Say, isn’t this Astroturfing?
posted at 10:55 am on August 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The White House and its allies have tossed around accusations of “astroturfing” — fake grassroots movements — at the opposition to ObamaCare with gusto, as town-hall meetings erupt in anger and acrimony towards elected officials who don’t bother to read bills before voting for them. They claim that powerful forces have pushed these overdressed people into these meetings, and that their strategies are coordinated from on high, rather than representing a truly sincere opposition.
If so, what does this latest missive from Barack Obama and the DNC mean?
Friend –
I wanted to send you an urgent invitation to an important Town Hall with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen on Thursday morning. She’ll be talking to constituents and gathering feedback — this is an ideal opportunity to make sure your support of health insurance reform is seen and heard at exactly the right time to make a huge difference.
Our congressional representatives are back home this month, and they’re facing more and more pressure from special interests on health insurance reform. It’s critical that we get out there and show them where we stand.
What: Health Care Town Hall with
Sen. Jeanne ShaheenWhere: Grafton Town Hall
E Grafton Rd.
Grafton, NH 03240When: Thursday, August 6th
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.Our representatives are under attack by Washington insiders, insurance companies, and well-financed special interests who don’t go a day without spreading lies and stirring up fear. We need to show that we’re sick and tired of it, and that we’re ready for real change, this year.
Please come to the Town Hall, and make sure that the most powerful voices in this debate are those calling for real reform, not angrily clamoring for the status quo.
RSVP here:
http://nh.barackobama.com/GraftonTH
Thanks,
Tim
Tim Arsenault
New Hampshire Field Director
Organizing for AmericaP.S. — Before the event, please print off a flyer to display and make sure that your support is visible.
That’s what Organizing for America, “a project of the Democratic National Committee,” has sent by e-mail to its campaign list. The flyer that the DNC wants people to hold as they outshout anyone else in the room can be seen here:

Because nothing says grassroots like the Obama campaign logo on the top, and Obama’s website URL on the bottom. That small print at the bottom reads, “Paid for by Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee … This communication is not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.”
Uh, sure … except for the Obama logo, the Obama URL, and the weird “Oh, thank you Dear Leader” message, who would think that it was authorized by Obama?
Update: Maybe the DNC and Obama campaign should have checked with Shaheen first:
There’s just one problem. NowHampshire.com contacted Shaheen’s office who confirms that the senator is in Washington and will not attend the town hall meeting. Staff will field questions in Grafton instead.
These are the people who want to run your health care.

I have just been watching this from Japan in utter awe. As bad as things are now, in the long run Obambi is starting to look like a gift to small government folks. It really makes me miss home.
But anyways, maybe by turning up the heat so quickly, the proverbial frog is about to jump out of the water.
I’ve even gotten my wife to watch the Townhall protests, which she finds amazing. And I’ve even gotten her calling Obambi Baka.
Good luck to all my friends back home and keep the pressure up! I just wish I was home to collect my insurance money to protest too!!!(sarc)

How rich is this hypocrisy.
Liberals have been spewing this hatred and violent fantasies against their political opponents for over 8 years now with the MSM totally ignoring it.
Now the Press and news channels would have you believe that the average middle aged American who up to this time has not committed any violent acts at these town halls are the real extremist and enemies.
If this is how the Obama administration want it, they will certainly get it because we are not going to back down.
Americans fighting each other in the streets will be the death knell of Mr. Hope and Change’s administration.
The Obama administration knows that anger and hatred are the only way they can get their base to respond since the facts and reality are not on their side.
So please liberals, carry out your threats of violence against people who simply want answers about how their money is being spent.
Show the world your bigotry and hate, the true face of the liberal movement.
The more liberals are being exposed, the more Americans are rejecting their insane ideology.
Watching their Messiah tank so fast in the pols is bearing this out.

Shouldn’t THE PRESIDENT stop using personal/commerical websites to advance his own adgenda?
There seems to be a ethical, possible illegal problem here.
This also makes me wonder if Obama has given up all the commerical interests he’s supposed to give up when sworn in. I don’t recall hearing about blind trusts or other devices being set up to separate/shield Obama from commerical enterprises. Maybe it happened, but where was the media detailing his holdings and activities like they did with Bush/Clinton/Bush/Reagan/Carter/etc.
Jason Coleman on August 6, 2009 at 12:42 PM
It’s simple. If you go to a town hall meeting, bring a sign with you that looks like this:
ACORN OPERATIVE —->
And then stand right next to anyone holding the “Thank You” flyer.
CurtZHP on August 6, 2009 at 12:48 PM
It’s also what the stunted drone workers were called in Brave New World.
My favorite scene in the book is when the “Delta” workers rioted and government trucks arrived on the scene, spewing tranquilizing Soma gas. As the drugged-up workers begin to stagger away, the trucks’ loudspeakers coo soothingly, “Good night, dear friends, good night, dear friends.”
I bet the blue dogs wish they had some Soma gas at their townhalls.

Everything they claim Republicans do, they’re actually doing. They’re trying to convince themselves their tactics are right because Republicans should be doing it too.

That is so true, yet, when I hear people like Rep Doggett say to Chrissie Mathews that seeing and hearing the “mob” at his town hall, it only makes him more determined to get this monstrosity passed.
Yet in the short term, I have to remember that the louder they object, there’s evidence they are scared s#itless.

What really makes me mad as shit about this type of thing is that my own Governor, Timmy Kaine, has abdicated his responsibilites to the people of Virginia; he has become a part-time governor and full-time partisan.
He took the chairmanship when our Republican dominated legislature made it clear that most of his BS would not pass. They shot his tax increases to pieces.
This is the kind of crap he spends his time on, partisan smear campaigns, rather than the business of the people who elected him.

WHO NEEDS THUGS, GOONS AND BROWN SHIRTS?
At least in our Congressional District (Illinois 14) the President and the AFL-CIO are wasting their time massing their troops to fight our attempts to confront our Congressman (Bill Foster) on the Healthcare bill. Foster’s website advertises a number of town-hall meetings over the next few weeks and we had planned to attend one or two of them, whether or not there would be brown shirts and union goons there to shout us down.
In glancing over the complete list, we noted that a number of the meetings were scheduled for early afternoons, and none of them were scheduled to run later than 6:00 p.m. I called his nearby office to inquire whether the Congressman had established those times as a deliberate attempt to avoid contact with people who have normal working hours. The “staffer” with whom I talked acknowledged that my concern seemed legitimate and she would “pass it along”, and she explained that the Congressman would not be attending any of those meetings himself – only “members of his staff”.
She went on to explain that the Congressman would be conducting a “telephone town hall meeting” at some time in the future but that the schedule for that event had not yet been established. In response to full particulars on how I might be reached, she assured me that I’d receive full information on the phone event and that I’d be “invited to participate”. We’ll see. If they correlate my name and address with any of the e-mails I’ve sent him regarding Cap and Trade and Healthcare, I suspect our “invitation” may somehow fall through the cracks.
Looks like Bill Foster’s plan is to hide from his constituents, at least until he begins to campaign for re-election next Spring. Bad plan. We won’t forget, and he’ll have no Obama coat-tails to carry him next year. I wonder how many others among Nancy’s little troopers are taking the same arrogant approach?
