Pelosi: Beware of astroturfers carrying swastikas

posted at 1:00 pm on August 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

Normally we don’t recycle the quote of the day for a new post but when the Speaker of the House starts babbling about Nazi symbolism, it merits extra attention. Riddle me this: Isn’t the point of astroturfing to create the perception that your viewpoint is more popular among the grassroots than it really is? It’s a tactic to boost your legitimacy, in other words: Good, hard-working Americans have seen the wisdom of your position and rallied passionately to your side. But if this is all a big ‘turf op orchestrated by the GOP, why on earth would Republicans be sending people out carrying signs with swastikas? There’s no faster way to delegitimize yourself as a crank, even if the swastika on the sign is meant as a derogatory symbol for the Democrats’ socialist aspirations. It’s Godwin’s law in action. Which means Pelosi’s theory is that the GOP has organized a massive covert PR campaign … aimed at discrediting itself? This is the steel-trap mind that’s helping to plan your medical coverage in the decades ahead.

Oh, another minor detail per Wizbang: Apparently there’s zero evidence of anyone actually carrying a swastika aside from a few testimonies in the comments at, um, Daily Kos. I have heard of one person carrying a sign with the SS symbol, in which one of the S’s reportedly stood for — you guessed it — socialism. Thankfully the left’s never done anything like that. Exit question via Andrew Breitbart: Why can’t the Democrats just pass what they want to pass with their supermajority and stop whining incessantly about Birthers and mobs or whatever? The answer, I think, is that the whole “mob” meme is effective only insofar as it creates the impression that the GOP is the stumbling block to ObamaCare, which of course is an outright lie. It’s the Blue Dogs who are holding things up for fear of a backlash in their purplish districts if they vote for socialized medicine. Which brings us back to the astroturf smear: If the left’s so sure this is all a psy op by Republicans and that Joe Public’s gung ho to run health care into a collectivist ditch, then the Blue Dogs should call the GOP’s bluff and pass whatever Obama wants. Then, when they’re all reelected next year, the great conservative fraud will be proved and The One will have a great victory, no? Put up or shut up, kids.

Update: Since the nutroots’ own fondness for astroturfing extends all the way to taking orders over the phone from Barack Obama, doesn’t it make more sense to think at least some of the cranks at these events are false-flag operations organized by the left? I have no evidence for my theory, but then, er, neither do they for theirs.

MSM will be quoting Pelosi as to their existence. Before long, the presence of swastikas at GOP rallies and townhall meetings will be an accepted “fact” among the media. Just like with all the “racism” and “screaming hate” at Palin rallies last fall.

Well I for one have to keep reminding myself when I am told by my GOP handlers that I am heading to a Town Hall on Healthcare and NOT the Nuremberg rally. (/sarc)

You make a great point, AP. Why is the GOP trying to marginalize itself by putting on Nazi regalia and why oh why, if the GOP is so desperate and so out of power, then the dems don’t just stuff it through the Senate and be through with it? The answer is that come November is that they want a “bi-partisan bill”. Meaning they can say “well its not OUR fault you are stuck with bad healthcare, the GOP voted for it too”.

This can’t end well. I predict progroms against anyone in Tommy Hilfiger’s fall collection.

Ted Torgerson on August 6, 2009 at 1:08 PM

My email to flag@whitehouse.gov:

I would like to inform you of some ”fishy” statements being made in the healthcare debate.

Nancy Pelosi stated that concerned and outspoken citizens at townhall meetings were displaying swastikas and other similar symbols (she gave no examples as proof of this claim). Certainly fear-mongering statements like that do not do anything to clarify the debate or bring more people into agreement with Congress and the President’s plans for healthcare insurance reform.

By the way, great work on this snitch program, I’ve been thinking it’s long overdue that we add more intrusion of the government into the free speech and political dialog of private citizens. Although it’s odd that the Patriot act was so demonized by the people who would enact a program like this. Kudos.

Saddam Hussein. Here’s a guy that bluffed his way straight into a hangmans noose. He had no (or very little) WMDs laying around, nor a program to produce same. Yet, he said he “wanted everyone to believe he did” so he could maintain an appearance of being a major threat and force the Western powers to “negotiate” in his favor.

GWB took the bluff seriously and decided that the bluffer had to go.

Incorrect, allah. You continue to fail to see what is all too obvious: the left is trying to push this nation to civil war. That is not just the unintended consequence of some retarded flailing on their part, but their goal. I tried to expain this to you about The Precedent, but you refuse to learn. Time after time, there are policies and arguments coming out of the Washington junta that do nothing but destabilize this nation and bring the citizenry to a boil and you look, time after time, for some reasoned strategy behind it that has something to do with policy differences and political posturing. That is not what we are dealing with. How many more of these insane missives need to come from the Washington junta for you to finally throw in the towel and admit to what is so painfully obvious – the Washington junta wants this nation to burn if they don’t get everything they want (which includes them being installed as the new royalty and peerage). The Washington junta are Saddam Hussein, getting ready to dump 40,000,000 barrels of oil into the gulf and ligth just about every single oil well in Kuwait on fire – all because they are not being allowed to rob the US dry.

The Washington junta will push America to civil war, not by mistake and not by chance, but by design. Maybe, after the 3,621st time they pull this you will learn? Or maybe it won’t be until the fighting actually erupts?

So Granny McBotox has decided that all my friends, relatives, neighbors, acquaintances, colleagues, etc., who took a day off work to attend a Tea Party or a Congressional town hall meeting — most likely driving there in their minivans — are…Nazis! Great strategery there, Nan. Calling ‘em all Nazis. That’s really gonna get ‘em on your side.

I can just hear them all now, sitting on the sidelines at their kids’ soccer game in their little soccer mom chairs saying, “Oh, I was opposed to Obama’s socialized health care until, you know, I found out that the people opposed to it are actually Nazis. Now I’m for it. All the way. Gosh, I don’t wanna be a Nazi.”

I’ve been saying that for weeks. If the Dems truly believe this just a small group of extremists out there who are content with the status quo, then vote for the damn bill and run proudly on your record next year.

Of course we know that it’s not a small minority that’s opposed to this. The Dems need political cover which is why they’re desperate not only for Blue Dogs to get on board, but some of the GOP as well. The problem is the GOP already got burned last year with TARP, so they’re not likely to get suckered in again.

This, of course, also makes me at least hesitate when I hear the allegations of death threats made to Brad Miller (D-NC). The quoted caller said “Miller could lose his life over this”; my concern is Miller could lose his life if what? If he votes for the bill? or against it? The caller (if he’s real) didn’t say. And I wouldn’t put it past the cranks that read Daily Kos to employ this weapon against their own as an attempt to smear the GOP.

Recently fired Leftist cartoonist Ted Rall had this to say a few years ago

Lately we’re being told that it’s either (a) inappropriate or (b) untrue to refer to Bush’s illegitimate junta as Nazi, neo-Nazi or neofascist. Because, you know, you’re not necessarily a Nazi just because you seize power like one, take advantage of a national Reichstag Fire-like tragedy like one, build concentration and death camps like one, start unprovoked wars like one, Red-bait your liberal opponents like one or create a national security apparatus that behaves like something a Nazi would create and even has a Nazi-sounding name.

All of those people who see a little Adolf in the not-so-bright eyes of America’s homeland-grown despot are just imagining things.

Me, I’m catching it for this week’s cartoon for daring to suggest that, well–you know.

Of course, there are differences. Hitler, for example, was legally elected. And he had a plan–not one that I like, but a plan–for the period after the war.

I’ll be happy to stop comparing Bush to Hitler when he stops acting like him.

And Harvey Wasserman of Greenpeace had this gem of wisdom:

This unelected regime—Hitler also came to power with a minority of votes—has used the terrible tragedies of September 11 in much the way the Nazis jumped on the Reichstag fire.

Del Dolemonte on August 6, 2009 at 1:29 PM

People here have no doubt noticed this, but: Pelosi is doing what I’ve seen people online doing for months. The message is: You conservatives are crazy and dangerous, and you look like fools and nazis – sit down and shut up.

Meanwhile, they “get in our faces”.

This mentality of the left is what is dangerous, in my opinion…and they are running the country. THEY have power. Whether regular concerned Americans can win in the face of this barrage of propaganda and “to hell with what presidents used to do” mentality is a real question – but there is no question who is dangerous. And it isn’t US.

There were no lobbyist-funded buses in the parking lot of Mardela Middle and High School on Tuesday evening, and the hundreds of Eastern Maryland residents who packed the school’s auditorium loudly refuted the notion that their anger over the Democrats’ health care reform plans is “manufactured.

“I went to school in this school,” a man named Bob told me. “I don’t see anyone in this room that isn’t from Mardela Springs right now.”

“We’ve been quiet too long,” said a woman named Joan.

Calling everyday Americans that want Answers about how their money is being spent a bunch of nazis and mobsters might make political sense in Berkeley and Chicago, but it will certainly ensure that the democrats and their Messiah keep in the downward spiral that they have created for themselves.

We are not Chicago.

We will not be bullied.

We are not stupid.

We will not give up.

The Washington junta will push America to civil war, not by mistake and not by chance, but by design.

progressoverpeace on August 6, 2009 at 1:16 PM

Seems obvious to me that the left intends to further inflame the country. My only question is whether they intend to stop at the edge of open rebellion, or to push us over it.

They have no shame. They have no honor. They have no morality.

Redundant. They wouldn’t be a leftist if they were people of character.

I’m not sure I agree with the goals you outlined, but I definitely agree that they are deliberately destroying the economy and inciting Americans in order to bring about a massive national crisis.

Daggett on August 6, 2009 at 1:24 PM

As I see it, originally, only The Precedent wanted to burn this nation down (as his main goal) while the bulk of the Washington junta was more concerned with a total government takeover of the nation (and their total takeover of that government) – the useful idiots working for the nihilist. The left wanted to push all of their pet projects, forcing industry to die, save those lucky companies that the leftist government deigned to save (and thus control) forcing people to do whatever they decided was “right”, … But as the public has pushed back against the leftists, their attitude has changed. As they see that they might not get everything they wanted, in terms of total government control, they have gotten very ticked off and decided that, if they can’t have this nation structured exactly as they want, then no one can have this nation. In this, they have now come to where The Precedent was from the beginning (as he was always out to just exact revenge on us). The left is playing scorched Earth, but not so much as some sort of strategy. Instead, they have just decided that if America doesn’t want exactly what they want, then America will burn. The groundwork for this was laid in the left’s tribalization of society and pitting groups against each other, and now they are just trying to throw matches on it.

At least, that’s how I see this as having generally unfolded.

What Liberals fail to realize it that they have adopted a racially cleansed version of National Socialism, so in fact Democrats are the new Nazis. The Nazis dehumanized the Jews, Democrats dehumanize all of humanity and firmly believe there is some life that is “unworthy of life”, a central aspect of Nazism. This is all done by claiming to be “compassionate” for who would want to live suffering through life not being loved or wanted? Evil pure and simple.

Foolish on their part since we have all the guns and most of the military hail from Red America.
