Congress buys 3 private jets for $200 million
posted at 2:55 pm on August 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Remember when Congress erupted in outrage over the arrival in Washington DC of the CEOs of the three major American automakers in private jets? The bumbling public relations of the Big Three gave elected officials an opportunity to indulge in populist spleen-venting at rich fat cats and their greed. Public pressure pushed the automakers to dump their private fleets of corporate jets and focus belt-tightening in the executive suites as well as on the manufacturing floor.
Who knew that Congress merely wanted to undercut price on their own purchase of private jets?
Last year, lawmakers excoriated the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for traveling to Washington, D.C., by private jet to attend a hearing about a possible bailout of their companies.
But apparently Congress is not philosophically averse to private air travel: At the end of July, the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress.
The Air Force had asked for one Gulfstream 550 jet (price tag: about $65 million) as part of an ongoing upgrade of its passenger air service.
But the House Appropriations Committee, at its own initiative, added to the 2010 Defense appropriations bill another $132 million for two more airplanes and specified that they be assigned to the D.C.-area units that carry Members of Congress, military brass and top government officials.
Normally, that would be considered an earmark. However, since Appropriations merely expanded a line item instead of creating one, it didn’t require the member to identify him/herself. Instead, the jet-setter will remain anonymous — and Congress as a whole can take the blame for passing it.
How about it, America? Does this Congress need three more private jets, or even one? Should they not fly commercial like the rest of us? Considering the massive deficits this administration and the Democrats in Congress now run — much worse than anything remotely imagined at GM, Chrysler, or Ford — should they not hold themselves to the standard they dramatically demanded from the CEOs of the automakers last November?

$200 million to buy three passenger jets for Congress and yet they felt the need to amend a defense appropriations bill to scrap $100 million for the military to get F-22s as a necessary spending cut?

Hey when we spend your money it is good for you. We stimulate the economy. Nobody else had enough money to buy those jets, but we did.
Oh yeah, that whole entire military fleet that you’ve already paid for isn’t good enough. Those planes are usually smelly because of the sweaty soldiers getting a ride to fight for us. You wouldn’t want congress to have to sit in such a smell for our free flights would you?

amerpundit on August 5, 2009 at 3:05 PM
Here is some quick math for you Congressmen. The average cost of a ticket from anywhere to anywhere in the US is about $500 round trip. Now, divide $200,000,000 by $500 and you get the nice round number of $4,000,000. Divide $4,000,000 by 535 since there are 535 members in Congress. This means for the price our budget minded Congressmen paid for those jets each and every member could have bought 7,476 round-trip tickets. Also, this number can only go up since you must add the cost of fuel, crew, maintenance, etc every time you fly the thing. Of course, asking them to ride coach with us peasants is out of the question.

Our representation has become so separated from the will of the represented. They have no sense about the taxpayers’ money, no sense about taxpayers, no sense about freeloaders.
They really cannot conceive that significant majorities want government to be limited. They are dumbfounded by all the constituent push-back on false promise of a big government “Utopia”. They consider themselves elite and entitled and sooo important, like we could not survive if it would take them a few hours longer to get wherever. These people need to get their *sses canned in 2010.
But then we will have another problem – Republicans.

It really is unbelievable. These people don’t have a clue what the value of a dollar is. Trillion is the new Billion to them. EARNING money is a foreign concept to them.
This really makes me angry. They said democracy would fail because people would just vote themselves money until they don’t have any.
The air force requested ONE jet (65 million is an expensive and unnecessary jet) You can get a nice Cessna Citation for 25 million and it is brand new and state of the art.
They came back with funding for 3. They asked how much it was, they said 65 million, then they said, lets buy 3.
This story is really unbelievable. I am really having a hard time that they would do that. We would not be worse off in a monarchy.
