ABC: “Strong indication” that Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud is dead in U.S. airstrike; Update: Mehsud’s alive, says U.S. intel official
posted at 5:44 pm on August 6, 2009 by Allahpundit
Biiiiig fish, if true. Word of the drone strike broke yesterday with reports that a missile had hit his father-in-law’s house, killing one of Mehsud’s wives and an unidentified second person. A family member swore that Mehsud himself wasn’t there, but ABC’s got a hot lead:
“There is strong indication” that Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a U.S. drone strike Wednesday, a senior administration official told ABC News…
A Pakistani official confirmed the report but said they are awaiting 100 percent confirmation and DNA tests.
U.S. officials say they do not have physical evidence yet but there are “indicators” and they are hopeful about obtaining DNA tests. A CIA drone targeted the house of Mehsud’s second father-in-law, Akramud Din, Wednesday.
I e-mailed Bill Roggio, who says he hasn’t heard anything from his sources and that the Taliban would likely have announced this already if it were true. This wouldn’t be the first false alarm about this turd either; read my post on the last one, from last September, to see just how big a fish he is/was. Pakistan’s made killing him a top priority since mid-June, after the Taliban started to encroach on Islamabad. The drone strike that killed 60 jihadis at a Taliban funeral eight days later was likely aimed at him, as of course was the strike on his father-in-law’s home.
While we wait for more news, here’s Obama counterterror czar John Brennan declaring the global war on terror over and the “war on Al Qaeda” officially begun. Where Iran or Hezbollah or Hamas fits into the new matrix, I don’t know yet. My guess is that Brennan doesn’t either. Click the image to watch.
Update: Whether Mehsud is dead or not, the fact that he’s under such intense fire these days shows how much power Pakistani intelligence has over jihadist kingpins. This filthbag ran around unmolested for years; then, suddenly, after threatening Islamabad this year, his whereabouts became sufficiently well known that he ended up dodging missiles every other week and might finally be dead less than two months after Pakistan went after him in earnest. I wonder how long it would take to dismantle Al Qaeda if ISI jumped into the effort with both feet. A year? Six months?
Update: Roggio is forever breaking my heart.
“Baitullah is alive,” one official old The Long War Journal. “We’re aware of the reports that he might have been killed and we are looking into it, but we don’t believe he was killed.”…
Witnesses on the scene immediately said that Baitullah was not among those killed. He reportedly visited his wife but left an hour prior to the attack…
The Taliban have not issued a statement to confirm or deny Baitullah’s death. In the past, the Taliban and al Qaeda have released martyrdom statements upon the death of their senior leaders.
Reports of senior al Qaeda and Taliban leaders killed in Pakistan have been highly unreliable. In the past, Al Qaeda leaders Ayman al Zawahiri, Abd al Hadi al Iraqi, Abu Obaidullah Al Masri, Adam Gadahn, Ibn Amin, and Rashid Rauf have been reported killed in strikes, but these men have later resurfaced. Sa’ad bin Laden was reported killed is now thought to be alive. And Abu Khabab al Masri was reported killed several times before he finally was killed during a July 2008 strike.

Too many irresponsible fools in the White House. “War on Al-Qaeda.”
Terror exists in South America (FARC, Chavez) and around the globe. So the imbecile that made a focus group to capture a better wording for the wars we’re in is a jackass.

Good to see the Saudi demand for respect for Islam is still being tightly enforced. Pathetic to see the time it took for the Saudis to revamp the dictates that Bush operated under. Thats Islam for you, never up to speed.
The magnificent Pakistanis have shed rivers of blood and killed millions of Americas enemies, time to pay the piper infidels.
Why would brothers betray brothers in reality? The theater that the Pakistanis are putting on has no intent to impinge on the march of Islam. What is troublesome is people who still want to believe what Muslims tell them.

Gibbs: “Earlier today, we learned through the grapevine that a man made disaster was killed. Because we are so tough on terrorism, we have decided to prosecute the drone to the fullest extent of the law. This drone acted beyond the course and scope of its duties and therefore we will surrender immediately. Unfortunately, we are not at this time fully knowledgable about who we should surrender to or the name of the man made disaster that we mistakenly killed because of Bush. WE are monitoring the blogosphere for updates.
But. Let me be clear. We have pre-loaded TOTUS with sunny platitudes and apologies that TOTUS will deliver as soon as we can find out who will get the apology.”

Let me clue you in: We’re not at war with them.
Al Qaeda attacked us and killed thousands of Americans on US soil (and off).
Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas have not attacked America. Thus it would be silly for us to be at war with them. So we’re not.
That doesnt mean we’re best buds. There’s middle ground between “close allies” and “war”. There are numerous other options.
What’s wrong with the fact that we’re not at war with Iran? Need a new Middle Eastern country to invade? The last ones havent gone that well.

We are engaged in a struggle with all Islamic terror groups. Hizb’allah has killed Americans in the past.
I don’t know why people insist on looking at things in a black and white way (AQ/non AQ).
AQ has affiliations around the globe.
We’re bound to a mistake if we pursue this “AQ only” approach.
All other Islamist groups should be forewarned. And they should be considered enemies the minute they engage an American ally, interest, or affiliate themselves with AQ in any way.

A good
terroristAl Qaeda.Johan Klaus on August 6, 2009 at 6:49 PM
Technically those groups have not attacked the continental US. However Hezbollah did attack the US Embassy in Beirut in 1983. Furthermore, Hezbollah is most likely responsible for the bombing of the US Marine barracks. Iran has always provided aid to Hezbollah through munitions and training by the Padasran so they are just as culpable as Hezbollah.
Regardless, to specify the War on Terror as the War on Al-Qaeda is simply retarded and a waste of time. If you look at the Islamic militant groups in Iraq as well as in Afghanistan (i.e. the Haqqani Network), the “bad guys” are not all al-Qaeda. Should we name a specific war for our fight against those smaller groups?

heshtesh on August 6, 2009 at 7:49 PM
True. We’re also engaged in a struggle with North Korea. But we’re not at war with them.
In another forum, I earlier said just the same thing!
Except I was saying “Why does every disagreement have to be ‘WAR’? Why cant we say, ‘yes, we have conflicting interests with Iran’? Why do we have to assume that we’re either close allies with another group or we’re at WAR? Are there no other options?”
No one is saying that we shouldnt protect ourselves against anybody who doesnt call themselves Al Qaeda. Just that it makes sense to limit “war” to the guys who attacked us.
Another advantage to limiting the war to Al Qaeda: Al Qaeda can be defeated. “Terror” cannot. Doesnt it make some strategic sense to only declare war when it’s at least possible to win?
Why does the comment not include Iran?
orange on August 6, 2009 at 7:50 PM
What’s with that photo? I can see it now, on the Daily Show: “Is America bombing Jesus?”
disa on August 6, 2009 at 8:02 PM
I don’t think anyone is actually advocating sending US forces into Lebanon and Gaza to fight and kill Hezbollah and Hamas. I think the disagreement lies in that Obama has chosen to ratchet down the rhetoric at a time when we should not be providing any kind of comfort to our enemies. Also war does not always have to be a “kinetic” conflict to be considered a war. Look at the Cold War for instance. The US and the Soviet Union were definitely in a conflict, however our forces were not fighting in the Fulda Gap. The US should be lending aid as a means to carry on the war against Islamic extremist organizations. We should not be loosening our rhetoric or support to regimes fighting radical Islam.
In the end this “War on Al-Qaeda” b.s. is a stupid political calculation that will not advance our interests any further than before.
Shock the Monkey on August 6, 2009 at 8:18 PM
Well, by that logic, when would we ratchet down the rhetoric? When do we want to provide comfort to enemies?
And if we dont ratchet down the rhetoric, then we necessarily put ourselves in a war we cannot win. That doesnt seem wise.
Well, but that’s why that one was called the Cold War.
So you prefer being in a never-ending war that, by definition, we can never win?
BTW, thank you for the thoughtful response.

AZfederalist on August 6, 2009 at 11:13 PM
I am not sure how you came to some of these conclusions, but let me attempt to clarify a few things. When does one ratchet down the rhetoric? When one has accomplished its main objective. For instance, as Hezbollah will likely lose political power in Lebanon in the upcoming years, the volume and tone of the rhetoric coming from our politicians can quiet down. With a marginalized enemy in Lebanon, there is no need for harsh rhetoric. Nowhere did I say that the war of words needs to be ongoing, and it certainly doesn’t have to be ongoing.
Once again I’m not sure how you came to this deduction. I merely said that Obama (stupidly) calculatingly changed the title as a means to distance himself from the Bush Administration’s War on Terror in not so many words. This silly change only gives the impression that we are in weakened state since we are “ratcheting down the rhetoric.” People in a state of extreme strength or weakness do such a thing, and we certainly not in a position of strength in Afghanistan.
While this is a stupid argument, you must understand that strong rhetoric is an excellent substitute for 60,000 US troops in your backyard.
