White House to Dems on town halls: “If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard”
posted at 6:39 pm on August 6, 2009 by Allahpundit
Let me remind you again: They can pass any bill they want any time they want. Conservatives can scream their heads off at these things and there’s not an ounce of good it’ll do if Democrats are united. This whole partisan “war” Obama and Axelrod have concocted is kabuki theater against an enemy they’ve already (momentarily) defeated; it’s the Blue Dogs’ fear that they’ll be thrown out of office if they vote for this travesty that’s put the left in the predicament they’re in. The cowardice they’re showing in not wanting to face their constituents is actually obscuring the deeper cowardice of the the party stalling on a landmark bill they finally have the numbers to pass for no better reason than that doing so will jeopardize their hold on power next year. They want ObamaCare and they want their permanent majority, and if the only way they can get both is by calling conservatives Nazis then that’s what they’re a-gonna do.
Top White House aides gave Senate Democrats a recess battle plan on Thursday, arming the lawmakers with tips for avoiding disastrous town hall meetings while showing them polling on popular aspects of the reform effort…
They showed video clips of the confrontational town halls that have dominated the media coverage, and told senators to do more prep work than usual for their public meetings by making sure their own supporters turn out, senators and aides said.
And they screened TV ads and reviewed the various campaigns by critics of the Democratic plan.
“If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard,” Messina said, according to an official who attended the meeting…
“They are just helping us understand the fringe that is trying to mess up our meetings,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
What does Reid mean by “fringe”? It’s come to this:
Instead of appearing in person, where “extremists” would have “the chance to shout and make YouTube videos,” Baird said Wednesday, he’s holding what he calls “telephone town halls” instead.
Baird said he’s using the new system because he fears his political opponents may be planning “an ambush” to disrupt his meetings, using methods Baird compared to Nazism.
“What we’re seeing right now is close to Brown Shirt tactics,” Baird, D-Vancouver, said in a phone interview. “I mean that very seriously.”…
Pam Benson of Larch Mountain, 62, said she realizes Baird disagrees with her on health care reform…
“He’s supposed to be our representative,” said Benson, a purchasing manager for Portland Cascade Architecture and Engineering in Portland. “He’s supposed to listen to us, whether he’s on our side or not.”…
“We are not nut cases that disagree with this issue,” she said. “There are a lot of very well-informed people that are against this health care thing.”
Luckily she won’t have a chance to face down Baird and then be “punched back twice as hard.” Exit quotation: “Despite the legitimacy of the public’s concern, demonizing democracy has become pretty common these days for the left… By dismissing the anger of conservatives, moderates, libertarians, conservative democrats and independents the administration looks out of touch and appallingly arrogant. In fact, it will hurt them even more because Obama promised to listen to the concerns of the citizens, not operate with a tin ear.”

EXCELLENT idea. Who says the congresscritter has to call the townhall.
Tea party organizers could send a politely worded invitation to their representatives and senators. Stress that you’re letting news agencies know that you are inviting them to explain the bill. That you will be presenting information to the general populace and that you would welcome their participation to clear up any “misinformation” Keep a chair on the podium or stage in a very prominent place labeled for said ‘representative’.

This is a critical point. Many people are afraid to say the “C” word. This is exactly what they’re acting like. Fascism was just Mussolini’s version of Marxism.

If they are then they’ve already lost. The actual number of true Obama loyalists is very small. They garnered a large base on deception, and once that facade begins to fall away the only ones left are that small group.
They cannot hold onto power, especially if they begin blatantly violating the Constitution.

yes but as of now the army still defends the consitution. And leans right. I don’t think they have the car5ds in there hands to push this. I can not imagine tanks rolling over protesters in the USA. I may be wrong but IMO the oath the army takes will require them to side with the protesters.

I have an awful feeling that this is getting to the point where this thugocracy keeps urging their minions to stir things up so badly – that somebody out here who doesn’t have self-control, or thinks they have nothing else to lose, might use these folks with the marching order:
…as moving targets.
Then there goes our arms.
I’ve never been a paranoid before, but this administration has increasingly turned me into one.

Dems are about government control under the auspices of countering corporate control. As if corporations could ever compete with tanks and jets.
But make no mistake, authoritarian statism comes bundled with their kernel assumptions. These tactics are yet one more manifestation of their drive to control – the discussion, and by extension, the people participating in it.

Why don’t they call it the “Progressive” Party? I’m beginning to see there ARE three parties:
The Progressive (far left)
The Democrat (moderate left)
The Republican (moderate & right)
Of course there is the far right, but they don’t seem to have representatives in power (militias, etc.)
I think part of what is hacking people off is that the Democrat party has been taken over and dragged left by the Progressives. It has many Dems scratching their heads–witness the PUMAs of the last election and I’m assuming many AARP members. People are waking up to realize these organizations no longer represent them.

I watched a little of MSNBC this afternoon. They were really working hard pushing the Dim talking points that it’s only a few fringe right-wing nuts, organized and paid for by corporate interests opposed to any HC reform, that are disrupting the townhalls and raising objections to the HC bill.
It’s hard to believe any of the so-called Blue Dogs are buying this line. They have access to the polls too, and they must know that this bill is going over like a lead balloon with the majority of voters. Are they really going to risk being voted out of their cushy jobs next year?

Imo, its their last shot.
Their idiotic marxist/commie ideologies always fail when put up against reasoned analysis and the facts of history, so they tried another approach..”fairness” fighting “racism” and “sexism” or fighting for the “common people” while not mentioning the roots of their ideologies. That worked to a point..but freedom and capitalism continued. Their last gasp..which seemed to be working, and inflated their confidence, was the to push environmentalism and extreme green policies under the guise of “saving the Earth”. Success in these policies would have bankrupted the country and strangled capitalism and personal freedoms. Now people are actually starting to think about what is being sold to them, and arriving at the conclusion, “Thanks…but no thanks”.
This is it for them.
They’ve run out of angles to destroy capitalism. If they loose this time, they’re done.
This is why they will get ugly and dangerous. They are like a rabid dog backed into a corner, or a starving animal sensing a stronger animal about to take its food away.
Itchee Dryback on August 6, 2009 at 7:22 PM
I’m not sure because we do have Kent State in our past. I think that the military will side with what they know as the legally elected government until that government crosses a clear line. What and where that line is I don’t know. Maybe it would take mass executions in the streets before the military decides they are on the wrong side.

I’m also thinking YouTube, Twitter, the Internet, and Talk Radio are vital to exposing the game these people are trying to play. Were it not for these resources of information, if we were forced to ONLY listen to the networks for our “news” *shutter!* most of us would have no idea there are tea parties or how many were there, that these townhalls are happening the way they are, that AARP got handed their backsides on a plate by the seniors, that Obama told the SEIU that he was unequivocally for single-payer, etc.
Information derived from many places, verified, confirmed, and just gathering pieces is essential to this fight.

here you have grandma and grandpa, avg middle class people. Do you really want to compare the two?
I would color myself purple if the army attacks peaceful protestors in the streets of any major city.
We also had the watts riots etc where the army moved in but that too was when violence fires, riots etc were being committed.
The only thing it would be compareable too would be the attacks in the South by local authorities during the civil rights peaceful protests and we all Know how that turned out. Kent State is different because it wasn’t something ordered by the military. You had poorly trained National Guardsmen, with poor leadership placed in a situation where a couple of them handled it very, very poorly.
Sort of like Abu Ghraib – Poorly trained, undisciplined soldiers with terrible leadership. That’s not indicative of the entire armed forces.
This isn’t meant to slam National Guard or Reserves, but it is what it is, especially prior to the Iraq war.
