St. Louis town hall: Protesters locked out while SEIU is admitted? Update: “These Members need cover”

posted at 9:59 pm on August 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

Jim Hoft was there and claims that’s exactly what happened. Funny coincidence: Some people at the town hall in Tampa where the fight broke out saw a curiously large number of SEIU people there, too.

SEIU & Castor organize a townhall and announce it at the last minute as to reduce opposition voices. The townhall was packed 1/2 w SEIU people.

When supporters of healthcare freedom (ie, anti-BigGovHealth demonstrators) were prevented access to the townhall they began to shout, bang windows & doors.

Normally I’d be skeptical that this is as bad as it looks — maybe the SEIU guys were staffing the event or maybe they’d already been admitted and had stepped outside for something — but if Rachel Maddow and Think Progress don’t care what’s true and what’s not, why should I? Go ahead and assume the worst. The left certainly would. Click the image to watch.

Update: Amanda Carpenter e-mails to point me to Health Care for America Now’s playbook on how to counter conservative protesters at town halls. The money bit:

Another one of Ms. Jorge’s tips is to “Address the [member of Congress] directly with a positive message: Remember, these Members need cover and they are getting beaten up by right wing zealots in these meetings.”

HCAN Communications Director Jacki Schechner said protecting elected officials who support their favored reforms was necessary given the contentious nature of some town-hall meetings.

Ms. Schechner said conservatives are baiting lawmakers into holding town-hall meetings, “so [lawmakers] can get yelled at and they don’t want to feel unsafe and uncomfortable.”

Stacking the audience with friendly SEIU members in lieu of ObamaCare naysayers surely qualifies as providing “cover.” Fun fact: One of the organizations on HCAN’s steering committee is, you guessed it, SEIU.

Why meet with Congress in Town Hall meetings if the union stacks the deck in not letting you in…just throw another tea party!

Shouldn’t stop people from calling and e-mailing their congress critters. Also, standing outside the doors, getting in way of any television cameras needs to help make sure that the media can’t start spinning all of this “support” for the bill from adoring fans.

Did you see the article in the Strib about the Minnesota town halls? I don’t think Walz liked being called a communist/socialist very much LOL! MaCullum – clueless as ever

I wouldn’t read the Star and Sickle even if you held a gun to my head, but I can imagine the scene.

McCollum is the same trashy stiff who refused to attend the first ‘Support the Troops’ rally at the state capitol way back in 2003. She has always been a dimwit and her voters could possibly be even dumber than Ellison’s.

I was at the Carnahan joke-fest tonight. We got there at 5:30 p.m. and stood in a line that went from the back of the building, along the side, all the way around to the front. We were probably 1/4 of the way from the door in line. Doors were supposed to open at 6:00 p.m. We were told that the venue held 200 people. Any idiot would know, the way these meetings have been going in St. Louis, that at least 1,000 would be there tonight. So the Carnahan people were controlling the event by staging it at an inappropriate venue–one that held a “manageable” number, evidently.

I’m 57 years old, and I guess I’m just naive. I assumed that it would be first come, first in. The line started moving in an orderly way, then suddenly we were stopped–”It’s full,” they said. I was about 10 people back and didn’t get in. With my own eyes, I saw people continue to be let in at a side door. Some of them were wearing purple shirts that identified them as SEIU members.

About 500 of us stayed outside the doors, waiting for what, I’m not sure, but waiting until the event was over. I was well aware that Carnahan, being the coward that he is (I was locked out of an event of his at a car dealership earlier this week) would scurry out a back door and not face the overflow crowd. That’s exactly what he did.

The mainstream media reported that there were 1,000 people at the event. My guess was there were more like 2,000 waiting in line to be let inside. I have no idea how many were actually let in.

Andy Stern, head of SEIU along with Ayers is a former member of the SDS/Weather Underground terrorists who were/are guilty of acts of sedition against this country.

lorien1973 on August 6, 2009 at 11:33 PM

I don’t get it. Why bother to hold these meetings when you have to pack them with the choir you’re preaching to to keep them under control? To get the proper sound byte for the media?

I thought the media was already so far up Obama’s ass there’d be no point in the charade.

Strick on August 6, 2009 at 11:34 PM

So the Left’s point now is to insulate our Representatives from any whiff of opposition.

They’ve taken “we think you’re stupid” to a whole new level. Now they’re assuming that Congressmen are so stupid that if they stack townhalls only with adoring union members and Acorn activists, the Congressmen will assume that all is well.

I guess we need to take this to the next level to get their attention.

guntotinglibertarian on August 6, 2009 at 11:35 PM

OMG, check out the “organizer” t-shirts with the quotes.

misslizzi on August 6, 2009 at 10:59 PM

Pisses me off to see a Dorothy Day quote on those shirts. I wonder what the commies in SEIU would think if they learned that she quit being a commie and became a Catholic?

On another note, is there anyone in NY-07 that wants to meet up and go to Joe Crowley’s office in Queens? I can’t seem to find a townhall listing on his website, but it might be good to make our presence known.

Fallen Sparrow on August 6, 2009 at 11:37 PM

SEIU was there to shout down the “angry mob” of people against ObamaCare. They also were there to waste time asking inane, softball questions. Any time that Carnahan could spend with one of their questions was time not spent dealing with the “radical mob.” Saul Alinsky, baby.

Card check got killed b/c it was just too blatant. There is Card Check-lite moving through congress now that amounts to about the same thing under a different name.

I forget the details & name right now, but it had something to do with expediting Guv “mediation” within two weeks of a call for a vote on unionizing. If an employer could not comply with with an instituion of a “fair” vote within 2 weeks, they have to accept the guv’s decision.

Under the definition in the bill, any company over 50-100 peeps could be found out of compliance as how do you meet the nebulous definition of “fair” in so short a period. Then a Labor Czar comes in and decides for everyone, any guesses how that’s gonna work out?

Today is August 7th.

People are up posting their opinions, feelings, and experiences after a day of townhall meetings, blog reading, contacting their reps.

Their is a movement building.
We are tired of being ignored.

When 300 to 500 people show up to voice their disapproval and they are turned away because SEIU/ACORN or some other Obama-funded group was paid to show up early, reserve seats, and block entrances, this only adds fuel to a blazing inferno.

The future is uncertain.

VibrioCocci on August 7, 2009 at 12:47 AM

They can call us fringe, kooks, right wing nuts, paid shills for the insurance companies.

People who have attended these townhall meetings are seeing first hand what their elected reps really think of them.

The movement builds.

Obama supporters attack a man at St. Louis Town Hall

UPDATE: St. Louis County police say six people were arrested. Two of those were arrested on suspicion of assault, one of resisting arrest and three on suspicion of committing peace disturbances. … a 38-year-old conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with “Don’t tread on me” printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room of the St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was waiting to be treated for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face that he suffered in the attack. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack started.

“It just seems there’s no freedom of speech without being attacked,” he said.

Other than some die-hard Hilly peeps, that well went dry after it came down to Mac & Bam-bam. But having been complicit with, and aware of my methodogy I am hardly viewed in the same light.

Alot of them know that in the threads I am Archimedes and that I write under MJMotley at A/T & PAP’sInt’l, so they fairly abreast of my activities, know at least some of what I know as they gave it to me, and definately see me as a threat. She said she saw a woman in handcuffs who was complaining about the pain of the spray and asking to wash her face and eyes. The response of the officer who was arresting her was, “I warned you,” Majors said.

Majors said the woman had been speaking very loudly and passionately in support of health-care reform earlier in the evening.

“She made herself very visible,” Majors said.

This was an account of one of the arrests from the St. Louis townhall meeting. The media will try to paint this as the conservatives starting fights and being unruly. But, this shows that pro-Obamacare people are also crossing the line.

Also, after the White House told Democrats to “punch back twice as hard” it will be easy for Conservatives to make the point that Obama has ratcheted up the tension instead of dialed it down.

Hannity, Beck, Rush, Levin, etc should read that quote over and over to make the point that this White House is sending out the dog whistle to it’s ACORN and union thugs. Not exactly a Presidential thing to do. Presidents are supposed to call for calm and reason, not ramp it up.

This SEIU in particular and also these auto unions are a disgrace to the labor movement. These other unions need to start getting out there and denouncing them and their out of control activities and “fishy” links to this administration. But, I’m not holding my breath. Also, I never dreamed that the AMA and AARP would support this pile of crap.

Why would coal miners and electricians, firefighters, policemen, etc. be happy with this ilk or the ObamaCare plan for that matter? Regardless of any health care provisions for those of us in unions, it’s going to hurt millions of other people who aren’t, it’s going to hurt friends and family, and eventually it will hurt us anyway.

They let Driehaus supporters in early to fill the front of the room, then opened things by calling out all the “teabaggers” in the room and telling them to shut up or be removed. Provocative? This will escalate, but the real battle will occur, IMO, when the Dems try to STEAL the elections in 2010 and 2012. This is something that needs to be prepared for now.

This guy was supposed to be a Uniter that will bring the country together. He is probably the most divisive President I’ve ever seen.

JohnInCA on August 7, 2009 at 2:20 AM

“Probably?”

Perhaps we need to create a “bodyguard” group to protect grandma and grandpa from these union toughs from now on. A Sony DCR-SR45 Handycam in the right hand, and a 1911 on the right hip.

You know, since it’s now becoming obvious that the “teeth” behind the 1st amendment just might be necessary to freely exercise it.

The Ronin Edge on August 7, 2009 at 3:35 AM

Absolutely. Nothing pisses me off more than to see footage of union and other thugs that disrupt protests and nobody puts them in their place.

I’ve been saying for a while now, come 2010 America is going to look like those pictures from Iran’s election, because they are absolutely going to try to steal or shut down the 2010 elections.

It’s the only thing that explains their arrogance and lack of concern about keeping their jobs

invest in steel, lead, and pyrodex futures

sven10077 on August 7, 2009 at 7:06 AM

So it looks like it’s OK for government union thugs to organize and send out action points, but citizens, no way. Isn’t that the story the unutterably contemptible State run media wants you to buy?

FDR tried the same thing, it failed miserably.

Steel lead and pyrodex investments have the best return.

We need to start picketing outside SEIU and AFL-CIO offices.

I suggest Tea Partiers pick one day a week and go and peaceably assemble outside their offices with signs informing their members what the leadership is doing on their behalf

Obama is our Hitler
The labor unions are the SS
Trust NO ONE in a labor union, they’re all traitors.
Trust NO ONE who calls themselves a Democrat, they’re all in league with Satan.

It’s time to organize against the communist unions.

I would like to amend a post I made yesterday when I read that these thugs were being directed to these townhall meetings. I mistakenly remarked that the probability of violence was 98.635%….. please permit me to change that to 100%

Wait until some union goon hurts grandma or grandpa at one of these meetings. It’ll go nuclear and some union thug will be beaten to death.

From Thomas Pain and the Rights of Man.

From a small spark, kindled in America, a flame has arisen, not to be extinguished. Without consuming, it winds its progress from nation to nation, and conquers by a silent operation. Man finds himself changed, he scarcely perceives how. He acquires a knowledge of his rights by attending justly to his interest, and discovers in the event that the strength and powers of despotism consist wholly in the fear of resisting it, and that, in order “to be free, it is sufficient that he wills it.”

My Congressman, Paul Tonko, D NY – 21 brags about his former State employment. By virtue of his job as a “professional” ( an engineer) he was (and maybe still is) a member of the Public Employees Federation. The PEF is a proud and active affiliate of the SEIU and mentions that on almost every piece of Union information that goes out from PEF.

I was a member 20 years ago and they couldn’t stop bragging about it then.

Mr. Grump on August 7, 2009 at 8:02 AM

Footage of the fight last night at the Russ Carnahan town hall. An attack by an SEIU thug. He and five others were arrested. I was with the guy who shot this footage–the whole thing happened in front of me. God bless America.

Obama: Community Thug-in-Chief.

labwriter on August 7, 2009 at 8:41 AM

It won’t matter anyway. They’ll just be preaching to the choir for the most part. And they’ll look bad doing it. It will just cement objection.

jeanie on August 7, 2009 at 8:46 AM

Footage of SEIU thugs being let in a side door at the Carnahan event. This was after we were told that the room was full and the doors were locked. All of these people (except the selected ones let in) were locked out. At about 2:50, you see this starting to get really ugly. Then at 3:30, some guy starts speaking to the crowd and calms things down.

labwriter on August 7, 2009 at 8:55 AM

this is getting nasty. the dems have unleashed their brownshirts who are frustrated they cannot just get their way and will literally jam “reform” down our throats through force if they have to. “hit back twice as hard”? really? i have not seen any swastikas anywhere? just fringe opposition?

i almost cannot believe the things I’m hearing, or rather, I can believe the things I’m hearing and seeing but I cannot believe that so many people A)don’t care, B)aren’t getting the truth, and C)are so brainwashed that they still think these statists are looking out for our best interests.

i will make it a point to be at the next town hall meeting that I hear about in the St. Louis area. i have to see this in person with my own eyes and ears.

Paul_McD on August 7, 2009 at 9:07 AM

More mobsters from St. Louis.

Not sure if this was from last night’s Carnahan thugfest; he’s had two other forums in the last few weeks. The sight of blue-haired old ladies and crotchety old men is truly scary to behold…

Does stifling voiced opposition equal no opposition? What does the theatre of a placated Town Hall accomplish, exactly?

At work must be a belief that the herding instinct is alive and well amongst enough Americans that it will overcome logical opposition and lead to support. How else to explain it all?

Using the herding instinct is at the heart of the ‘turfing strategy: make enough sheeple believe that the rest of the herd thinks X, and they will become afraid to think Y.

The problem is, the dem calculus about how many Americans are governable by the herding instinct, in contrast to their own logic and beliefs, is probably wrong. It just won’t work if the thing being done is sufficiently objectionable. Despite the theatre, the drowning out of opposition voices in the Town Halls by union goons, the opposition will remain, and will be articulated in the communications with Reps and Senators. In fact, the theatre will raise the temperature of those communications. It’s a considerably stupid move to stifle the voices. Better to let them vent. Then at least when the legislation is passed, it has an aura of acceptability, having been thrashed to death out in the open.

Americans, the American gene pool, over the years has not collected the herdable… quite the opposite. Venturing out to California through a land hostile in climate and occupants is not exactly for the feint of heart. All of the risky accomplishments of Americans over 200 years has not been of the feint of heart.

Gooning is stupid. It goes to show how fundamentally the dems do not understand the American people, the American spirit. They are probably thinking, instead, that this time around, they will get socialism right, and will set a new example for the world.

Stifling debate, stifling the voice of the American spirit is just the beginning. It is entirely non-productive theatre, as at the end of the day, the American spirit will not be convinced through the tactic of using fear of being different, fear of being separated from the herd. To be plain, it is a tactic of using fear as a motivator… which signals the intention to use a stick rather than a carrot.

The ‘turfing use of fear to motivate, when it does not work, will inevitably give way to another kind of motivator. Do we think it will be a carrot, or a stick?

Look out, for it is picking up the stick that is the instinctual action of the dems. When this particular stick fails to work, another, more sinister stick is probably held behind the back. This is not going anywhere pretty.
