Say, isn’t this Astroturfing?

posted at 10:55 am on August 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The White House and its allies have tossed around accusations of “astroturfing” — fake grassroots movements — at the opposition to ObamaCare with gusto, as town-hall meetings erupt in anger and acrimony towards elected officials who don’t bother to read bills before voting for them.  They claim that powerful forces have pushed these overdressed people into these meetings, and that their strategies are coordinated from on high, rather than representing a truly sincere opposition.

If so, what does this latest missive from Barack Obama and the DNC mean?

Friend –

I wanted to send you an urgent invitation to an important Town Hall with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen on Thursday morning. She’ll be talking to constituents and gathering feedback — this is an ideal opportunity to make sure your support of health insurance reform is seen and heard at exactly the right time to make a huge difference.

Our congressional representatives are back home this month, and they’re facing more and more pressure from special interests on health insurance reform. It’s critical that we get out there and show them where we stand.

I hope you can join us.

What: Health Care Town Hall with
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen

Where: Grafton Town Hall
E Grafton Rd.
Grafton, NH 03240

When: Thursday, August 6th
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

RSVP

Our representatives are under attack by Washington insiders, insurance companies, and well-financed special interests who don’t go a day without spreading lies and stirring up fear. We need to show that we’re sick and tired of it, and that we’re ready for real change, this year.

Please come to the Town Hall, and make sure that the most powerful voices in this debate are those calling for real reform, not angrily clamoring for the status quo.

RSVP here:

http://nh.barackobama.com/GraftonTH

Thanks,

Tim

Tim Arsenault
New Hampshire Field Director
Organizing for America

P.S. — Before the event, please print off a flyer to display and make sure that your support is visible.

That’s what Organizing for America, “a project of the Democratic National Committee,” has sent by e-mail to its campaign list.  The flyer that the DNC wants people to hold as they outshout anyone else in the room can be seen here:

Because nothing says grassroots like the Obama campaign logo on the top, and Obama’s website URL on the bottom.  That small print at the bottom reads, “Paid for by Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee … This communication is not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.”

Uh, sure … except for the Obama logo, the Obama URL, and the weird “Oh, thank you Dear Leader” message, who would think that it was authorized by Obama?

Update: Maybe the DNC and Obama campaign should have checked with Shaheen first:

There’s just one problem. NowHampshire.com contacted Shaheen’s office who confirms that the senator is in Washington and will not attend the town hall meeting. Staff will field questions in Grafton instead.

These are the people who want to run your health care.

I have just been watching this from Japan in utter awe. As bad as things are now, in the long run Obambi is starting to look like a gift to small government folks. It really makes me miss home.

But anyways, maybe by turning up the heat so quickly, the proverbial frog is about to jump out of the water.

I’ve even gotten my wife to watch the Townhall protests, which she finds amazing. And I’ve even gotten her calling Obambi Baka.

Good luck to all my friends back home and keep the pressure up! I just wish I was home to collect my insurance money to protest too!!!(sarc)

Odd how ‘dissent is no longer patriotic’. But then, the Democrats have come to the point where their hypocrisy no longer bothers them, and the MSM could hardly care less.

Nonetheless, he said the get-together was worthwhile.

“This is still the United States of America and people have the right to be heard,” Mr. McGovern said. “The meeting wasn’t perfect and it wasn’t always polite but I got the opportunity to express my view on the subject.”

How rich is this hypocrisy.
Liberals have been spewing this hatred and violent fantasies against their political opponents for over 8 years now with the MSM totally ignoring it.

Now the Press and news channels would have you believe that the average middle aged American who up to this time has not committed any violent acts at these town halls are the real extremist and enemies.

If this is how the Obama administration want it, they will certainly get it because we are not going to back down.

Americans fighting each other in the streets will be the death knell of Mr. Hope and Change’s administration.

The Obama administration knows that anger and hatred are the only way they can get their base to respond since the facts and reality are not on their side.

So please liberals, carry out your threats of violence against people who simply want answers about how their money is being spent.
Show the world your bigotry and hate, the true face of the liberal movement.
The more liberals are being exposed, the more Americans are rejecting their insane ideology.
Watching their Messiah tank so fast in the pols is bearing this out.

My favorite scene in the book is when the “Delta” workers rioted and government trucks arrived on the scene, spewing tranquilizing Soma gas. As the drugged-up workers begin to stagger away, the trucks’ loudspeakers coo soothingly, “Good night, dear friends, good night, dear friends.”

I bet the blue dogs wish they had some Soma gas at their townhalls.

He took the chairmanship when our Republican dominated legislature made it clear that most of his BS would not pass. They shot his tax increases to pieces.

This is the kind of crap he spends his time on, partisan smear campaigns, rather than the business of the people who elected him.

I got another lil’ note from BarackObama.com today – this one from Mitch Stewart, Director of Organizing for America…

Jim –

Members of Congress have been home for just a few days, and they’re already facing increased pressure from insurance companies, special interests, and partisan attack organizations that are spending millions to block health insurance reform.

These groups are using scare tactics and spreading smears about the President’s plan for reform, trying to incite constituents into lashing out at their representatives and disrupting their events.

The goal of these disruptions is for a few people to get a lot of media attention and hijack the entire public discourse. If they succeed, all Americans — Democrats, Republicans, and Independents — will continue to struggle under the broken status quo.

It’s up to us to show Congress that those loudly opposing reform are a tiny minority being stirred up by special interests, and that a huge majority strongly supports enacting real health insurance reform in 2009.

Your representative, Walter Jones, needs to hear that voters are demanding health insurance reform this year. Can you call the local office in Greenville? Let the person who answers know that you’re a constituent. Then tell them: “Please fight for real health insurance reform in 2009. Americans are suffering under the current system and need change.”

According to our records, you live in North Carolina’s 3rd congressional district. Please call:

Rep. Walter Jones at 252-931-1003.

Once you’ve made your call, click here to report it.

(Not your representative? Click here to look yours up.)

Calling should only take a few minutes, but it’s a huge help. These local offices serve as the main connection between a member of Congress and voters in the district. And with representatives home on recess, the staff there are in daily contact with your member, keeping them updated on how many calls they receive that are for or against reform.

Once you’ve called, please tell us. Knowing how many calls are coming in from all around the country will help us better plan our campaign — and help us show that the American people overwhelmingly want health insurance reform this year. Let us know you called:

http://my.barackobama.com/districtcall3?district=NC3&postal_code=27858

Thanks,

Mitch

Mitch Stewart
Director
Organizing for America

First of all, who the hell is Jim? I’m a girl, and my name is NOT Jim, or any derivative thereof.
Oh, and Mitch? I’ve already called Walter B. Jones’ office. Told him to vote against this unconscionable travesty of a health deform bill. Sure you want me to “report” that?
And – speaking of reporting, I did report your misrepresentation of the truth to flag@whitehouse.gov.

Hey – you’re welcome, Mitch. Anything I can do to help.

Some pretty nasty stuff going on there, if my memory serves me correctly.

That flier is hilarious. Barack Obama is now thanking himself…

What a tool.

There really is no end to his Narcissism, is there?

O.K., here’s the deal: I sent the following in response to the RSVP link in NH above *and* flag@whitehouse.gov:

Directions from the Axelrod in the White House down to you guys and out to me? if you don’t believe this isn’t, then how is this different than people of disparate backgrounds and political beliefs (Republican, Independent, Democrat) coming together to express their frustration on matters of public policy or government that affect their lives.

I sincerely think you all are “misunderestimating” the opposition to your “health care reform”. I suggest reading the attached posting from Hot Air. It says all I need to say most eloquently..(attached copy of “Who We Are H.A. post”)

..and I got an automated response from the NH people. So, I wonder if there’s a way to re-send all of the automated responses I receive from the NH people *back* to them and copy the White House address? That way those two could duke it out all afternoon filling up each other’s mail boxes and they’d — dare I speculate — drown in their own vomit.

..just a thought.

LOL I love it Voyska! A computer generated loop of automatically generated responses. Hmmmm…would it cause them to crash? One can hope!!

WHO NEEDS THUGS, GOONS AND BROWN SHIRTS?

At least in our Congressional District (Illinois 14) the President and the AFL-CIO are wasting their time massing their troops to fight our attempts to confront our Congressman (Bill Foster) on the Healthcare bill. Foster’s website advertises a number of town-hall meetings over the next few weeks and we had planned to attend one or two of them, whether or not there would be brown shirts and union goons there to shout us down.

In glancing over the complete list, we noted that a number of the meetings were scheduled for early afternoons, and none of them were scheduled to run later than 6:00 p.m. I called his nearby office to inquire whether the Congressman had established those times as a deliberate attempt to avoid contact with people who have normal working hours. The “staffer” with whom I talked acknowledged that my concern seemed legitimate and she would “pass it along”, and she explained that the Congressman would not be attending any of those meetings himself – only “members of his staff”.

She went on to explain that the Congressman would be conducting a “telephone town hall meeting” at some time in the future but that the schedule for that event had not yet been established. In response to full particulars on how I might be reached, she assured me that I’d receive full information on the phone event and that I’d be “invited to participate”. We’ll see. If they correlate my name and address with any of the e-mails I’ve sent him regarding Cap and Trade and Healthcare, I suspect our “invitation” may somehow fall through the cracks.

Looks like Bill Foster’s plan is to hide from his constituents, at least until he begins to campaign for re-election next Spring. Bad plan. We won’t forget, and he’ll have no Obama coat-tails to carry him next year. I wonder how many others among Nancy’s little troopers are taking the same arrogant approach?

It’s up to us to show Congress that those loudly opposing reform are a tiny minority being stirred up by special interests, and that a huge majority strongly supports enacting real health insurance reform in 2009.

This is the most absurd part of that email.

creepy creepy creepy

Terrye on August 6, 2009 at 5:39 PM

What could be better we get one of the two options.

1. Great video footage of citizens speaking out in opposition of a crappy healthcare bill.

or

2. Great video footage of concerned citizens being shouted down by Obama’s thugs when they try to speak out.

Neither will look good for Obama in the end. He’s riding a stinker of an issue that he’s too stuborn to realize that he’s losing.

Scrappy on August 6, 2009 at 5:51 PM

Stupid woman caller on Sean Hannity says it is okay to debate Obama’s health care at the town hall meetings, but those that are debating are just too inflamed. “They are not having civilized conversations, they are just shouting everyone down”. Gosh, who does that sound like? Nothing like a bit of projection by Democrats who don’t know how to debate anything.

I am going to have to turn off the radio, too many Lib idiots calling.

A computer generated loop of automatically generated responses.

Michael Steele’s response to the DNC ad threats was to redirect all calls back to the DNC.

I just signed up for new insurance yesterday and was asked to do something that got me to thinking. As always, they asked for a voided check to collect the premium. If this ObamaCare thing went through, would premiums of some kind be collected? If so, how? I certainly ain’t going to give the government a voided check.

UnderstandingisPower on August 6, 2009 at 6:18 PM

Is this where the right and the left will meet their final battle – at town halls around America? This is getting scary folks.

KickandSwimMom on August 6, 2009 at 12:10 PM

It will only be the beginning.
