Report: Violence breaks out at Tampa town hall on health care

posted at 9:19 pm on August 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

The toll: “At least one fistfight” plus “shoving and scuffles.” No word on who started it, how many people were involved, etc, but if the left can turn a memo sent to 10 people by a guy who’s not even a Republican into a nationwide GOP astroturfing conspiracy, surely it can turn some chanting and a fistfight into Kristallnacht. I look forward to MSNBC’s coverage tomorrow.

From what I can tell, it was a protester who got the worst of it. The Teamsters’ handiwork, perchance?

Several of the protestor’s signs bore an image of Obama with his face painted as the Joker, an image that drew protests of racism locally when it appeared on a Web site thought to be associated with the Pinellas Republican party…

One of those involved in a scuffle, Randy Arthur, of Oldsmar said he was injured by those manning the doors and said he would file a police report.

He and his wife, Kathy, were outside the meeting room when organizers tried to close the doors. Randy Arthur and others tried to stop them “and he didn’t give up,” Kathy Arthur said.

Randy Arthur, who owns an air conditioning service company, later talked to police officers, his knit shirt ripped and a few scratches visible on his chest. “They slammed him into the wall,” Kathy Arthur said…

“They’re hiding from their constituents. She works for us and needs to listen,” said Karen Jaroch, a Tampa homemaker and organizer for the 9-12 Project, set up by rightist TV commentator Glenn Beck.

If all they’re going to do is scream, they belong outside. Disrupting the event itself when people are trying to listen is a jackass thing to do, and totally counterproductive in terms of handing the left material with which to tar the GOP. Which reminds me: Since this is bound to be used against Republicans, what exactly is the logic behind the theory that Republicans are organizing it as part of an astroturf campaign? Said the Florida Democratic Party chair after tonight’s fiasco, “Recently, their thoughtful discussions are being interrupted by angry mobs – well funded and organized by Washington special interests – attempting to drown out the voices of the hard-working Floridians who are desperate for health insurance reform.” Well-funded Washington special interests are trying to win the media war … by telling people to get into fistfights? Nuance.

President Obama’s top priority for Congress is health care reform. Insurance companies are spending over a million dollars a day lobbying against the reform, while feeding myths and fears to America. It will take the same grassroots energy that got Obama elected to see the change we voted for. Our work isn’t over.

Build support for health care reform with U.S. PIRG. Mobilize activists to cut the cost of health care, expand coverage, and stop sick from getting dropped by insurance companies. Go out in your community and make change happen. Make friends and money along the way.

Earn $400-$600 per week. To apply for a job, call Chris at 612-331-1434.

The Fund for the Public Interest has been working for over 25 years with organizations such as Sierra Club, Environment America, Human Rights Campaign, Progressive Future and U.S. PIRG to win concrete victories for the public interest. The left keeps this up, they might win in the short run, but will pay at the polls in 2010. People are pissed because they believe they’re being lied to and that they are not being listened to by their supposed representatives.

What part of “Don’t lie to me” doesn’t Steny Hoyer not understand?

Moderate in the Middle had this comment from the WTSP site:

SEIU & Castor organize a townhall and announce it at the last minute as to reduce opposition voices. The townhall was packed 1/2 w SEIU people.

When supporters of healthcare freedom (ie, anti-BigGovHealth demonstrators) were prevented access to the townhall they began to shout, bang windows & doors.

The left loves this. Please, protesters, think about your countrymen and women. We do not need this.

Mommypundit on August 6, 2009 at 9:36 PM

People are pissed off. No one needs to organize their anger. Because you are so far removed from it, i.e., it is not your problem, doesn’t mean others are. For once, try to hide your disdain for people who don’t live in Manhanttan or get off the healthcare beat.

I noticed that there was no violence until the left startted threatening the citizens who were showing up to these peaceful yet lour protests for months.

Suddenly, everyone is a “mob” and an “extremist” and “Nazis” and the next thing you know, the White House, the DNC, MSDNC, and various other outlets are screaming about “danger” and “violence.”

And just like that, on the eve the White House tells UNION ORGANIZERS to “get in their faces,” violence breaks out.

Coincidence? Not likely.

Why isn’t the White House being blamed for stoking violence here? Weren’t they just advocating today that unions should be confronting these protesters and getting in their faces? And “pushing back twice as hard?”

Well, the day the White House advocates and encourages confrontation with the protesters (who up until today and for months prior, coincidentally, were peaceful) have suddenly “broken out” into violence?

We can fight this battle at a time and a place of our choosing. We have the majority on our side. We do not have to go to them. We can hold our own town halls. We can post them on youtube.

Make a cardboard cutout of your representative. Stand them at a microphone—then civilly and clearly pepper it with questions. The silence and absence on part of the rep will be deafening. The mere asking of the questions are enough. The truth is, there are no answers to the questions. We do NOT need the REPs to ask the questions and be heard. We can do it without them.

Let me tell you this, liberals are always trying to bait people. However, no matter how much you want to, you cannot and should not succumb to temptation.

I’ve had men twice my age get inches from my face, and tell 80 year old WWII vets to drop dead, just to get us riled up. I’ve been surrounded by 25-30 liberals up against a wall with only two buddies with me, screaming in our faces about how we should go die in Iraq.

They do these things so you get into a physical confrontation with them. Then, they can call the police and get you escorted OUT.

All the newbs to this protest business need to take notes.
Relax.
Calm down. Make your point with a huge sign. That is what you need. Yelling and acting like a mob is counter productive and turns many potential allies off.

One of those involved in a scuffle, Randy Arthur, of Oldsmar said he was injured by those manning the doors and said he would file a police report.

These people, who were obvious about who’s side they were on, were singled out as they tried to gain entry.

Force was used to keep them out obviously.

I would bet this would reflect badly on the Democrats if anyone has the GUTS to follow up on the details of who the “doorman” was and what were his instructions.

These people, who were obvious about who’s side they were on, were singled out as they tried to gain entry.

Force was used to keep them out obviously.

I would bet this would reflect badly on the Democrats if anyone has the GUTS to follow up on the details of who the “doorman” was and what were his instructions.

I’m sure someone in line is furiously getting home to download their video now. There is just too much coverage of this to have something like that missed, particularly at the choke point like the front door.

As if civility is going to make a difference here. You are all fools if you believe that. The yeller will be heard even if his words are not. The message will come later, when the attention is on him. It is the left playbook coming back at them and they don’t like it.

There are a lot of things politicians can get away with in Washington that won’t flush at home. Local media will know if local citizens are kept out of meetings by the importing of unions and other organizations. They just want a story, they don’t have anything to gain by skewing the rhetoric.

Here’s what the Democrats aren’t figuring in … okay, well – it’s JUST ONE THING they aren’t figuring into their brilliant plans …

Every one of those protesters has friends and relatives who weren’t at the meeting. All of those protesters will go home and tell the story of how Democracy is dieing in America. It’s like if you run a business and treat your customers like shite – they leave and never come back – and they also tell their friends not to give you any business also.

I just LOVE this! I used to think that suicide bombers were the ultimate stupid – but they are supposed to be stupid. Politicians are supposed to have some sense of survival about them! LOL – NOT THESE!

Not likely.

DEMOCRAT STRATEGY.
