Video: Hoyer’s townhall roiled by well-dressed sophisticates

posted at 2:15 pm on August 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier, a video of Barbara Boxer dismissed protesters at town-hall meetings as obvious fakes because, as Boxer explained, they’re too well-dressed to be sincerely angry about health care. The College Politico has an answer in this clip from Steny Hoyer’s attempt to pontificate to a hostile and casually-attired crowd.  The older voters in this row wear shorts, t-shirts, and apparently Democratic Party registration cards:

The gentleman with the obviously-expensive cap gets the zinger of the day by challenging Hoyer on how Congress could try to force the takeover of the American health-care industry in roughly a fifth of the time it took Barack Obama to pick out a dog for his kids.  Instead of answering, Hoyer goes into a long dissertation about the Erie Canal, and how naysayers probably existed back then as well.

The Erie Canal?  That’s the best Hoyer can do?  The canal was built in 1825.  Maybe Hoyer remembers it personally, but for voters everywhere and especially the ones arrayed in front of him in this clip, it’s about as relevant as the Bering ice bridge.  Sticking with that, though, the Erie Canal project was just that — a project with a start, a middle, and an end.  The federal government didn’t have anything to do with the Erie Canal, either; it was built by the state of New York after President Thomas Jefferson rejected the idea as “little short of madness”.  It initially cost $7 million, and paid off well — for the state of New York.

Why would Hoyer expect people in Maryland to feel affectionate about a canal that has nothing to do with them?  If this is the best example Hoyer can dredge to the surface, his Maryland voters may get an eerie feeling that Hoyer doesn’t intend at all.

TCP has a channel dedicated to videos of town-hall protests here.

Either way, this is the problem with govt: the disconnect b/w politicians and those they represent.

The problem is that Democrats no longer believe that they are in Washington to represent us. They believe that they are there to run our lives for us.

MD Senator Ben Cardin will be holding town halls here:

Monday, August 10th – 7 p.m.
Towson University Center for the Arts
Harold J. Kaplan Concert Hall
Corner of Cross Campus and Osler Drives
Towson, MD 21204

Parking is available across the street from the Center for the Arts on Auburn Drive off Osler Drive on Lot 13.

And here:

Wednesday, August 12th – 1 p.m.
Hagerstown Community College
Kepler Theater
11400 Robinwood Drive
Hagerstown, MD 21742

I was waffling on going, but this morning’s DNC spot confirmed my presence. I’ve never gone to a town hall in my life. I just hope my sponsoring insurance company pays up in time. But…what should I wear?

They’re really getting rattled. I’ve gotten two (2) unsolicited emails from the DNC today pushing the “mob” meme… then asking for contributions (naturally). Here’s the latest;

Dear —–:

There’s been a lot of media coverage about organized mobs intimidating lawmakers, disrupting town halls, and silencing real discussion about the need for real health insurance reform.

The truth is, it’s a sham. These “grassroots protests” are being organized and largely paid for by Washington special interests and insurance companies who are desperate to block reform. They’re trying to use lies and fear to break the President and his agenda for change.

Health insurance reform is about our lives, our jobs, and our families — we can’t let distortions and intimidation get in the way. We need to expose these outrageous tactics, and we’re counting on you to help. Can you read these “5 facts about the anti-reform mobs,” then pass them along to your friends and family?

5 facts about the anti-reform mobs

1. These disruptions are being funded and organized by out-of-district special-interest groups and insurance companies who fear that health insurance reform could help Americans, but hurt their bottom line. A group run by the same folks who made the “Swiftboat” ads against John Kerry is compiling a list of congressional events in August to disrupt. An insurance company coalition has stationed employees in 30 states to track where local lawmakers hold town-hall meetings.

2. People are scared because they are being fed frightening lies. These crowds are being riled up by anti-reform lies being spread by industry front groups that invent smears to tarnish the President’s plan and scare voters. But as the President has repeatedly said, health insurance reform will create more health care choices for the American people, not reduce them. If you like your insurance or your doctor, you can keep them, and there is no “government takeover” in any part of any plan supported by the President or Congress.

3. Their actions are getting more extreme. Texas protesters brought signs displaying a tombstone for Rep. Lloyd Doggett and using the “SS” symbol to compare President Obama’s policies to Nazism. Maryland Rep. Frank Kratovil was hanged in effigy outside his district office. Rep. Tim Bishop of New York had to be escorted to his car by police after an angry few disrupted his town hall meeting — and more examples like this come in every day. And they have gone beyond just trying to derail the President’s health insurance reform plans, they are trying to “break” the President himself and ruin his Presidency.

4. Their goal is to disrupt and shut down legitimate conversation. Protesters have routinely shouted down representatives trying to engage in constructive dialogue with voters, and done everything they can to intimidate and silence regular people who just want more information. One attack group has even published a manual instructing protesters to “stand up and shout” and try to “rattle” lawmakers to prevent them from talking peacefully with their constituents.

5. Republican leadership is irresponsibly cheering on the thuggish crowds. Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner issued a statement applauding and promoting a video of the disruptions and looking forward to “a long, hot August for Democrats in Congress.”
It’s time to expose this charade, before it gets more dangerous. Please send these facts to everyone you know. You can also post them on your website, blog, or Facebook page.

Now, more than ever, we need to stand strong together and defend the truth.

Thanks,

Jen

Trillion Spent (and I’m Feelin’ Swell)
(swung to the tune of Erie Canal)

I come from DC, I gotta plan,
Millions’ spent and feelin’ swell
Free health care provided by the Man
Billions’ spent and feelin’ swell

We’ve hauled some kickbacks in our day
filled with graft and lobby pay
And I don’t care what those bills might say
‘Cause I vote ‘em in, anyway

Chorus:
Health Care!, Everybody’s down
Health Care! we’re coming for your town
Just inform upon your neighbor, inform upon your pal
If they don’t think Obama’s swell

But I have to leave now, ol’ gal,
Trillions’ spent and feelin’ swell

‘Cause you bet your life I’d never part of a plan
‘Trillions spent and feelin’ swell.
Getting health care like a common man
I’m due back in DC by 6 o’clock
To put the country deeper into hock.

I have confirmed from multiple Republican congressional offices that, despite Democrat attempts to portray American citizens as “Nazi-like” and “a mob” for questioning members of Congress on healthcare, the DNC is coordinating activity to target swing district Republican congressmen in their offices.

Multiple Republican offices have received calls from the Democratic National Committee in their district offices asking for the office hours of the office, when the Congressman is expected to be in the office, etc. Staffers in the offices are confident the data will be compiled by the DNC to send activists to Republicans’ offices to push the healthcare agenda.

In other words — while the Democrats are accusing the Republicans are orchestrating protestors at open townhalls, the Democrats are going to push activists straight into congressional offices to cause scenes fit for the local newscasts.

The DNC is going to send its own mobs “concerned citizens” to GOP offices for townhalls.

In SW Ohio, this could be interesting. There are two adjacent districts, the first represented by the freshman Dem Driehaus (who’s been featured in a post here at HA) and the second represented by GOP Jean Schmidt. Driehaus is feeling heat, Schmidt represents a district that has been trending Dem.

I’m hoping this whole affair solidifies things for Schmidt and enables a GOPer to run Driehaus out on a rail. He already voted for Cap-and-trade. Government-takeover-of-healthcare is going to kill him.

Hoyer looked like he was thinking, “Who the hell let the folks from Calvert County in here?”

I live in Kentucky but know a couple of things about Maryland. I know where Calvert County is and to never get into a blue crab eating contest with Marylanders.

It is really beginning to appear that this push to pass the healthcare bill by these intrenched politicians is becoming a pathology of some kind.

They are so oblivious that almost nothing short of a clinical diagnosis makes any sense. Perhaps it should be a non-insurable pre-existing condition.

singlemalt_18 on August 5, 2009 at 2:22 PM

I’m never one to think that there will be trouble among the American people (Obviously, I wasn’t alive during the War of Northern Aggression). However, I think if Congress passes the Health Care bill, there will be trouble. I really feel like they’re going to pass something garbled and mangled piece of legislation that will go through conference committee. It won’t seem so bad at first, but as it is implemented people will be increasingly ticked off. Look for none of it to be implemented until after the 2010 election.

Also, I’ve quit calling the bill “ObamaCare.” To name legislation after someone implies leadership. We have no president at the moment, so I’ve started calling it “PelosiCare.”

Oh, and instead of “new black panther party,” you may want to dress up as a member of the “new albino panther party.”

i just have to cut and paste this comment from bizinsider

Rellag said: Aug 5, 1:01 PMFrench monarchists today condemned the jacobin rabble seen organizing outside the Bastille.

“Clearly the work of British-financed extremists” said one source.

“Some of them aren’t even Sorbonne graduates!” said another.

The press room erupted in collegial laughter when a high ranking palace official was heard to remark about their economic grievances, “Let them eat cake”

Great advice Virginia!

You know how many people died while building the Erie Canal from snake bites or disease. I live near the canal and it makes for a good bike path.

Republicans played a trick on Democrats today by redirecting angry telephone calls coming into their switchboard to the Democratic National Committee, CNN reports.

Earlier this morning, the DNC released a web video accusing the GOP of inciting mob activity.

“At the end of the video, the DNC instructs people to call the Republican National Committee to express outrage. Callers who dial the RNC’s main number to voice their concern about the DNC’s charges are told to press 1, which sends them to the DNC’s main switchboard.”

Kudos to the well-dressed gentleman in the front row, who obviously knows a liar when he sees one.

The Erie Canal?

The best part, imo, was the black woman sitting next to the man who muttered in a ‘wtf” way exactly that.

When Osama hit the tower on 9/11, there was a political cartoon that showed Osama with a stick that had an airplane at the end of it and he was using it to hit a hornets nest that had the US flag on it.

Does anyone else feel the beginnings of that level of pissed off Americans as I do? You know we are real fast to anger but once it starts…OMG…

I.LOVE.IT…KEEP IT UP…I HATE EMPTY SUIT AND HIS MINIONS…

Henry “Pig-nose” Waxman is my congressman. I called up his office just now to ask about scheduled townhalls. He’s having ONE on a FRIDAY at 10AM about 30 miles from my home. These congressman are COWARDS!!!! Here’s my email to him:

Just contacted your office to find out about your scheduled townhall meetings. Surprise! Just one at UCLA during a workday (8/21) at 10am. Wow, you are really a man of the people. Your schedule sure seems busy, hope you are not too put out by rubbing shoulders with your importatnt constituents. Those would be the unemployed leftwing voters on the westside who you seem to want to pander to. Hey, its tough working 3 days a week so you deserve a break. After all, taking money from the working people and redistributing it to your leftwing supporters is hard. Just one question: What are you afraid of?

Andy in Agoura Hills on August 5, 2009 at 4:21 PM

Sorry, I mean we aren’t real fast to anger…

Ltlgeneral64 on August 5, 2009 at 4:22 PM

and he’s a registered Democrat?

so does that give him street cred to have the sign and the shorts???

Almost Certain Leftist BS Alert, claiming that an unspecified “freshman congressman” was “physically assaulted” at some unspecified place by a healthcare protestor:

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/08…-dem-assaulted/

Note that the story, oddly, never names the purported “victim” of said assault. Note, too, that there’s absolutely no news story anywhere online, as of this writing, confirming either the so-called “assault,” nor any arrest for same. (… and surely, publicly assaulting a congresscritter, in broad daylight, would be all sorts of newsworthy…) ;)

Just a quick heads-up, as I expect this is meant to go viral.

Kent18 on August 5, 2009 at 4:26 PM

Reminds me of when I have written a question to my reps, all you get is a bunch of unrelated “garbage”. Ie., a campaign speech of things they have done. And they call us stupid and can’t understand the anger we feel when they refuse to answer their “bosses” questions.

hillbilly on August 5, 2009 at 4:26 PM

“There” not “their.” OY!

Virginia Shanahan on August 5, 2009 at 3:38 PM

Virginia, the Punctuation and Misspelling Police is not really helpful to the message we’e trying to put out there.
We all make mistakes, and only serves to make the person feel stupid and inferior. We already feel powerless and invisible with this administration.

We’re all criticized to death and venting here should be a safe place to do so.

Chill out.

Respectfully,

Laraine

And it’s begun: Democrats claiming Republicans are getting physically violent, without proof or evidence.

Enoxo on August 5, 2009 at 3:19 PM

I made it through 30 posts before I just couldn’t take it anymore. Almost all of these people who belong to the Democrat party were discussing ways to take the First Amendment away from these protesters. Funny how the Democrats can say whatever they want, protest as much as they want, and draw stupid pictures of Bush, but they don’t want independant voters to do the same. Typical Democrats, complete morons.

Steny Hoyer was my Rep for many, many years. When he weighed less than he does now he looked like a ferret. He came to my school once when MASH was popular and he looked like Frank Burns. Old Ferret Face. He looked like a cornered rat then and he still does. He is not trustworthy in his political life or his personal life.

I wrote to him a week or so ago actually telling him he was loosing support in his area because of ObamaCare. I basically said what that older gentleman was saying. I did not ask for an answer because I used my maiden name and address when I lived there. I loved the video and all those rascally Republicans sitting in the front row.
You better believe he is getting another letter tonight about how his support is slipping and how it isn’t good to piss off old people.

This video just made my day. I just can’t wipe that silly smile off my face!
