White House to Dems on town halls: “If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard”

posted at 6:39 pm on August 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

Let me remind you again: They can pass any bill they want any time they want. Conservatives can scream their heads off at these things and there’s not an ounce of good it’ll do if Democrats are united. This whole partisan “war” Obama and Axelrod have concocted is kabuki theater against an enemy they’ve already (momentarily) defeated; it’s the Blue Dogs’ fear that they’ll be thrown out of office if they vote for this travesty that’s put the left in the predicament they’re in. The cowardice they’re showing in not wanting to face their constituents is actually obscuring the deeper cowardice of the the party stalling on a landmark bill they finally have the numbers to pass for no better reason than that doing so will jeopardize their hold on power next year. They want ObamaCare and they want their permanent majority, and if the only way they can get both is by calling conservatives Nazis then that’s what they’re a-gonna do.

Top White House aides gave Senate Democrats a recess battle plan on Thursday, arming the lawmakers with tips for avoiding disastrous town hall meetings while showing them polling on popular aspects of the reform effort…

They showed video clips of the confrontational town halls that have dominated the media coverage, and told senators to do more prep work than usual for their public meetings by making sure their own supporters turn out, senators and aides said.

And they screened TV ads and reviewed the various campaigns by critics of the Democratic plan.

“If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard,” Messina said, according to an official who attended the meeting…

“They are just helping us understand the fringe that is trying to mess up our meetings,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

What does Reid mean by “fringe”? It’s come to this:

Instead of appearing in person, where “extremists” would have “the chance to shout and make YouTube videos,” Baird said Wednesday, he’s holding what he calls “telephone town halls” instead.

Baird said he’s using the new system because he fears his political opponents may be planning “an ambush” to disrupt his meetings, using methods Baird compared to Nazism.

“What we’re seeing right now is close to Brown Shirt tactics,” Baird, D-Vancouver, said in a phone interview. “I mean that very seriously.”…

Pam Benson of Larch Mountain, 62, said she realizes Baird disagrees with her on health care reform…

“He’s supposed to be our representative,” said Benson, a purchasing manager for Portland Cascade Architecture and Engineering in Portland. “He’s supposed to listen to us, whether he’s on our side or not.”…

“We are not nut cases that disagree with this issue,” she said. “There are a lot of very well-informed people that are against this health care thing.”

Luckily she won’t have a chance to face down Baird and then be “punched back twice as hard.” Exit quotation: “Despite the legitimacy of the public’s concern, demonizing democracy has become pretty common these days for the left… By dismissing the anger of conservatives, moderates, libertarians, conservative democrats and independents the administration looks out of touch and appallingly arrogant. In fact, it will hurt them even more because Obama promised to listen to the concerns of the citizens, not operate with a tin ear.”

Interestingly, the telephone conferences acknowledge the fact that a vote for the health care bill will doom the blue dogs. What I mean to say is, the avoidance of the constituents proves they understand what the constituents want (or don’t want, as the case is here).

Either that or they are afraid of having to field birther ?’s.

I can’t imagine a worse way for the Obama team to frame the current debate. Don’t get me wrong — I’m glad they’re pursuing this tack; it just seems politically inept to a staggering degree.

It also points up how totally useless the Republicans are as a political entity that they can’t (as yet) capitalize on Democrat buffoonery of this scale.

The democrats have gone from wanting to win elections to wanting to shut down any voice that speaks out against them.

Hugo Chavezism has come to America.

When the facts are against you, and you can’t ridicule them away, then you start to threaten people. The Marxists giggled about the Tea Parties…but the volume increased, the opposition not just grew but has dug in for a fight.

So now comes the threats. We could be turning into a banana repuublic, where scores may be settled the ugly way.

The wonderful thing about Bush v. Gore was the calm deportment of all the parties. No tanks in the streets, no need.

Have we really slipped so far…or do those who think the political class work for them instead of the other way around have a choice?

We did “survive” Carter. I am unsure we can “survive” Bama the same way…nationalizing healthcare, Crap+Tax, these insanities will be irreversible if enacted. The line is drawn on the fundamental question: who serves whom, between the people and the state.

“life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” may be on the line.

That this is a civil war within the donkeys is a great point! It can be used to make teh One look even weaker. Some GOP commercials in blue dog areas asking questions like “They meet with Pelosi/Reid/Obama, but not their own constituents? Whose interests do they really represent?” Or “They vote for bills with out reading them. They vote for bills without talking to those they represent. they vote for bills they can’t pay for. Would you keep a doctor who treated you this way? If they vote for this healthcare bill you won’t have a choice”.

We need to make them pay for staying out of touch. Also, hit their offices daily with faxes and e-mails of current poll results against this bill. Something like “Dear senator XXXX, you might want to look at the opinions of the people who will be voting in the next election before you vote in favor of this bill”

Just thoughts. We don’t have to be in their face physically to keep the pressure on.

We have the brownshirts calling free people brownshirts. We have thugs calling civil people thugs. We have the real traitors calling true patriots traitors.
