ObamaCare: The grassroots are always greener

posted at 2:23 pm on August 4, 2009 by Karl

Democrats would like to play the victim card in response to the hostile pushback against their proposed government takeover of the US healthcare system. The word has gone out from Sen. Democratic Whip Dick Durbin to a raft of lefty blogs to discredit anti-ObamaCare critics and protesters as vicious mobs ginned up by “lobbyist-run groups” like Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks (Josh Marshall gets bonus points for going all the way with the Nazi allusion). From lefty blogs, the message goes directly to the Politico’s Glenn Thrush, Keith Olbermann and CBS News — though CBS conceded that the “turnouts also reflect the real fear over the increased taxes and government controls that are part of the health bills being considered in Congress.”

The role of established conservative groups may be more of following and facilitating the protesters. But even if such groups are becoming more involved in organizing opposition to ObamaCare, the hypocrisy here is rather staggering, given the amount of astroturf involved in trying to sell ObamaCare to an increasingly resistant public. As Michelle Malkin noted upon the launch of the lefty campaign:

On Thursday, a national “grassroots” coalition called Health Care for America Now (HCAN) will march on Capitol Hill to demand universal healthcare. The ground troops won’t have to march very far. HCAN, you see, is no heartland network. It is headquartered at 1825 K Street in Washington, DC — smack dab in the middle of Beltway lobby land.

In fact, 1825 K Street is Ground Zero for a plethora of “progressive” groups subsidized by anti-war, anti-Republican, Big Nanny special interests. Around Washington, the office complex is known as “The Other K Street.” The Washington Post noted in 2007 that “its most prominent tenants form an abbreviated who’s who of well-funded allies of the Democratic Party….Big money from unions such as the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, as well as the Internet-fueled MoveOn, has provided groups like those at 1825 K Street the wherewithal to mount huge campaigns.”

MoveOn, of course, is the recreational political vehicle of radical liberal sugar daddy George Soros. The magnate’s financial fingerprints are all over the HCAN coalition, which includes MoveOn, the action fund of the Center for American Progress (a Soros think tank), and the Campaign for America’s Future (a pro-welfare state lobbying outfit).

Indeed, HCAN includes all of the aforementioned groups, plus the AFL-CIO, ACORN and more. HCAN is conducting a joint campaign with Organizing for America (OFA), the Democratic National Committee-run vestiges of President Obama’s campaign. The astroturf has been on public display at events like Pres. Obama’s healthcare town hall meeting in Northern Virginia, where all of the live questions came from members of SEIU, HCAN, and OFA. Heading into the August recess, the White House and the Congressional Democratic Leadership are working in close coordination with outside groups, including but not limited to, HCAN, Families USA, AFSCME, SEIU, and AARP.

If there is anyone putting their own interests ahead of those they claim to represent, it is the AARP. If there is anyone who should not be whining about vocal anti-Obamacare protests, it is the muscle for money crowd at SEIU and ACORN. If there is anyone who knows about shouting down their critics, it is OFA. If there is anyone without standing to complain about activists getting in people’s faces, it is Pres. Obama.

The Community Organizer in Chief, advised by master astroturfer David Axelrod, has amassed a campaign that dwarfs the efforts of the Right. But they are currently outnumbered and out-messaged on a shoe-string budget, primarily because of the merits of the issue. And that, more than anything, is what has the Left demonizing dissent from ObamaCare.

Seriously, I think these idiot members of Congress have been hypnotized. Surely, they are not this stupid. All of the polls show that Obama is meeting his waterloo. How dare they accuse the people at townhall meetings of being fringe groups. If anyone is fringe, it is our government.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, am I supposed to punch them out, or pee on them? I await guidance.

But the screaming junk?

AnninCA on August 4, 2009 at 4:35 PM

What did YOU do when you kids weren’t paying attention to you? I’ll bet you raised your voice.

These people are getting upset that their representatives are not listening to them.

In fact, some representatives have actually said that it does not matter what their constituents want, they are voting for the HCB.

Raised voices are called for: the children elected to congress are not listening.

Yoop on August 4, 2009 at 4:41 PM

Seriously, I’m just commenting that the tactic may backfire.

AnninCA on August 4, 2009 at 4:35 PM

Backfire on who? Who’s there to backfire on? There are only two sides … yours, which wants taxpayer funded health care for illegal aliens, and ours, who want the government out of our lives.

So … who is it going to backfire on? Illegals?

darwin on August 4, 2009 at 4:41 PM

There you are, AnninCA,
Remember this posting you made a couple days ago:

How do we pay for this?
Duh*
I’m trying to talk about real issues, and you’re back there acting like we should balance the budget.

Good times, good times…..

Apparently AnninCA thinks that anyone who’s concerned about how we are going to pay for all this largess is an idiot.

As they say, it takes one to know one, right AnninCA?

AnninCA on August 4, 2009 at 4:35 PM

So why does ACORN and all the other Statists Astroturf collectives do it?

Chainsaw56 on August 4, 2009 at 4:46 PM

AnninCA on August 4, 2009 at 2:29 PM

I just figured it out! AnninCA is either Barbara Boxer or Barbara Streisand

Cavuto just had a “democratic strategist” on who spent most of his time to remind all of us that THERE’S A HEALTH CARE CRISES GOING ON!!! and ALL these people protesting are pre-programmend drones of the insurance industry.

YOU, YES YOU, DON’T HAVE A GENUINE CONCERN FOR A RUNAWAY GOVERNMENT THAT SPENDING TRILLIONS. YOU can’t possibly understand that the government can provide health care better and cheaper than the private sector. YOU just need to trust the House and the Senate to give YOU what you need. Oh, and the actual paperwork may not be available until we get back to work in September—-but trust us, everything that we’ve passed so far is in your best interest.

NOW STOP WITH THIS REDICULOUS PROTESTING! WE’RE TRYING TO FIX THIS CRISIS!

Rovin on August 4, 2009 at 4:47 PM

So why does aren’t ACORN and all the other Statists Astroturf collectives do maligned like this?

AnninCA on August 4, 2009 at 4:35 PM

Well, Ann, allow me provide you with some seriously serious information.

The liberals fully expected us to roll over and play dead. They did not expect any serious pushback. They are refusing to acknowledge that the majority of the people do not want what they are preparing to foist upon us.

Now, seriously, they did not expect push back, and they really aren’t expecting the shoveback that is coming next. People are angry. People are fed up. People are ready to fight for their rights. As soon as the taxes are raised on the middle class to cover the extreme FU’s caused by the liberal congress critters all hell is going to break loose.

Is the left ready for that? Americans have shown in the past that they will only be pushed so far, then they react. That “so far” is right there, right now. Is the left ready for that? Seriously?

I’m suspicious that this disruption idea is going to backfire.

I agree that asking Joe the Plumber-type questions is better than shout-downs.

However, I also suspect that it’s going to backfire on Democratic Congress critters to characterize their angry constituents as being miscreants and/or paid stooges of the insurance industry.

evergreen on August 4, 2009 at 5:11 PM

Why are the democrats following what is clearly a dangerous political path with respect to their constituents and re-election? Think “The Untouchables” and the Chicago way, particularly Robert DeNiro and Al Capone’s speech on TEAMWORK and individual initiative. All it takes is one example and a lot of intel. People do apparently irrational things when they are faced with perfectly rational choices (like self-preservation) … with an offer that they can not refuse.

Canada: Tonight at 8:15pm I finally get my MRI, for which I have waited 5 months. Now, I likely don’t have anything that is going to kill me soon, but you can be sure there are others who have died while waiting for their turn in the MRI diagnostics unit. It’s obvious, some die waiting for diagnosis.

How can this be?

When healthcare is provided by bureaucrats, their first incentive is to ensure the health of their bureaucracy. This usually manifests itself in increased costs and bloating, rather than efficiency. On the other hand, a free market system must compete based on the service it provides. Therefore, money is dedicated towards the capital equipment needed to excel and compete. In a bureaucracy, money is dedicated to the bureaucracy first, and towards capital equipment with what is left.

A single payer system, which leads to a single provider system, because that is required by the bureaucracy as it manages the money towards its own end, will provide antibiotics to the homeless, sure, and single moms won’t lose their car because their child broke their arm.

But people in the still-productive years, when beset by medical issues that are treatable, but expensive, or require access to expensive equipment and/or expertise, will face having longer wait times as critical equipment and expertise becomes scarce. More will die, unnecessarily, as a result.

It is hard to argue otherwise, when to the immediate north of the US is a country that demonstrates these simple principles vividly.

Some will have better care, some who should not otherwise die are going to die. That’s the bottom line.

The real winners will be the health bureaucrats, who will stash away their fully indexed pensions and prance daily through visions of their growing fiefdoms and luscious little swatch of power.

AARP speaks with forked tongue. Increasing numbers of the elderly have figured this out.

jeanie on August 4, 2009 at 6:03 PM

A thought occurred to me to-day about SEIU support of Obamacare. One of the recruiting tools that unions always use is that they can compel employers to provide medical benefits(insurance) to union members. If Obamacare goes throught with the public option, this will kill the private insurance companies. This will leave the unions with one less recruiting tool,so workers will be less likely to join.
Looks like the unions are shooting themselves in the foot.
It is a minor point,I know, especially when they are also pushing for card-check which will make recruiting unneccesary.Just a thought.

If the Leftist Statists think the American public is going to roll over and just do nothing, then they are sorely mistaken.

Remember, since liberals don’t believe in the Second Amendment as written, that its the conservatives who are well armed and most of us have frequent shipments of ammo coming in on a weekly basis.

Lastly, if they like government healthcare so damned much, why the hell aren’t they moving in droves to Canada which offers it?
