Video: The gun giveaway truck promotion
posted at 8:05 am on August 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I first heard the audio in this clip when I was on Hugh Hewitt’s show yesterday, but I didn’t see the video until later in the evening. The obvious discomfort of the CNN host here will make viewers laugh. Mark Muller has no reservations defending his sales promotion that gives away a voucher for an AK-47 with every new pickup truck sold. Instead of defending himself, Muller pushes back against the questioning, using the home-invasion murder of a husband and wife to explain that people need to consider self-defense rather than wait for someone else to rescue them. Muller’s motto seems to get the reporter the most flustered:
Hosts should make sure they have the motto correct before attempting to criticize it, especially to act offended at the juxtaposition of “God” and “guns”. She trots out a weak version of “What would Jesus do?” in an attempt to embarrass Muller, but instead Muller points out that (a) there were no guns in Jesus’ time, and (b) He wouldn’t need one anyway. Muller also exposes his opponent as a rube on religion by quoting Luke 22:36: [Jesus] said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.["]
Perhaps it’s not such a surprise that Muller could dissect CNN’s interviewer so handily. It turns out that Muller is the older brother of radio personality Mancow, a fact that Hugh discovered in his interview of the car dealer. Be sure to listen to the podcast. My part of the show can be heard in this podcast.

Strange. I was thinking about the same and was going to say it but decided not to reply to such a lame comment.

When I was a teenager, I worked in a grocery store in the last remnants of a rural town just to the east of Louisville, which has now consumed that little town. A vendor from the northeast spent an afternoon with us touting a new product line. He was trying to open a package back in our stockroom while several of us stood around watching him, and finally he said, “I wish someone had a knife.” Everyone one of us pulled out pocket knives, some of which were quite large. His eyes were like saucers, and he said, “I heard about you Southerners and your knives.”
I always have a knife. One I carry is old Marine K-bar.
When I’m out by myself in the woods (hiking, hunting, “plinking”) I have a substantial knife strapped to my belt. A friend asked me if I carried it because of coyotes. I told him that I carried it because of humans. I also pointed out that my knifes have guards on them because blood can make the handle slippery as hell.
In that same small town, when I was 14 I had a friend who lived on a horse farm just past the last street. I used to take my .22 rifle an we’d plink bottles and cans along the L&N railroad tracks that cut across his farm. When I’d go, I’d strap that rifle over my shoulder and carry two bandoleers of ammunition across my chest. I’d walk right through town and even stop at the Chevron to buy a coke. No one said a word to me.
If a 14 year old did that today, they’d dispatch the SWAT team, put film footage on CNN, and send the kid off for state counseling.
Ahh, the South. I loved her when she still wore the garments of liberty.
Oh yeah, when I was in high school, a friend of mine was on the sharpshooting team. He kept his rifle in his locker.

I carry a 3-inch knife as well, though be aware that sticking it in your pocket technically makes it an illegally concealed weapon(though all accounts I’ve heard say cops won’t make a big deal out of it in a hunting state like this).
Better choice: holster and handgun. I carry my Bersa UC 9 everywhere I legally can. In Wisconsin, that means no places that serve alcohol(includes places like Applebee’s), no public buildings, not within 1000 feet of schools(tricky but hard to enforce), and you can’t have a loaded gun in the car(it has to be unloaded, encased, and out of reach). The laws are stupid, but they can be obeyed while still actively open carrying.
Example: I go to the grocery store. I have a lightweight zipper nylon case with a handle that holds my weapon and up to five magazines. I stick it back behind the back seat (out of reach), drive to my destination, load and rack it, holster it, and go inside. When I come out, I unload it, put the one in the chamber back in the mag, zipper it up, and go home. Tedious at first, but you get quicker at it as time goes on. In one of the two states without concealed carry, it’s the best you can do.

I hate it when leftys try to take the moral high ground by mentioning Jesus, whom they don’t believe in anyway.
I know a liberal who had a bumper sticker that says “Who would Jesus bomb?” I got annoyed one day and printed out a sticker that said “abort” and stuck it over the word “bomb”. She didn’t notice it for about 2 weeks, at which point she took the entire bumper sticker off of the car. Tee-hee-hee!
I have heard quite a few stories about people who would never have considered buying guns before, that are buying them now.

When we left, she was asking how soon we could come back.

A “legal” (non-full auto) AK-47 seems like OVERKILL to me. It’s a little big to stuff in your back pocket or purse.
***
However, as an ex U.S. Army draftee overkill is a lot better than underkill! The M-14 we used was great–but heavy.

I don,t hunt but my wife and I have our CWP permit .We both carry ever where we go .We only take it off in places that don,t allow you to carry. We both carry at our church the pastor gave us both permission to do so.I have more handguns and rifles than i need but not as many as i want.We live way out in the boonies so we both carry 24/7.My wife ask me one,s why we have to carry in our home so i told it will allow you a chance to fight you way to the 12 gauge.

Same here. I live in MA and when I was around 14-15 a friend and I were walking down the street and a cop stopped us. He wanted to let us know that the train tracks were off limits for shooting because guys were working them and the railroad was pissed at our trespassing. We thanked him and he told us to be safe. That was back in the 60s but like you said try that now and the kids would be face down with guns to their heads. Why the change? The lefts amazingly effect scare program about guns and that is all.
Guns threaten the left’s agenda because you can’t have a revolution if the “people” have the ability to fight back.

Several months back I was buying a BCG for my AR from Fulton Armory. On their site they tell a story of “Mom’s Gun”. I’m younger and didn’t live during the this time in 1960 so I thought it was fascinating. It tells the story of the mother of Fulton Armory owner buying a rifle for $9.95 in a barrel at the Wanamaker’s department store in center city Philadelphia. Then riding home unmolested with the rifle on public transportation. It was definitely a different time.

How about this -
If i want a assault weapon to defend my family then… you shut the hell up about it and not try to get my family killed.
If you want to sit at home, and let people murder and rape your family while you give them strong worded talks… go ahead be a victim, i won’t say a damn thing about it.
Its a free society how about you stop trying to govern my household. I can’t tell you not to have unprotected sex, don’t murder your 6 month old baby or don’t live together before your married. SO WHY WOULD YOU THINK YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO IN MY DAMN HOME?
O, and before some idiot tries to say “if you by an AK-47 and come in my home, then it effects(or affects? err can not remember) me! Then tell me mr smarty pants, how many deaths in the US are causes by legal assault weapons? that’s right 0 , know why? if somebody was to go on a murder spree and kill people with an assault weapon, democrats would have it on every news channel about the evils of guns and have a bill taking away the 2nd amendment the next day. Most criminals do not legally purchase guns – hence if you take away the right of law abiding citizens to buy guns, the criminals get to run the land. We would have no way to defend ourselves from the bad guys.
So – If you want to let your daughter/wife/self get raped and tortured cause your to chicken *%^& and retarded to buy a gun , and not enough of a man to defend your family, then go ahead. I for one, will always have a gun legal or not.

I carry a Deringer on my person and a Smith & Wesson 38 w/laser in my car. Our home is patrolled by a 94-lb Doberman who strongly dislikes strangers & a Glock 9mm.
I have 2 Bibles, one at work, one at home. I am pro-life and pro-death penalty – b/c unborn babies and convicts are, gasp of all gasps, not morally equivalent.
I think homosexuality is a deviant sin & an abomination to God (yet, strangely I am not afraid or “scared of” homosexual people, so I don’t think I qualify as a ‘phobe).
I think I may epitomize every single thing liberals hate, which makes me one proud American. It lets you know you are sane and on the right side of the fence.

LOL. Mon night, our block was locked down by cops and SWAT team. Cause: neighbor reported a kid playing with bbgun, as man with rifle.
Got to see assault rifles up close, as half the team was stationed outside our window. The kid was hiding inside home, came out, was handcuffed. Cops ended up letting him go because bbguns are not illegal here. Hope neighbor saw what real guns look like….

I’d think learning to shoot a hand gun for protection would be empowering for most women. My wife feared guns, until she learned how to shoot.
Jeff from WI on August 6, 2009
I can’t get my wife to the range with me, but my daughter is constatly pestering me to take her so she can practice with the handgun I gave her for her eighteenth birthday. She definitely feels empowered by it’s existence and her own skill. Of course, this is the same fearless young lady that jumped out of a plane before she turned 17. Damn, I’m proud of that little girl who turned 20 today. Happy birthday, Pumpkin.

Eventually I got my wife a pistol that she likes, a Ruger SR9
Jeff from WI on August 6, 2009 at 10:53 AM
We also have an AR-15 and she is a beauty. Cost right at 700. Everyone that shoots it gets this gigantic smile on their face and starts screaming in a kind of weird unknown language – it is quite amusing.
Ris4victory on August 6, 2009 at 10:53 AM
One of my two daughters learned to shoot. In fact she’s hunted with me. Someday I’ll get her a pistol, but at her house she has a Remington 870 12 ga. like mine for protection.
Jeff from WI on August 6, 2009 at 10:56 AM
What are you insane? It’s a well established leftest FACT that as soon as you get your sweaty little hands on that thing you will grab a bible and head out to shoot kids in playgrounds. Do yourself a favor and don’t do it. Do it it for the kids. Do it for yourself. Just do it.

The dobie dislikes everything (including the glock) except for his 4 humans. He makes entertaining rather, well, difficult. He dislikes certain people too, but that is another story.
Ris4victory on August 6, 2009 at 10:57 AM
To bad about the wife. Both my wife and I have CCW permits and both my son and daughter have been shooting since the age of 13. My son is now 21 and is planning to get his CCW permit and my daughter who is 18 can’t wait fro hers. My daughter has a 100 year old .22 single shot and treats it as a prized possession. She is small and wants to get a Ruger Bearcat .22 for target shooting when she is of age.

Any husband/father that remains willfully unarmed is a pathetic coward.
I cannot imagine how they can look themselves in the mirror, or look into their loved ones’ eyes, knowing they have abdicated their manly duty to defend and protect their family.
I’m even more surprised that their partner remains with them. If I were a woman married to such a piss-poor excuse for a ‘man’, I’d grab the kids and run a mile.
LimeyGeek on August 6, 2009 at 11:29 AM
I would just like to point out that even thought the car dealer, news anchor, and this article on HA all refer to “AK-47′s,” that we ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT AK-47′s! AK-47′s are already controlled items under the National Firearms Act and cost in excess of $10,000 and require a registration with and a special tax paid to the Federal government. (see this page to see one for sale http://www.gunsamerica.com/946126068/Guns-For-Sale/Gun-Auctions/Rifles/Class-3-Rifles/Class-3-Subguns/AK47.htm)
The guns they are refering to are semiautomatic rifles that use the AK-style gas-reloading system and are designed to look similar to ‘real’ AK-47′s. They cannot readily go into ‘full auto’ mode. Additionally, a few may be called: AK47 Sporters, but most will have names that DO NOT include ‘AK-47′ in them so that they can be made or imported without restrictions and sold to the general public.
spark21 on August 6, 2009 at 11:29 AM
Yes. This is a critical distinction.
They are only cosmetically similar to AK-47s. Functionally, they are no different from any other semi-auto rifle.
LimeyGeek on August 6, 2009 at 11:32 AM
What an utter dismantling of a biased reporter. This is in my top 5 of the year.
WAY TO GO MARK!!!
Hey, we’ve got a new MM to add to the list of good guys.
MechEng5by5 on August 6, 2009 at 11:34 AM
For simple close range point and shoot, its a Seecamp with the pocket slipper laser aimer… it is snag free and the outline does not say ‘pistol’. That is good, very good, and you can get similar for the Kel-Tec P3AT and other smaller handguns. You are an inch high from the laser at 25′ and on the dot at 50′ with a 32.
Down to the last bits on the Vz.61 build which has a lovely holster for open carry.
After that… I’m glad 45 ACP finally got back into some of my favorite suppliers so I can reload Tommy. Those drum mags and passle of 20 and 30 round sticks take a lot of ammo.
At long range I’ll depend on Russians… M-N ammo is cheap and the thing is a damned accurate rifle even with just iron sights, which I’ll keep as original equipment and a bit of firing history on the cheap is what I want. I can live with corrosive ammo on the cheap… the very cheap, really. The USSR has proven good for something…
If you have a friend with a C&R, talk to them about the older pistols and rifles… there are still good firearms to be had that are very functional and give you a piece of history to use for your defense. Keep the barrel clean, the action smooth and the outside just as it came. A nice old Walther or Mauser from before WWII speaks of history, workmanship and people who really did care about their designs. Modern and sleek are for looks: form and function keep you alive.
Next up on the needed list is an old Browning Auto-5 in 12ga. Browning is a name you cannot get too much of… and the Auto-5 started production way back when, and was finally ended in 2000 or so when they went magnum with it. I don’t need that… old guns need a home, too.

I love that caliber (though mine is a blackhawk). It’s the pickup truck of pistols. 148 gr WC on 3 gr of Bullseye makes nice little holes on the paper; or 158 JHP on 14gr of H110 not only takes the deer but cooks it too!

I was surprised and very happy with the accuracy of my M-N, circa 1940. And it’s not a sniper model, either. Just a run-of-the-mill $79.00 surplus from Dunham’s with a clean bore and sharp rifling. Considering the corrosive primers they used back then, that speaks well of it’s prior maintenance.

Does Colt sell their AR15 in a left-handed model? I went to their web site and couldn’t find any way to contact them and ask them. They did have one (Militay and Police model) that said that it could be used by left-handed people. I had the impression that the ejected shells weren’t ejected in front of my face.
Thanks.

Epic dismantling of that ignorant Kool-Aid guzzling robot who calls himself a news reporter. These are the kind of people that made America strong. Anyone know if that guy has a Paypal account? I’d like to send him a few bucks for a cold one, on me with compliments.
Also…if there’s anyone here who is still on the fence as to purchasing a firearm…get one. It may be too late for you when the economy enters the final nosedive and it’s already too late for some of us who’ve graduated into a workplace with no work.

While I agree that the interviewer was biased, I give her credit for allowing Mr. Muller to answer her questions, not just throwing out a comment without a chance for response.
Also, I think she had a legit question about God & guns, while Mr. Muller immediately went into “you got something against God?” defensive mode. He brought it back though and answered it very succinctly – gotta be responsible to protect yourself.

Don’t laugh, but we have 2 10lb mini dachshunds and they are VERY effective watchdogs. They have much louder, lower barks than you would expect for such a small dog. And they sure don’t like strangers. The male is really afraid of strangers, especially men. ANYONE who even slams a car door outside gets quite a greeting. And the male has been known to chase young men (i.e. my son’s teenage friends) down the street, nipping at their heels. The mail truck and any other dog, no matter how large too. I’ve yet to see a large dog stand up to him.
You can set them off by knocking on a table, they have excellent hearing.
So even though they’re ankle-biters and couldn’t really hurt anyone, they can sure frighten them off and alert the neighborhood.
