68-31, with just nine Republicans voting yes. The era of voting based on qualifications is now well and truly dead, having fallen into a coma a few years ago when The One decided he couldn’t vote for Roberts and Alito because they didn’t have big enough hearts or something. The GOP’s going to play his game from now on. Oh well.
All but one of 60 Dems voted for Sotomayor; Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) missed the vote. Ailing Sens. Robert Byrd (D-WV) and Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) appeared on the floor in wheelchairs to vote yes.
Nine GOPers voted for her: Sens. Lamar Alexander (TN), Kit Bond (MO), Susan Collins (ME), Lindsey Graham (SC), Judd Gregg (NH), Dick Lugar (IN), Mel Martínez (FL), Olympia Snowe (ME) and George Voinovich (OH).
The official swearing in is on Saturday. I don’t know what’s left to say at this point after weeks of blather, except maybe that there’s a fair chance of a bona fide Chris Matthews racial leg thrill this afternoon on “Hardball.” He had one just yesterday, in fact, in response to Clinton bringing home those two journalists from North Korea. Can he muster another today or does he need more, er, “recovery time”?
Update: Just to make it a little more painful for conservatives, Stuart Smalley did the honors.

Agreed. I just hope she does not hold that the second amendment was simply rhetorical flourish that fell flat.

Make no mistake. We will rue this day.

“The GOP’s going to play his game from now on.”
How do you figure that? Our Affirmative Action President nominated an Affirmative Action candidate for SCOTUS. So that means conservative senators should just roll over and vote for her? The woman was/is dishonest. That’s a ‘nice to have’ on the Supreme Court.
GarandFan on August 6, 2009 at 5:50 PM
Rejoice…Rosie Sotomayor’s confirmation today is proof positive you can rise from humble beginnings bolstered by afirmative action to overcome unremarkable intellect and mind-numbing mediocrity, armed only with a big heart and a kick-ass latin backbeat to hold one of the highest judicial posts in the land! Hosanna! Hosanna Barry Obama!

You expected different? BO played it exactly as I expect he would have because he is a leftest liberal and it’s always about them. Even after a couple of years of overexposure to BO I’m surprised that conservatives are surprised at what he does. Liberals aren’t really very bright and pretty transparent when it comes to what they will do. Kind of like little children really. I think the real problem is that conservatives view them as being intelligent adults so in a way it really is the fault of the conservatives that we have gotten to where we are.

She still isn’t wise.
And she’s still a fat bag of racist tallow.

You were being generous.

So now we have another Goldberg clone on the court. Hopefully the four conservative members and Kennedy stay healthy. It doesn’t change the mixture but it makes the split worse. We now have four “total nutcases” sitting on the supreme court. One more and any hope is gone.

You might add Senator Menendez’ slam. “They don’t want a Hispanic on the Supreme Court.”
I don’t know about anyone else, but I getting pretty sick of this crap. Mobs, racists, extremists, enemy lists…
This is what our (non-representative) government thinks of their constituents. They don’t fear us, they abuse us, and in any number of ways. And we wonder why we lose more liberty every time we turn around.
“When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” –Thomas Jefferson

Those four better have some good bodyguards. All that is needed for the Left to have Absolute Power is a Pelican Brief incident… and presto!

Just look for another or two lib justice to retire. If this happens, with the d’s in control and the rino’s voting against our Republic the 1st, 2nd, and all others the Founding Fathers gave us. My country is….

I hope Thomas, Alito and Roberts go out for drinks tonight. They deserved so much better when they went through their hearings.
Domino on August 6, 2009 at 7:05 PM
Got to disagree AP- Republicans who voted against her did vote against her qualifications- specifically her repeated statements that she could not be unbiased. As I’ve said before, such beliefs are not only a violation of her judicial oath but also render her ineligible even to serve on a jury.
Jay Mac on August 6, 2009 at 7:19 PM
No. Unfortunately, I didn’t expect any better of him. I don’t think anybody else did either. And while I’m no fan of Lindsay Graham, who let her out of committee, the sad fact is that he’s not the bad guy here. The bad guy.. is the guy who didn’t give us any reason to expect he could or would make a better selection if this one failed. You almost can’t blame Republican Senators who believed that Sotomayor was the lesser of other, more liberal evils. Almost.
It’s just sad that we couldn’t expect more from Barack Obama, and that none of us are really surprised by it.
Murf76 on August 6, 2009 at 7:21 PM
Quite frankly, with the number of them crawling over the border on the sly, not to mention the hordes of them that are already here…I really don’t want a Hispanic on the highest bench in the land!
Guess that will mark me as a confirmed sheethead to the libtards and cowards. Oh well.

I had always thought that Scalia was the first Hispanic. I had this memory that he was the first Hispanic appointed.
JellyToast on August 6, 2009 at 11:22 PM
oops,,, first Italian. I knew it was the first something.
JellyToast on August 6, 2009 at 11:25 PM
As Shumer said a few days ago,Latino’s are the fastest
growing in America!
Another words,Shumer expects that the Liberal Party
has cememted the Latino vote,by putting Sotomayer on
the Supreme Court!
Again, for the Left, its what can you do for the Democrat
Party!!
