his constituents to make such a self-serving play. Crist won’t appoint Marco Rubio, either, because he has no intention of running against Rubio in a primary after making him an incumbent. He will need a safe, popular choice, one that poses no political risk for Crist while ensuring that the seat will be open in a Republican primary.
I’d guess that Crist will ask Jeb Bush to take the job. Bush has not indicated any interest in the Senate seat, which is one of the reasons why Crist felt comfortable in running for it. Despite the negatives associated with his brother, Jeb’s popularity remains high in Florida, and his replacement of Martinez will make Florida’s representation a little more conservative for the next year. Bush won’t mind mixing it up with the Obama adminstration, either. Crist could get Bush’s popularity to rub off on himself for his own Senate run next year.
Update: Marc Ambinder says Martinez is sick of office and of Republicans, and wants to bug out. That’ll help build the resume! Another rumor is that the Martinez family is having some difficult personal issues, which would be a more sympathetic and understandable reason for resigning now. Jim Geraghty hears that they may not have to change the signs in the Senate office buildings, at least not much:
It is rumored Gov. Crist will replace Sen. Mel Martinez with former governor Bob Martinez.
They’ll barely have to change the office sign.
Martinez? Well, at least Crist won’t have to worry about competition, but that’s hardly going to cover Crist in glory. Martinez left office after losing to a Democrat when his approval ratings hit somewhere below George Bush’s. He went to work as Bush 41′s drug czar and did nothing to improve his reputation in the two years he served. Crist doesn’t want to give the office to someone who could challenge him for the seat, but picking Bob Martinez is not going to make too many Floridians very happy.
Update II: Val Prieto has Martinez’ resignation statement. He’s also got Rubio’s statement.

While I would lurrrve to see that, with his hearing issues (which I can relate to), Rush has an aversion to large rooms full of Hot Air..er, blowhards.

Put Rubio in there. I know it won’t happen because Crist is a sneaky guy and I’ll bet he’ll put himself there.

That’s nice. Well, it’s good to be charitable although one would expect that the same sentiment would extend to others like Palin, Nah…. impossible.
Is Mel’s career finished?
Cody1991 on August 7, 2009 at 12:20 PM
What do you really think?
I don’t know all that much about his job as Governor but he’s always struck me as escapee from Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory.

If Crist was smart, and he’s not, he’d put someone there who would galvanize the conservatives.
Bob Martinez is not that person.

Mel’s career was on life-support BEFORE he announced he wasn’t running for re-election in 2010.
I don’t see him winning another seat in the House or Senate, let alone getting another cabinet appointment in 2012 or beyond.
teke184 on August 7, 2009 at 12:24 PM
Heh.. I hear he gets his Oompa Loompa on at Planet Beach.
Key West Reader on August 7, 2009 at 12:25 PM
If the Martinez family is having difficult personal issues, it isn’t anything like Palin’s reasons for resigning.
I’m not sorry to see Martinez go but I would suggest perhaps giving the benefit of the doubt and show some simple human decency at least until more is known about why the sudden resignation.
highhopes on August 7, 2009 at 12:25 PM
We used to pee in Mel’s yard when he lived in… Hyde Park, Tampa, Florida. Just three short blocks from the Bay.
Key West Reader on August 7, 2009 at 12:27 PM
I’d do it but the prospect of sitting in the same room with Reid, Schumer, Franken et al makes my skin crawl. I guess if I got in on that sweet health care deal I could grin and bear it.
OK, but you have to promise to fire me in 2010.

My wife actually knows Kathering Harris, and really likes her. It’s interesting to hear her side of the story…

As a Foridian and a Republican I’m glad to see Martiniez go. He’s been pretty worthless in my opinion. Not as worthless as Bill Nelson but that’s not saying much.
Jeb would be a good choice and I woudl support him. I don’t like Crist and won’t support him in the primary. We don’t need another RINO.

Right. I was simply making a comparison between the courtesy Mel is receiving as opposed to the manner in which Palin was treated.

If I was Crist, I would appoint myself. He’s running for Senate anyway. . . how better to run as an incumbent with incumbent money? Martinez can be the other senator.
ThackerAgency on August 7, 2009 at 12:38 PM
I also knew immediately that the numbers had to be cooked. How many people who were out of work do you know who have returned to work? On top of that, we haven’t even discussed the “under employed” – those taking any job for any number of hours because they can’t find full time jobs. How about those 3,200 Oregon workers that got taken off the unemployment rolls for a entire 35 hours before they were back to unemployed?

Doesn’t it seem a little hypocritical for you Palin lovers to act like quitting the Senate early is equivilent to quitting the Governership early while you have always thought being Governor is way more important and more difficult than being Senator?
P.S. yes Martinez’s career is over anyway, just like Palin’s.
Speedwagon82 on August 7, 2009 at 12:45 PM
Broad brush you got there. Not all people who support Palin are equating these two situations.

Crist is a RHINO who gave the Presidential Election to BO when he endorsed McCain before the FL Primary.
.
Jeb Bush would be a great placeholder but I don’t think Crist has the Cojones to appoint him.

Crist is lawfully able to appoint himself, enabling him to run for the seat in 2010 from a position of incumbency (Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money). And since he has no shame whatsoever, I would not be surprised in the least if he did that. The RPOF would have a stronger position to bump any primary challengers because they always do everything possible to protect the incumbent.
The RINOs must really be scared that Crist won’t survive a primary with Rubio.
They could also schedule an interim election, with a primary this coming September, like they will do to fill the seat of the late Sen. King of Jacksonville. But why go to the expense of a statewide election when you can just appoint yourself to the office for which you are already running??
This is all the machinations of Jim Greer, the RPOF Chairman, to deny Republican voters a choice in these elections because he wants to anoint his chosen candidates. Greer, a former Oviedo City Councilman, was Crist’s state campaign chairman in 2006 and has engineered the party to be All Things Charlie, including a provision in 2007 election law eliminating the “resign to run” requirement for State elected officials running for Federal seats (had Charlie been tapped by McCain for Veep in 2008 and not win, he wouldn’t have to resign the Gov). Sen Constantine, Chair of the Senate Ethics and Elections committee, engineered that bill.
Greer has been systematically purging Primary-Choice-Supporting Republicans from positions of party leadership by removing them from their county Republican executive committees.

Second, McCain was climbing well before Crist endorsed him.
And Romney would have lost to O just as surely as McCain.
Third, Crist does not use a tanning bed, you jackass, he is greek.

Bob Martinez would be a Temporary Disaster, just as he was as governor. He is a former teacher from Tampa, chosen because he was Cuban-American and the Tool of various interests in Florida.
He had no leadership skills, and got beaten by the last Demo to be governor of Fla ( and some skillful voter fraud by the Usual Suspects ): Lawton Chiles put on a coonskin cap and said, “The he-coon walks at night” the day before the election in a tacit admission that the last remnants of the old Democrat ‘good ole boy’ machine was busy stealing votes and doing push-polls.
Bob Martinez was a RINO before RINOs were cool ( / )

Could you imagine Limbaugh mixing it up on the Senate floor w/Franken. That kind of awesomeness should not be spoken of.
artlover on August 7, 2009 at 2:01 PM
I think Crist is a loser in this. Right off the bat he’s going to alienate a lot of Republican voters for NOT picking the OBVIOUS choice – Marco Rubio. So Crist is going to start the campaign with the baggage of a self-serving political move hanging over his head when he nominates seat-warmer.
I’m still hoping that Sarah Palin will come down and campaign for Rubio. The way things are headed – Conservatives and Independents will MOTIVATED to go to the polls and vote for Conservative Warriors – something that Rubio is but Crist is not.
And besides – Crist can’t work in Washington, D.C. because it’s cold for half the year and ole Charlie likes to tan.

I have gathered that the current GOV, Crist, has a ‘polarizing’ effect on conservatives. I have seen and heard of pols who try to change their stripes just in time for (re)election. [KBH but you didn't hear that from me]
Here’s a thought that I haven’t seen here yet. What if Crist has seen the light and wants off the train ride to perdition? What if Crist did name Rubio to the Senate? What would that do for the Governor’s credit with the conservatives? What might the avowed staunchly conservative Rubio be able to help his benefactor with when the GOV wants to get reelected?
I don’t think Rubio would sell his principles. I do think Crist has an opportunity to ensure his future. When the ‘WON’ is finally run out of town on a rail, this country is going to make a hard right turn the likes of which would put a smile on Mr. Reagan’s face.
